To answer the question on whether blind people have better hearing, it's only sort of true. It's not like blind people's ears are any different, there is no increase in auditory signals or anything. That being said, blind people get far more practice at simply paying attention to what they are hearing (helped by the fact a greater portion of the brain gets devoted to auditory processing as vision drops to 0) As a simple example that anyone can try, walk down a sidewalk that is adjacent a fairly busy road that has a number of large objects in between the sidewalk and the road (ex. bus shelters, greater than head height vehicles that kind of thing). Walk along the sidewalk with your eyes closed (if the sidewalk isn't clear, get a friend to help so you don't hurt yourself) and pay attention to the traffic sound and how it changes. Besides the usual doppler shift, you should fairly easily be able to pick out the momentary interruptions in volume as the cars pass on the other side of the object. Congrats, you now know an object is present without sight or touch. This "auditory shadow" can be observed with any sufficiently large object in between yourself and any sufficiently predictable source of sound. It sounds like the simplest thing (and really it is), but people who are fully sighted almost never pay attention to it, even though they technically hear it.

In many cases, a control group for a medical study isn't not treating them. The goal is usually to show the new treatment is better than the old treatment, so the control is a group given standard care. The main exception is if the risks to the patients are minimal (like the common cold) or there's no current treatment (like rabies post symptoms, since the only treatment that was thought to work has since been shown to be ineffective).
