    This album actually really impressed me. Possibly even made me a bit of a fan. I enjoyed the variety of genre's she explored and while she may not have perfected each song, you can still feel what she was going for. In a way I love the fact that the album isn't perfect because it kinda displays what is going on in her head. She is in a new place, feeling new emotions and doesn't know exactly how to feel about it and it reflects in the music/genre's throughout the album.
    Very impressive.

    I wrote this somewhere else too-
    It's Nice To Have a Friend wrenches my heart in a good way. It's a dreamlike fantasy of a 'normal' relationship she so craved for. It's so simple--everything is simple from the lyrics to the plot of the lyrics to the production. It's the simplicity of childhood friends turned lovers for life. She calls out how it's nice to have a friend that has your back your entire life. This song kills me for some reason, idk what reason. It's a whimsical, stream of consciousness-writing a distant dream. For some reason, THIS track really cements the fact that she's gonna end up with Joe for the rest of her life. The background of the track makes me think of what pure love would sound like. It's childlike, it's a ringing sound. It's simple, it's love. I am a sucker for anything lovey dovey 😩

      Mmmmm. I saw '1989' in '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'. That tilted me to the point I believe I can do a better job of making such a book by myself as opposed to the vast number of people who worked on it. If that's her best album which, let's be frank, it is, then that speaks volumes to me about her musical worth: she has none.
      To this day, I'm still haunted by her monotone announcement of "Welcome to New York." Monotone isn't exactly in the spirit of music...

      TooTsaka welcome to New York is the worst song on 1989 and kinda destroys the experience from the get-go. In hindsight It should’ve been somewhere in the forgettable middle of the track list. New Romantics should be on the regular album and would’ve been the exciting opener that wtny failed to be

    Just kind of a random anecdote: I totally understand your position on the track “I forgot you existed,” with the whole pretending that you really don’t care but you’re like keeping a secret eye on your ex.
    All I can say is, I got out of a toxic relationship recently and ever since I cut that person off, my life has drastically changed for the better, so much so that yes, at times I literally forgot that they existed. And when I do look back, I have that sort of humorous outlook/attitude like Taylor, in a kind of “wow, I once thought I couldn’t live without this person, and look at me now- I don’t love them, I don’t hate them it’s totally indifference to the point that I don’t even think about them anymore.” Idk if that made sense, but when I heard “I forgot that you existed,” I instantly related with the song.

    I loved this album so much. It became my favorite from her way to fast, at least from a lyrical perspective. Even though I think it has some downsides as it goes slow at times like Afterglow or False God I really like the musicality, it's quite experimental and expressive which made it feel so new and different. With each listen (there have been at least 10) I feel like the production makes this album amazing. Also it feels too long but I really like it. Being a hardcore Swiftie for the last 12 years makes this album so much appealing and exciting overall. If I had to rate it over 10 it would probably be an 8.5, truly loved it ♡

    Wow, we're more opposite in some regards than I expected. Paper Rings is my favorite track. I absolutely love what Jack Antonoff did with it as it almost sounds like something that would be on the Scott Pilgrim vs The World soundtrack and I was blown away the first time I heard it. And then I only have 3 tracks I'd consider least favorites, one of them being Miss Americana which happens to be one of your favorites hahaha (the other 2 are The Man and False God. I either liked or really loved most everything else)
    I actually thought it was decently cohesive if not more so than her past albums (I've never really thought cohesiveness was her thing), but I can definitely understand where you're coming from. This is definitely her most diverse record yet. I personally love that aspect about it, but I really can't blame anyone if they think otherwise. :)
    I know this will seem high to some people, but I'm thinking it's a definite 4/5 for me. As far as pop Taylor goes, it's not quite as good as 1989, but still a big step up from reputation (coming from someone who actually liked that album lol)

    The only issue i have with taylor is that she prefers quantity over quality. I know that Tay is such a phenomenal and productive songwriter of our generation, no doubt about it, but the way she selected which songs could made it into each album is weird sometimes. Lover could beat 1989 or red in my opinion unless she filter it down and removed the unnecesary filters like me, yntcd, i forgot u existed, its nice to have a friend (they are fun and catchy af dont get me wrong) and release em to b sides or being bonus tracks. Even 1989 has some flaw just because she chose to include basic songs like welcome to new york, bad blood and how you get a girl instead of the holy trinity bonus tracks: wonderland, you are in love and new romantics. Guess geniuses are weird sometimes.

