Brad has openly talked about his issues with depression, and how he was hospitalized in a psychiatric unit once. I thought it was refreshing, that he was open about his issues, without being embarrassed by them. It's a shame that people are still afraid to talk about mental heath problems, because it discourages people from seeking help, in times of crisis.
I think the sexist angle comes in when you think about the implication that the movie has that men are incapable of handling taking care of children. Which does get on my nerves when I see someone talk about how their husband is babysitting the kids. No, he is their father. What he is doing is called being a parent.
Castiel Winchester I disagree, when I was watching my young children I was babysitting. Watching your kids isnt parenting ( and is at the same time ) Your parenting while at work, your parenting in your sleep, parenting isn’t an action its an entire state of being. It truly alters your perspective and every aspect of your life. So again I repectfully disagree Cheers
It's not the first movie he's starred in where there's a fucked up approach to mental health issues- he's also in 50 First Dates, where it's fine for a amnesiac woman to be in a sexual relationship , even though her memory problems make it impossible for her to give consent. It's sad, because Sean Astin's mom (the actress Patty Duke) had manic depression, and she spent a lot of her later life trying to bring public awareness to mental illnesses and the need to properly diagnose AND treat them, you know, with medication, not Jesus. You'd think he'd be more thoughtful about the movies he stars in, even if he is desperate for a paycheck. (Sorry for the essay, just needed to get that off my chest). Tl DR ; Sean Astin's mom was manic depressive and a public advocate for mental health and she'd be horrified by this movie, and her son's choice to be in it.
Fun Fact: Patricia Heaton is a TV pundit/member of the Parents Television Council....Not hard to see why her uptight ass is in this.(especially with the sitcom jokes/hijinks Bull$#!t) This movie needs to be Snobbed!!!
Sometimes you laugh at something because you empathize with it and presenting it in a humorous manner helps you deal with the stuff in your own life. Laughingr at someone is not always an act of cruelty.
Daniel Latta. I actually think this is true, cause I tend to smile or giggle when I see something bad, like a defense mechanism. But I don't think what I'm seeing is funny, it's like I'm trying to calm myself down. I could also be going insane, who knows! haha.
Oh. This was a religious movie? I hadn't known that. I now know to avoid. As someone close to a schizophrenic aunt, with depression that runs in my family, I think making light of mental health would make me insanely angry.
Also, you'd think the high profile national tragedies committed by people suffering mental health issues, you'd think this *christian* movie would've been more sensitive to the subject matter.
If I want to see bad things happen to animals I'll watch an Amazon Cannibal movie. Especially the one with the most animal brutality... Cannibal Holocaust 2
This movie absolutely was sexist. It's about what the films message conveys not what the women themselves do in their jobs. The film is saying it's ok that you are overworked and have to be the stay at home mom because that job is important. It's actually deeply patronizing towards women. This film is aimed at Christian moms you ignored that context completely. The film is absolutely sexist and the female reviewer here completely missed the point.
Yep. The only mom who works is perceived as 'having' to work because she's unmarried--and she leaves her kid with an irresponsible babysitter and is painted as a bad mom. Patricia Heaton's character is identified totally by her husband's status (I'm the Pastor's WIFE), and it's never even suggested that the miserable lead character might benefit from a part-time job that would get her out of the house.
All I want to know is, are people really like this? With there kids? Just constantly worried about them 24-7, scared that they might trip or fall if no one is watching them, or that they might see a PG movie before they are ready for it? I honestly don't get it. I grew up in the country, dirt broke and my parents usually didn't care what I was doing as long as I wasn't doing anything that I could get arrested for or hospitalized. And I'm mostly the same way. As long you have a cell phone and are with someone else if your swimming, go for it. Maybe I should stop letting 7 year old girls play Postal 2 and GTA V.
Dave. Angry and cynical and almost always stressed. Also strongly atheist, but make of that what you will. Hates musicals. Hates Willy Wonka. Never read kids books as a kid. Instead watched things like Blazing Saddles as a kid. Most-favorite movies are slasher, heist, and drug movies. Spent much of his adulthood doing drugs and drinking. Still drinks a lot. Dude, you are just TOO adult. I'm having a hard time sympathizing with you in a lot of areas.
if the movie was made ten years ago for TV, I'm not sure pure flix would use a Jewish actress. I love Debra Messing so I hope it's not a slam on her, not to assume it is. I thought it was an okay movie, minus the Jesus stuff.
i never saw it but i still dont get the hatred for it, from what ive seen of trailers it just looks like a harmless crappy family movie. makes me curious....
+FiZzLE 030 Then you've seen the right movies. My cinematic experience has taught me to never trust trailers. Which seems to be the case here (I have not seen it either).
FiZzLE 030 Well, I guess we'll each have to see it to judge for ourselves. In general, though, some of the disapproval these Christian movies garner is from their messages, whether the message itself is terrible (much of War Room's negative rep comes from its message of "sit in a closet and let God do everything, literally"), or the message is terribly presented (God's Not Dead probably could have worked better had they not resorted to such terrible stereotypes and uninformed, presumptuous writing). From what I can gather, one of the messages of Mom's Night Out seems to be "anxiety and depression can be cured with just a night on the town!", which is extremely offensive to those who suffer from such disorders. I'll watch the movie myself before I say any more than that, but those are my thoughts thus far.
Oh come on, you sounded kind of biased because you read too much into it. Everyone in almost every comedy film is just dumb and stupid and does irrational things. I was expecting this review to at least cover more about what happens in the movie and not spend the whole talking about mental health. I've watched Mom's Night Out, there are some funny moments in it. Oh and cops don't send volunteers home when looking for a missing child, they often call on volunteers when children go missing.
This movie has one of the worst outlooks on mental health that I've ever seen in a movie. I've known plenty of people who go through the horrific symptoms of the lead character in this film, and to say it could be cured with a good ole night on the town and a talk with a country star is not amusing or insightful, it's incredibly disheartening. If that makes me bias, then so be it. I'd rather know that this movie is incredibly hurtful and dangerous than laugh at someone who has stress crippling and severe postpartum depression just waitin to be cured with PG hijinks with the girls. Not saying you can't make comedy about of a severe illness, but this movie isn't it, and it's message can go straight back up into its ass.
Stoned Gremlin Productions , I still think you are reading too much into it. That is just my own opinion. It's fine if you felt that way I'm not trying to stick up for the movie, I just think it had some genuine funny moments and I didn't feel like your review touched on hardly any positives in the movie which made it sound kind of biased. I know that your main draw from the movie was negative so I wasn't expecting you to praise it; you felt uncomfortable when watching it. I thought the movie was just kind of dumb like any other comedy where everyone seems to be running around like a chicken with their head cut off, but I still found some genuine moments to be funny. Like the line in the tattoo parlor where the receptionist tells them to take their little house wives of Ohio and get out. Just my opinion. :)
Pretty much. This stops being "just a silly comedy" when you're treated like you're making shit up every day, because you have anxiety, and are constantly told to get over yourself, you just need to chill and have some fun and it'll disappear!
Some jokes works for some people. it is understandable that you guys don't like it and want to rant about this show. For example my dad ranted for hours how "terrible" Deadpool was and how "stupid" Lego Movie had been. And I don't dare to show his Sausage Party.
Alyssa K. People kill themselves because of the shit this woman goes through in this movie and it encourages the audience to repress and ignore those feelings to feel better the message is disgusting
I know I shouldn't care but its reassuring to know Brad seems to have a decent attitude in regard to mental health.
I like to know that, too. :)
came here to say this! i am wholly impressed.
He is a very intelligent and decent person.
Then why was he ever friends with Jake?
Brad has openly talked about his issues with depression, and how he was hospitalized in a psychiatric unit once. I thought it was refreshing, that he was open about his issues, without being embarrassed by them. It's a shame that people are still afraid to talk about mental heath problems, because it discourages people from seeking help, in times of crisis.
This needs to be a Snob episode. Seriously Brad, after Old Fashioned and The Identical. This sounds ripe for a really fantastic episode

