I didn't expect to feel this so deeply... but seeing someone on such a huge platform cook food that I know and eat regularly makes me feel SO seen. Chetna's cooking is soooo Indian. I love it
Oh my God I have never been so impressed with someone's presence you are pure delight to watch to listen to, this recipe looks absolutely comforting and so heartwarming.. looks wonderful I can see why moms love to cook this for their babies when they're sick oh so special,!! Or whatever ale's u.. the combination of the yogurt and turmeric and chivken in the rice nd the lentils, especially looks so good ..It's a must-try so relatively easy, you make it look simple.. wish me luck from out here in beautiful San Francisco California loving it.......
My Bengali roomie used to make a vegetarian version of this, and it was always a treat. When I heard about the Brits turning it into a brunch dish full of kippers and the like, it sounded awful to me. Then, one afternoon at a tea room in London, I saw kedgeree on the menu and knew that - for better or worse - I had to try it. I loved it. Basically, I’ve never met a mushy rice dish that I didn’t like.
Yum, just YUM! I've made Khichdi from many sources and always love it. I am always surprised how good and comforting it is. I suppose it is like Mac n Cheese ... if you never had Mac n Cheese, you might think "Huh" ... anyway, thank you and I will be trying this version.
I made this recipe for tonight. It is delicious. There was just two of us for supper, with lots of left over. I think that the warm up tomorrow will have a more blended taste with all the spices. Do you think that a couple of servings could be frozen? 🇨🇦 😷
Searching "Haufson Asteroid casserole dish" brings up something very similar to this, but not quite the same, my quest continues! Putting this here in case people want to buy cookware that has this vibe 😁
I just made this but I had to make a couple substitutions because I didn't have cumin seeds or plain yogurt in the house-I used cumin powder and buttermilk. I also added peas since I didn't have lentils. Even with my substitutions, it is absolutely delicious. My family approves as well. Thank you so much, Chetna! It was lovely to see you on RUclips.
This looks delicious!! Do you have a vegetarian version with chickpeas or another veg? I would love to try something like that. Do you have any suggestions for me to try?
You can also just leave out the chicken and yogurt. I grew up with plain khitchuri/khichdi and it’s still a nutritious one pot meal thanks to the protein in the lentils.
Nilay W and Sasentaiko are right -- you can riff on this however you'd like! But if you want to follow a recipe, you can also try try this one from our site: food52.com/blog/16728-a-one-pot-indian-comfort-food-for-sickness-health-summer-winter Thanks for watching!
I was wondering the same thing. According to this, yes, you can: www.veganricha.com/indian-dals-names/#:~:text=Split%20chickpeas%20(Chana%20Dal)%2C,peas%20can%20be%20used%20interchangeably.&text=Red%20Lentils%20(Masoor%20Dal)%20can,can%20also%20be%20used%20interchangeably.
@@delirium129 You definitely can! Khichdi can be made with any kind of split lentil and we often use a mix or whatever is available at home. There are also regional variations based on locally available lentils. You might have to adjust the water a little (with khichdi it's safer to add more so it's a bit more soupy imo), but the basic concept should work great :)
I’m new to Indian cooking. Just want to know what kind of chilli powder you use. Is it cayenne or sweet chilli powder. Cayenne is very hot for you taste
It's plain Indian chili powder - you can get it at the Indian store in varying levels (some are labeled extra hot, so one would need only 0.25 tsp v/s say a half or 1 tsp of regular chili powder). Kashmiri chili powder will give you a very bright red color but not as much heat. Indian chili powder is pure chili, unlike Mexican chili powder which has cumin, oregano, etc. added to it.
I khichdi'd my Khichdi 😂 There was still a lot of water left afyer 25 min. I cooked it for another ~15Min. probably. I should try it with less water next time.
Always always use clarified butter in indian cooking. It's the best for flavour enhancement plus it's most healthy. Avoid oil and butter. Also this is the style of khichdi made in all of southern and western India. The bland version is only and only north Indian.
If you put any nonveg thing it's not khichdi, stop calling it khichdi. You can call it biryani but not khichdi. And whomever may have told or you been inspired by its wrong information. And it's not khichdi, its insult for the traditional delicacy.
There ARE regional traditional Indian versions of khichdi with meat and poultry, do your research and stop being so uppity. She clearly mentioned hers is not the traditional vegetarian version.

