  • U.S. Marine Corps recruits go through various water survival exercises at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. As a part of the swim qualification, recruits learn to quickly shed heavy equipment that could pull them underwater, safely leap into deep water, use issued equipment to stay afloat and keep their heads above water while wearing a full utility uniform.

Somewhere, there is a Swim Instructor who is thinking about a Dark Green recruit who never swam before in his life. Plt 3038 in 1983. He took forever to jump into pool. Once in, the recruit held on to the side of pool forever, deathly afraid to let go. After about 15-20 of threatening the recruit, he let go. Swam on his back half the length and proceeded to go under. All the recruit heard was the Swim Instructor shouting "Relax, Relax, Relax" He did and found his way to side of pool. That recruit was me, and I thank him. I went on to Helo-Cast into open ocean as 1st Tm Ldr, STA Plt 2/3.

Some of it is income based and access. Not many places in the inner cities have pools. That's why opening fire hydrants in the summer was so popular in low income areas. Swim lessons also cost money. While we might not think it's a lot, to a family struggling to put food on the table it's a luxury they can't afford. More places need to offer income based lessons so everyone have the opportunity to learn.

I was a good awful recruit in boot camp. To be honest probably the worst in my company. That being said because I was on swim team sophomore year I was able to swim circles around all the other recruits but one some surfer from Guam. Most marines can't swim all that well. They are mostly working class kids who learned to swim at the YMCA as a kid and then occasionally visited the local pool during the summer. They wouldn't do laps or anything. I don't think any of them were on swim team. The black people couldn't swim a lick.

I know it’s outta place here, forgive me, but please read with an open mind, you’ll be blessed
The gospel, the good news is salvation from hell. And here’s how to get it, the Bible makes it as clear as can be. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved”, acts 16:31. Words from your mouth don’t even need to be accompanied, just “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” from hell, it’s this easy!!
If you don’t believe it’s this easy, read Matthew 11:30 KJV and see for yourself