Best thing about this movie is that it got them to make an It's Always Sunny reference.
I think the sexist angle comes in when you think about the implication that the movie has that men are incapable of handling taking care of children. I feel like Dave needs a hug
SteveOM Only if that's the name of an alcoholic beverage🤣
When marijuana gets legalized there’s going to be so many anti weed Christian films
How can Sean Astin go from The Goonies and Lord of the Rings to Christian movies!?
It's not the first movie he's starred in where there's a fucked up approach to mental health issues- he's also in 50 First Dates, where it's fine for a amnesiac woman to be in a sexual relationship , even though her memory problems make it impossible for her to give consent. Well, at least he's a ninja turtle, now
Oh, wow! I didn't know all that about Patty Duke. Thanks for the info. Yeah, it's sad to see what's Sean come to these days.
he was also rudy
He totally redeemed himself, by starring in Stranger Things season 2.... So leave Sean Aston ALONE!!!!!
What happened to the mom from Raymond? Just... what happened?
It's nice to see somebody go after religious films.
Have you heard of God Awful Movies? It's a podcast, and it's fantastic (though the comedy tends to get crude from time to time).
Cinema Snob vapes? I guess wondering that aloud would be like musing, "Nostalgia Chick is a feminist?"
+Riff Chick I've been out of the loop with these guys for awhile but I think he started using e cigs to quit smoking.
I've seen nearly every episode of Everybody Loves Raymond and that is most definitely an episode
I do believe it was several episodes...
+HypeHater 693 i'm pretty sure you're right
Why hasn’t this been made into a Snob episode?
We're sorry, your reservation is for next Saturday.
Oh, okay, see you next Saturday!

This movie needs to be Snobbed!!!
The movie is utterly a Christian family friendly knock-off of “Bad Moms” with a dash of “Gone Baby Gone”.
Sometimes you laugh at something because you empathize with it and presenting it in a humorous manner helps you deal with the stuff in your own life. Laughingr at someone is not always an act of cruelty.
I wish I could still thumbs up comments

That episode of South Park dealing with anxiety I got super pissed and I don't hate south Park i still watch it but just not that episode
I bet it was filmed/set in Georgia
IMDB lists the filming location as Birmingham, AL so...not the West Coast
I know I'm late to this party, but the film was shot in Birmingham Alabama if that helps at all.
Really?
***** Yeah, I live in the B'ham area, and some of the local news outlets reported on it.
+Pop Culture Primer (Pop Culture Primer) yet another reason to dislike my home state

Babak And of course the dads don't know shit about kids. This movie insults everybody.
I would rather the guys were allowed to express their true outrage without being like essentially shushed by Sarah or whoever and told it was k.
Any review that references MST3k's Mitchell is worth the crappy movie. I don't even think my mom would like this movie.
Joe Don Baker _is_ MITTENS!
All I want to know is, are people really like this? With there kids? Just constantly worried about them 24-7, scared that they might trip or fall if no one is watching them, or that they might see a PG movie before they are ready for it?

The guy who looks like Seth Rogan brings up Freaks and Geeks, coincidence?
I Know I would rather watch Mitchell than this movie.
We've seen how these movies have just broken Dave over the years.
Family, faith, and DICK
I'm feeling very triggered. Like honestly, I just came out to have a good time but, I'm feeling so attacked right now.

who the fuck read kids books as a kid when you could watch aliens , terminator or RoboCop
Exactly Right!!!!
