@@godwinehidiamen9904 If the sleeve head is too big for the armhole then you can either gather it between the notches before sewing it on (gives a cute puff sleeve effect), or you can shorten the vertical line that connects the shoulder to the bicep. If your sleeve head is too short for the armhole, then you can either make the sleeve head taller or increase the width of the bicep measurement to account for the difference. I hope that helps!
Finally somebody who really knows how to explain. I thought I were stupid, turns out all I needed was a good explanation and an honest demonstration like yours. I love your channel, but mostly the decent and kind you. Thank you for your time and effort and everything you put into your channel. Best personal regards from Cairo, Egypt. 😍
Instead of pattern paper I've been using wrapping paper with a inch grid on back. It makes things so much easier and I have a use for the ugly wrapping papers I get from multipacks. It's a win-win in my book.
This is a great tutorial! I am new to sewing and want to start drafting my own patterns. This is the first tutorial that I’ve watched.:.and I’ve watched a ton...that explains the why. I have to know why I’m doing things and this was perfect. I can’t wait to watch more of your tutorials!
Hello Priscilla. Firstly, thank you for this video. Sleeves have always been a mystery to me. You have given a masterclass in laying a pattern for sleeves. I am grateful. Secondly, thank you for not rambling. I appreciate that you get straight to the video. I do not want or need chit chat. I just want to learn so I am very glad to see that this is what you do so well. Thirdly, thank you for using regular tools that most people will have, with the exception of the pattern maker. I have my own and it is the most used tool in my dress making tool box. And finally, thank you for sharing your skills with us. For me you are one of the best teachers on RUclips. Have a good evening 💐😁👍
Pattern making is a chaos in the mind of a beginner, but creative and challenging. I wish you all the best out of it. Thank you Kim for sharing with us valuable clear steps. I think not just me appreciate your materials. So, keep up with the good work!
I just wanna say that it makes me feel so much more confident that I can do this too knowing that the sleeve pattern you created was your very first one. Being a novice at sewing I’m searching so many video XD thank you so much for uploading this!!
i've seen a lot of posts on here that have also helped me to understand the potential issues i may run into relative to this video regarding ease, seam allowance, etc. BUT, by far, this was the most clear-cut and defined tutorial for individuals like me looking for a general understanding on how to not only draft a basic sleeve pattern, but how to use my existing knowledge and "play" with the pattern to perfect my technique. i've only really attempted a "formal" sleeve block pattern once and it took so long that I still hv the bodice piece waiting to be finished off in my sewing room to this day! with this tutorial, i can really try and master drafting a block pattern first, and then transferring to muslin and work from there to use on my bodice. i've learned many a sewing technique by trial and error and it has been really the only way i'm able to retain anything anyway. but, complicated or hard to follow tutorials just make it more aggravating. MANY THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO TUTORIAL! can't wait to try it out :)
Dear Kim, Thank you so much for explaining These drawing and sewing techniques. I am a beginner and didn't know where to start. You helped me a great deal. Your explaination is so good and clear. Thank you for your time and effort. Anna
Hi greetings from🇹🇹. I just met you and I am so happy that I have. I started sewing a few months ago but I will only make loose and sleeveless tops and dresses cause I didn't know how to created patterns and I have viewed many other RUclips tutorials on how to BUT I NEVER GOT IT! Until now so thank you so much I also just reviewed your bodice pattern so Am gonna buy me some paper and start making patterns. Thanks to you my clothes will now have sleeves and fit properly....Thanks
You are magical! I honestly thought I would mess up or something because I've never done this in my life. I finally didn't mess up on something for once. Thank you 🙂
You are one of the best RUclipsrs. Seriously, your tutorials are easy to understand and you always give necessary backgroundknowledge and drop useful tips at the right time. You're very skilled, thank you for your videos.
Thank you! This was easy to follow, I have created my own pattern with my own measurements straight away. It is surprising that some of it is in inches and some in cm but it didn’t not cause any problems. Your video is clear and easy to recreate- thank you very much. 👍
You have just conquered my years of running away from sewing with this video, I wish I met you a long long time ago. Thank you so much for this awesome tutorial.
Hey there, since yours is the latest comment i found here, can you explain to me the logic behind the "16cm line" which she later changed to "13cm line" to adjust the curve. I would like to know that in case i need to adjust that line according to my body. Thanks in advance!!
Holy moly, this is a fantastic video! You didn't waste a second of time in your explanations and the visuals are so clear, I don't know how to thank you enough 😭
I jmdrafted my sleeve while watching and took notes. I love this video and about to watch other drafts. I'm new to clthes but not quilting and about to make a lot of clothes. Thanks a bunch
Thank you so much for your clear and easy instructions on how to draft a sleeve pattern. I liked that you explained step by step what to do and had the instructions inserted on the screen. I was able to write down your instructions into 18 steps. Please continue to post good instructional videos like this.😊
This is the best sleeve pattern drafting I have ever seen. Thanks a lot. Please can you do T-shirts pattern drafting I seriously need it. I just want to make myself a shirt but I haven't seen an easy and understandable tutorial like yours. Please consider making a male t-shirt pattern drafting. Thanks in anticipation.
Very helpful tutorial! I am currently working on a sleeve block for a kameez. I have traced our your guidelines and it’s looking like a sleeve! I’m very excited. I just need to see how close these lines match up to the bodice I drafted and see what changes I need to make. I was so intimidated on making a sleeve and you made it so easy! Thank you!
Wow I’ve been watching so many sleeve pattern videos and all of them either trace an already made sleeve or talk way too fast without much detail. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this incredibly detailed video!!!
I personally want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. This video helped me out so much. I hope you make it big real soon! Such amazing beautiful black teacher you are......Your video's are so easy to follow. Just amazing!
you are really perticular about measurements , drafting and everything i just love you...thank you so much for making videos & sharing your knowledge !!!
I just love listening to your voice, but that you also gave flawless instructions on making a simple sleeve. I was doing it all wrong And now I know why my sleeve always were all funky.
You made it believably simple. I am just beginning to informally study pattern making for my own sewing. I am so glad I found you and your site! Thanks for being her for us dummy wannabees!
Thank you for such a detailed explanation! Super precise and straight to the point! Makes it easy to understand for someone who really knows nothing about creating patterns! I look forward to trying my own! thank you again!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, it's my first time making a top and I have been struggling with the sleeves so this really helped me, I hope you have a wonderful day 😊

