I left Panasonic years ago when I upgraded my GH4 to a Blackmagic BMPCC4K. I think the G9II is reason enough to come back. Internal raw recording is great, but I miss my flippy screen and long battery life. I won't know myself with IBIS & AF.
I find silent shutter burst mode at 20fps and pre-burst mode, as you call it here, on the OM-1 is more than enough for most situations. I've yet to need 50fps. That's where I'm not sure the C-AF can keep up. I've really been needing to test this. I do think the photography capabilities of the G9 ii are interesting. Though why they didn't include a few more computational modes I'm not sure. Perhaps they'll come later? I know I find myself using the live ND feature on the OM-1 far more than I thought I would. I rarely even pull out my ND filter. Thanks for outlining the photography side of things on the G9 ii. I think because it has so much video potential, people tend to gloss over this. Even if it's the "photography-centric" camera, video is always in the spotlight. It's just what is most popular. So your attention to detail is appreciated. Keep up the great work. It's nice to have found you by happenstance in the flood of G9 ii videos coming out. RUclips recommended something helpful? How did that happen? lol
G9 II for the win. Have been waiting (im)patiently for this camera, and am glad that the wait has been worth it. All cameras have compromises, but it seems for me that the G9 II compromises in all the right places. The feature set is comprehensive, at a competitive price, and it's compatible with my existing glass.
I’m going to echo what a number of other people have already said. One of the key strengths of M43 is the smaller size & weight. The G9 isn’t small, but there is the GX9 with the same sensor and image quality that is. When (if?) they come out with a smaller form factor camera with the same features, then M43 will have something other formats can’t match. I own and use both the G9 and the GX9. As a landscape photographer, my subjects don’t move fast enough to make PDAF a big selling point. When size and weight aren’t an issue, I’ll use the G9 every day of the week. If I have to climb a mountain to get the shot, it’s the GX9. The thing I’ve noticed about photographers is that they see the world as one circumstance - I need a camera for this… The truth is we buy into a system for how it handles all of our circumstances. Panasonic now has two cameras with the new sensor. Time to make a smaller one. And as long as I’m putting together my list of demands, how ‘bout a winter camera? Something designed for use with gloves on. I know it’s a specialty camera that would only appeal to some, but there is a clear need and nobody makes one.
Dangittt. I already sold off my Fuji kit to migrate to Sony for work and Oly for edc. Looks like m43 might be my whole kit if this camera is anything to go by! Great vid!
If they manage to put all this new tech in a smaller body, it might be the fist time I would really consider upgrading my trusty GX85 that has gone with me everywhere. The M43 market has too many perks and fans to just leave it in the dust.
What I really want to see is a head to head low light pixel peeping test against the G9 😉 Curious if the Dynamic Range is any better/worse with new sensor.
BIG bada boom. So happy Panasonic is keeping MFT alive and well. Excellent review as always, thanks. Agreed on the form factor. Timeline fits nicely with my budget and needs ca. 2025. Would prefer a G80/G90 style, maybe they'll give us both. And won't forget mic jacks please.
Lots of comments here of wishing for a GX9 ii (or maybe actually a GX8 ii) but I would prefer some of the features like phase AF put into a more mid-sized body like a G90/G95. The GX9 (I have one!) has essentially no grip even if you get the screw on grip and the controls are quite small for me.) Thanks for the review of an excellent camera!
how would you compare now in 2024 the G9 ll with the GH5S? I am asking because I found a GH5S for about 1100 euro locally in my city, while the G9 ll of course is about 1000 euro more... Is it still more valuable to get the GH5 S and a good rig set up and tripod for that extra 1000 euro than to accept the future of Phasedetect and greater continuous autofocus is here and one should then clearly choose the G9 ll in 2024 if one wants to make money on one's videos? I want to both do short documentaries as well as start doing short plays, short one-person acting films, like 10-15 min monologues at home or in certain outside environments with natural light, like finding interesting plays, creating a character and setting up a scene with stage blocking so I can walk from one object to another in front of the camera and talk on some kind of wireless mic and record it on the camera to have less gear to worry about and so focus more on the directing of myself and the acting... But will the Gh5S be great enough and still a better value for me when I am not yet making money off my equipment? Not saying I should not start making money off my skills, I want to.. Just trying to understand if is better to be using a five-year-old camera or getting on the horse of these new cameras now... Some people say, save the money for the GH7... I am not really sure where to put my money as I have not used these cameras, I got an old GH3 and three very good lenses from 2013... And I feel is time to make an upgrade and start doing more professional work... Sorry, for the long rant and really appreciate it if you could get back when possible! thanks, Chris
As usual, I really appreciate the joyful spirit you bring to all of your content and reviews in particular. You are clearly having fun and it’s infectious. I 100% agree with you on the greedy greeds for a smaller Panasonic body w/phase detect. Maybe OM System will surprise us with a Pen EP-8!