    Let me start this by saying that Taylor Swift is not like most artists I listen to. In fact, I would say shes one of if not the only pop artist I listen to on a regular basis. (My normal music intake being Alt-rock pop-punk etc) I absolutely adored this album. Since its release, I have listened to it 5 times and will most likely listen for a 6th time later today. This is probably my favorite Taylor Swift album and I am happy that it is seeing as I feel that her last record in Reputation is her worst by far. The only songs that I have mixed feelings on are London Boy, Soon you'll get better, and ME!. Outside of those three tracks, I love every other song on this album. This album was a much-needed change of pace for Taylor and I am beyond excited to see what she has in the works for years to come. Lover is a 4.5/5 for me.

Lyrically, this is a huge step up from reputation and I think overall it’s a good record. There are some really good lyrical moments; while some of it gets dangerously close to “stereotypical pop song” land, you do get a lot of that personal detail that I think is what made her so good in the first place. 4/5 for me.

As someone who has been a fan for a long time, I love laying in bed and listening to it all at once, no interruptions. And it’s a lot of songs, but it’s only an hour long, which is pretty normal for an album. The way I see it, she put out 18 quality songs that she is very, very proud of. I don’t personally see the problem.

    In general, yeah, I agree. The worst transition here that you didn't mention is from London Boy to Soon You'll Get Better.
    I Forgot That You Exicted sounds to me like a classic Taylor song. With different instrumentation it could go with the Fearless album just fine, it's that classic. It's Taylor in her very old mentality of "if guys don't want me to write bad songs about them, then they shouldn't do bad things". It's a song that comes from the same place as Picture to Burn, Should've Said No, WANEGBT, IKYWT and much more. If it was on Fearless the secret messege would have been "twitter".
    I don't have a problem with the religious imagery in False God because I don't think it's random, and I don't think this song is about sexy vibe. That was Dress. I actually think False God is one of her more mature and relateable songs. It speaks about long distance relationship and why would you ever do that? Because you have deep faith in this relationship that is similar to religious experience. You may say it's cliche but I don't think it's silly.
    The Archer is a song with solid lyrics and composition that bore me to death, and I cannot get around the fact that it sounds EXACTLY like Melodrama.

    Everything that you said about I Forgot That You Existed I totally agree with! Even though I liked the song, it did come off as her trying to not care but you know deep down she does lol. I felt that about her a lot in Reputation too tbh. Also, she keeps bringing that up, the whole not caring thing but the fact that it keeps reappearing in her albums makes me think the exact opposite LOL.
    Anyways, about Lover the album, I quite enjoyed it actually. Didn’t care too much for the last part of the album but the first part was good. I still think 1989 and Speak Now are my faves but Lover was better than Reputation IMO

    I never get why critics have such an issue with a particular paced song being followed up by a song with a different pace. If she placed all similar like songs in order to one another y’all would say all the songs sound similar. Also don’t like how it seems you’ll easily congratulate and praise the things the men had a hand in but then want to so easily be critical of Taylor and her writing, singing and decisions she made. I’ve watched another review of another artist on your page and you seemed far less nit picky.

    I'm just happy that ME! and YNTCD are the outcast of this record.
    I Forgot That You Existed sounded very Hayley Kiyoko.
    I agree, the tracklisting is confusing. It's like she only arranged them that way just based on the titles not the mood.
    In conclusoon, Lover has more standout songs than Reputation but the magnitude of those strong songs isn't that big enough like Delicate and Getaway Car. Still a tad better experience listening to it full.

