  • Rear-drive version of Tesla’s first mid-size electric SUV brings more value and efficiency 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
    It might look like a blobified Tesla Model 3 sedan, but the frumpy design of the new Tesla Model Y hides a very competent, efficient and versatile mid-size electric SUV that’s proving hugely popular with Aussie buyers.
    We couldn’t quite match the entry-level RWD version’s claimed 455km range, which also falls short of some other similarly-sized battery-powered SUVs priced around $70,000.
    But there’s plenty else to like about Tesla’s most affordable SUV, as Feann Torr discovered after living with the Model Y’s integrated vehicle systems, autonomous driving functions and its performance on crummy Australian roads.

    It's becoming a no brainer to get an EV over a petrol car in the same price range. Combined with solar i paid nothing all year to power both the car and house. Then when you decide to get an EV a Tesla is the clear winner.

    I must say, after sitting in a Tesla looking straight ahead with a side way glance to the speed and back again, your peripheral vision still sees the road, which is how our eyes are designed. On my digital display in my car, the speed is at the bottom directly in front, which means when I look down briefly, my eyes are completely diverted off the road. So I think all the fuss is not actually there…maybe just me.

      What the critics are noting here is that it's "different' without considering whether it's no worse. It's already ahead of a dial, because it's a number. Then it's much higher up than most speedos. There is no way this is slower to look at than the digital speedo on my Ranger, which is in the right hand MFD in the binnacle. These car reviewers are jumping in and out of different cars all day, and they only get to keep (non long-term review) cars for a week, so reviewers never get used to having the speedo there. For owners, it will become normal within days. Even if they have another car.

    Thanks for this video on the Model Y RWD. It is Aug 2023.
    I just got the 2023 Model Y long range vehicle because I wanted the AWD hatchback for winter time here is Northern Illinois. Plus it has a little longer range to it with the bigger battery. As long as I charge to 90 percent at home, this battery should do pretty well.
    I am retired and just drive around town or short trips, so battery range is not an issue. I really like all the features of the Model Y and my 2023 vehicle has the HW4 and newer cameras. Also like the single pedal driving and regen braking of the Model Y. I did not get the EAP or FSD driving modes. The basic Auto Pilot/Cruise control are adequate for me.
    The Model Y should work out very well for me and I enjoy driving it. Take care.

    One thing to note is because the LFP battery is smaller, the slower DC charging speed is enough to charge the car at the same % as the bigger, faster charging lithium ion batteries. Also the LFP is less demanding - charge it to 100% or not. Should stay healthy longer

    I don't mean to sound picky , but blowing the horn on how wonderful the boot space is when it has no spare tyre , no jack or tools .
    Clearly conventional cars that come with items such as a spare and tools deserve more praise than a vehicle that doesn't, i too think not having a conventional dash binnacle in front of the driver is an absolute fail , also these barges don't even come with roof grab handles for those that need a bit assistance getting in and out of the car.
    As for sentry mode , I'm a bit sceptical of its use as from what I've seen, the sentry footage is not of very good quality when you look at it closely imo.
    The minimalist thing is taken to the extreme and way to far imo , there are some things that work on the central display, but plenty that imo should be knows and buttons.
    Tesla has a way to go before I would consider one.

    Question: can the size of the font showing the current speed be made much larger? The lack of heads-up-display or something large and central to the driver showing current speed is a stupid omission by Tesla. Many other RUclips reviewers mentioned this about Model Y and Model 3.

    • @baglessnoblades
      @baglessnoblades Год назад +3

      Size can't be changed. I own a 3 and was worried about this but you get used to it very quickly. I don't know why he complained about taking eyes off the road because you have to do that for a conventional Speedo anyway.... It's just a slight glance left instead of down.

    • @yuribudilov5638
      @yuribudilov5638 Год назад +2

      @@baglessnoblades Thank you. Sad. I am sure we can get used to almost anything. But this is a significant inconvenience given in Australia we do get booked for going 5 km/h over the speed limit. I am aware of 3rd party gadgets for Tesla to mount centrally and display the speed. So there is a need, a market and a fix that exists. At the very least, Tesla should make the current-speed fonts to be (optionally) larger. They claim to be an IT company, this is just a simple thing to add/fix in a few lines of code to allow Standard || Large || Extra-Large font for the current speed display. Not an ideal solution (HUD is better, please) but it is better than current display font, IMO. Different drivers have different vision ability - some people aged 50+ need driving distance spectacles and separate reading spectacles. When driving they may have blurry vision of the current speed to be able to see driving distances well, unless they buy special multi-focal spectacles.

      According to reports, one of the next updates will have an option to make All text bigger.
      But one thing people don't realise is that one-pedal-drive provides a very different experience. It's way easier to keep the car at a constant speed and you don't actually have to look at the speedometer as much, especially when you're at the limit and would usually need to make constant adjustments.
      Finally, it's so easy to turn on and change the speed of cruise control that you end up using it all the time. You just press one of the stalks and it imediatelly sets cruise control to the road's speed limit. Then you turn the scroll wheel to increase or decrease the speed.

    • @yuribudilov5638
      @yuribudilov5638 Год назад

      @@raphaeldwain7834 I understand it. But in future this car needs to appeal to non-tech drivers who do not want to be aware of all features, they just want to get in and drive. I have a HUD on my wife Toyota Yaris, and now I have a problem driving a car without it. Tesla is offering a lot of features but just like Windows PC, and MS Officer, 90% of the users wont be taking any effort to learn them. Things need to be easy, recognizable, and IMO Tesla has a lot of work to do in this area.

      We have the most kilometres of road per capita in the world. There is a very good reason.
      Your tiny little country has a fraction of roads we have and about 7 times the population. We also have heavy rain seasons and flooding that damages the roads and a high density of heavy transport vehicles

    Fail to understand why people buy these EVs ? They don’t drive good, they are LOUD on bitumen coarse chip Australian roads, and they are completely devoid of driving fun.. don’t care how fast they are. People should buy turbo charges in line sixes like X5 !

    Old design frog inspired Tesla's are most dated design of EV industry. Old 400 volt architecture, no Vehicle to Load (V2L) technology, no digital drivers display. Bland no flavour.