Olympus has been including phase detection in its autofocus system for some time now (I don't know from which model)... I guess it won't be as the most experienced AF from Sony.... but how is it compared to the one from the Olympus?
You can! It has stop motion feature that shows the overlay of the previous image as you work - it's on most lumix cameras, I find it super handy when I dabble 😊
A great video as always! In regards to overheating, consider keeping the display folded out to allow more airflow to the back of the body and at least a few minutes will possibly be gained.
I have just found the M43 system, using mostly medium format and APS-C Fuji for work and your channel has helped a lot. Im using a gm1 for a everyday camera because of its smallness and i would sell a kidney for some of the G9II specs in a smaller format like the gx9 m2 if they ever release one.
This is so much more than I had expected. They put everything into the camera and left nothing out. They could cripple the G9-II a bit to leave more features exclusive to the GH6 but I think PDAF and the new stabilization is so good, that this wouldn't change a lot. So going all in with the G9-II was the right way and I have the feeling there are more features in the pipeline that will go into a GH6-II or GH7 to make this again standing out in video production.
I've tested it so far with my older 12-35mm mki, the oly 45mm 1.7 as well as some telephoto zooms from both brands, and its been very consistent! In Gordan Laing's review, he was using an older 25mm that he has never updated during his af test and it seemed to do great 😁
thanks! @MicroFourNerds I'm really considering selling my a7iv and coming back. I miss the stabilization and lightweight reach. Feels wild to ditch my sony set up. I love lots about it, but still miss my original g9 and only left cause I needed the auto focus. PS - yours was the first g9ii vid I watched. your channel is reason enough to miss shooting MFTs
Looks great, though shame about losing the top display and the lock on the function switch. Also, did I read that the EVF has a lower magnification ratio compared to the awesome G9 one? Great to FINALLY see Live Composite even if it still isnt as advanced as the OM1. And £1700 is higher than I hoped (and £200 more than in the US) though hopefully it will come down a little soon
According to my spec sheet, the g9ii evf is 3680k pixels and 0.8x magnification. And the original g9 is also 3680k but 0.83x so very very nearly identical 😊 almost double the pixels on the lcd screen!
Come on @Panasonic get this sensor on a GX body! I've been holding off on buying on Olympus OMD EM-5 MkIII for years because I want to stay with Panasonic! My GX-85 needs to upgraded badly. 😂 Another fantastic review! ❤️
Was between the G9II and the OM-1 for me. OM-1 just won by a nose and will be arriving this week :) Always been a Lumix user so looking forward to getting to know a new system
Alas, I have a question about the new 100-400mm lens. The previous iteration of this lens has a very stiff zoom ring. Does the new one suffer the same ailment? 😅 Looking forward to your full review of it from Kenya.
I really hope they bring out something like the gx8 II since I really liked the form factor: range finder style, full articulating screen, tilting OLED evf, bigger battery than the gx9. Sadly they really crippled it with the 2,5 mm audio jack, no headphone jack for monitoring, no IBIS in video mode and the not so great AF. If they would bring something like that I'd immediatly sell my Olympus em1 II that I currently have.
Hi, nice review. May I ask. How is the rolling shutter in OPEN GATE 6K video when movement is high, let's say walking. My G9 doesn't do it well hence asking.
i wish they would've caught up fully with omd in the computational photography department. it took them a long time to finally incorporate live composite. but they kinda stopped short because live ND is really where it's at. but where i've been really left disappointed is in the body. i think they took a step back with adopting s5ii chassis in a m43 camera. the curves, handling and top LCD on the G9 were just one of a kind. they really could've taken it to the next level with some minor tweaks and continued this lineage to really differentiate it from their FF systems. instead, here we are with the blocky and bulky s5ii chassis, lacking any real character. here we are with a generation defining camera in terms of features, and it was put in to clothes that are totally out of line with it's soul and function. i really hope this was a case of them having had to rush it out for production and their project managers forgot to assign a team for a chassis design from the get go. because co-opting an existing FF body, without mods i might add, for a m43 system just smells like that. someone's gonna get fired and we'll be able to get back to the G9 lineage in the next iteration. otherwise everything else in terms of features they just knocked it out of the park it's like as if they really wanted to put all those m43 doomsayers in their place. and put them in their place panasonic did.
Looks like cost saving to use one body for two cameras. Sad when this camera is very expensive. Next generation G9iii? Looking at 5 years again for that?
