I completely understand you. I love the ef-m system, even it is dead, not the best, no « pro » lenses… I love shooting with it ! Continue your work 👍 !
Affordable good cameras and lenses. Lately I have bought some vintage lenses and adapters. They are nice too. Samyang also makes good third party lenses for MFT.
You are so right about the versatility of micro 4/3 system. I love my Panasonic Gx9 with the Panasonic Leica 15mm 1.7. Together with 25 1.4 it’s all that I need. Thank you so much for the content of your channel. It brings back the joy of photography.
I find the weather sealing in MFT systems & lenses to be very good. Also, if I am in a really dirty, dusty env., I just carry 2 bodies so I don't need to change lenses. Very difficult to do FF.
As someone who is new to M43, I tend to agree with your comments, Emily. I am not so keen to lug a lot of weight around, and I sold off my (Fujifilm) X-S10 in favour of an OM-1. In so doing, on the equivalent kit, I saved nearly 2 kg, which is a lot given my age. I'm blown away by the IBIS and I'm also finding the lenses I have are *sharp*! I'm not much of a photographer, but I try and I enjoy my pursuit. I'm also aware that if I had bought a medium-format camera - not possible given my financial controller's... approach to expenditure - my compositions would not be any better than they currently are. You touched on computational photography: here M43 has indeed stolen a march on the rest of the world and given that camera processors aren't going to get any *less* powerful, I expect this feature to be expanded in the future - what if we had a combination of HDR plus hi-res mode in-camera? Phone cameras for a while have artificially adjusted bokeh for years now, so why not in M43? And applications from Topaz, ON1, DxO, and (probably more) are doing remarkable things with noise reduction and picture enlargement, with more to come for sure. I think that far from being at the end of its development, M43 appears to be surging forward. And that's a great thing for us all.
I love the M43 System too. ❤ I use also APSC and FF Cameras but I tend to use M43 90% of the time. I hope that we will see wonderful M43 cameras in the next months and years. My wish list is enormous: GM line, GX10, G9ii, GH6ii (or S, or X… or GH7), PenFii, OM3 (small like the OM5 but metal body new sensor and menu and USBC). I would love to see a new PRO Parfocal EZ lens for video. And more Wildlife and Sport Lenses.
@@MicroFourNerds just the PDAF would be a game changer but I've got a feeling that even if they would like to make such addition in their m43 cameras, it would be a top tier device, like G9 and GH series successor. Not a small GX series camera or something similar. And even if (too many ifs already ;)), that would be so pricey... Bye the way - GX9 is already 5 years old!
I bought my first m43 camera back in 2012, the OMD EM5, replacing my full frame Canon 5Dii. The other day I was going through a photography project I'd forgotten about and was marvelling at how beautiful these photos were, even if I say so myself! I loved that camera so much and it clearly shows in the pictures I took with it and the excellent glass i bought to accompany it. I still own all the lenses and will probably buy another m43 camera at some point. I still use m43 for video (GH5) and the footage stands up against the footage I take with my full frame Sony. Yes, m43 is still awesome.
I work with m43 singe 2020 as a Hobby photographer- since I was 8 years old. Tiny...with a gx9, in the middle with a g95/91 ....and with tanks like the g9 & gh6. A perfect matchable System!
I have that lens it’s a delight 😁 - but only f4. I don’t think there’s a full frame equivalent that is f1.7 (or even f2.8 if you factor in equivalency)
The GX85 is my first digital camera and I'm loving it. So far I have the 12-32mm and 45-150mm lenses that were bundled with the camera and purchased the cheap 25mm f1.7 a while ago that has impressed me with its sharpness. I'm thinking of buying a G85 as a hybrid camera.
Great video. Haven't you heard a certain pompus self absorbed camera "EXpurt" claim M43 is DEAD! Well I didn't believe it then and don't now. I have APSc from Sony and Nikon, FF Nikon, but by far the cameras I love to use the most are my GX85 (x2) and my EM10 mii and MiiiS. Will be taking GX85s with me in the fall as I travel to UK and Ireland. I must have 2/3 of my lenses are vintage and I have the adapters to M43. Adapting vintage lenses is one of the huge factors that I love about M43.
We really need to forgive him for that and move on 😅. Saying that, I do worry a bit about future of M43. Living on past glories at present. Panny/OM need to keep us excited about the future and they're not really doing that at present.
@@bingbong4848 No doubt, the newest releases from both Lumix and OM are few, far between and out of my price range. Plus Lumix is keeping their options open by branching into FF. On that front, will stick with my Nikons as well as all my M43 gear.
Yes, yes, yes, and yes. Yet, I still see FF dudes looking down their noses at me out on bird walks when they see my "little" Lumix G9 and 100-400mm. LOL. Let them spend their money on their $15K lenses that weigh nearly 3kg.🤣
I started m43 with a lumix gf1 + pancake lens 10 years ago and never abandoned it. I simply love the portability, overall quality of the system and perfect blend of photo & video. Moved to Olympus em10 few years ago and although the great skin tones and color balance (still think Olympus perfected it) I didn’t like the menus and operation. Went back to lumix with the G85 (had 3 of them in my company studio) and man this thing is a monster. Great video!
