Today marks 14 years since I lost my mom. Grief is an interesting mistress and I wanted you all to be part of this journey with me. I thought it would be poetic to do a reaction to Mama by Floor Jansen from Beste Zangers Seizoen 12. To say it struck a chord would be an understatement.
If you for sure want me to react to your song/video of choice, become a Patreon to support my mental health outreach, choose future songs for my reactions, participate in monthly live streams, ask me questions and so much more. EVERY SINGLE DIME GOES TOWARD MY MENTAL HEALTH OUTREACH !!!!!

These are the lyrics of a song Floor sung (wich she wrote) in her first band after forever about being bullied: Just wanted to share that with you:
      "Eccentric" ( Writer: Floor Jansen)
What do they see when they look at me?
Who are they to judge me
If they never spoke with me
      Never looked without laughing
Never tried to see, see me
I can't believe that it is only me
      The person to hate
      The only left out
I can't believe how they can be so mean
If they could feel the brutal stings of their words
And the bitter cold when they laugh
      Once more I'm running
      Running away, I must hide
      Can't take anymore
A fight to free me from an endless struggle with life
Running, tell me how far should I go
      If they're all the same
      This fight
      I'm fighting my way through
I don't really want to be like them
      The way they behave
      The way that they live
      I don't really need someone
      No people like that
Someone in a world with wars and respite
      A world without the feeling
      I must be running
      Running away, I must hide
      Can't take anymore
A fight to free me from an endless struggle with life
Running, tell me how far should I go
      If they're all the same
      This fight
      I'm fighting my way through

But every time I talk to you
      You're too afraid to see

      Open your eyes
      (Breathe in, breathe out)
Oh I, I can see the light
      Stay with me
Away from the darkest of nights

      Stay with me
      (Stay with me)
      Stay with me
      (Stay with me)
I don't know if you are ready
You should see where I have been
I don't know if you are ready
I don't know where to begin
      Open your eyes
      (Breathe in life)
      Open your eyes
      (Breathe in, breathe out)
      Open your eyes

Every singer should be. In fact, one of the things that vocal teachers keep saying is: sing phrases, not notes. Singing notes is easy. Realizing what you are singing and carrying the message over to the audience is the harder part. You can sing technically perfect, but without the right expression, the music will always be bland.

Emma only covered Floor's song, but at the very least she was able to finish singing it.
Floor usually cannot finish the song without crying; she managed it once for the first time either last year (or late 2019) but JUST BARELY. She was still crying afterward (and I totally don't blame her, knowing the story behind the song).

@@NativeNewMexican I don't know... Personally, I think Emma and Henk's duet cover of 'Vivo Per Lei' beats Emma's cover of 'Strong'. THAT performance (VPL) was second only to Floor and Henk's duet cover of 'Phantom Of The Opera'. Just my own opinion though. :)

    • @NativeNewMexican
      @NativeNewMexican 3 года назад

@@jamescurfman3284 I'd put Strong over Phantom... Floor's performance was amazing, but Henk's was horrible. I appreciate his choice to "step outside his wheelhouse" and try to do distortion, it was loving and a good shot, but it was as if you asked Jodie Foster to do stand up comedy with 3 weeks of practice. No matter how awesome they are in their "lane" they have to take the time and effort to become good at something that different. Sure, Foster could become an amazing stand up comedian, but not in that timeframe. Henk is an amazing vocalist, but he's nowhere close to a good distorted singer.

