I have the pro plus and it is by far my favorite modern controller. The difference in feel is entirely due to the stick cap (the part you touch). It's pretty easy to swap in xbox or playstation sticks if you want.
Yes totally agree. I got mine yesterday and the sticks are very nice with comfortable texture feel! (I own dualshock 4 and tried DualSense and Xbox series gamepad earlier)
I think he just meant that he is accustomed to the stick location at the top left and the dpad below it. The playstation has the sticks across from each other.
The SN30 Pro+ (basically the predecessor of this controller) does have a removable battery and battery cover. It also, I’m pretty sure, have analog triggers.
The extra buttons are a huge advantage for the emulators, because you can set them to emulator (not the game) features such as save/load, rewind/fast forward, and the emulator menu to change the game.
Yes, sorry for that. Back then I thought they're like on Steam Controller, but when I configured them, the best I could do is to map them to "Home" and then map home to some feature in emulator.@@xthedronx

My SN30pro+ is turning 2 years old in a few months. I had to replace the ABXY membrane after around 2000hrs of heavy usage. Yes, it's the only controller you need.
I absolutely LOVE my SN30PRO+ !!!! It's my absolute favorite controller. It's so comfortable, ergonomic, and the buttons and triggers and sticks feel SOOOO good. I would like to get the Pro2 but since my Pro+ works so.well already, and there isn't THAT much difference as far as I can tell, I'm not in a rush.
This thing looks sweet! Thank you very much for showing these. I've been very curious about the 8BitDo controllers but they are expensive so I didn't want to pull the trigger on purchasing without a quality review like this. Thank you!
8bitdo is amazing, I have the "old" one and I'm thinking about ordering the pro2. Then if Anthony is talking about it that is gonna be the official unboxing that is gonna create my decision
I too have the pro+, but do not feel the need to upgrade at all. Though the pro2 definitely is an upgrade, and a more mature version of the pro+, the pro+ has been working really well as a general purpose controller for me (both retro and modern games), on my Linux machines.
I've had the Pro2 for a few months now; basically since 8bitDo released it, and it's been a great controller. Runs forever on charge, runs while plugged in, configurable button layout, has some heft to it(probably all that battery) and takes my shoving the sticks around with no issues.
I bought the Pro+ in November and I'm using the controller ever since on an almost daily basis. I don't have much experience with gamepads, but I really like this one. It doesn't have the highest of qualities (e.g. dead skin can get trapped in many gaps and the phone stand doesn't really work for me), but I've really liked everything else (for example the battery that gets low only after 20hrs of use). I don't feel the need to upgrade to the Pro2, but I think that everyone who buys it will make a very good purchase. Btw you can even ask 8BitDo to send you replacement parts if something gets broken. I've asked them a left stick yesterday because the one I already have gets scratched under the cap and they told me they'd send me one for free.
@@WyvernDotRed it's worth the upgrade. The Pro2 is a lot more comfortable, as it has a nice texture for grip. The slick feel is my biggest problem with the Pro+.
@@Droogie128 I am aware of those improvements, but I personally have no issues with my Pro+'s smooth grips. If I were to get a new controller, it would be a Pro2, but as I don't mind the lesser parts of the Pro+, why should I?
I've owned the 8BitDo SN30pro+ (Not the 2, mine is missing extra back buttons) for some 6-8 months and it is my favorite controller ever. I grew up literally cutting my teeth on the super Nintendo controller and always thought that Play Station nailed it early with the iconic design they aren't ever going to need to really change. So those combined like this is my dream controller. The only negative I've run into so far is the coating on the joysticks tore a tiny tiny bit in one spot. But only that speck sized piece came off and if I didn't tell anyone they wouldn't ever notice. Bluetooth works great, battery lasts forever. This is one of those products that doesn't need advertising because people will promote it between each other by word of mouth. Also the D-Pad is perfect. This controller made me better at Hollow Knight. No Joke.
If the turbo on that is like the Turbo on my SN30 Pro, you hold down the turbo button and then press the button you want to be turbo. Then when you press that button it's turboed until you do it again. There was also an autofire setting, same situation but after you did it the button would basically act as if you were holding it down turbo until you turned it off. I like that implementation and I like the give you two buttons on the back you could use to set that up, if you want.
That is also environmentally friendly. I don't understand why can't you see it? It is very tough to get such niche controllers parts, specially the batteries and basically if rechargeable built in battery dies, the WHOLE CONTROLLER becomes junk. With this, if for some reason battery dies and can't be used anymore, you can just get rechargeable AA batteries and keep on going. It is COOL.
You and the guy who does the camera reviews really make me smile when watching reviews. Candid, truthful, not trying to be a comedian like the founder. Cheers and greater successes to ShortCircuit.
ive used an SN30 Pro+ for games like Monster Hunter World AND for Retroarch. the only complaints i ever had is that switching modes is confusing. i have to go through all of them to see which one works. and the rubber on the joysticks wore out pretty fast being in my backpack. i might get this new one because it now has a physical switch for it. Honestly its the best controller for the price.
I don't get why either configuration actually matters. I think anybody can use either style and get used to it. There's no objectively better stick layout.
@@Crlarl I have large hands so my thumbs touch on most symmetrical controller layouts meaning I can't do full inwards inputs on both sticks unless there is spacing at least 0.5-1" more than what playstation dualshocks have had in the past.

