- ARLO GUTHRIE is interviewed by Linda Ellerbee on LATER WITH BOB COSTAS in an episode that aired July 15th, 1991. Topics addressed include what it was like growing up the son of WOODY GUTHRIE (great story about going to school and hearing THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND and thinking it had been just a household song his Dad made up), Bob Dylan visiting his home and father, the positive and negative impact that the song (and film) ALICE'S RESTAURANT upon his life. Arlo also recounts his unconventional Bar Mitzvah which more resembled a Woody Guthrie Hootenany. #arloguthrie #woodyguthrie #bobdylan #bobcostas #interview

Arlo interviews never fail to not only impress me but humour me, too. He's definitely the kind of person this world needs and I'm grateful we have him
Ditto❗ Yup‼ G-G (🪶)
I was in Newport for the first afternoon of the Folk Festival's workshops in 1967. The program had a guy "Arlo" Guthrie at a workshop. "Must be Woody's kid", we said. I had had the wonderful experience of having Pete Seeger stop me there in 1965 and we sat under a tree talking -Pete said he needed a rest. There he was up on the little workshop stage, introducing his dear friend's son. There were maybe 200 people sitting on the grass. Arlo began with Alice's Restaurant. Oh my. The Festival changed. We heard it every day somehow. So many great artists...and all of us LOVED that story and song. We always closed out the Festival on Sunday night with We Shall Overcome. Not in 1967. We waned to End That War. Pete, everybody on stage and in audience sang at the top of our lungs. This tune was very personal to my family. 6 months earlier, my brother's Bar Mitzvah. They threw the garbage on Sunday when the dump was closed. Cops called the next day..told my Father to pick up the garbage or get arrested. As soon as the album was out, I played it for Pop. It always came out on Thanksgiving, but oh my it could get played on the anniversary of the deed. February 4th. Thank you Arlo,....we had many belly laughs,
Just finding this at the beginning of 2023. Love Arlo and his ways. A rare interview but so refreshing to hear a genuine wild spirit truth-telling.. "in anybody's generation..."
It seems most people talk about Arlo's musical talent and humor but I don't quite know if they see the immense intelligence, which is on a complete different level of brilliance. If you haven't noticed I am a big fan of Arlo and Woody.I just need to add that Arlo's hair isn't grey, it's what I call concrete blonde.
😁🦅🪶
I love Arlo!
Arlo always makes me feel good. Taking care of his dad every weekend or close to, amazing! What he didn't know and how he got around, cool. Mixed up oh I believe it. Still love the man. Went to a concert never met him .Love his music his personality his way of speaking. Thanks Arlo-- for Everything .
Arlo is a national treasure
So much so that I feel the need to stand up and salute every time I hear 'Coming Into Los Angeles'!
Wow, this was 30 years ago! Arlo is funny...Love his humor. His has been an interesting life.
I agtee....yes it is shocking that this, and much of my stuff, is three decades old
I remember Woody as a fairly young man so yeah I understand about time moving without me noticing until I got white headed.
I like Arlo's take on the 60's, that it is still going on.
The thing now is they want to enslave the population, ...cancel culture ring a bell??
Wouldn't be Thanksgiving without Alice 's Restaurant !
Or Coming into Los Angeles cause I just Wanna Ride On My Motorsicle. Lol
Amen 2 good ones
this guy is really a thinking human. respect.
Grew up listening to Woody, Bob, and Arlo, they had a big,,, influence in my life , they were my favourites
💐💐🪶😃❕
Anyone else see Dave Grohl playing Arlo in a biopic?
Really enjoyed this, thanks for sharing ❤.
reflecting on the past, living in the present and looking to the future it seems as though America's value has been so changed. Sensibility, and truth, justice and honor have flown away. I am so glad you posted this interview. Good mornin America where are you? Will I recognize in the dawning days to come, like an old fashioned love song, or a one hit wonder, gone gone gone wooh wooh wooh da da da da . Lov Ya Arlo. see ya
🐾 I remember seeing Arlo Guthrie live in Poughkeepsie playing at an extremely small venue. He opened up for Jethro Tull. This was in the very early 70's, and both shows were great.