I used to shoot FF then I got an Olympus em1. I was immediately hooked. I now have an em1, em1 ii and a Lumix G9 and never looked back. My G9 is by far my favourite camera ever. The weight the lens selection the technology all in a little package that doesn't break your back or bank..... It was a no brainer to me. I also noticed I use the M43 cameras way more than I did the FF. Great video. Just discovered your channel through mpb email. Subscribed and 👍
Im still hammering away almost daily with my lovely old Olympus E1 i bought new a million years ago. It has never let me down once and has no faults or damage on it. It has had batteries bought and thats it
Discovered your channel recently while looking for G9II reviews. Subbed and grateful, thank you! Love your self deprecating enthusiasm for the format. Now I’m seriously contemplating moving to MFT from Nikon FF gear (which I’ve too belatedly realized is so big and heavy that it rarely leaves my house)! Have you done or contemplated a video for posers like me who are considering MFT for the first time - that is, what lenses to consider pairing with a LUMIX G9II?
I had the GH1 and OMD-EM1 and sold off the kit and now have a Sony RX10iv and Sony RX100m6. No more swapping lenses, autofocus is so much better and faster, and it has RX10 has a 24-600mm lens. I found it very inconvenient to keep swapping lenses and even though the M4/3 was small I like the simplicity of carrying around just one of the Sony's depending on situation.
Yep, I have no desire to go Full-Frame and I'm so glad that I ploughed all my pennies into Micro Four Thirds, especially Panasonic. I did have a wobble when Phased Detection was taking all the shine off my weapons of choice. But thankfully Panasonic has seen the light and is starting to release cameras with this feature. I can't wait for a GH (insert number here) with Phased Detection. Right now I'm loving my second-hand G9 and 200mm Prime bought from MPB. Having a six year old G9 second-hand camera, with the Pre-photo burst feature, paired with the sharpest 200mm prime lens on the planet has given me the best wild-life bird shots of my life. I have no desire to go Full-Frame, but the S5ii is giving me sweaty palms and making me think carefully about my life choices.😂😂
Nice video - glad you still enfusing about the MFT platform. One thing you didn't mention is that MFT can be really adaptable if you own other kit - with lens adapters from the like of Viltrox, Commlite and Metabones letting you use lenses from other systems such as Canon EF including the smart adapters that let you use autofocus and aperture control. This lets you combine other lenses with the crop factor and get lenses you just couldn't get on a full frame without breaking the bank (and possibly your back) if they actually existed - I use a Sigma 150-600mm EF mount lens with a smart adapter to get a 300-1200mm FF equivalent lens which is just crazy long but unobtainable in full frame. Put in on a 0.71 smart focal reducer and you have about 210-850mm with an extra stop of light. I also go the other way - using a Sigma EF mount APS-C 8-16mm rectilinear on a 0.71x smart focal reducer giving me approximately a 5.5-11.5mm wide angle zoom equivalent to 11-23mm - at the bottom of this range is wider than the Loawa 7.5mm, but not as fast or as light. There's also the classic GH5 + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 combo which can give a fast 25-50mm equivalent with a 0.71 metabones - as used by so many run and gun video makers (although for a more budget friendly option you could go with basically any MFT camera, a Viltrox EF-M2 smart speedbooster and a Sigma 17-50mm F2.8, not as fast but still good and a little bit more on the tele end being around 24-70mm ff equiv )
7:12 Agreed I have a Olympus EM1 - Mark III with Olympus 60MM Macro f2.8 its insanely so sharp you can zoom to the eye lashes of a person and still sharp even in low light and achieved this with one soft lamp, hand handheld 1/6 shutter speed and ISO-200 and f2.8.
I have been using M43 since 2013, when I switched from my Canon 60D. I don't think I'd still be into photography so much if I hadn't made the jump. The size makes it so easy to take a lot of gear anywhere. I can fit my GM1 in my pocket with a 20mm lens, or I can take my G100 and a couple of lenses in a reasonably small bag. Or, I can go full on and take my G9 and all of my lenses and still only need a relatively small back pack. Try that with Canon or Nikon.
Thank you! ☺️ I do love that I set all the cameras on the table upside down because I didn’t realise I’d need to flip the overhead camera 😂🙈 learning curves!
The size. And the focusing speed. I tried a Fuji. And it’s bigger heavier. So slow to focus. And you just tend to want to stop down. Or you end up with so much less depth of field. Which sometimes is nice. But most of the time a detriment. And with modern ai noise reduction, I really don’t want a heavier system.