Thank you so much for this thorough and precise tutorial, I have been looking for one that isn't some version of "just wing it lol" and yours made things way clearer!
Seeeee I should have come here first 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 deffffffffffffffffffffffffffly messed up a top I was making but you’ve helped me correct that and now to find a bodice pattern 😢 I’m grateful for your video and your help!
Very well explained, Priscilla. You were so thorough that the only question left is will this work for both knit and woven fabrics? I'm off to see what other videos you have. Thank you for this one!
Omg! Thank you Kim! I'm a teen learning how to sew and I just subscribed to your channel! This is amazing. I was about to give up on RUclips tutorial videos and enroll to an actual course online or at a school. But I found your channel! You just saved me some quids!
I don’t think anyone could teach me sewing but you! So thorough and informative. Please do one for high waist leggings and a circle cape top please! I feel comfortable tackling my designs watching your videos, I appreciate you!
Thank you so much for that kind feedback. I will try to work with stretchy fabrics more in the New Year. I will keep your requests in mind for the future
A really great instruction video. Maybe explain a little more about back and front curve dimensions for the bust line and back of shoulder blade/arm pit/shoulder and ways to work with a measuring bust as a way to aid accurate measuring/pattern cutting. For anyone who cannot afford a bust (this can be quite expensive), you can wrap yourself in cellophane (no joke!), then put duct tape all around the cellophane, then have your friend cut a line up the back, then seal the two sections at the back together again and then fill the cellophane and duct tape with stuffing (or something similar). This obviously produces a bust which is a very accurate for your body’s size/shape!
I am sure you are from Freetown Sierraleone, I lived 13 years there i learnt so much from them. You sound like them . I love Sierra Leone ,both of my children born there ! I am proud of it. You have explained so clearly. Thank you sis.
I've been sewing for ages but only recently really dared to draft my own patterns.Thank you SO much for your tutorials. They are honestly so amazing and easy to follow!
this is probably the best video on youtube on how to make a sleeve pattern! thanks so much I really needed these kind of detailed information!!! will definitely refer this vid to all my sewing friends!! love it
Thank you so much for making this video! I've been searching all over for something that shows how to make a sleeve completely from scratch. Your video was perfect
You are so underrated. You literally have the most amazing videos ever. I always come to your channel for guidance when I am struggling and always leave feeling like I have grasped the concept.
Hi KimDave! I did your tutorial but then realized there was some issues. It may be me, but after going through my pattern making notes...: 1) The sleeve cap is NOT the same as the under arm depth. 8" is way too long. Instead, we should measure the sleeve cap. It usually ranges from 5" to 6" for size 6 to 12+ 2) Bicep line width is way too small. There is another calculation to get the actual bicep width, which involved measuring the front & back of your pattern armhole, adding them together, and dividing them by 2 +1/4" inches. Then you find the middle pt. between bicep width and that new calculation. My pattern making book explains it better! Other than that this tutorial was awesome in making me understand the basic sleeve concepts!
Thank you very much, although English is not my mother toungh, but you made it very clear, and I used to see it very complex to make, but you made it much easier
You make everything look so simple I love watching your tutorials I struggle so much with bought patterns so draughting my own pattern would be the answer but I lack trust in my ability even though I love to sew.
I understand what you mean Irene. I used to be afraid of pattern making when I was in Uni. But one of the ways that helps is practice, even if you don't get it right at first. The more you practice and make patterns, make mistakes and learn from them, the better you will become. Books and short courses also help a great deal
Thank you so much for this tutorial... same here, I always been hesitant to make one for myself but will definitely push myself and make one and see how it comes out. You were clear and very detailed on your tutorial. Kuddos and good job!
Yippee I finally got it right I had to watch your basic bodice pattern video so many times than I came here 😄😍😍😍😄😄! Now I can make this gorgeous long sleeve dress ! Thank you for all of your help 😊😊😊😊
My aunt is an ex premiere for St Laurent and Givenchy and she is quite impressed by the quality of your work. If you are as good at other techniques as you are with this one, you should definitely apply for a seamstress job at a fashion house. This is couture level right here.
Thanks for the tutorial found it really helpful might I suggest you use a different colour pen for marker points to make them more visible Keep up the good work Derek M
I am with @tinawalker I am new and want to start my own patterns and it’s been important for me to know the degrees of the curve or what metrics create the desired look and this is exactly what I needed. A great visual a lot better than simply tracing a garment for the pattern. I like to know WHY I am doing what I am doing and this was perfect thank you 🙏🏾
You were at 199k when I hit subscribe. Yay for being # 200k :-) Thanks for this. You are one of the few folks showing how to make things without tracing old clothes. Truly appreciated!
HI!! First of all, THANK YOU for making so many great videos. Your jumpsuit video actually inspired me to make my first ever pattern from scratch. The finished product turned out great and now I’m all about making my own patterns. :-). I have two questions for your sleeve video: 1) When you take your measurements (arm length, distance to bicep etc.) is your arm parallel or perpendicular to the ground? 2) Have you found that you make adjustments to ensure that you can lift your arm all the way up? Thank you! I’m so excited to start putting sleeves on everything!!
I just found your channel and I'm sooo excited. In Nigeria, making any garment means drafting your own patterns from scratch so channels like yours are extremely helpful. To think I learnt from three different paid tailors to learn to sew (make patterns and stitch) and I still can't get a basic sleeve perfectly right (ironically though I can do the puff and some other forms quite well). I'm just wondering though, are drafted patterns re usable?
Yes they are reusable. You can change the styles, length or feature for another garment. I keep all my patterns. Having blocks, bodice, skirt, sleeve and trouser is also very important.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. They have helped me so much as a beginner to sewing. I wanted to request a video on how to actually sew a bodice with sleeves for a dress... I have made the bodice pattern and sleeves but I am very nervous on putting them together. Thank you once again.
I am so jazzed! Ready to get started. Where do I get the Set Ruler and French Curve I see you using in the first 2 videos? Super Thank You in Advance for answering my question!
I LOVE IT!!! I MADE MY OWN SLEEVE! SERIOUSLY, I’M THE HAPPIEST HUMAN BEING IN THE PLANET RIGHT NOW. Thank you so much Kim Dave!😘😘
🎉🎉🎉 that’s awesome J K 💃🏿 Congratulations on making your own custom sleeve. Hope you have fun creating cool designs with it
OMG SAME HERE THIS VIDEO IS LITTRALLY SOOOOO HELPFUL 😭😭
Pls ma my own sleeve doesn't complete my armhole circumference... Pls teach me how to cut the sleeve with the armhole circumference