I love that authentic cooking is being given a platform here! Indian food is DELICIOUS, the more people can learn about it the better.
Chetna makes me feel like everything is going to be okay :) Such calming positive vibes.

I think it's hilarious that I was just watching season one of The Great British Baking Show and now there's Chetna in my subscription box!
Just realized I'm watching this with Food52 and not on your channel, Chetna! Get it girl!

I weaned my children on Khichdi, I remember my dad making it for us all when we were sick too
Simply delicious !!! I'll make it for dinner !! Congratulations on the recipe. A blessed week for all the friends who are reading.🥰🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘😘
I’m definitely going to make this. It looks like the perfect comfort food for this quarantined cold winter. Thank you.
That dish does look great and must be so delicious too and one which most families would love to have for their families.
This looks awesome and fantastic presentation. I going to make this once find garam masala, cardamom pods and moong dal.

Exceptional recipe very well presented. Thanks for the recipe link!
I would like to know about the cookware you use in your videos and also the color of the wall behind you. Can’t wait to make this dish.😊
Does anyone know where that pan is from? It's gorgeous! I tried Google lens-ing it but it kept coming up with omlettes 😅
Looks like a granite stone dutch oven type pan
Searching "Haufson Asteroid casserole dish" brings up something very similar to this, but not quite the same, my quest continues! Putting this here in case people want to buy cookware that has this vibe 😁
Granite cookware. Pyrolux is a good brand.
It almost looks like my carote pot

Those sound like smart substitutions! Thanks for sharing
Please show some stew-dishes with lamb and fennel. I love your practical home cooking!
love Chetna's recipes!
Thank you for this recipe. Will definitely be trying this.
This looks lovely! I know there's a sweet version of this recipe which has raisins and almonds...can you make that?
This looks great! I made khichidi once before and liked it fine, and this looks like it would turn me into a lover of the dish!
Thank you for this recipe! This will be on our weekly dinner rotation.
Love her hair! 🙂
Made this recipe tonight and I enjoyed it so much, thankyou Chetna x
This looks delicious!! Do you have a vegetarian version with chickpeas or another veg? I would love to try something like that. Do you have any suggestions for me to try?
Just add veggies of your choice (I add potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, peas) instead of chicken.
You can also just leave out the chicken and yogurt. I grew up with plain khitchuri/khichdi and it’s still a nutritious one pot meal thanks to the protein in the lentils.

I’m interested in the pan too.
Wonderful as usual, Chetna! Wondering if I could use red lentils instead of the moong dal? It's what I have on hand.

It may very well be Kashmiri chilli powder. It's milder than cayenne and fairly common in Indian cooking as far as I know.

Look very delicious 😋 😋🤤
Def going to make it! More of this chef please!
She has her own channel, if you just search her name.
Been searching for this recipe!!!! Thanks!!!
Yummy recipe dear friend... Mouth watering... 😋😋😋...All the best...
Looks fab thanks!
I would like to see you make a cabbage dish with mustard seeds
Thank you chetna...I will try this recipe🙏
Thank you
I love her pot.
She is delightful.
So Yummy
Lovely as always!
Khichadi is incomplete without Ghee...lol
Adding chicken is such a smart idea, would love to try that
so it’s similar to a heavily spiced mujaddara?
More like this please!
Yes please!
Looks Yummy!!!
What is mondall?
Moong dal is what she said, I believe. Split mung beans.
Yummy
I'm guessing that this inspired kedgeree? But this looks a leaps and bounds better than kedgeree I will have to give it a go.
Congratulations
There are so many varieties of rice available on amazon.
So funny with us Moluccan people we make also something like this which is called bubur!
well I know what’s on the menu this week.
Ohhh man that looks tasty
I only have split red lentils, are they ok to use instead of moong dal?
Yes they have almost same cook time as mung dal. Just soak it so it’s cooking time will be same as rice.
@@renpot4815 Thank you! I tried this and it turned out perfectly. Such a delicious dish :)
So Nice 💘💘💘💘💘💘