I've never had an issue with the whole 'M4/3 f-stops aren't real because of depth of field' thing. Most of the time I shoot landscapes, where you want a decent DoF anyway, and because the lens are so small, if I do want to take a portrait will shallow DoF and lots of bokeh, if I have my camera with me I'll almost certainly have my Olympus 45mm 1.8 nearby, because it's so small, why wouldn't I have it in my pocket? That's the same DoF as on a full frame 50mm f1.8, with a more sympathetic angle of view for portaiture. If I'm lugging a full frame camera with wide to mid zoom around, I might have one additional prime lens with me, but it's unlikely to be a 90mm on the off chance I want to do a portrait. With the small Olympus primes the only reason not to have them in a pocket every time you go out with your camera is if you get absent minded when doing your laundry!
@@chrishowell5718 ended up sending the Fuji back. I just didn’t like it. Too soft. Too blurry. Weird glow around certain bokeh. Lens too slow to keep up. Camera slow. Lens wasn’t able to resolve as much as my 45 1.2
As I said in an earlier video, I ordered a GX80. The store claimed it was in stock, so even if it was way to expensive, I placed the order, because I can’t find any decent used ones. To bad Lumix have stopped making the GX9/GX80 style bodies, because for me to go with ha huge four thirds wouldn’t make sense being used to the smaller Fujifilm and Canon EOS-M cameras. Seems to me like the whole world want smaller system cameras, but both Panasonic, Canon and OM have stopped making them. I really liked the idea of the 12-32 and the GX80, but seems like I will have to deal with the larger lenses on the Fujis. At least til I find something used worth buying. (MPB is not an option here).
@@MicroFourNerds That would be great. I ment to say over that the store didn't have the GX80. So the only thing I can find now is the 880, but I don't want (yet another) camera without a viewfinder. So I hope to find a GX9 or GX80 some time in the future 😊
Yes I love the system. Its stabilization is something i, as former Sony APSC user could only dream up till now..and it used lenses is damn affordable and many. I have GH5M2 and bought GF10 for daily camera. Love its colour and sharpness.
I like M43, more specifically GH series because they are just lighter compared to APSC and FF cameras when it comes to video work. For taking photos, heavier cameras is still okay but for video work where the camera has to be held for extended periods of time, any weight savings is great. I've on numerous occasions been tempted to get APSC or FF but always held back when I calculated the weight of camera and lens. For some brands, you will even have to add a gimbal because the IBIS is as good as Panasonic, and that means more weight. Another killer feature is the EX-teleconversion which gives you 1.4 or 2.7X crop. A 12-35mm lens can give you effectively 24 - 105mm focal length. Brilliant. The downside is subject isolation or background blur isn't going to be as much as APSC or FF. There are the f/1.7 zoom lens for subject isolation but those are just so heavy for video work compared to the 12-35, 12-60mm. Another downside is the rubber quality of Panasonic cameras suck. I've a few cameras where the rubber has melted off or worn off so badly you can see the shiny plastic surface of the interior body.
I know this is not popular for creators but thanks for letting us know that you were using the GH5 for the top down shot. It looked great. I always question what I should use. I ended up getting a second S5 from MPB and bought the first one new at release. Would have saved some more money if I had seen this video. Oh well but thanks again.
Funnily enough, the thing I love most about the M43 system is that it lets me shoot on my full frame canon lenses. Using a .64x speedbooster I'm continuing to use all my full frame lenses and getting almost the entire image circle. Then when I need to make the camera tiny (for gimbal use) I've got a bag of tiny M43 lenses that can get the job done.
Can I ask what that orange and black camera you have is? Also the red one if I may? I honestly don’t know much about MFT but I’m learning about the system. My only experience with the system is I accidently ordered a jaoanese market only lumix and the menus and language was jaoanese only(DC-GF9). No way to change it to anything else. I ended up letting it go shortly after getting it but I have to admit that I really enjoyed it. It came with a 12-24 (?) and a 25mm 1.7. That 25mm shocked me with its color and look. What shocked me even more is the pricing. When researching I’ve found MFT lenses are a fraction of a cost compared to other systems. What’s your option on the LUMIX GX85? I see they are on sale here locally and it’s caught my eyes, I just don’t know much about them. Do they come with a BW mode?
SHARPNESS: Because rhe sensor is smaller, the 'edges' of the lens aren't being used to form the image. Most obviously from my point of view, if I use my Helios 58mm swirly-bokehtron lens on my GX8, it's functioning as a 116mm lens and the softer edges that i might see if I used it on a 35mm film camera don't fall on the sensor. Presumably the same thing applies with native m43 lens: convert an Oly 45mm for use on a 35mm sensor and you may find the sharpness tails off towards the edges that you never see otherwise.
I recently tried Sony full frame and strained my neck using Sigma 150-600. I decided to try the LUMIX G9 with the 100-300. Such a relief to have the lighter weight. Going through all my landscape photos, my favorites were all from LUMIX G100 and G9. The full frame and APSC were less appealing.