    • @jamescurfman3284
      @jamescurfman3284 3 года назад +3

@@NativeNewMexican That is a valid point you try to make but I must disagree with your term. HORRIBLE? REALLY? With that attitude, you must be giving yourself away as one of those Classical Elitist snobs!
I will present a counterpoint; for such short notice, I think he did AMAZING!
Think about it VERY CAREFULLY. Henk's ENTIRE vocalist career (which spans more than forty years) had been spent having to adhere to very strict rules which include avoiding any sort of distortion (otherwise you may as well pack your bags and start looking for a real job). I think that you are part of that system or you would not call his vocals horrible. HOW ELSE can YOU SPECIFICALLY be SO salty over it?
Suddenly Henk FINALLY found himself in a place of independence where thinking outside the box is acceptable and even encouraged. He did a huge favor for somebody who he very quickly came to respect a great deal (and who just so happens to have had a crush on him since she was twelve years old when she saw one of his stage performances as the Phantom).
It's a tiny vocal flex that he is CLEARLY NOT used to doing, having only done it in one other performance before (on the same show). But look at what happened! Those videos both broke the internet! And they did so PRECISELY BECAUSE distortion is not in his usual wheelhouse! He is considered one of the living greats as a baritone in Opera and stage plays.
First, you are NOT Henk. You were NOT there, in his ear, telling him NOT to do that. EVEN IF you had been there and called him naughty or horrible, he would be the first person to laugh at you. You know his sense of humor, right? And his stance about 'Good music is good music.'
Second, you are clearly outvoted. Look at the difference in the likes/upvotes for that Phantom performance and look at the dislikes/downvotes. WAY unbalanced, which means that people LOVED that performance!

I was so heartbroken by it. It took 16 years to get back to the graveyard to take a visit to the grave of my dad. Before i could not handle it.
What send me to his grave was my newborn son. While my wife was ar home i took the baby to the grave to introduce it to his grandpa. And my dad.
Something and i dont know what triggerd me to do that. I found peace on that moment knowing grandpa met his grandchild. The hurting dissapeard and the peace came over me. The missing part is still there. Things you could have shared or questions you may have, remains unanwserd . I still have things a want to ask. But it changed to how would my dad solve it. I buried my beloved mother at 2002. She was decendant of the people of Russian Carelia (near the Finnish border). So she was an orthodox christian and we all were Lutherans. The a little mystical orthodox funeral of my mom is the most beautiful and moving thing that i've ever wittnessed. A tear jerker!
Nightwish has a song "Our Decades in the Sun". They had difficulties recording it, because it made them cry. Nightwish has never performed the song live. The comments on the lyric video tell how much the song means to many people, especially to those who have lost their parents.
Floor has performed the song 'solo', but to me there is no very good video available, an ok one though.
"Meadows of Heaven" is a beautiful one as well, with Anette, the 2nd female vocalist of Nightwish. Many comments saying they want the song to be played on their funeral.
There is fan made video with beatiful landscapes.
But, as you said, something happier next: Nightwish "I Want My Tears Back" Buenos Aires or
"Alpenglow" Wembley Arena. (You have not seen any song from the Buenos Aires concert.

I know this because I have also lost my mother, struggled years with this. A young woman of 51 died in her sleep, no goodbye, no last words and last warm cuddle.
Realising that I am part of my mother, remembering her wisdom, faults and humor. Her way of living her life, gave me the convidence to take on life as is. Knowing that I could learn from her faults, pass on the wisdom and possitive teachings.
That Amanda is what I can give you, as a sort of shoulder to cry on.

Amanda... the best thing that I can say to you is what I began to tell myself for many days after I lost my Dad to Dementia 5 years ago... and what I still say to myself even now. He spent his entire life working, laying the foundation, and making sure that the very best of him was impressed and woven into the fabric of who I am. In those ways... I am him... and he will live on through me. Their life lessons and the impressions that they make on us... all of that love and kindness is energy that is transferred from them to us... and it never goes away. It is absolutely how they live on... and how they still protect us and look out for us. I know that my Dad is still a light on my path in life. He made sure of it. Your Mom is a precious part of the very best of you... the strength and the goodness and the voice of assurance that will always be the light on your path.

This is one of the reasons why we love Floor so dearly: She can express and sing directly into our minds, souls and memories - she is unique - and as you said - she carries us safely through the emotional overload, she starts in our minds.
    You felt it at once.
    **
And I have to tell you - with a big smile, but intense eyes: You are strong enough to trust AND learn from yourself. You cannot rely on anyone else - you are the most important person in your life - and your life affects your son. Don't ever by afraid of making mistakes - that's the only way to evolve!! At it is crucial that you can laugh of yourself and you mistakes - crucial!
Live now, and learn now, seek info, let your feelings free - and train you brain to think and be positive in everthing.
Greetings from Nightwish Army Denmark - and old guy (62) who loves every day including rain, storm, snow etc. The important things in life - that is your own responsibility..

