  • The 1440 has amazed me not only that I can ladder start it consistently and how easy it is to pump, but how maneuverable it is for a relatively big foil. Assuming that the name 1440 stands for its projected area rather than actual area, I thought it would be as difficult to ladder start as foils like the NL220 and the PNL185 & P180, which I get less than 20% success rate when ladder starting, as opposed to over 90% when using big foils like the Axis 1300, 1150 or the Go Foil GL240, which are all upwards of 1700cm2 or 1800cm2. The 1440 is an awesome foil for winging, SUP foiling and now it seems I can add dock starting to the list of what it excels at. It's speed is good for a foil of it's size, similar to the PNL185, but it has a MUCH better bottom end, with a stall speed as low as the big foils I mentioned earlier - I found myself recovering from situations I would only have been able to save myself with the PNG 1150 from Axis (IMO the easiest foil to flat water pump on the market at the moment). When pumping the 1440 you can tell you're going fast, and it's easy to find it's rhythm. Like other foils it performs best when you keep relatively high on the mast, and it's easy to so, as well as bringing it's speed up if you need to. If all this wasn't enough it's maneuverability is simply out of this world for a foil of it's size - it's reactive but stable, easy to initiate and carve through turns, and has a really lovely surfy feel - you can drive off the back foot, and it really generates speed and maintains its lift through turns. Like all foils that are fast, it takes more energy to pump than the big, slow foils, but it really does seem to be a LOT easier and much more forgiving to pump than other foils in the 1300cm2 to 1600cm2 range. It has a unique shape (even without the turbicules) and is more mid aspect ratio than HA. IMO it has all the performance characteristics of a HA foil of its wingspan, combined with all the benefits of a foil with great low end. The Kujira lineup really have left their mark on me - their glide, lift, low & high end and especially their turning performance all add up to give what is as close as possible to the perfect all round foil!!!!!!!

    With the Slick wings I've used the 980, 1210 and 1440 (all on the 85 cm. mast). To get up on foil I need the power of the 1440 to use my Slingshot Dart wings and that's in descent wind -- the Darts don't have much area upfront to pull back on (triangular shape so they don't generate much force upfront to pull and pump against -- they probably require a different technique from the Slicks) to get on foil. The 1440 excels at upwind angles -- it has the lift and stability to keep one on foil at high angles of attack -- I tilt the board some to windward and push hard on the front foot and this thing flies upwind! The limiting factor is the Slick not the 1440 and the Slick is really good upwind -- once the Slick backwinds a little I massage it by heading off wind to pick up speed and then back up. With the 7 metre Slick I can get up on foil with very little wind (I do have to pump my butt off) -- I have two boards so I'm going to compare the 1440 to my i99 Slingshot foil for light wind. The i99 is 900+ sq. cm. larger in area but from experience of riding both in light winds I think the 1440 will have a very competitive bottom end -- should be interesting. One thing I do know is that the 1440 has a much larger controllable wind and speed range than the i99. At this stage of my foil progression the i99 is easier for me to pump but that may change as I work on and hopefully improve my technique.

      I love your videos. I have enough experience to recognize just how good you are (and relaxed) on the foil. You really showed off the glide capabilities of the 1440 on your smooth effortless turns. Keep those videos coming! The advancement in winging equipment and technique has surprised even me (I thought it would move forward quickly since it could borrow so heavily from mature sports like windsurfing, kiting and surfing but it has taken on a life of its own and the equipment and technique improvements are coming at warp speed).I need more time on the water (more wind!) so I'm looking into an e-foil board or a foil drive. @@dominichoskyns9091

      I can't recommend FoilDrive enough. Having used a proper full efoil (which I can see has a use but they are soooo heavy I'm not really a fan) for me personally I would go with the FoilDrive every time. They are so versatile, catch waves that you'd never be able to catch, catch them way earlier for longer rides, less effort so you last longer and catch more waves, easy up fir downwinding, easy up in low wing winging, use a smaller foil in any situation...the list goes on...
      Please mention me to them if you get one, and if you do I'd love to hear how you get on with it🤙

    Hi Dominik ! Thanks for all your contents. Just got one from Takuma. I'll be trying it soon. all the other wings of the range are crazy good. I see you use the KD Tail ! I ordered a 13' from kane. which size are you using for the 1440 ? same as with the smaller front wings. Are you happy with it compared to 220 and 178 standards takuma rear wings ? keep up the good work 👍

      That’s my question too, I’ve seen others using those Kane tails, and wonder what is better about them. I haven’t gotten into pumping yet, just winging and wake, and have been liking the 1440 paired with the middle tail that comes with the 1300 lol, the one without winglets. I find it the Goldilocks stab.

