Dogs of War - The Hero Canines of WW2

- There is nothing quite as special as the tight bond that can develop between humans and their canine friends. Standing by our sides through times of peril, amazing stories have often emerged of the selfless and heroic deeds performed by dogs in the hopes of keeping their humans safe. During World War II, the founder of the PDSA, Maria Dickin CBE, wanted to recognize these acts of bravery. So, in 1943, she created what is now known as the Animal’s Victoria Cross, or the Dickin Medal, to honour the animals that, in their own way, fought alongside us.

If you do a ww1 version of this you should mention Sgt stubby
32😊❤
You forgot stubby
@@BigestPackerfan that's ww1
Hey Simple History, you completely neglected Smoky’s story in WW2, she was a stray who was a fantastic dog during the war. Not to mention you’ve yet to do a story about the first dog to make the official rank of Sergeant, a one Sergeant Stubby from WW1.
I have as much respect for these best boys as I have for any soldier. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that these dogs had better souls than most people nowadays.
far more morale and value. no contest. than most
Fr
Absolutely!
@@alexnutu1125not to brag, sorry if it comes off "asshole-y", but people always tell me I'm the nicest person they know and I am 100% sure that these dogs were better than most people nowadays.
@@chrisi7127 Yes that indeed came across as extremely douchey. Do yourself a favor and never repeat that on the internet again.
We got a bomb dog about two months into our Afghanistan tour. We were told explicitly not to treat Bingo like a normal dog. This lasted approximately three hours before everyone spoiled him. Within a short time, we didn't even let Bingo leave the wire to do his job, one he did exceptionally well. We were willing to lose a Private to IEDs before Bingo. War is strange.
was it a dirtbag private at least?

Love that gander was like "IF I'M GOING DOWN I'M TAKING SOME OF THEM WITH ME"
FOR KING AND COUNTRY!!!
Sargent gander broke me, i couldn't stop crying
*sergeant
Seriously I’m actually crying right now
Fr the best boy 😢
That one really broke my heart, I almost cried.
We didn’t deserve these 4 legged heroes, they’ll never be forgotten for their services
Truly honorable for there service, should never be forgotten 😿
Seriously! We also don't deserve cats, they still play a role in wars, albeit, not as much as dogs.
@@DontReadMyProfilePicture.57OH MY GOD THESE STILL EXIST
The bond between human and canine has withstood the test of time, from the dawn of history to the present day. The fact that these two species are so different from each other and yet are inseparable is truly remarkable.
God damnit, simple history, this made my eyes water.
We truly don't deserve the immeasurable love and loyalty shown from a cared and fed doggo.
The goodest of boys and gals.
The Gander story made my eyes water up in the first time in 7 months or so. His death was so sad and heartbreaking.
Good heart Mr.Stalwart.👍😎
Likewise. I had to pause the video just to dote on my dog for a bit. Dogs are too good for humanity
yes please. Something all countries can support together. nobody can criticize the goodest of boys. What incredible stories.
except Islam, it is a hate filled culture.
Wow, as a Canadian, Gander’s story definitely made me tear up a little, we don’t deserve dogs, yet they serve us so loyally
As I watched that segment I experienced the same thing. I kept thinking that dog deserved a Medal of Honor because there are incredibly brave humans who even wouldn’t have done what he did. That dog should be honored in all the history books. Actually all the brave animals that have served should be listed and honored with the same reverence we do with their human counterparts in the history books.
The Generals in charge must have been Cat people!? Why did it take so long for this Dog to be awarded the Dicken medal
My grandfather is right behind Sgt. Gander in his most famous picture.
He was indeed, the goodest boy.
A lot of brave Canines perished in the line of duty in this way, grabbing a grenade and taking away from a group of soldiers both injured and not, extremely heartbreaking sacrifices that saved so many lives. A lot of these stories come from WW1, but only being properly recognized within the last 20+ years like a lot of Canine heroes from the first world war.
Ganders story broke me instantly, i havnt cried that hard in ages. self sacrifice always brings tears to my eyes but when a animal somehow understands what a complex man made device like a grenade is and takes it and runs into the enemy cause they lack the anatomy nessisary to throw it. that was such a brilliant dog, the fact it had to die kills me, im still pouring tears as i type this. we indeed do not deserve these wonderful creatures
I don't know why but the story about Gander brought me to slight tears. Such a good boy!
This is officially my favorite Simple History video because I am a dog 🐕 person through and through. Even during the darkest periods, these brave canines have the same endurance as their fellow human soldiers. They are the very definition of loyalty, courage, and love. Their stories will never ever be forgotten.
Sergeant stubby in ww1 is amazing he even had a special gas mask made for him
Man's best friend, even in war. There's no greater companion to for a soldier than a fluffy K9 by their side. The best boys and girls in the world!
What about horses? What about the millions of chickens we eat everyday? Aren’t farm animals can be our best friend?
Cats are better.
What the dog doing? He's creating history
@@Sigma_Male_Anti_Female has a cat ever saved someone’s life in war? Has a cat ever alerted soldiers of gas attacks? Has a cat ever dug someone out of the rubble of an air raid? Has a cat ever not scratched you constantly? Has a cat ever shown love to you? Has a cat helped your ancestors hunt giant mammoths to extinction? Has a cat ever stood up against predators to help their human?
@@Sigma_Male_Anti_Female no cat has helped someon in war, cats are evil
"we don't deserve dogs"
That right there could've been the whole video.
I think I cried seeing the part about Gander and his posthumously earned medal.
Let’s also give the WW1 canines some recognition. Please do a video about WW1 canines such as Sgt. Stubby and his other fellow four legged heroes that were in the Great War.
RIP Rags, 1912-1932 🌹🌹
I really in tears right now, these boy are really are the bestest boy. I wish there was a canine veteran hall of fame for these doggos
Ganders story made me tear up
I read the book about Judy and her experience during World War II. It's fantastic book and true story.
Wait wasn't that the dog in China who was in the Royal navy and survived on an island with its squad when its owner became a pow?
I believe Judy may have been a guardian angel in disguise.🧡🐕
@@lub8815 No disguise necessary..
The book on Judy and Fraank Williams, No Better Friend is honestly the best novel I've ever read!
Thank you. Beem looking for a new book. You rock🤘
It’s not a novel. It’s a biography. Novels are fiction.
I got mad respect to these doggos

