    I remember seeing an alternate history about this scenario, where after King George I's death, the other founding fathers, who would be the American Aristocracy and Nobility, go to war with each other, splitting up into multiple smaller kingdoms. I can't find that exact video, but the idea stuck.
    If Washington were King, I have thought of possible titles of nobility for other Founding Fathers. For instance, John Adams, Duke of Boston, Samuel Adams, Earl of Braintree, Thomas Jefferson, Duke of Richmond, Benjamin Franklin, Duke of Philadelphia, etc... Then as the nation expands west, those titles of nobility.

    At the Constitutional Convention, Federalists like Hamilton pushed for the Executive to serve lifetime terms and essentially be a de facto monarchy. Their reasoning was the same as to why we have lifetime appointments for Supreme Court justices today. They believed if the Executive was in for life, then he could be above politics and govern as he saw as the best course for the nation without worrying about reelection. Thankfully, the Federalists didn't get their wish.

    I think the Butterfly Effect makes answering this question near impossible since Washington would have been pushed to have biological children if he were crowned, and that then throws this whole video off track since there’s no certainty that any of the later people would even be born but it’s an interesting thought experiment in any case.

      Yes which is why the maker of the video said multiple times that history probably would have played out differently. If Washington was able to have kids he would have been pushed to have kids. His kids would have likely also have kids and the line would've kept going to now. Also some others things would have changed.

    I think the Mr. Vernon line probably would have had the greatest claim to the throne for the the stated reason that the Senior line was based on an older brother. At that point, who would care about George's father and whether there was an older half-brother. I do not see why if George had been King that we would go backwards to an OLDER male sibling to determine his successor.

    • @sims1279
      @sims1279 3 года назад +2

      Like he said, succession is traditionally primogeniture, or eldest gets it. That's the norm, and especially so for European monarchs, with the major exception being those "born in purple." This is a term for Byzantine Emperors' children who were born in a special birthing chamber with purple walls. Quite literally, born in purple. They were born imperial prince and princess, while their elder siblings were merely the sons and daughters of a noble who has since been elected to that position.
      Throughout his early reign, Otto I of Germany, or Otto the Great, had to contend with rebellions from his brother, Heinrich (or Henry) of Bavaria. Henry claimed that he was a prince while Otto was merely a duke's son (Otto had been born whilst their father was merely the Duke of Saxony and Henry after his election of king). According to him, it too made no sense for the German crown to go back through a less legitimate claim (the German crown was not hereditary and they never had "born in purple"). Ironically, it was Henry's grandson who would be the last Luidolfing ruler.
      Anyway, this scenario is strange because it starts with a middle son on the throne rather than the eldest surviving line. But in a scenario with no specific documentation stating otherwise, it would go through the senior line 10/10.

    My family got very into family history recently and traced my mother's line all the way back to Richard Warren, one of the pilgrims to come over on the Mayflower. That in and of itself isn't all that special considering how many surviving kids he had who also had kids, but it is noteworthy that our line comes from the Warren/Billington union, when his great grandson married the great granddaughter of John Billington, who was infamously the first person executed for murder in Plymouth colony. That was a fun thing to learn.

    From my POV, i think that if America became a Monarchy, it would have used the British Succession Rules. So if we follow those rules, the Crown would have gone to William I Washington, then after King Bushrod II's reign, his Daugher Estella became a Queen because the British Rules say that Crown will go to the Sovereign's oldest *SON* but if Sovereign didnt have any, it would go to the oldest or only daughter, not the closest male. Then after Estalla died, crown went to King Lee and then to his daughter became Queen Odelle

    Hey, nice to see the channel experience so much growth. Congratulations and thank you for all the work you've been putting into it.
    I know this is a nitpick and probably not something worth changing at this point in time, but the stroke order for the channel intro feels a bit counter-intuitive (if this is even the right word for it) to me.
    Every time I see the first "\" stroke, I'd expect the "/" to come next in an upwards motion, acting as a connector completing the "V" and transitioning into the "T" and only then followed by the horizontal stroke for the top of the "T".
    Obviously there might be a different reason or meaning as to why the current stroke order is "\", horizontal line, "/" that I am simply unaware of.
    Sorry, I know this is not a big deal, just wanted to share my thoughts on what I perceived to be a "more natural" flow for the intro.

    Its possible they could have had an elective monarch system, where people would vote for a king. Either voting specifically within the Washington family, choosing from a variety of noble houses (who those houses would be, idk, so i think this is the least likely) or just having anyone be electable as king, basically a vote for a life-long president. At the very least their could have been an election for who would be king following washingtons death

  • @just_radical
    @just_radical 3 года назад +1

    So I understand this is beyond the scope of a simple genealogy succession but I'll post what I did on the original video:
    Since Washington died without an heir and since by 1799 Adams and Jefferson were political rivals it's entirely likely a war of succession would have taken place. In this regard Bushrod Washington becomes extremely likely as the chosen successor of the Adams faction as he was appointed to the Supreme Court by Adams and once there he almost always voted in agreement with John Marshall, another Adams appointee, Adams Secretary of State and political ally.
    As for who Jefferson would have backed I am less clear. Choosing the young Parke Custis and ruling through him as a puppet seems like a Hamilton move but it was certainly a viable option, but William Washington's Revolutionary War credentials also would make him an attractive candidate.
    Parke Custis may ultimately have ended up "disappeared" like so many other young princes in revolutions.

