This IS how grammar is taught. There is no viable substitute and children who don't get this don't learn grammar. Our public schools are not teaching reading beyond an 8th grade level. I'm teaching my children Arabic, and I have adopted this method. Now they can identify each part of speech and see how it works in a sentence.

Hi, how can you diagram a sentence when a prepositional phrase acts as a noun. E.g. “After dinner” is a good time.

Put 'After dinner' on a noun stand and diagram 'is' as a linking verb and 'time' on the baseline slanting back, and good under the 'time.

This is all clear enough, but I always get lost when direct objects are involved. For example:
The farmer planted the seeds in the fields.
Does "in the fields" modify "planted" or "seeds"? How do you know?

This shows how prepositional phrases can float in a sentence. You could say "I, with Katie and Liz, go. Just slide the prepositional phrase from the predicate to the subject.