You should make a video about mercy dogs during WW1.
Man how do you watch this and not at least tear up? We do not deserve these amazing, pure creatures and their dedication to us.
These dogs are legendary, saviors and loyal. Them following their humans into the warzone and being there for comfort, combat and rescue is incredibly brave and heartwarming.
May these Doggos rest in peace for ever more.
You should do a video about the WW1 dogs as well my favorite is Rags a former street dog adopted as a mascot for the American First Division who repeatedly carried messages to HQ and warned soldiers of incoming artillery at one point he was wounded in a simultaneous gas and artillery attack and taken to a nearby field hospital where several soldiers objected to a dog being given so much special treatment to which all the men of First Division stood up and said "Orders from headquarters." Which roughly translated means "Shut up and sit down or you're going to get your head kicked in." No messed with Rags when First Division was around.
My dog is gone since december of last year. I hope He gets to meet these brave dogs before i do so he can tell me about them.
Doggos under the command of USA and England: 😀

Dogs truly are man's best friend.
They're not my best friend
I have a Newfoundland, and I can say with confidence that when a Newfie gets on its legs, it resembles a Bear. Even if Gander was a little small for your average Newfie
This made me tear up a little. We definitely don't deserve dogs.
Dogs will always be man’s number 1 friend.
This by far is one of the most well done videos. Simple History is the best!!!!
They really are good boys.
It's good to see that these brave boys and girls set an example of how a bond between human and canine can be valuable to situations where human error could have caused loss of lives.
This is by far the only video that made me cry on this chanel. These fur babies and fur buddies go all out to do really astonishing and amazing things all to make their owners and companions happy. My heart goes out to all animals in servise and who do great things for many and all.
These are the Goodest Boys and Girls.
Dogs are the greatest things in the world.
Sometimes I think doggos are the best things humans have ever done.
Do not do dogs
don't do dogs you're gonna go to jail wtf
OML NO NO DONT DO THAT
Do NOT do dogs
Yes, we created something very special when we started breeding camp doggos in the paleolithic era.
I needed a happy cry. Thank you.
And thank you doggos. You know we don't deserve you, but you love us anyways.
The Canines heroes of any previous and current wars should be honoured any human soldier. So many perished in the line of duty helping their handlers and saving lives, I just wish way more often we would hear tell of their stories, and see them be awarded with the medals they more then deserve if they have not already. One of the things I love the most is the fact some of them were buried in war cemeteries, or other cemeteries alongside humans, with large headstones of their own to honour them and their service as we would any other human. I wish to hear more stories of canine heroes, as there are so many that deserve to be heard and remembered.
These dogs are true heros
I’m not crying… you are! 😭
Please do one on Simon the cat. He is the only cat to have ever received the dicken medal. He served on HMS Amethyst and received the medal for being wounded in combat by a shell blast.
dogs are like four legged real life super heros!
I hope a video about horses are made too, they have been with man for hundreds of years.
The forgotten soldiers.
This may be the most wholesome video I have seen in years. March Air Reserve Base here in Riverside, CA has an entire memorial to war dogs as well and we don't deserve the sacrifices they have made for us.
Horses also deserve a separate video of their own. Horses played an even bigger role before the industrial age in war.
Great video Simple History! I love your videos.
Such good boys
Wow! Great video! Some truly moving stories of these heroes!
Dogs of WW1 and WW2 are really underrated
This video brings so much tear! Cheers for all the heroes!
You got to do a part two. Smokey the
Yorkshire Terrier that was a bombardier mascot, wire layer and prompted the role of therapy dog for post war vets for the forseable future.
Thank you for making this video.
These dogs did more with their lives than i ever could
I couldn't agree more. I am a complete looser next to these heroes
0:40 Maria dickens lol
Brought a tear to my eye but in a good way. Thank you.
