Did you know yasmeen was told she was ugly at school all through her childhood. It was so bad that she refused to have photos taken of herself. From age 12/13 and onwards there are no photos of her in the family photo album. No matter how your parents try to console you, bullying at school can shape you and affect your self esteem. Modelling gave her the opportunity to prove those kids wrong. Nobody is ugly and nobody should be told they are ugly.

Reached the top of the profession she pursued. Made new friends like her close buddies Nadege and Helena. She had fun with modelling but towards the end she needed her mind to be more stimulated so she studied and went to college like most of us who studied. We can relate to her.
But she was not ugly.She was beautiful.. Why would anyone call a beautiful girl like Yasmeen ugly? probably because she was not white, blue eyes and blonde hair?beauty is diverse and doesn't only come in one form..
In the 70s and 80s she experienced racism. Some kids at school focus on looks and make fun of it. It doesn't have to be with your race. It can be if you are different in some way. She was called ugly, skinny and choclate cake face. Many of us don't have an ideal school life. But the past can no longer affect us if we live in the present. Whether you call it god's intervention, fate, destiny or simply grabbing an opportunity. The years she lost of not having photos taken were made up with the years she had photos taken in her modelling career.

The brooding brunette look started to be in fashion late 80s after the blond, blue eyed ideal of the mid 80s. That's why I love the early 90s. Runways were so diverse, I liked all the models. Designers embraced them all too.

Yasmeen would read 10 books a month, she was a backgammon expert and would play with Karen Mulder and Carla Bruni. She was never about courting publicity and the media to be relevant or get attention. She valued her privacy, she loved modelling and treated it as a job not a lifestyle.

Yasmeen was discovered, aged 17, while working in her local McDonalds. It was Edward Zaccharia, the artistic director of Platine Coiffure, who spotted her. Despite her parents' disapproval, Ghauri actively pursued a modeling career, in order to pursue a career as a model Yasmeen first moved to Milan and Paris before settling in New York in 1990.
She was on the frontline of the models who brought a radical change in the white dominant fashion industry as she was a brown woman who actually made it big leaving a great legacy behind!

It's really cool that thanks to social media and modern platforms like RUclips, we get to learn about people like Yasmeen.
She was a top model, but wasn't commercially famous to the public like Naomi or Cindy. But now this whole other generation gets to discover the mystique of this woman. Fantastic.

I walked with her in the 90s and i can assure you that in the real circle of haute couture and in the entire modelling industry, everybody knew that she was better than the famous ones. The difference between them and her is that she never compromised her principles and this is why she quit 2o minutes before her last runway because she had a fight with the house as he said something very racist and she wouldn't walk for a racist.
She decided right there and then that she was done with this industry.
That's why she was never made as popular as the other supermodels who had no principles.
But make no mistake, everybody knew she was the best of them all.
And she had the kindness of the greatest. Absolutely wonderful personality.

Also some other interesting fact. Designers would put Yasmeen in the most expensive outfits and dresses cause they found their clients would choose what yasmeen wore. She was the most used model in the 90s for couture too. Add to that on Europe mtv style TV show in the mid 90s...there was an episode where she was voted best catwalker by the other models. So Yasmeen is considered the greatest in the industry.

Actually those were the days were there was very little diversity.
Yasmeen was one of the first to inspire diversity in the modelling industry.
It is way more diverse now, compared to how it was before.
She reminds me of this quote by a famous Mexican actress, it says " it's not enough to be beautiful, you have know how to be." She's got so much presence, she commands the room she enters

Lagerfeld said that because she had a long upper body but very long legs and double jointed hips, she could walk like no other models every could, which made her the best walker of all time.
She also had the proportions of a sketchbook model so every clothes looked on her like they looked on the sketch.
What's interesting is that she is in TOTAL CONTROL of her body. No wasted movements, nothing overly dramatic. Just light as a feather, and fierce as hell.
Now THAT'S a girl that can walk. You don't see anyone work a runway like that these days.

Sorry to say that in the last few decades the grace, class and style of models like her and Imam has fallen out of fashion. Same in Hollywood. Last few generations got Paris Hilton and the Kardashians,and while there are some good models out there, they certainly aren’t iconic or even super anymore.

I though Naomi, Gisele and Natasha Poly was the best catwalkers on runway until... I found Yasmeen Ghauri, now my world is suddenly changing. She is like that mythical creature or legendary pokemon, unknown to public eyes but once you know that she is exist, your world is never be the same. She is so effortlessly graceful and fierce at same time.
Yasmeen is definitely one of the greatest catwalkers of all time. I have another great catwalker for you. Look up Anna Bayle. Trust me, you won't regret it.

She really is so unique! A true skinny hourglass figure with wide majestic shoulders that give her an amazonian look. Her walk is elegant, breezy, sexy and refined. Look at the way she twists her back foot to create a greater hip swing. Even her hands are shaped elegantly all the time. I love that it’s obvious the designers saved the most beautiful or notable of their collection for her. She’s always wearing the every best outfit of the collection in almost every runway I’ve seen.

Phenomenal video!!! I'm in my mid 40s but I was a teenager when Yasmeen was in her heyday during the supermodel era. She was so unique and statuesque. She not only had a tiny waist but also BROAD SHOULDERS, which is rare for a woman to have. A one of a kind body. She could wear anything. And yes, she was definitely the best runway walker ever.

I have always loved her "look." That's something models today just don't have. They all look the same. Models in the 90s were all beautiful in their own way, which was such a wonderful thing to grow up with.

@@mrchu5533ofc she has insanely good features, but sending young girls model agencies is the reason why these models become big on the runway, they teach them everything and fix whatever flaw they have. Don't over obsess it, there's a reason why they were called working models. It's not as simple as it looks.

I have the same body type as her, I’m very thin with broad shoulders wider than my hips which makes my body look more masculine. I don’t like my shoulders and wished I looked more feminine. But seeing her pull it off with confidence makes me feel less insecure and proud of myself xD that’s why I love her😊

I met her in the very early 90s on several occasion when i modeled. We became good friends and would sometimes hang out together in Europe and Asia, i especially introduced her to the gay scene of the 90s in Tokyo which was quite something !
I remember once in the hotel room we were getting ready to go out for dinner (yes she ate like a regular person and didn't put on weight, as she said she used to work at mcdonals and would eat fries and ice cream every day on her break), and i put my hands around her waist and my fingers touched. I may be a tall guy with big hands but that was still really impressive.