I love my m43 setup. OM1 and the 12-100mm f4 is such a versatile combi it can work for most situations. Of cos if i have the 150-400mm f4.5, that will be perfect haha. That would be the only 2 lenses I need to travel the world.
Great video, love the stopmotion, and I took my M43 out this weekend for some happy snapping, it was easy to fit in my bag and light enough to lug around all day.
Great lenses, great cameras. Great ability to mix-n-match, easy on the back, fun travel companion. Great stabilization. Great results. And they’e fun to use.
For me it's the size and cost. I stick with a basic camera (G100) and smaller lenses. $1000 for camera and four lenses. It's really all I'll spend on a camera system.
I freely admit I was skeptical of micro four thirds about 4 years ago. I decided to take the plunge with a used panasonic g1 and a 25mm 1.7 lens. I tend to have G.A.S. so I traded it out and didn't have another micro four thirds for a few months. I got the em10 mark 1 and for some reason it didn't seem good for my photography. I now have an em5 mark 2 and I don't see myself getting rid of it. Still have apsc cameras and might get an old mirror less full frame but the em5mark 2 fills a void for my style of photography.
I've come back to Micro 4/3 after a few years breaking my back with heavier setups and I'm so glad to be back. Money was seriously tight but I managed to find a gorgeous GX7 and the 14mm f/2.5 for less than £280 - Where else can you get that much photo power for less?
Wonderful video! I can definitely agree for the money M43 is amazing. From 2007 to 2015 I was purely a Canon DSLR and L series lens shooter. As nice as the gear was the bulk and weight was just a con overall. I decided to do some long term travel and ended up purchasing an OMD EM5 with the 14-42mm kit lens and the 45mm F1.8 and boy did that combo blow my mind. The image quality and more low key/portable nature had me taking way more shots than I did with the Canon kit. I was so impressed that in that moment I decided to jump ship and sell ALL of my Canon gear and enjoy what M43 had to offer. Fast forward to 2023 and though I own various other formats like FF and APSC. I still love my fairly extensive range of M43 kit like the Panasonic GH5, G9, G85, GX85, GM1, OMD EM10 IV, EM5 II and EM1 with about 8 different lenses. I'm pretty certain at this point I'll always have a M43 set up no matter what the future brings :)
love the mft system i have also a panasonic ff camera and a nikon apsc but i use my em10 mark iv 80% of the time when i go take photos its simple that amazing! also its my go to travels system i take it with me in my bag because its very light the camera and the lenses. only downside is could say is the low light performance and thats where i use my lumix s5
I fell in love with M4/3 in late 2012 when Olympus released the E-M5. A small and light weather-sealed body that promised IBIS so good you could leave the tripod at home? As a hiker, it felt like a system built for me. Fast-forward 11 years, I am still happily rocking an E-M5 Mk2, an E-M1 Mk2, and an E-M1X ... But, I must admit, the competition has caught up. Newer Sony, Nikon, and Canon offerings have been incredible, and some of the newer lenses have gotten so damn small, they're competing with M4/3 pretty closely.
I'm currently using both MFT and FF. One reason why I'm still keeping my MFT system is the 35-100mm F2.8, and I didn't find an alternative of it in the FF market yet. Other than that, however, I don't find size, price, and weight advantage in MFT lenses anymore. The gap is shrinking very fast imo. Recently, there are tons of budget, compact, great performing FF lenses from Sigma, Tamron, and Samyang. Options in MFT world doesn't seem as appealing as they used to be imo. But I still love MFT so much and I want the companies could give more love to it. For Panasonic, I hope Panasonic to release newer versions of its GX9 and GX880 while keeping its price good just like they did to S5II. Maybe I'm hoping for too much, but GX9 was way too big and heavy for MFT even though I did love using it. After I got my hands on the A7C and X-E4, I realized GX9 didn't have any size and weight advantage. Last but not least, I wanna see new budget 3rd party lenses are all AF, not MF.
I agree FF has got more compact at some focal lengths but if you want telephoto MFT still has a huge size/weight advantage. I have an equivalent of a 800mm telephoto kit that is still tiny in comparison with anything on FF. If I was mainly shooting portraits and wanted shallow depth of field then FF would be my choice every time. Both systems have distinct advantages that are dictated by physics and will never go away.
@@bitsandblocks7826 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! For long telephoto like you mentioned, MFT will keep its huge advatage for sure. Definitely I would have mentioned longer lenses like 100-400 if I have one 😅
I have been using MFT since I bought my GH4 like a decade ago. I now have a GH5s as my A cam (video) and pair it with an Atomos Ninja V. I have a G9 as my Stills camera but also as my B cam and pair that with an Atomos Ninja V I recently bought a GX9 purely for street photography and use it with a 20mm or 17mm or 15mm tiny lens. ‘But what about low light’? Not a problem at all as I have a couple of lenses that open to f1.2 and they can actually see in the dark!