    A good and fun theory my dad always used to say was that George was adopted by the Washington family after being ousted from the royal family by his "brother" the King of Great Britain, only certain people knew he was the Kings brother and that's why some suggested he become King of America and he refused it to avoid the wrath of the monarchies in Europe. I always laughed at it but it's just fun to think about

    a couple of things most in the lee family follow what Robert E Lee wanted when it came to monuments of the confederacy, you can read his letters in the digital archives but he said none should be built. Also, Robert E Lee IV has passed away back in 2020, so I can confirm that as a member of the Lee Family, I am Edmond J Lee's descendent which makes me 1st cousin 6 generations removed of Robert E Lee, Robert E Lee V is now in Virginia and there is a Robert E Lee VI both are alive and well.

    I have done genealogy on multiple lines and have always noticed that some lines have not very long lives and other ones the opposite. I'm thankfully part of a long line of long lived people. A couple early deaths, but luckily it was self-inflicted type stuff like drug abuse and alcoholism vs. disease.

    Out of the three I kind of agree that the senior line seems like the most likely one that would’ve happened. I can understand the logic about the Mt. Vernon line but whose to say he would’ve been able to choose his successor? Obviously he was beloved and the fact there were so many people pushing him to be a king may indicate that he might have had the ability to choose an heir but who knows. Given that in general though monarchies are about the senior male heir, it would make sense for it to go to his senior nephew. Especially since it was a young nation and that going to a non-senior male may have possibly cause conflicts over who was the rightful king, so they probably would’ve wanted to avoid that and just go with the most obvious choice in terms of lineage.

    The problem with this video is: It assumes the marriages would have happened as they did historically. But a royal House of Washington might have been inclined to marry into European royal houses or other higher status families. Thinking about their dynasty more than they did. The problems of hypothetical history. Its a fun idea though.

    It does makes you wonder how radically different American society and politics would have been if they adopted a more british styled monarchy. Would that have meant feudal titles were a thing in US? Could we have dukes and counts of various cities and counties? How radically it would have altered the politics themselves? Like, I could imagine a future where Manifest Destiny and South vs North split still happened, but instead of the american civil war over seccession you got southern states backing a different claimant to the throne that was more supportive of slavery instead of abolition.

    I think it would behoove us to consider if GW chose to begin a new monarchy, doesnt it make sense GW would have been influential in creating royal succession laws given no heirs and presumably distinctly different from English law that would benefit the Washington family or at least to GW's own desires? just a thought.
    Great review. never thought of this before. one point of technicality, we are not even sure they would have used their baptismal names or chosen a regnal connotation. Of course, Bushrod and Spotswood would have definitely kept their unique and awesome names.

    23:05 I grew up watching time team and I like Tony Robinson bc of that but I found that program where he tracked the guy down in Australia to be embarrassing really. Though it does illustrate the lengths to which the Tudors went to extinguish any Yorkist claimants. I am more of the Ricardian school of thought that Edward was legitimate but his children werent and this has a completely different line of alternative succession. Either way, Henry Tudor based his claim on conquest and parliament has since 1689 set the rules for succession to the thrown and the current monarch is the legitimate heir to Sophia of Hanover, designated as heir to Queen Anne by Parliament.

    I can understand him believing the green line the Mt Vernon line as the most legitimate line, because if this was a monarchy, GW would likely adopt someone similarly to how had been done in the past in England. Assuming that was allowed, and if so it's reasonable to think he would adopt the same person he chooses to leave a majority of his stake to.

    There is one mistake in this chart and one important event that happened after the video posted
    1. George Washington's paternal grandma died in 1701 at age 30 years old, that would be weird if george washington's grandma died at 110 years old
    2. Robert E Lee 4/IV died back in 2020 if you were wondering if Robert E Lee 4 was still alive or not. I could'nt find the obituaries for the other descendents of Washington.

    I realize the narrator stated to keep the rest of history the same, but what would be different had Washington been made king? Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory so would that become part of the U.S.? Which regions would be part of the U.S.? How/when would slavery have been resolved under a king instead of a president? A lot of fun what ifs to consider.

    I’d also recommend AHH’s video on the topic cos while Useful Charts is just documenting this based on the names and evidence we have, AHH gives a much more realistic and general take on what would have happened if Washington had seen the Crown of America in the gutter and picked it up with his sword, so to speak.
