Some people are dog people, and some are cat people. When it comes to seafarers and the Navy, they are most definitely cat people. So much so that cats are time-honored passengers aboard ships of all types, and their habit of sailing alongside humans can be dated back to antiquity.
The day-to-day life of a ship's cat doesn’t vary very much from one on land. They wake up, stretch and go about their business much like a cat on land, deciding when and where they will decide to notice the humans around them, or not.
And so starts the legend of Unsinkable Sam. An ordinary cat who defied extraordinary odds at sea to live a long and healthy life.

1 Random Crit Torpido did Sunk it to Gaint German Ship. XD
The main reason cats were initially put on ships was as rodent control. Over time, sailors began to enjoy their company.
Like how the British would put Cobras in plantations
Cats > Dogs tbh.
Go Noles
@@Based_Gigachad_001Better to have both, my dog will protect and keep my cat safe from wild animals if outside together but my cat is an inside cat. If you live in the country or have an outside cat then it's a really good idea to have a dog that will keep the yard and surrounding areas safe from coyotes or any other animal that would smell the dogs scent and realize they in dogs territory and will leave the area instead of searching for something to hunt like a cat, Cats will also retreat to the yard if danger is around so the dog can help protect them.

Sam is lucky to survive 3 sinking. The crew who had Sam is unlucky to have 3 sinking with him.
the cats real name is oskar
In WWI there was a British Sailor who survived three sinking ships… on the same day.
The sailor was on the HMS Aboukir when she was torpedoed by U9. He was picked up Cressy, which was also sunk, and then lastly by Hogue which was, like the previous two, were sunk
@@launcesmechanist9578😮😮😮
@@launcesmechanist9578what happend with him after?
@@natheriver8910 He continued to serve in the Royal Navy throughout WWI and then again in WWII I believe, retiring as a Commander.
Unironically, he detested submarines.
This German Cat: *(whispers in Death’s ear)* “You're not living up to the legend, Wolfie”
Honestly, Unsinkable Sam is just a cat built different
😸
Bro actually bismark sailor fought to hard sink two British battleship and damaged one air craft carrier with 22 aircraft on board
Also give a absolute tough time to British navy in its last day's
So Oscar was essentially a sailor who was captured by the Allies, never released, forced into servitude in Gibraltar and Northern Ireland and then passed away as a POW. We need compensation for Oscar, especially since Wojtek got 3 statues, multiple bottles of vodka and several packs of cigarettes for carrying artillery shells.
I mean Oscar was not really of "use" during the war like Wojtek, he just so happend to surrvive 3 sinkings, but you do have a point.
I think of the cat as a spoil of war, like all the gold and art the Nazis stole from their victims
I agree he belonged to the German crew of the Bismark. He was a POW Germany was his birthplace.
My cat heard the meows and looked around to see if there was a cat
Mine to hahaah!
Mine too
same here😂
Yall dont use dem headphones?
Same
One thing is certain when it comes to war time, you can expect a plethora of insane stories.
We had a woman who survived titanic, Britannic, and the Hawk-Olympic collision and now an unsinkable cat
some being just have some of the most bazar luck
Three boats in, I wouldn't get on another boat in my life.
There was a man who survived 3 sinkings.
Violet Jessup.
😁
Now we need a child to complete the unsinkable family
I love how this cat basically got team balanced
Competition begins in 10 seconds!😊
With how superstitious sailors are I’m surprised they took Sam on board afterwards
They aren't cruel.
@@Based_Gigachad_001 I know but sailors had a lot of superstitions and taking a cat from a ship that’s been sunk doesn’t seem like something they’d do
@@thomasmolyneaux3700 Well look at it this way, Sam was on ships that sank, but he *survived*, that's never a guarantee. In wartime sailors are fully aware that not only are they likely to be attacked but may die at sea, if not also from the natural dangers that come with sailing to begin with, the sea has ever been a cruel mistress. So knowing Sam survived sinking ships he'd be sort of a good luck charm, sailors all hoping some of that luck would rub off on them when their ship inevitably comes under fire.
@@JakeCWolfI heard that he was forcibly retired in Gibraltar because superstitious sailors suspected that he was attracting fire. Obviously there's no way of proving what really happened now.