Okay I really, really need your help! I have an Olympus E-PL3 camera, and a couple of Olympus lenses as well as several manual focus primes.(Manual focus without focus peaking...... I am a glutton for punishment.) I want to upgrade my system but cannot find an MFT system to my liking. Firstly it has to be inexpensive no more than $150USD. It has to have IBIS. It has to have at least a 16mp sensor. I am a retired gentleman and I do a lot of street photography. I would like to try Lumix this time. Oh did I mention I also have an EPL-2 and an E-PM1. (Its a long story.....) I know nothing about Lumix cameras except you seem to really like them. Oh did I mention that I don't do video. May I humbly ask what you would suggest I might consider? Thanks in advance for your reply. PS - I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!
Ok! So in lumix I'd look at.... Gx85/gx80 (same camera depending on region) And... well... for lumix with ibis that might be it! Aside from the model above which is the gx8. For olympus you have the em5 and em10 (all variations) with ibis hope that helps!
I have been a Panasonic and now Olympus shooter and I don't miss my previous APSC set up with Fujifilm. I love the colour science from these cameras and have literally got more beautiful prints from them than any other system. Just order a 16x12 aluminium print of our grandchildren and it looks superb! So why oh why do we ever need anything else?
Great video - love your channel on RUclips! I have an Olympus OMD EM1 Mk III and the Zuiko 12-100 f4 Pro lens, which I will be taking on some upcoming trips (Alaska, Iceland & the Norwegian fjords.) I'm also taking my Ricoh GRIII for just a walk around camera. I don't see any reason to carry any more than that, and it will all fit into an insert in my daypack for a nice minial size.
I have a very small camera bag and I have my Olympus Pen E-PL5 and the 17mm f2.8 25mm f1.7 and 45mm f1.8 and I've done engagement shoots super light kit when you want to go light and travel downtown by train or bus. Sometimes I will take my Olympus OMD E-M1ii and Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 and Olympus 75mm f1.8 and a flash. That's still a small kit compared to full frame but its a little on the heavy side. For engagement shoots and weddings I'll use Luminar to give some more bokeh but I only do a few photos. I don't have any luminar bokeh images on my site because I don't want clients to think all their photos will look like that was taken with a full frame f1.2 lens.
I love m4/3rds system since I got my first Olympus E-P1 many years ago now and have continued to upgrade when I can afford to, now having an OM-1, Pen-F, G9, GX8 and 10 lenses to have fun with ! I also love the LX100 I own and now a Pentax Q-10 with the 02 lens that I loved when it was announced and bought one about 2 weeks ago after seeing your Tiny Cameras video. I'd like to see a compact, pocket fitting, mid-priced, fully featured photography camera from Olympus or Panasonic that included all of their amazing technology and some 'borrowed' from the other guys to create a unique product that would be a world beater, not much to ask is it ? Keep going with your wonderful videos and reviews.
I am not in the market for a camera because of funds. I had to sell a part of my soul to get the Lumix GX85. I am very happy with it. I recently bought the Lumix 25mm 1.7 to go with it and I couldnt be happier. Hope it lasts forever.
You'd have to spend a lot more money to get better image quality than the GX-85 and 25 f/1.7 and you still wouldn't get better photographs. It's a great combination for anyone doing photography on a budget.
So I realized the LUMIX G9 with 100-300 made more beautiful images of a woodpecker than Sony A7IV. The bokeh was so gentle. Sony was really clinical. LUMIX was just pleasing.
The only thing that stops me abit when picking another M43 body, is when I know how... meh the image sensor handles in low light. But when I watched many M43 shooters do videos and photos, I kinda think that its not too bad at all... :\
I miss my Oly pl9. Unfortunately I sold it to venture myself on my first FF camera. had to go for a bigger sensor as I’m into astrophotography, and a friend of mine recommended me a good old canon 6d
Can you suggest 3 M43 lenses that beginners should have i have an EM- 10 Mark iii and i just have a kit lens still. Too many options between zoom and prime lenses. great video as well
I'm in the market for my first real camera with the intent of taking some photography classes at my local community college. The Olympus E-M10 Mark IV is on my short list, and I think your videos may have just brought it to the top. The pros certainly outweigh the cons in my opinion, and since I've never owned or used a DSLR-type camera with interchangeable lenses before, I won't be missing anything by not going with full-frame. At least I don't think so.
Thanks, all good points. MFTs has a size advantage that makes it easier and cheaper to make high quality lenses which I have taken advantage of. I came to Olympus late in the party, unfortunately only after they were resold to OM, but you can see the passion in the detailed design of products from the Olympus company. It's clear that they had a vision of what they saw as photography (which seems to suit me). I don't know where the company is going now, we'll see. But I hope they continue to provide new products that people want in the 2020's.
The reason why I like M43 is that you can make it whatever you like without much downsides. From very small and light to big and weatherproof, all lenses and camera's fit. Try that with your Canon EF-S and EF bodies and lenses...
