Top tip I would suggest is cut two bits of plastic pipe the same width as your Axles. Even though the screw in they are not treaded both sides so once your wheels are out and your bike is under a pile of luggage both your fork and rear triage can be crushed and damaged.

    • @TechERni

Thats a really good suggestion, packing a bike with 155mm dropout and taking it out with 142mm wouldn't be nice. Haha

Once again I will promote the merits of the Topeak mini ratchet as seen more than once in this segment. Brilliant tool.

I would like to add that you make sure you know where to take your bike box or bag for the oversize luggage scanner and give yourself plenty of time to get to it as its often not that close to the regular check-in desks at some airports!

The helmet bit is key. Had no idea they didn’t count safety equipment towards you luggage total. Does that include pads as well?

#askGmbnTech I got a full sus trail bike last November. I’ve been riding it ever since, almost every day, without a fork/shock service. I know it’s probably overdue getting one, but both my fork and shock (Rockshox Recon RL and Rockshox Monarch Rt) are still running as buttery smooth as the day I got the bike. Because of this, is it worth getting a service anyway? Would I still benefit getting a suspension service even though I can’t physically feel anything wrong with them? Thanks in advance Anna and Doddy, love the Tech channel, and always look forward to the weekly tech show!!

Forgot about brake spacers, and I wasn’t sure about rotors, but now I know. With through axels, is there a need for axel bushing/sleeves? In the USA flying on Southwest Airlines, the limit is 50 lbs - or pay more if over. it would be tough to get my rig in a box and have it weigh less than 20 Kg.

put your wheels in one box and the rest of your bike in a second box? I travel for scuba diving and weight is always an issue. I have two medium/big pelican boxes, my wife checks one with half my gear and I check the second box with half my gear, she doesn't dive.

I was thrilled to get my snowboard, boots, helmet, goggles, gloves, and outerwear all into my gear bag and still be under the weight limit on my last trip out west. Never considered the implications of my helmet taking any knocks that I didn't know about though. I won't do that again now that I know better, thanks Anna!

Glad you found this useful! No, you can keep sealant in your tyres. However, it's well worth deflating your tyres a bit due to the change in air pressure. 👍