@@JakeCWolf Good point but after 2 sinkings you think they’d not want him anymore
Tuxedo cats are good luck charms.
I had a tuxedo cat named Henry for most of my life. We got him when I was 2 and he passed away 3 days after my 18th birthday last year at the ripe age of 16
Kitty went through more than some soldiers have, truly a distinguished gentleman!
I would like to think that Unsinkable Sam had a bed ontop of one of the turrets on Bismark, and when the crew fired one of the guns it woke Sam up and launched him into a frenzy where he attacked the gunners for waking him up, you know, typical cat behavior.
Rest In Peace Sam.
Sinking Sam was on a mission to avenge the Bismarck.
I would be too that ship was a floating castle compared to the other ships.
This cat has lived more than I have over the span of three decades.
So either this cat is really lucky, or was a curse to those that sailed with him.
Got to love how animals can keep people going and in good spirits! :D Cats both being a boon to people on board a ship and also clearing it of vermin is such a nice touch.
Especially as you consider the fact that most cats hate water :D
If only the Royal Navy still allowed cats on ships. They stopped the practice around 1975. In fact most navies with the exception of the Russian navy don’t allow cats on board anymore.
Not all cats hate water, but most of them yes.
(Nice pfp)
Some people said that furries existed in ww2 which is a lie.
@@user-wd1tt2qw8d Irrelevant
@@user-wd1tt2qw8d Yeah Furries is def a more modern thing with more so to do with the internet then just animal handlers in the past. Furries themselves were not around in ww2, back then it was just crazy cat ladies.
It expanded to be what it is cause of this period of peace we have lived in, which has been threatened by current world leaders, which is unfortunate. Hopefully Biden gets out of office soon so we don't end up in a world war 3.
Unsinkable Sam’s name on board the Bismarck is unknown. He was given the name Oscar after being picked up by the HMS Cossack because Oskar or O in sailor talk means man (or in this case cat) overboard.
No he was really named Oscar by the Germans that had him I read about it a few months back.
May he rest In Peace
My dog heard the meows and it is now confused searching for the cat
Sam is just one lucky cat. Just not to the Navy boats he was on.
Pixar should do this animated movie.
i dont they will do that cause its mostly about kids not war
Would’ve been in trouble if he was on 6 more, though.
What?
@@Based_Gigachad_001Cats have 9 lives
It's either Oscar very lucky or cursed to sink all ship he on
In reality, Oscar (alias "Sam") was on a mission to avenge the Bismarck and some of it's crew, which resulted in the sinking of 2 allied ships.
10/10 for the animation in this one! The cat on the main guns when they went off, him playing with the ammo belt, the fish air drop and everything in between had me rolling 😂
One story even more remarkable was of a man who survived the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
I wonder what that cat was thinking during attacks and being taken. He must have felt so important 😂😂
i am so happy you did a story on Sam. I found out about unsinkable Sam during school and not a lot of people talk about the cat.
He had another 6 ships in him
What a good kitty
Any memorial statue of him would be petted
I hear the cat’s spirit lives on under the alias ‘Morgana’ now
This could make for a good movie, similar to War Horse where the story follows the animal.
That poor cat must of had PTSD.
Very good video about a legendary cat Simple History. Kudos as always🥳🎉
We had a couple of Foxes in our tank brigade, So we were operating in Germany to Italy and also Finland and Switzerland, Those two lived on, for until the old age of 29, those two...
I love your channel keep up the great stuff
The more I learn about people, the more I love my dog

Oscar has to be the luckiest cats to survive 3 ships during WW2! Rest in peace Oscar the "Unsinkable Sam"
I thought Unsinkable Sam was just a character in the game Divinity. Didn't know he was based on an actual cat
Poor kitty
Make a vídeo about aztec Eagles squadron 201
If the crews say he existed that’s good enough for me
That cat is a legend
Thank you for pointing out the potentially dubious nature of this cat. It's objective to hear the "other side" of the story behind this cat.
"Death can have me, when he earns me."
- Unsinkable Sam, 1945
When you posted the animals of WWII, I was asking where Unsinkable Sam was, and now he's here.
If that cat were a human, it would've developed a chain-smoking and alcoholic habit.
8:30 i love that bit of animation because i 1000% can see a cat playng with an ammo belt
its unsinkable sam!!
