  • Welcome to Crimson Guitars ruclips.net/user/CrimsonC... and welcome to Crimson Guitars and another Mini-Torial with Ben Crowe.
Last week Ben was asked for advice on Hand Planes clogging up; so here is his practical guide to the causes and the correction of this common hand plane affliction...

4:58 "Exasperating the problem....." - Ben - when your command of the English language escapes you, it always does so in an entertaining way. One of the main reasons I watch this guitar building channel more than any other.

Thanks for this, Ben. This will really help. The sad thing is that I have this problem with an out-of-the-box plane from a big box store.

Good video. I have had 2 clogged Stanley planes all afternoon and they are razor sharp and the throat of the plane looks dandy. I will try levelling the chip breaker like you says and also get it 3/4 mm from the blade end.

I thought the chipbreaker and cap iron were one and the same (American and English) and the other one was the lever cap.

@Ben I don't know what's up with your mic's lately, I wanna say the last couple of months but I'm not 100% on the time line but there's an awful lot of crackling going on sound wise recently

Actually, according the Paul Sellers, the cap iron is what americans incorrectly call the chip breaker and the thingy you called the cap iron is actually the lever cap.
Also, Paul says (and it kind of makes sense) that chips are not actually broken in a bench plane. In fact, there are no chips but long shavings. As opposed to power planers that need to break the chip to prevent clogging the extraction.
The thing that prevents tearout is actually the mouth of the plane!
Finally, what is then the true function of the cap iron if not to break chip? It is to make sure that force is applied to the plane iron close the business end, to prevent is from bending up and chattering.

While I do not disagree that the chip breaker does not break the chips, It can help control tear out. I have tested this my self on several occasions, and there is a video somewhere on the internet of some Japanese researchers that backs this up. I must admit I do not fully understand the mechanics of it however. The thinner the shaving your are taking the closer to the edge the chip breaker needs to be in order to work, but also the harder the plane becomes to push. At some point it gets too close and you crush the shavings int to an accordion like shape that likes to clog everything, which is no good. The optimum setting seems to be when the shavings come out almost straight, as opposed to tightly curled (too far away) or to crushed (too close). For hogging off material however tear out is not such an issue, and so the chip breaker should be set back from the edge a little to reduce the required effort. That is my view on the matter at least.

neistridlar I think this has to do with micro-chattering of the iron. With a bevel-down plane, the force on the iron is very much not in line with the direction of the blade. So when there is force on the blade, it will bend, until the wood is weak enough, at which point it will jump back up, tearing the wood. By putting the edge of the cap iron closer to the cutting edge, you damp that vibration, thus reducing this effect. The strongest proof for this theory is the fact that bevel-up plane don't seem to suffer from not having a cap iron. This is because the force is almost in the direction of the plane.

i have a silly question...yes i know it IS silly but its ok lol. I understand the basic differences in the various planes..sizes, angles etc. But u have heard people talk about setting them up differently. This confuses me because i thought there were only 2 ways to properly sent the blade and breaker depending on the planes purpose...correctly...or not lol. the breaker has to be where it needs to be...the blade as well i thought so assuming i have say two identical no, 6 bench planes or 2 block planes..is there a way to set them up so they are different, in essence giving me 4 tools or are they simply just duplicates? see told ya it was silly

Hey! what really sucks is the old Crimson Guitars logo/sign above your head on top of the tool unit. It's about time you changed it. I of course blame James for this error.

I'm making a guitar in school. But I'm not sure what I should do about the neck. I have a rough shape but I'm not confident with making the cavity for a truss rod. (It's a bolt on neck like a strat)
Could you do a mini series on how to make a neck???