I’ve been using my employer’s Canon R7 kit with the consumer primes and 24-105L. While the sensor is a bit more advanced, I still prefer my Lumix cameras and lenses. The Lumix lenses focus faster and more accurately overall. The Canon 50/1.8 is inferior to Panasonic’s budget primes. I forgot how superb most MFT gear is. The system has some limitations, but the quality of the results are not much different from even FF when used properly with great glass.
Hi. Did you ever follow David Thorpe? He was for years the m43, guru. Sadly no longer with us. His reviews were legendary. You seem to have picked up were he left off. Loving all the reviews. Just bought from MPB an 2012 olympus you reviewed to go with my gx7.
all other system lens have some sweet spot.. in Micro 4/3 shoot any aperture .. the non pro lens are cheap and deliver better image quality compared to any other systems lens lineup. this system is still compact. and that 360 flash on oly !! many more things....
I got Micro 4/3's because I HATE full frame and apsc telephoto zoom lenses with a passion. TOO BIG, TOO HEAVY, TOO EXPENSIVE it's just not fun for me to use. I never thought I would own a 600mm or 800mm equivalent lens, but with Micro 4/3's it's possible! The small size and usability make up for the loss in quality. I went on safari for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it's like I fell in love with photography all over again.
Great thoughts! I love the combo of really pocketable EPM2 with 14mm F2.5 pancake lens and E-M1 with 75-300mm lens. The latter set doesn't compromise on ergonomics like a truly pro body and cost me a puny A$600 second hand!
Yep, you are right. Lens are sharper than Most FF for the same price. And this is the cheapest way to adapt almost any vintage lens to the digital world.
I use a Panasonic S5II as my main camera (mainly for video), but I still love to use my GH5 and Olympus lenses. I like the size compared to the larger body and lenses of the S5II. I use it when I am out and about for general purpose photography and paired with the Olympus 12-40, makes a great combo with that zoom range. I take my GH5 when I am going to museums, local events and I also use it for taking photos of wild plants, buildings and whatever I see when I am out and about. I also use it when taking macro shots for the increased DOF and the longer crop factor over FF and the size of the much smaller size of the Olympus 60mm macro lens. My macro setup on my S5II with the Sigma 105mm DG DN macro is much bigger and heavier and the focus motor is noisier than the Olympus, plus the Olympus has a longer equivalent focal length of 120mm which is useful sometimes.
Another great point about mft is it's one of the first mirrorless camera systems(maybe even the first, dunno). Which means there are more second hand offers for good lenses and they tend to be cheaper. I hope mft will be one of the first systems to introduce computational photography as well, like on pixel or iphone cameras. In theory it should be easier to implement on mft than on fullframe for the same reasons why it was easier to add 4k60p. Computational photography will help with narrower dynamic range and noise on high iso. If tiny phone sensors are able to produce good photos, imagine what mft sensor will be capable of!
I loved my gx7 lumix with 20mm and 45 and thought it was better than Fuji x100 and Ricoh gr. but I swapped to iPhone 12 Pro but I am going to go back to m43. As you say there is a real magic. Canon and Nikon are great but m43 is great, fun, massive range and quirky.
I just picked up a used GX7 to complement my E-M5 Mk III and I just love how the camera feels! The grip and handling is just perfect--it's a shame they moved away from that design in later GX cameras (I also had a GX85, which I gave to my daughter).
Quite like MFT, have a G9 which has more tools and abilities than I can really use. Camera a bit too big for my needs though. A lot of the Sony APSC and respective lenses are now quite small and very tempting, largely for the AF (G9 almost perfect that way in ok light). Just wish the Sony IBIS worked better. Perhaps an OM5 might be the ‘just right’ choice?
I moved to micro four thirds a few years ago for casual photography very happy with my gx80 and the stock lens. Looking for 2 budget lenses to complement the 12-32mm kit lens so any recommendations would be great
Got my first MFT camera way back with the G2, then the GH3, GH4 and GH5. Now I have the GH5M2 which is really a new camera in a GH5 body and well worth the upgrade. The compact quality lens system is the deal breaker along with Pnasonic's interface, reliablity and usablity. I can get the camera plus 5 or 6 lenses into a carry on bag making a significant difference to travelling.
Tbf you persuaded me earlier this year, and I've since traded in with mpb haha so now got a better fit for me camera and yeah thanks:) still got my Canon gear mind u!
I'm loving M43 now especially after Lightroom's AI-powered denoise update. Woo! Made the switch in 2019 from a Nikon D600. I was having regrets at first. But now I feel like a power to be reckon with 😆
Do you prefer the idea of adapting ef glass or do you like using native lenses more? My thing is that the ef lenses are a lot better for manual focus and there are a lot more options, but native has image stabilization and they're much much lighter. The main benefit of ef though is that you can always switch lens mounts and then just get a different adapter. It's all very tricky! There's not really a perfect way.