Thanks for yet another great video - everything we need to know in less than 20 minutes, fantastic images and your passion and enthusiasm for MFT is a breath of fresh air. Very much appreciated and I couldn't agree more about wishing Panasonic would bring these great new features to an updated version of the GX9 - including a better hand grip, EVF and weather-sealing. Just in case I am tempted - what battery does the G9II take? 🙂
Did you happen to use the external SSD through the USB-C? I was wondering if it cleared the buffer faster than writing to the SD card when shooting photos.
I'm saving up to get this for Christmas. I had tried numerous techniques with the DFD autofocus system to get good images but this will be just perfect!! Also, I can open myself up for more event photography next year with this!!
Thank you! I'm surious about two things - How far can you push the low light? Can it take up to 6400 ISO and give clean results? and secondly, can you record four channel audio with the DMW XLR-1? That one is a really important tool since it allows me to use the Rode Wireless Go II along with an on-camera mic when recording live events
15:57 Pana cut´s cost as much as they can on M43. This is an excellent example, the old case of the S5II for which already manufacturung and after sales exist. From my POV: This is shows that Pana is NOT committed to M43 anymore. an upgraded GH6 sensor, an existing, way to large case and the rest is software.
Nice review! Would it be possible and could we expect some of the G9II's magic sprinkled over the original G9 in the way of a firmware update you think?
The GH5 & GH5ii both do great with heat, I and recorded multiple baseball games in 95 degree Fahrenheit. 2 hours at a time, stop for a few seconds between games, and start right back up for 2 hours.
How does the sensor/image compare to the GH5S? I'm so in love with the image and colors it produces (also in low light because it has only like 10mp) and thought the perfect camera would be this with the IBIS of a EM1 mark II. And the G9ii... might just be that camera...? 🤯
Loved the video! Your reviews are always a delight. I own the S5iiX, but I'm thinking a GH9ii is in my future for next year as I have several M43 lenses already. I feel like these two cameras are the best of both worlds! Thanks Lumix! 100% agree on the smaller camera ask. Small cameras are just so much fun!
I am a wedding photograher and videographer, currently working with Oly EM1-MarkIII and i am really impressed with these. Thinking about changing to these. How about battery life? Vertical grip exist? Thanks for your video.
Battery life seems very good. Really good during the two weddings I shot with it in fact. Yes there is an official vertical grip accessory 😊 just make sure you watch the stress test section of this video - if you regularly shoot in very hot environments you may be better with a camera that has a fan for thermal management. Using it as my "all the tiny clips throughout the wedding day" camera was absolutely superb!
@@MicroFourNerds Thanks for your reply!! Yes, i watched the thermal test. I live in Spain, and we get above 40 celsius in summer. Probably is best to keep the Olys for continuous recording and 2 of these G9II as photo and small clips machines, and for winter weddings ;-)
LOVE your videos. And, I agree, if this was on a smaller body, I'd be SOLD. I'm looking for a jump up from my GX85, but keep flip-flopping between a GH6 and G9ii. But, now I'm wondering if I should just hold out for a bit longer (invest in some better lenses in the meantime) and hope a smaller camera body with Real Time LUTs, this top-notch autofocus, etc., is headed our way.
The deal breaker for me with the Panasonic G9 is that you weren't able to focus stack using flash, did they fix this fatal flaw in the G9II for macro photographers?
Thank you so much for this review! I think I'm sending back the OM-1 I purchased. I am not happy with the noise level at low ISO, the limited touch screen, battery not tolerating cold well, no charger with camera, slow refocus when zooming in and out, etc. Does the Lumi G9ii have a better touch screen? Faster zoom focus? Need to check out what comes in the box. Thanks again!
You just made my day when you casually mentioned the G9II has Live Composite!! Among other things this was one of the main reasons I went for the G90 over the G9 when they came out. Gonna share your video on my group (Admin here) Panasonic Lumix Series Users Group :D
I was considering the G9ii, but ultimately decided on the OM-1 due to the smaller size. After all, this is really the main draw for me in regards to uM4/3... smaller (and lighter) camera and lenses over APS-C and full-frame. I travel and hike a lot, and my full frame Nikon Z camera and Fuji GFX medium format are heavy and big to lug around. I bought the OM-1 and several itty bitty lenses and couldn't be happier. Real time LUTS would be a very cool feature to have though, in the OM-1 -- perhaps in future firmware.
Thanks for this. I’m about to get a g9ii for wildlife video to pair up with my OM1’s. I have a camera of each format upto Fuji GFX but micro 43 just works for me for so many subjects. Seeing your channel grow is great too. Well done.