A bit of a context to this show performance(s). Beste Zangers (“Best Singers”) is a Dutch show where singers come together and perform for each other. Each night one of the singers is the non-performing featured person on the center couch and the others perform songs for them that are near and dear to them. Sometimes they are originals of that featured person and sometimes they are non-originals that are just near and dear to them. “Mama” is a original song by Samantha Steenwijk (the blonde on the middle couch).
What’s great about this show is the talent of all the artists and their unique spin they put on other people’s music. For example Floor tends to mix in a bit of metal with the heavy guitar (big shoutout to the house band that does the arranging of the songs).
As a side note I definitely feel like you are a metal head and just don’t know it yet. The metal genre is often characterized as lyrically melancholy. Which is what draws Floor to it so much. Mix that with her off stage empathy and on stage presence, talent, and dedication... and well then end result is some amazing emotion and storytelling.

I cried with you on this one😭
I lost my mom 7 years ago on my dad's birthday. After a 20 year struggle against all kinds of illness she was always strong and caring for me and my sisters.
She tried to never show her weakness to us, but i always knew when she needed support. I tried to help her as much as i could, even wanted to donate my kidney to her untill she got cancer for the 2nd time and the doctors cancelled the whole thing.
That was the trigger for me to fall in a deep depression, i had a burnout, had no energy left anymore to even do the simplest things. Got lost in my own mind and couldn't escape it. I was lucky that she was there for me during that period and i got through it.
But when she passed i had to stay strong for my sisters and felt i couldn't even grieve until i felt they were ok.
Also what didn't help that my father in law passed on my mom's first birthday just a few months later and still i couldn't grieve until i knew my girlfriend was ok.
You can take comfort in the beautiful relationship you had with your mom ad all the great memories she gave you.
I always say that the loss and the grief over time doesn't get less, but you learn to deal with it a bit better. Doesn't take away that at times it still hurts like it was yesterday.
I hope you stay strong and at least you have my support.

Hang in there! Most everyone who has lost a loved one feels with you. I lost my father almost 30 years ago. I had to leave him a couple of days before he died, since I had a job literally half a world away and had to return there. Because of that I was also unable to attend his funeral. It kills me to this day! I was young then; I felt so lost then without his advice. I have missed him since just like you miss your mom. But I have also learnt over the years that our lost ones never truly leave as long as we remember them! 🖤 from Germany

    • @MentalAmanda
      @MentalAmanda  3 года назад +4

I willingly chose not to attend her funeral. She didn't want one anyway and her family (who had turned on her in her last years) held it against her will. Besides, I had my time with her and I didn't want my last memory of her to be in a coffin. I paid my respects in my own way. If they're out there somewhere, we don't need to go somewhere to honor them. They feel it regardless. 💖

Floor absolutely crushed the "Beste Zangers" show. Before this she was relatively unknown in the Netherlands, afterwards she was a star.
She also sang songs in German, Spanish and a number in English. The premise of the show is that a group of singer's from different genres get together. Each week one of them will be the ' featured' guest and all of the others will pick a song that has something to do with them to cover.
Don't miss any of these, Floor absolutely killed everything she did.
But, can I also vote for "I want my tears back" in Buenos Aires 2019. I would love to see you smiling for once, and that song will do it. 💝

lost my dad a few years ago. didn't get to say goodbye, he lived far away. moments i wish i could speak to him. ask him for help. i know i disappointed him. all any of us can do is to live on the way our parents tried to teach us. take what they gave us and build our own lives. sometimes we end up in different places than they might have envisioned for us. but that's how life works. things don't always go how we want. can you keep going when it knocks you down, because it will. scrapes and bumps and heartache and failure. cry or rage, if you need to, but, keep going.