Hello Kim, can you show us how to draw a sleeve using a (bodice) armhole as the foundation for the sleeve pattern?
It is always practical to visit various pattern-making RUclips sites.
Thanks you help me a lot .keepup the good work
This was pretty easy to follow; however, you didn’t add any for easing to the bicep or elbow. I’m concerned that this sleeve will be too tight.

Hello...thanks again for this beautiful tutorial. Pls is the 8 inches for the bicep fixed or is there a calculation for it

Excellent video. Easy to understand and follow. I would love to see you do a video on how to pattern check your pattern to your body measurements.
Hi KimDave!
I did your tutorial but then realized there was some issues. It may be me, but after going through my pattern making notes...:
1) The sleeve cap is NOT the same as the under arm depth. 8" is way too long. Instead, we should measure the sleeve cap. It usually ranges from 5" to 6" for size 6 to 12+
2) Bicep line width is way too small.

AMAZING!!! I’ve been struggling and this makes SO MUCH SENSE. You’re the best 🤍
This is so clear and easy to follow! And I am so glad that these are centimeters, because it's a struggle for me to follow inches:( thank you so much!
you and i are the same. my head spins when measurements are in inches
Is it possible Priscilla to use different colors for the lines you are introducing when bending the seams thanks.
I will keep this mind for my next tutorial

I sew and I’m 12 your Channel is amazing I needed this for a Chanel skirt suit for the satin shirt
Wow! So easy! I saw many videos on RUclips but most left me confused. Thank you for the tutorial! Regards from Greece 🇬🇷
Kim Dave you are wonderful, thank you so much! These words are not enough to express how much I appreciate you ❤️❤️
I was able to make a costume from a video game that I grew up with, with this tutorial! :D THANK YOU!
Kim Dave thanks again. Really appreciate your response
Wow!!!!! Thank you....I saw many tutorials but your video was the best.
I think so too. She explains it so well!
Bravo, excellent tutorial, this is simple and clear. I have subscribed, you do a fabulous job explaining patternmaking