I’ve been using a combo of the S1 and g85 (after my g9 went for a swim last spring) and nearly bought a em5 mk iii a few times but I’m sooo glad I held out long enough to see the product launch teaser come out. I pre ordered it during the announcement once I heard just a quarter of the specs. Very excited to make this my travel/skiing camera!
Wow! Am I the only one super excited for real time LUTS for photos? Messing with the Fuji recipes was probably one of the most enjoyable things back when I had an x100v, but the idea of having the customizability as LUTS is crazy and would make travel work so much easier!
@@MicroFourNerds - I never owned a G9 but liked the LCD on my old Canon film SLR. For just the exposure settings it’s nice and simple. The EVFs and back screens of digital cameras tend to be a bit cluttered/confusing/possibly set in the wrong mode for us old folk!
I just wish they'd have put in at least the 5.76MP EVF (if not the 9.44MP one Fuji uses). Can't have too much there... (and why did they go from 0.83 x to 0.8?). Looking forward to your 100-400 "Mk II" review (as well as, I assume, the 35-100 "Mk III"). I have both of what the current iterations of those and the one complaint I have with the long one is TC-incompatibility. I've no idea why they felt the need for a new 35-100 (other than re-branding it Leica).
No one has access to the raw files just yet, but the jpegs are looking very promising at higher isos than the g9 can comfortably take! As soon as I have something definitive I'll share it for sure 😁

Thanks!
Looks great! Can't wait for the Gx9ii 😊
I know right?! Take my money Lumix!!! (I really hope they make it!)
Dangittt. I already sold off my Fuji kit to migrate to Sony for work and Oly for edc. Looks like m43 might be my whole kit if this camera is anything to go by! Great vid!
You are a QUEEN of micro four thirds! Great review!
Thanks Pav! Your video is fab! 🙏
If they manage to put all this new tech in a smaller body, it might be the fist time I would really consider upgrading my trusty GX85 that has gone with me everywhere. The M43 market has too many perks and fans to just leave it in the dust.
The main perk being smaller than APSC…
Literally the best review out there!
Yeah, that's a pretty compelling opinion! Compact body and I would be all in, definitely on the shortlist though!
Do you know if the video autofocus will work with the Lumix 20mm 1.7? Some Lumix cameras disable some AF functions with this lens. Thank you!
That lens is notoriously slower for af isn't it! I'll have a test as soon as I'm able
@@MicroFourNerds thanks!!
What I really want to see is a head to head low light pixel peeping test against the G9 😉 Curious if the Dynamic Range is any better/worse with new sensor.
Richard Wong did a little bit of this...
@@Garrus4Spectre Thanks. Noticeable improvement in DR and noise. Plus more mega pixels for cropping. Looks like a nice upgrade in most areas over G9.
Nice review. Very excited to see the Om-1 comoparison. FYI- the original G9 has pre-burst already. Awesome feature.
It does indeed but only to 0.4 seconds. Much improved on this model 😊
Looking forward to the gx9ii.. I hope it is a small beast of a camera.
Lots of comments here of wishing for a GX9 ii (or maybe actually a GX8 ii) but I would prefer some of the features like phase AF put into a more mid-sized body like a G90/G95. The GX9 (I have one!) has essentially no grip even if you get the screw on grip and the controls are quite small for me.)
Thanks for the review of an excellent camera!
G9 II für Männerhände, G91 II für Frauenhände und die GX9 II für den kleinen Formfaktor. 😎
Yes,i need also a G9 MK 2 in a smaler Body with integrated ND Filter for traveling.
how would you compare now in 2024 the G9 ll with the GH5S?
Sorry, for the long rant
and really appreciate it if you could get back when possible!
thanks, Chris
As usual, I really appreciate the joyful spirit you bring to all of your content and reviews in particular. You are clearly having fun and it’s infectious. I 100% agree with you on the greedy greeds for a smaller Panasonic body w/phase detect. Maybe OM System will surprise us with a Pen EP-8!
Olympus has been including phase detection in its autofocus system for some time now (I don't know from which model)... I guess it won't be as the most experienced AF from Sony.... but how is it compared to the one from the Olympus?
Never mind!!! I asked before watch the whole video.... 😅😅
Fast becoming my favorite photography channel! Thanks
Yess!!A gx9ii with this ibis, autofocus and luts. The best EDC cam.
The camera that all m43 users were waiting for. WOW finally great auto focus
The af has impressed me SO much!
Can i use this camera for stop motion?