It couldn't have been such an 'extremely small venue' if Jethro Tull, one of the big rock acts of that time, was headlining...
@@wonder6789 I know what you mean. It was a very small venue. Tull didn't always play large arenas. I found the ticket stub I saved. I stand corrected, it was not Poughkeepsie, however, the show was on April 30, 1971 at State University, New Paltz, NY at the Gymnasium. I remember it well. We actually had to sit on the hardwood floor. Both were great shows.
@@wolftracks9010 Thanks for your response. Yeah, I do remember how at that time known musicians could fluctuate from small venues to huge ones.
I heard him do a show with Pete Seeger. I think it was at SPAC. At the end, he said he'd take one request. All the boomers started to yell out, "Alice's Restaurant," when he cut them off-- "But not 'Alice's Restaurant'." So a little girl yelled out, "The Pause of Mr. Claus," and he did that one.
Keeping it real, since 1975 anyway. I hear he has his farm in West Cummington, Mass.
I think every boomer retains a shard of Arlo's sense of humor, from listening to his records. I know I still have it.
Arlo is like the perfect mix of New York Jew and Oklahoma country boy
What strikes me is the setting for Alice's Restaurant is Springfield, MA. Thanksgiving in the Birkshires ala Norman Rockwell.
@@rjonboy7608 I love The Berkshires! Been through Stockbridge numerous times.
Love this thanks for posting.✌
I love to hear Arlo talk about his life exspiriences its so intresting to talk and hear of peoples different exspiriences and cultures and ways of life and feelkngs
Thanks so much for that, totally enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching
Arlo was a True Hippie
Infinitely mire real than what passes for TV today. Both Linda and Arlo seem like real people and not avatars or automatons. And you can hear the crew in the background which adds rather than subtracts. Same with analog format.
I saw Arlo in a small pub in Nottingham, in the late 80's. He had played the Festival Hall in Croyden the night before and was a bit disappointed at the small venue but it was the best night, he did say what a good gig it was. His son was playing with the band and my daughter was very impressed.
Thanks for posting. Much appreciated. Watched Costas quite often way back then, but had no idea Arlo was interviewed. Bob not there but it’s very cool anyway.
Linda Ellerbee was my favorite fill in host
@@ClevelandLiveMusic Was she the one who ended her columns with And so it goes? Too bad there’ll be no more Arlo concerts but I’ve seen him three times and they are amongst my favorite concerts.
This is what real leadership looks like. It's inspiring.
oh man i love his hair!!
such a gentle soul!!
Hello Slyvia hildebrant, Compliments of the season to you. I thank you for just being an amazing fan - over the years and following my music. Seriously - I’m so grateful to be able to share my music 🎶 to the world ♥️
Awesome interview!
Seems like 60s will never end. And it started at the start. 1960s the critical mass/& etc.
thanks for the video, its a very good interview
Arlo helped
me become a antiwar activest way back in the 60s. Some real memories. To bad the bombs are still flying.
The United States will reap it’s karma for all of the horror that we have created around the world. Millions of civilians killed by the US government in one country alone, Vietnam.
Exactly.
@@janetpattison8474 everyone in USA 🇺🇸 shouldn't have to suffer decisions that are Stupid Government made! 🎭⛪💒
Yep
arlo brilliant thinker
Very interesting channel, thanx
Thank you
Very VERY nice. Thank you.
Arlo is so cool
@@ClevelandLiveMusic Absolutely. Peace to you. Do good things.
Dude I love your beginning intro to your video black and white and everything pretty cool how'd you do it? Everybody loves Arlo Guthrie and Dylan and Woody any old days. I'd love a farm in Massachusetts too. Or anywhere in New England for that matter. As a kid growing up in Connecticut who couldn't afford to live there and had to leave. Even as a retired military and retired Airline pilot still can't afford to live there. But maybe with the breakdown of our nation and might be able to move back to my own home state. 🙀🤠😎🇺🇸. This land is your land made for you and me. God Bless America 🇺🇸 as I saw it growing up as a young Boomer and now as an old man and a 747 jumbo jet pilot flying out of JFK and everywhere else in the planet.
