Well, gave it a go an hour ago. Worked great. Thanks Dave. What I would say is that this is a good solution if the lock recess strip is a good 10mm out. If its only 5mm or so, its probably best to adjust hinges. You can confirm this by opening door, put in locked position, and mark where the inside of the lock 'hook' sits relative to the recess its meant to go in. If its only slightly out, moving the strip will mean the new holes you make with the screws will be too close to the old ones which could cause a real mess. The other thing to note is that whilst its fine to use a power bit, stop before the screw is fully in, and finish with a screwdriver to avoid stripping the frame with the screws. Some minor adjustment of hinges may be required to get it just right (mine did), plus the usual adjustments on the strip so the door shuts snug without rattles. Hope that helps someone.
Great stuff. It's new years day and my door handle wouldn't even lift this time. Decided to give it a go and it worked. U saved me at least 200 quid calling someone out. Thank you sir
Thank you so much! We’ve had a real problem locking the back door, it got so bad my wife couldn’t lock it at all. Half an hour after seeing your video it’s fixed! Brilliant.
Given the piles of garbage on the internet this fortunately was solid gold advice. My door was doing exactly what yours was and then it refused to lock at midnight. Nothing would make it lock. Did what you said dropped it down a few mm and bingo it’s working right for the first time. Thanks for taking the time to help us lot out…
Trawled so many you tube videos before I found this one. This worked although I had three panels to unscrew and I had to lube the little side to side adjusting cogs?so they could move freely. The door now works better than it's ever done. Thanks so much. I've cancelled the locksmith!
This has been a life saver, going on holiday tomorrow got my 18 year old niece staying to watch the dog and the back door decides its not locking.done this at one in morning and good as new. Thankyou
Hi Dave. Can't thank you enough. We were having some trouble with the locking system. You saved us a lot of trouble and money. Keep up the good work. Blessings.
Dave, thank you so much! Another one here with exactly this problem and followed your instructions (moved the latch plate 4mm up) angled the screws away from the old holes and voila! Can’t believe it worked XD Your locksmith mates are going to hate you for doing them out of easy cash 😉😄
Daughter has just moved house and has just this issue. Is it just trial and error in deciding whether it needs moving up or down ? Hers is literally a couple of mil out I guess as its 90% engaged then you need some elbow grease. I’m terms of all the screws with such a minor adjustment how do you go about finding a fresh place to screw into or that the plate doesn’t slip into the old screw holes ? Thanks
Got as far as removing the strip but couldn’t drive the screws into new positions. Is this because my little Bosch cordless screwdriver is not powerful enough or do I need to. Pre drill holes before driving? To be honest in the video it looks as if you are driving screws back into the original holes .
Worked brilliantly for me. To get the best position for the moved plate I put a piece of masking tape on the doorjamb and marked the positions of all the levers locked/unlocked and then split the difference, old plate was set about 10mm too low.
Question: Before I do this and potentially mess it up. Won't drilling in the screw again cause issues, especially if the screw holes are near the original ones? ? I mean hat exactly are the screws screwed into in the first place?
Dave this is brilliant & seems so simple but will it work the same (as in, is it the same problem/issue) if I can lift the handle & the bolt shoots but I then can’t turn the key to lock it?! When the door is open the handle lifts to the same position & I can fully turn the key to the lock position but as soon as the door is closed, the key won’t turn enough to lock 🤷🏻♀️ Any tips gratefully received!!
You need to open door, pull handles up, then close the door to and mark on the frame with a pencil the location of the door lock, open door and then adjust the frame locking mechanism to be within those lines 👍🏼
Had the same problem but my strips can't be adjusted like yours but by simply loosening the strip in the frame AND in the door, allowed enough movement for the locks to engage again. Tightened up all the screws and locks working great. Thanks for taking the time to show this because it gave me the confidence to try myself.
How do you fix one where the handle won't go all the way up when the door is open ? Alignment on the frame side it's fine , on the door mechanism itself the handle doesn't quite get to the locking position even when the doors open
Thank you so much for the vid, I am sure you just saved me a £100. I am very much a DIY novice but I followed your instructions and the door is locking perfectly 👍
Worked a treat thank you! I had little plastic screw plugs behind the plate which all fell off, but with a little persuasion I was able to loosely re-attach them after a practise run. (in my case 3 screws to hold plate in position and try the lock). I lined up the handle lock and catch on the plate which automatically aligned the top and bottom hook catches. Very happy!
Finally the one with the screwdriver agreed to watch this film, and guess what? the door now closes and locks without my having to arm wrestle it every time I go out. Thanks for this.
Great video, I will be giving that a go this coming weekend. Have been quoted £90+VAT so hoping to save a few quid which after Xmas would be excellent. Thanks again
God dam thank you man. Have been trying to lock my girlfriends parents house for the last hour ffs just have to yank it up hard and lock easy, only took ten seconds of your video lol
Hi mate, my door UPVC door handle is not going all the way up, the latches line up ok though, also it fails to push the latches out when we try to lift it even if the door is open (no resistance from anything). If a manually pull a latch or two on the side of the door down the entire run of mechs come forward to the lock position, then if I pull the handle down it brings them back in, but when going up it does not push them back out into the lock position at all even with door open. Inside the handle the square floating centre that the handle bar travels through is very loose and almost spining with the slightest touch. Do you think I need to strip off the entire strip of metal, inspect the inner mech and replace it? I'm guessing its goosed. Thanks in advance for any help.
@@diydave1142 Hey Dave, sorted it matey, yep it was that spindle the top one had a piece that had snapped off. I bought a new gear case off line a Fullex one and fitted it yesterday, job went fairly smoothly, normally I f**k these sort of things up, but managed to get it all back together OK. The Robertson pure square SQ2 screws caught me out though, had to go and get a fitting for that. Nice one cheers for the vid.
Unfortunately this didn’t work for ours, had about 20 cross head screws, and 3/4 stars shaped screws, one of which was rounded off(near the main lock in the middle) so couldn’t adjust the long metal strip, as one screw was still holding it in place. I did however, manage to move both upper and lower parts freely with my hand, whilst the upper and lower sections were pulled away from the door, but the handle still wouldn’t budge. The problem seems to be by the handle area, but I’ve took the handles off, can’t see anything I can adjust there, as it’s inside the actual door. I sprayed lots of wd40 on it after putting it back together, it’s a lot better after oiling, but this only lasts a few days before the handle gets stuck again. So annoying, been quoted £60 for the local lock smiths to come out, not including any parts they may need to replace
The mechanism isnt moving in mine keys turning but nothing popping out to lock the door. What do i need to do please. Whenever I call someone out being a woman they charge me an arm and a leg.