@@MicroFourNerds Okay, good to know. I've been debating switching to all ef glass with the speedbooster, but it's a bit pricey! I use the Oly 12-40, a Meike 16mm cine, and then a random SIrui 35mm anamorphic! I'm trying to consolidate my lens options now, lol. It can be overwhelming with three different lens types 😅 If you have any thoughts as someone who has been using mft for much longer than I have, let me know, it would be appreciated
If you were like me, taking photos during bicycling or traveling, you would need the most portable gears available out there. MFT is perfect for me, not just the smaller size of the camera bodies, but more importantly are the size of lenses. I don't print and display my photos in my living room, only share them on social media. What's the point of using full frame for this kind of photography?
Great video, as always(!) I've recently 'discovered' the olympus 14-150 lens, and it's become my 'standard' lens. The image quality of the thing is RIDICULOUS, with outstanding sharpness in the centre from wide open, and the corners not far behind! Combined with my 9-18mm and an EM10 mk3s, I have everything I could ever need in one tiny bag.......... apart from the fast primes I have in another bag with my EM1, of course, but those are another story!
I want a s5 as it is better in some ways but i will buy gh6 also as mft has advantages i don want to give up. I will own and i will be very very happy with it.
Unfortunately all the weather sealed primes are the Pro versions in Olympus and lumix, so tend to be really bulky! I have taken the non weather sealed ones out in the rain etc but nothing too bad as it can always be risky.
ugh I just wish there were more weather sealed lenses that takes advantage of the small form factor. I would do anything for a weather sealed version of the Panasonic 15mm F1.7 and keeps the small form factor
Although my m43 cameras are hardly the latest models I still enjoy them. (A few GX8s and a GF6). The smaller cameras do not intimidate people so much and you can get shots that you couldn't with a larger camera. Sadly camera manufacturers have always reinvented lense mounts so we have to buy into a whole new system. I do have quite a variety of lenses, and a few adaptors for non native lenses. Sometimes it is just fun to buy a cheap lense to play with like my ridiculous telephoto which has never been great but is always fun.
Size and weight... My work kit is 11kg of Canon gear. Really makes me appreciate my own Lumix gear(used for 10 years, from G2 to G9) which I also use for work sometimes when I CBA carrying 11kg....and clients don't know any difference!
Absolutely in love with your channel, I've been looking for a decent (compact) interchangeable micro 4/3's camera with an onboard flash, do you have any recommendations?
A love letter to micro four thirds ☺ why do YOU love the system??
Lightweight, stabilisation, a lot of lenses. Yes, really sharp lenses, Sigma 56mm, Sigma 12mm, Sirui Anamorphic lenses...
I love it because I've always had a thing for out of focus birds 😂
I completely understand you.
I love the ef-m system, even it is dead, not the best, no « pro » lenses…
I love shooting with it !
Continue your work 👍 !
I love it because I could get a very affordable camera with image stabilization and weather sealing that I love shooting with!
If only m43 producers loved us as much as we do love this system...
I’m holding out hope for some new models! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@MicroFourNerds Did you have any inklings or rumours? Or did you just wish the new Lumixes into existence?
I bought my first m43 camera back in 2012, the OMD EM5, replacing my full frame Canon 5Dii. The other day I was going through a photography project I'd forgotten about and was marvelling at how beautiful these photos were, even if I say so myself! I loved that camera so much and it clearly shows in the pictures I took with it and the excellent glass i bought to accompany it. I still own all the lenses and will probably buy another m43 camera at some point. I still use m43 for video (GH5) and the footage stands up against the footage I take with my full frame Sony. Yes, m43 is still awesome.
M43 is the best mount. You can adapt every film lens and with an ef adapter every other lens. The sky's the limit.
I work with m43 singe 2020 as a Hobby photographer- since I was 8 years old.
Tiny...with a gx9, in the middle with a g95/91 ....and with tanks like the g9 & gh6. A perfect matchable System!
8:00 yes there is one: Lumix 24-105 for L-Mount. Image stabilisation and macro. Love this lens.
The wait for the Lumix G with PDAF is killing me.
Likewise, a G90 with PDAF would be awesome.
@@NotALot-xm6gz G85 Mk II !!! (basically a G9 Mk I with pdaf packed into the body of a G85....)
@@vk4244 Even better! Even if I had the money, I haven’t seen anything yet that I’d trade my G85 in for!
At least we got a g9 mk2 with pdaf 😉
Always love your positive attitude towards M43, we need more people to come over!
Subscribed and 👍
Hi Emily, I can't say I care about m4/3 much these days but I always find inspirations from your photos.
I love how compact these things are. As you know... LOVE the GH6 :D
Get oneeeeee 🤣 joinnnnn usssss 😂
Hashtag not a cult
I'm a new M43 shooter (around a month), moved from Fuji to the Olympus Pen-F and Lumix g3. Love the Pen-F with the PanyLeica 25mm f1.4
Why i love MFT? Lenses, bodys, features, ease of use... And the Panasonic app.
That top down camera is fancy! Great video, very comprehensive, informative & super fun!