Thanks...just screwing around with the Corel Video Studio effects.
Always wanted to be closer to your age as a kid
Have you listened to his son he looks and sounds just like his father rip Arlo

FYI: I'm alive and fine😊
That was a joy. Loved LInda on Overnight. Best network news show ever. Grenada invasion coverage
was only truthful reporting I remember. My dad lived in Brooklyn in the thirties. I went there twice.

Too cool of a dude!
I saw Arlington at Stony Brook. He was great. It was so much fun
Certainly a big part of my growing up and influence .
Class act.
Love you infinity, Arlo.
I see Pat Quinn regularly walking my dogs. She's alive and well living in Calif.
Thanks for posting this.
"I was too stupid to be famous" Arlo is a national treasure and forever famous
Nothing has changed- Its still to late to tell & too soon to tell. Dylan emulated Woody as much as anyone possibly could although at some point stopped with the protest songs. In another interview he said he just cant write those songs anymore. I am glad that so many others adapted to times and never gave up.
Dylan was and mostly and still is the ultimate con man.
Such a good looking man! I believe it's the New York thing! Lol 😂 🇺🇸🎭🌃🌉🗽🌉⛪💒😎🎸🕺🏻💃🏻👯🕺🏻💃🏻👯🤹💝🤼🤸🤸🤸🤺
His children are all healthy
Arlo RULES
Does anyone else see Dave Grohl?
Seriously. He even seems like the same type person. Grounded. Not full of himself.
Now that you mention it, I see it, and will never be able to not see it! 😆
Lol, Arlo goes grunge, ahaha
i was thinking the same thing
Alice's Restaurant Massacree
These people could not survive without anything to vehemently complain about in order to elevate themselves. It is their raison d'etre
Respectfully, Dylan may have sounded incoherent and he knew exacrly what he was on about. Thanks for the insight
I wonder if Arlo Guthrie and Leon Russell ever met.
i am willing to bet yes
Did the blind judge enjoy seeing himself in the movie?
the jack of hearts may know..
Now i realize...He rebuilt his live and carrer in 80s... playing guitar in Metallica.
Umm.
Ha ha ha
Looks like Dave Grohl at 65
Well, in the "1960's" I was a roman catholic....then in 1969, I smoked some pot, and became a radical.....vietnam was off the hook.....later i became a born- again.....I am glad i did because it was a crazy time, and alot of stupid things were done......now i can i understand the whole era because i know the bible!!!....by the way, i am still a hippie, and believe in everything we did back then!!!....except free love!.....i see everyday the effects of that idea......I work in property, and it hurts me to see the children of that idea.....we were right about pot!!!!....and peace!!!!! Hah!!!!
People who don’t have lives, well, they are bored & have no purpose, so they love to mess with, & have opinions about strangers lives.
I'm sorry but Linda is NOT Costas as an interviewer.
Agreed 100%
Few are
Did the 60s mean anything? Ask Arlo now after he endorsed Ron Paul and was a registered republican. As HST said, it crested and receded.
Linda not quite Bob. Too bad, would've made better interview.
So he had kids without knowing whether he might pass on Huntington's disease. A laissez faire attitude may have suited him but it's a hell'v an approach to parenting.
Judgmental
We as a species recently discovered genetics…. Most people aren’t paying attention to it. And then ignorant humans believe we are capable of undermining the instinct to reproduce for the betterment of mankind.
Humans are not capable, as a whole, each individual, of using their knowledge to stop their unwarranted behaviors.
You know to be fair Huntington s wasn't really much info about it except the 50/ per cent risk for your children. I was 27 when diagnosed at John Hopkins Baltimore. I'm 70 now & still trucken. my son (only child) that 53 and no sign of disease. always a fan!
M
"I don't like doing interviews", starts talking, doesn't stop.
Costas could do that....and Arlo too!
