My dad literally NAILED THE TREE TO THE FLOOR every year when I was little because he got tired of the cats knocking it over! My dad was hilarious and he loved our kitties.

I used to be in charge of securing my mum's Christmas tree with metal wire to a hook above it on the ceiling :D The tree wouldn't fall over but the kitties still got to the ornaments. Nowadays the tree is out on the glazed terrace. The living room windows are floor to ceiling so we can still admire the tree safely through the glass and not have all the inherited glass decorations break 😺
We gave up on a real tree long ago. The last 3 years, we've done something new. We have a fake tree and we hand real Christmas cat toys on it. There's always a red ball, a few bells, and other unbreakable things. They sell a lot of cat-themed cat toys at the pet stores. It really looks more Christmassy than we expected. And then.... We found a cat nativity set. We are crazy people.
Worse is when it is half way out. OMG one Christmas we saw our cat walk by, with half of it hanging out. Son took off after cat, cat ran all over house, I was up all night bleaching everything.

We put out tree up this year almost a month ago. So far neither one have messed with it much. We FINALLY figured out a way to deter them from doing so. We put a train around it that has a bunch of red. Neither one of my cats is a fan of the color red for some reason. When I turn the train on they just stare at it as it goes around the track. When it isn't on, I've got a WiFi device that has a motion sensor that allows me to "toss" them treats or a ball. It also does it even when they walk by the tree or tap the top. That way they get something of their own to play with.
I LOVE how you could only see Cole's eyes in the sliding glass door!! 😻 My kitties don't bother my tree's. A couple of times they messed with the lowest ornaments. But never climbed it. We'll see what happens this year! 🎄

Hanging the tree upside-down from the ceiling is an old Polish tradition. If you have double -hung windows, you can straighten out a wire coat hanger, hook it around the tree trunk, and hook the other end around the sash lock on the window lock.

I've come to understand cats are apex artists as well as apex predators. The combination of these two traits is the reason behind their unwavering desire to "redecorate" everything especially the tree. It's just a matter of artistic preferences. In time after retouching the tree all day and completely redoing it in the morning you begin appreciate a new aesthetic. The beauty of a scarcely decorated tree lying on it's side with the entire room randomly filled with scattered decorations has a certain appeal. So just pour a Chrismas libation, sit back,(carefully as certain ornaments on the sofa can damage the nether regions) and enjoy the lights twinkling across the floor, under the accent tables , around the love seat, hanging off the lamps, trailing down the hallway.......

Hahaha! Funny but true! One year my tabby cat decided she wanted to explore the "topper" on my tree so up the center she went! Thank God I had a very sturdy well-balanced base for my tree so no damage was done. And her running up the middle of that tree was so funny it was hard to get upset with her - so we laughed instead!! Great memory of my tabby girl who's gone now! Thanks for sharing this video, it was fun!
I cemented the base of my artificial christmas tree into a plastic plant pot... NO way my little ball of fur can topple it over. Only cat friendly decorations too in paper and material 😊 She doesn't like the smell of the actual tree so no worries of her trying to make it into a snack... Catmas achieved!
My Cats will ignore a real tree, but love to climb on my Snowman tree & my Winterberry tree! So they have some droopy branches! I gave up on ornaments, & just have lights! I know right? This is actually pretty much a non-problem. I have lots of friends with one or more cats and none of them have trouble with their feline friends destroying Christmas either. MAYBE the issue could be that this guy seems to go out of his way to cater to the cats at all times. It's good to take good care of them and provide them with what they need, but cats are like children. If you cater to their every whim and give them everything they want they WILL grow up to be spoilt little brat-monsters who behave quite badly - and destroy your Christmas decorations..

I gave up on Christmas trees years ago....I now have a "Christmas fridge" Hand painted wood ornaments that I glued magnets onto the back of and just decorate the fridge. Festive and safe for the little terror in my house known as Chloe.