Something about the narrator saying doggo got me acting up😩💀💀
They didn’t stop to think they just did what they thought was right. They would do anything to protect their men. Best soldiers to ever put four paws 🐾 into battle. ♥️🙂
Thank You for such a long and enjoyable video.
Thank you for sharing, as someone who loves and appreciates the goodest doggos this was quite emotional to see them being honoured for their work.
Dogs and horses are the only animals that go to war with us and make the ultimate sacrifice. You don't ever see a cat going to war alongside its human.
Sometimes, Cats give you a disappointment face
In both world wars, cats were common both on ships and in trenches for pest control and boosting moral.
cats don't have major combat abilities and also you don't see cars mauling humans
Well, pardoning one or two odd stories in the modern day, and several more in earlier history.
There have been many cats serving in the Royal Navy with official navy IDs and everything
Sergeant gander's story brought tears
Awesome video. Very heart warming.
Great video! Do one about Sgt Reckless, a horse who served in the Korean War.
That one about the Canadian dog actually brought a tear to m6 eye. He was such a good boy.
Fierce as the MWDs are, it's nothing compared to the fury of their handlers when they've been hurt. Bless them all.
This has to be the best vid that you've made, in my opinion, that is.
We truly don't deserve dogs is an understatement. These dogs risking and sacrificing their own lives to save their human handlers lives and the lives of civilians and pets, dogs have a heart of gold. So many people and animals would not be here without them. They continue to help us in rescues to this day.
Yes I totally agree with you, they never judge us and love us unconditionally. God bless those who gave everything for us.🙏🐕
Good dog 🐶
These videos are wonderful on my morale
My two favorite things in one video. History, and Doggos.
I like a lot of your videos but this on is one that I love the most
That was awesome. Thanks!
I've been waiting for someone to cover more stories about our animal companions and I cannot be happier - and sad- to finally see a new one. Thank you so much!
I am glad you were blessed with a great voice because you are doing something great with it.
Respect and salute to these goodest boys. Man this video made me shead tears..... I have heard about Rex and Irma before but it was refreshing to know there were many more four legged Heroes out there, with a capitol H. Keep on doing Good Work, Simple History Team!
Voting in for a video on Jim Corbett, the best known hunters who faced several maneaters
Aww. Gander. Brave dog. Earned that medal.
Dogs something that truly changed us as a whole incredible loyal animals
I'm not crying, you are.
Outstanding job! I already Love dogs now i admire them even more!
There is an old documentary out there called War Dogs of the Pacific talking about the marine war dog program. It's powerful seeing those old vets tear up decades later over a dog the were the handles for back in the war and many attribute thier lives to the work the dogs did or in a few cases the very lives of thier dog.
These dogs are too good for us
Had a Newfy Landseer,
best dogs out there,

We humans dont deserve dogs they're truly mans best friend😢
Thanks for making me cry today
you should do a video on the other Dickin medal recipients (and just army animals in general), and if you do i hope you include Simon from the HMS Amethyst.
(I appreciate your channel.) I enjoy in your voice when watch video.
what a geat vid agin thanx for give light to them
There's a story of a dog saving Tito during the battle of Neretva by jumping on a grenade. If true, dog single-handedly prolonged the existence of Yugoslavia by 46 years
We do not deserve dogs. My dog saved my life, and does so everyday. I wish I could give him this award. He has seen wars that are beyond comprehension deep in the soul and mind of a broken human. Yet he stays... I don't deserve him
We definitely don't deserve dogs, but I'm so thankful for the fact we do.
Humans don't deserve dogs They are too pure for this world.
Very glad these boys and girls got their own episode giving their history of service. The companionship and service they give, both in and out of combat, is of inestimable value! They continue to give companionship and service even now, after the guns fall silent, as many a wounded warrior knows all too well. Truly a gift from god. Thank you for this episode. May they all rest in honour; and may we aspire to be worthy of them.