Thank you! ☺️ I do love that I set all the cameras on the table upside down because I didn’t realise I’d need to flip the overhead camera 😂🙈 learning curves!
@@MicroFourNerds We actually didn`t notice, looks great!
I fully agree with your points. In fact, I might be selling my A7II with 28-75mm soon and just keep my E-M5 MkIII with a bunch of prime lenses
Lens wasn’t able to resolve as much as my 45 1.2
I've bought the Oly 25mm F1,2 yesterday! My first high end lens!
Love my G85. I’m toying with the idea of a G9 next.
I would love an updated gx80 that was a fantastic camera! The form factor and style was ideal
@@MicroFourNerds That would be great. I ment to say over that the store didn't have the GX80. So the only thing I can find now is the 880, but I don't want (yet another) camera without a viewfinder. So I hope to find a GX9 or GX80 some time in the future 😊
@@MicroFourNerds Hope the GX9 replacement will have an audio in jack. Love my GX85 so much I haven’t upgraded to the GX9.

Yep, totally agree on all points. Wondered away for a little but definitely back in full force.
I just got into MFT and bought 2 Olympus cameras from MPB, I use them to sell my gear to as well.
Emily, What is your impression of the Oly 75mm f/1.8? Is it too tight for portraits? I see there are so many available on the used market!
5:05 totally agree! Love M43 system 😁
I have a G9 as my Stills camera but also as my B cam and pair that with an Atomos Ninja V
I recently bought a GX9 purely for street photography and use it with a 20mm or 17mm or 15mm tiny lens.
Gx85/gx80 (same camera depending on region)
And... well... for lumix with ibis that might be it! Aside from the model above which is the gx8.
For olympus you have the em5 and em10 (all variations) with ibis hope that helps!
It helps. Thanks.@@MicroFourNerds
Oh boy, this brings back memories to my Oly E-PL6 which I´ve used for many years before switching to Sony APS-C (mainly cause of the AF-C).
Can you suggest 3 M43 lenses that beginners should have
i have an EM- 10 Mark iii and i just have a kit lens still. Too many options between zoom and prime lenses. great video as well
Do the four thirds lenses have the aperture ring on the lense, like Fugi?
I'm in the market for my first real camera with the intent of taking some photography classes at my local community college. The Olympus E-M10 Mark IV is on my short list, and I think your videos may have just brought it to the top. The pros certainly outweigh the cons in my opinion, and since I've never owned or used a DSLR-type camera with interchangeable lenses before, I won't be missing anything by not going with full-frame. At least I don't think so.
Love to use my GH6s with the Sirui anamorphic lenses
Thanks, all good points.
MFTs has a size advantage that makes it easier and cheaper to make high quality lenses which I have taken advantage of.
I came to Olympus late in the party, unfortunately only after they were resold to OM, but you can see the passion in the detailed design of products from the Olympus company. It's clear that they had a vision of what they saw as photography (which seems to suit me). I don't know where the company is going now, we'll see. But I hope they continue to provide new products that people want in the 2020's.
Do not forget the tilt evf of the GX8 that makes so much fun! 😃
Can you do a demo on the sirui anamorphic wide lens?
I did. He was awesome ❤️
all other system lens have some sweet spot.. in Micro 4/3 shoot any aperture .. the non pro lens are cheap and deliver better image quality compared to any other systems lens lineup. this system is still compact. and that 360 flash on oly !! many more things....
Looking for 2 budget lenses to complement the 12-32mm kit lens so any recommendations would be great
Ooo I have the perfect video for you! I go through my favourite budget and tiny lenses here 😊 ruclips.net/video/bGZMTeKSsTs/видео.html
@@MicroFourNerds oooo thank you. I'll have to watch that!
But now I feel like a power to be reckon with 😆
great video. We love MFT In fact it is the best!
Do many of the micro 4/3rds lenses (especially Olympus, have an aperture ring on the lense?
Just a few Lumix Leica lenses, like the 15mm f1.7 or the 200mm f2.8
Do you prefer the idea of adapting ef glass or do you like using native lenses more?
My thing is that the ef lenses are a lot better for manual focus and there are a lot more options, but native has image stabilization and they're much much lighter. The main benefit of ef though is that you can always switch lens mounts and then just get a different adapter.
It's all very tricky! There's not really a perfect way.
It isn’t anything I’ve used too much, but there’s also the benefit of using a speed booster which will make the aperture faster as well!
It can be overwhelming with three different lens types 😅
If you have any thoughts as someone who has been using mft for much longer than I have, let me know, it would be appreciated
Nice and informative. Pity most of the small cameras are gone. A gm5 type with evf would sell well imo looking at how they are snapped up used
Love my GM-5
does there exist a compact weather sealed prime for m43 somewhere between 14-17mm?
With a flash, we have the Lumix G100, the Lumix GX800, and the GM1 from my collection! The olympus ones usually have a mini detachable flash, or none