      Huh, I just looked it up and the 1300 lol stab is a medium aspect 210, while the stock 1440 stab is a high aspect 220. I actually thought in the first shot that’s what you had it looked so similar.

      I use a 14.5" KDmaui tail for dock starting/flat water pumping and a 13" KD for everything else. Much better than tbe 220 kujira tail and all other lol tails. I haven't used the 178 so can't comment on that

    In the Wake Thief series for Dock Starts he recommends back foot landing first. In your Ladder Starts you are landing with the fornt foot first. Approximately how much pressure distribution do you think you are pacing on your feet at initial starting (ie. 80% /Back 20% Front). Since you are dropping down from a greater height without a runway compared to the Wake Thief this may also make a difference. Would like to get your feedback and the Wake Thief's as well. Great riding, very inspiring!

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  2 года назад +1

      I think which foot you land with first is a matter of personal preference, but no matter which one is first there can only be a split second between them both landing or you'll either nose dive or catapult backwards. My aim is to land with both feet at the same time with equal pressure and glide for a split second before my first pump, but with the 1440 I ended up modifying my landing without even realising, probably to generate more speed because its a much smaller foil than what I'm used to starting this way and the smaller foils need more speed to stay on foil

      The wake thief was unable to dock start the tk1440... perhaps the Kujira requires the “other” foot first. Thank you for your input on this subject!

    This is very inspiring. I am planning to dock start the 1440 next spring. I am torn between a 4.6 37L board (new axis pump) and the smaller 4.2 30L board. Do you think the 4 inches will make a big difference? I'd like to get the bigger one as I could also use it for winging (160 lbs) ... what size boards do you use for pumping? At what length does the length of the board start to impede your pumping efforts?

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  2 года назад

      That's a tough choice you've got. There will be a significant difference between these two boards for dock starting and flat water pumping. The smaller and lighter your board is gives a big advantage. I have a 4'8" board which I tried to start from my ladder once - never again! It made it so hard it wasn't enjoyable at all. The only way I would use a 4'6" for dock starting is if I could do a run up along a platform before jumping onto the board. That would make the start OK but it'll still be a pig to pump around due to the added size and weight. Most people use tiny boats for dock starting. Mine is 4'0 and 32ltrs which is fine, I would say a 4'4" is probably the biggest you can use comfortably but only if it's super light (around 3kg). The best boards are wake boards which are super small (3'8 / 3'10), thin and light. I know it's tempting to get one board to do both jobs, but at the end of the day sometimes the compromise isn't worth the saving. If you're not going to do much dock starting then go for the 4'6, but if this is something you're planning on doing a lot of you'll be wishing you'd got a smaller board pretty soon. The Axis tray is an awesome board for dock starting and flat water pumping and the new model of the Froth is better suited for winging than the Pump. If cost is a definite limitation then maybe the pump will do both but like you suspect already, the 4'2 will be OK for dock starting but will be difficult for winging, while the 4'6 will be difficult for dock starting but OK for winging. The 4'4 froth will be awesome for winging (more volume than the 4'6 pump but roughly the same weight) and the small tray would be awesome for dock starting. (Any board over 4kg isn't a good option for dock starting. 3.5kg and under is OK, under 3kg best.) Go on... You know it makes sense 💸💪🤣

    • @dominichoskyns9091
      @dominichoskyns9091  2 года назад +2

      No - it's a lot easier to start and pump than other similar sized foils due to it's amazing low end, but like all the mid sized, faster foils it takes more energy to pump than the big foils. It's low end is amazing though, especially when you consider it's top end is every bit as good as foils like the PNL185... and don't get me started about how nice it is to turn - such a surfy feel!!!!

      I got the aluminum set up. The connections are very poor at all points. They need to reengineer what they are doing. When the connection is tight it flies amazingly. I’ve spend a bunch of time on the 1210. But bolts at all location except the stabilizer come loose in 30 -60 mins of riding. I’ve even used teflon tape to make them sticky. I’m hung up between returning the wings and maybe using epoxy at all connections to make it all stiff and permenant. Not sure what to do. I wonder what other people doing with these issues. I cannot be the only one.