You can! It has stop motion feature that shows the overlay of the previous image as you work - it's on most lumix cameras, I find it super handy when I dabble 😊
I’m currently using a GH5 for video. I’m officially jealous of the af on the g9ii🤯
A great video as always! In regards to overheating, consider keeping the display folded out to allow more airflow to the back of the body and at least a few minutes will possibly be gained.
Will the autofocus work with Ef lenses using something like the Viltrox adapter or Metabones? Thanks!
I'm afraid I don't have the auto focus adapter to test, hopefully someone else reviewing the camera will give it a good test 🤞
Looks amazing. I love the top LCD on my G9, so it's a shame that's gone. Suppose I best get saving.
OOo - a GX9II would be amazing.
You better go with the GX880. Nearly as small but advanced in most regards.
Lovely review as usual, really enjoy your joyful personality! Makes me smile when watching your review Emily!
Yay! Did you test video auto focus with older lenses? I’m curious if there will be any snags in auto focus with older lenses.
@@MicroFourNerds Yes the LED screen looks nice!
GX9 Mk2, I'd be up for that!
Come on @Panasonic get this sensor on a GX body! I've been holding off on buying on Olympus OMD EM-5 MkIII for years because I want to stay with Panasonic! My GX-85 needs to upgraded badly. 😂
Another fantastic review! ❤️
♥️♥️♥️ incredible! Will there be a GX8ii 😀
I hope so but absolutely no idea 🤞🤞🤞🤞
I'll probably pre-order at launch. 👍
I love how half the comments so far have been asking for a gx9ii or a gx8ii 😂 I TOTALLY agree! Haha it would be perfect!
Looks amazing. I'd miss the mode switch on the front but sure i'd forget once using the improved AF.
Thank you! The g9ii takes the same batteries as gh6 and all the s5 cameras - DMW-BLK22
I especially appreciated your evaluation of the continuous video feature. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows with multiple cameras.
Did you happen to use the external SSD through the USB-C? I was wondering if it cleared the buffer faster than writing to the SD card when shooting photos.
Great video. Your focussing demo tells the story well that the G9ii is quite fast at locking onto a focus.
I'm saving up to get this for Christmas. I had tried numerous techniques with the DFD autofocus system to get good images but this will be just perfect!! Also, I can open myself up for more event photography next year with this!!
Yes this would be ideal for events! Snappy and reliable af!

Pana cut´s cost as much as they can on M43.
I feel that the S5 IIX had the AF slightly faster any time that a face was involved.
Also, the G9 II gets away with more because of the greater DOF.
Lovely... Just wondering about the pricing... Will people choose it over a FF body?
The GH5 & GH5ii both do great with heat, I and recorded multiple baseball games in 95 degree Fahrenheit. 2 hours at a time, stop for a few seconds between games, and start right back up for 2 hours.
I've shot many a summer wedding on the gh5 and it's never let me down! 😁
Fantastic review Emily. Really enjoyed it. Does it still have the focus stacking/post focus feature and "red mode"?
Awesome thank you!
Real time LUTS would be a very cool feature to have though, in the OM-1 -- perhaps in future firmware.
ohh yess!!! Vlog and unlimited recording!! that camera is a beast!
Looks very nice. It’s a pity they did away with the SLR style top LCD display. I liked that. Takes up too much space I guess.
Yeah I've seen a few people lament that. It is super handy for certain styles of photography for sure
@@MicroFourNerds And quick glance at settings without having to look at the EVF or screen. Shame to lose it on a photo stills orientated camera.
If it was smaller....
When are we getting a GX9 II?
Great review! Did you ever experience overheating in wedding, shooting at 4k 50 or similar?
No, never any overheating during weddings so far. But I did get it to overheat in really baking sun in my back garden!
@@MicroFourNerdsI'm buying one this week, hope it can wistand the hot clime of Spain. Thank you for answering!
Hello, could you do a photo and video menu tutorial? thank you
welcome to Kenya am sure you will love this place
Hey, what do you think of the low light photo quality of the camera and how does it compare to the G9? Thanks so much for making cool 43rds content!
No one has access to the raw files just yet, but the jpegs are looking very promising at higher isos than the g9 can comfortably take! As soon as I have something definitive I'll share it for sure 😁
It looks fabulous and plenty of bang for the bucks. The only thing I could hold against it is the size. It looks huge.
Great video Emily. Does the G9ii have in camera focus stacking?
It will automate it in camera, so you can press the shutter once and it'll take all the photos for you, but it won't stack to jpeg in camera
Well now I need to start saving up 😂 fantastic review of what looks to be a fantastic camera!
If you wait six months you will save 500 euro and get it for 1300... and a free lens. ;-)
@@GrenlandUnderVann Well now that's very tempting! Thanks for letting me know!