Great song choice Amanda. I am so sorry you lost your mother at such a young age. I can see how much she meant to you. Just remember she is watching over you and is very proud of how far you have come. I can see how this channel is helping you and others with the healing of mental health. I myself struggle every day with depression and anxiety that I know was not caused by a traumatic event in my life. I was just born with it and it never affected me until I was in my late 30's. Now it is a daily battle. The crazy thing is when I started watching talented people sing On RUclips I realized it took my mind so far away that I didn't feel depressed and my anxiety became very manageable. Once I discovered Nightwish with Floor, Dimash, and many other great vocalists or bands I had found a temporary cure. Now I love watching people react to my favorite artists every morning and evening before bed instead of self-medicating. Music can truly heal. I just hope when you think about your mother that you think about all the great times you shared and all that she has taught you. It seems to me that she has done a fantastic job with you. Keep doing what you do Amanda.
Floor has a beautiful song that she wrote for her mother called Strong. I believe that song will hit you hard but in a good way. Make sure you have some tissue ready. Her song Strong was also covered for her on Beste Zanger's season 12 by Emma Hesters who does an absolutely amazing version. Warning- Floor cries every time she sings that song and also cried during Emma's version.

I also had a genetic predisposition to depression and anxiety. Situations just made it worse. The way I think of it is that genetics loads the gun but we pull the trigger. and never back to A or B again. At any given moment, we go back to A and start again. Or
go to Z and rest awhile.
You have a strength that amazes. Your willingness to “lean into” the pain is beyond inspirational.
Allowing yourself to feel the emotions in front of an audience is a courage most only aspire to.

A few days later she got major surgery (bypass) but the doctors told us that she problably wouldt live very long because of the state she was in. She is still alive today, but still: every day can be her last day. 2 weeks ago she fell in the bathroom, was again rushed into hospital. But again she survived. Talking about a strong woman :) Since that newyearsday in 2002 every time I visit her I hope she is still alive and not laying dead on the bed/couch/floor. So many times I said goodbye in my prayers. I'm really sorry for your loss Amanda. It's really good you're sharing your emotions with us. I lost my dad when I was younger too. I was 25 and you were 15 (correct?) when you lost your mom. Both ages are dangerous when you lose your guidance. Stay strong, keep faith!

Don't feel like you've failed! Look at you now, I've only watched three of your videos so far and it looks like you're holding up a light to help others find their way... You're a beacon in the dark and that takes so much strength, it's extremely admirable. Even if songs like this bring pain, know that there are people here that feel it with you and it's not wasted because pain can help us find perspective as long as we try to understand why we're feeling it.
Bless you, what ray of light you are.

So sorry for your loss. Your pain was plain to see. Be as strong as you can be and ensure that any perceived regrets you may have are remedied with the interactions with your own offspring. Stay safe 🤘✌

I do love how you show your emotions. I lost my girls few years ago and still don't know why I am not allowed to see them. I still live with that pain and it hurts me to see people like you suffer from your losses.
I hope you have strength to cope with your loss. I sometimes don't. Stay strong. Don't be alone

    Very touching!
About 12 years ago I almost lost mother to a heart attack. I was attending the Royal Institute of Technology (in Stockholm, Sweden) at the time and living at home to save money (no student loans, yay ).
One morning just as I was about to leave for class, mom was walking up the stairs and I could tell something was wrong. I offered to drive her to the nearest clinic and she agreed (do she also must have known something was wrong). I drive back home and went to class. Thanks to some attentive nurses in the waiting room she is still alive, they saw her lips turn blue and called for an ambulance and administered nitroglycerin. She had surgery and recovered, and has had several preventative procedures since then.
She has easy outlived her estimated life span, but ever time I'm close to my parents place and see an ambulance, I fear that mom is in it.
I might have saved her life that day, but the last few years I have caused nothing but problems due to my depression and alcoholism.
Thanks for sharing your story and showing that there is hope.

It's so good you were there and I'm so happy your mom is still fighting! You have your own battles too it seems. Here if YOU need someone.

@@MentalAmanda Yes, I sure am fighting through some battles myself. I sure could need someone.
I don't think I have ever written down my journeys, and not in English so it will probably take some time to share my story. It is also quite scary to ponder having all my shortcomings and failures collected in one place.