I got the wired version, it's so great! It's like a old school PS1 controller with a SNES dpad. I tried it out on Streets of Rage 4, it feels very first party. From a retro gamer, it gets my approval. This will be my controller for launchbox, for all my retro console games.
Interesting comment from someone with an apple watch. They are made with forced labor and rely on the mining of precious metals which has an enormous and negative environmental impact. All for a device that isn't repairable and will be obsolete in 24 months. His comment is typical performative nonsense.
Yeah, I've had mine for a couple of months now. Just got another one yesterday! My new favourite control, especially because I can just use it effortlessy between my PC and my Switch. Highly recommend.
Hey, I'm thinking of getting one although I really don't play retro games. Is it fine with modern games like, say, third person action games like God of War or Assassin's Creed? How about the d-pad for fighting games (just in case you have some experience)? How about FPS? I'm mainly a PC gamer and is looking for a replacement to my now-broken Xbox One controller.
5 months late but he said that he uses an iphone on a daily basis because he don't want to spends too much time with a (android) phone. Funny how you bought a device because you don't want to use it. I guess call and text is enough anyway
I'd love the twitchy yet deep travel of the ps3 controllers on a retro controller. I may be alone in this, but I actually prefer them to the current industry standard (which is what was on the 360 and is still used to this day on every oem console controller).
@@lucascaellum No, I was actually talking about the joy/analog sticks. The deep travel and minute actuation of the PS3 sticks were great. Hard to master, since instincts will make you overshoot, but if you can master it, it's butter smooth compared to any joy/analog sticks today.

Grabbed my 8bitdo Pro today in the PS1 style for playing on PC w game pass and I’m truly in love. I’m coming from a ps4 controller and it feels incredibly similar but somehow more comfortable. I think the claim that it’s for retro games is just projecting because that’s what he sees in it. I played Star Wars Jedi order and forza for some hours today and had a blast. This controller is definitely on par for any kind of gaming. The back buttons are a plus as well. I’d say if you’ve been thinking about it just get it you’ll probably love it. I grew up on PlayStations since ps1 and this feels right at home.
I absolutely prefer my 8bitdo pro 2 over my xbone/PS4 controller for basically every game. The controller is just so comfortable to me, and being able to use it on my Android tv, PC, and switch without having to re-pair between the three is so valuable to me. Also, please don't use the Switch mode on a PC, the triggers are only digital and not analog in that mode.
I use switch mode to use the gyro control on PC witch for shooters' (that don't usally benfit from analog triggers anyway... infact other then driving when do your really use them) It is a shame there is no Playstation controller mode for steam thou... be nice to be able to use the triggers and gyro at the same time like the Playstation controller can.

Real question is if the pro 2's joysticks last longer than 9-12 months of light use before they start drifting/lose sensitivity when pushing forward. Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo all use that same exact, cheap joystick potentiometers.
@@JakeobE IIRC the 8BitDo's use the same modules, but as the controller is built in an old-school way, it's relatively easy to open it and solder in new ones.

Anthony your reviews are always my jam. I'm sold since official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers are on average $25 to $40 more than 8BitDo pro controllers AND David at PCWorld gave a similar review.

i absolutely love this controller. the d-pad, the feel, the button shapes - all of it just feels so right. Plus the removable battery that supports AA's. It's replaced my dual shock 4's and xbox controllers. And yes, it does feel like a PS1 DS + SNES controller. That's probably why i like how it feels.
Bought this controller thanks to this review among many others on youtube. It works great and the battery life is good. My only gripe are the r1 and l1 buttons. They feel kinda loose after like 2 months of owning it. I haven't owned a controller in years, so this might be a normal thing, but for me it was quite noticeable and had me worried. I think its just something that happens with time. But I'll update y'all if it ever becomes an issue.
Anthony.. Sally Le Page has a video called "Is all plastic inherently evil?" which has an interesting twist on the environmental friendly discussion of paper vs. plastic. I think you might find it interesting.
I think because steam goes out of their way to have controller supported they put their logo on there, unlike the operating system itself which may not as ive found out with my switch pro controller i got for PC gaming. Steam games work no problem, xbox on windows dont without some hassel and even then no gaurantees its working properly.
I currently use the SN30 Pro 8BitDo controller with a 3D Printed Grip, which replaced the N30 Pro, that replaced the NES30. When I first saw this video's thumbnail I was like "Is this one going to be better than my Xbox One S BT controller? I have one of these. I like it a lot. Great for emulation, but I would rather use an xbox controller for playing modern pc games. That's why I have both!
It's really a shame the Xbox controller doesn't support gyro/have back paddles. It is one of the most ergonomic controllers, but I hate the feeling of aim assist. Gyroscope is the best bet for the console/controller industry to move past it, and it feels so responsive. Comparable to K&M when set well.

When did he complain about the plastic? Isn't that standard even amonst flagship controllers? As far as I know the X-Series and PS5 controllers are not made of metal...
I love my 8bitdo Pro (non plus controller) if I was gonna use a bigger controller I'd use my Playstation or Xbox controller. The 8Bitdo feels perfect for sidescrollers and action games, retro or not. I'm 35 and originally started with an SNES and my cousins Sega Genesis as a kid and in my opinion the dpad on my 8bitdo is excellent. I don't feel any misses or slow response. The right thumbstick is harder to control as Anthony pointed out in the software. The range isn't perfect but as long as I'm not playing a shooter which I've tried, I'm happy with it.

yeah, shame only one company remaining to make them. If Alps goes out of business or decides to stop servicing the gaming industry, things'll suck.
How is it holding up, did you have any issues in this time?
The SN30 Pro+ (basically the predecessor of this controller) does have a removable battery and battery cover. It also, I’m pretty sure, have analog triggers.

With 8bitdo or Xbox no problems
The extra buttons are a huge advantage for the emulators, because you can set them to emulator (not the game) features such as save/load, rewind/fast forward, and the emulator menu to change the game.
Not to mention, a simple underhand paddle-pull can trigger the Hadouken!!
Yes, sorry for that. Back then I thought they're like on Steam Controller, but when I configured them, the best I could do is to map them to "Home" and then map home to some feature in emulator.@@xthedronx

Also the controller looks rad. I can't get used to both sticks being so out of the way on dualshocks, they're the part I use the most and should be right under where my thumb naturally rests.
I picked up 2 when they first came out. Can confirm they're spicy af. They hit the perfect mulitplayer sweet spot of being good enough quality for people to enjoy using, without costing hundreds like multiple switch pro controllers would

Pretty much no third party controllers can wake the Switch only the official pro controller.
The licensed wireless gamecube controller can wake up the switch.

You know Anthony has an analytical mind when he sees 3 dots for the profiles and immediately calculates the number of possible combinations in binary.
But 2^3 = 8, so I don't know how he got 6.
Am an engineer, do not consider this a meaningful indicator of an analytical mind.
Wouldn’t that be trinary?

My SN30pro+ is turning 2 years old in a few months. I had to replace the ABXY membrane after around 2000hrs of heavy usage. Yes, it's the only controller you need.
Was so looking at this controller yesterday, and as always sleep on purchasing decisions, now you made my mind up, great job Anthony ...
Thank you!
@@M4r10h how is the stick drift?
Expensive?
He looks like the big brother that you can hug anytime you feel down...😁
8bitdo is amazing, I have the "old" one and I'm thinking about ordering the pro2.
No Joke.
Correct use of literally gives a nice mental image of you as a baby gnawing on the SNES controller. Thanks for that.

Anthony: Use cardboard instead of plastic. Be environmentally friendly!

Yeah, I think his point there was that the battery's removable. It doesn't turn into a landfill brick when the battery goes bad.
It is COOL.

ive used an SN30 Pro+ for games like Monster Hunter World AND for Retroarch. the only complaints i ever had is that switching modes is confusing. i have to go through all of them to see which one works. and the rubber on the joysticks wore out pretty fast being in my backpack. i might get this new one because it now has a physical switch for it. Honestly its the best controller for the price.