  • @danieldassis
    @danieldassis 5 лет назад +1

    I think that having 18 songs it's a great place to mix styles, cause if she didn't I'm pretty sure people would be like "omg why 18 songs it sounds the same", and it works perfectly for her because she has so many backgrounds in music. So I love that she brought us everything that she has been in the past with new sounds too, and this is a new begining for her, it's the first album that she owns so she might as well just bring everything she is from now on.
    Reputation was chapter to talk about the Taylor that the media built, it was never meant to be her actually, she just wanted to close that chapter and move on. Thats why the first song is "I forgot that you existed", she said on spotify that is meant to leave behind everything that happened on Reputation.

    Honestly I love this album. It’s definitely too long, I’d cut maybe 4 tracks (ME! is the worst by far). I agree the track list would benefit greatly from a reshuffle.
    Overall, I feel like as far as ‘popular’ pop artists go, Taylor is still one of the best. My current ranking of her official pop albums would be 1989>Lover>reputation. Red will always reign supreme in her discography for me though

  • @steveb2027
    @steveb2027 5 лет назад +1

    For me personally, this album is her best since Red. I feel like after the huge commercial success of 1989, reputation felt kinda rushed and didn't really live up to the hype for me, but in Lover I personally found what made me like her music in the first place.

  • @luigikawakamidacruz2512

  • @TheOgreMan
    @TheOgreMan 5 лет назад +1

    I went into the album expecting a pop album. In other words, I didn't expect it to have a certain mood and/or style all the way throughout. The 2 singles definitely showed that, and I still enjoy those songs to date. I personally had a lot of fun with this album, and I enjoyed just about every single track, for different reasons. I don't listen to too many pop albums, but when I do, I get bored easily and lose interest. Lover did not do that, and that's why I love it. My favorite songs are definitely, Soon You'll Get Better, Lover, Miss-Americana and the Heartbreak Prince and Daylight.
    Way better than Reputation though. That album disgusts me, minus like 3 songs

  • @Kate-wp9ut

    I really get why she wrote the man, yes she’s had a lot of success but it’s come with a lot of criticism. Pretty much everything she does is wrong on some level for some people and she gets called shrewd and manipulative. When she’s just a canny business woman and so what if she writes songs about her personal life most artists do.
    Compared to say Ed Sheehan who’s had probably about the same amount of success in a shorter time and written songs about famous and non famous exes love songs/break up songs. No one questions him or gives him constant criticism about everything he says and releases or slut shamed him about the Ellie Goulding song which was pretty obviously about her.
    Sad to say in 2019 it’s still a double standard, if Taylor were a man half of what she’s done wouldn’t be a big deal

  • @JDlovescats979
    @JDlovescats979 5 лет назад +1

    I almost completely agree with your overall rating (I'd probably give it a 3.5/5). Before I explain more I just want to say that The Man isn't about her success but more about how women and their achievements/actions are talked about REGARDLESS of their success. Every woman I know, even those who are major players in their field, are talked about differently than men who do the same things or have similar achievements. I am coming from a science background and I can't tell you the number of times I've heard the same person call a strict female lab head "uptight" and "hard to work with" while an equally strict male lab head just has "high quality standards" and is "invested in his students' projects". It's that kind of disparity in vocabulary that she was talking about, but I digress.
    Overall I think my biggest issue with the album is the tracklist order. A lot of the pacing and sonic cohesion issues could be fixed if the tracklist was in a different order. I think having "I forgot you existed" as the first song was a good choice (hear me out). I feel that since reputation was all about how people view/talk about her, having IFYE at the start of the album is sort of her tying up reputation by going "yeah this stuff is always going to happen so I can't keep focusing on it, anyways on to what actually matters:..." Personally I think a better order would have been (not saying this is the only way, just a suggestion) 1. IFYE 2.The Man 3. Cruel Summer 4. London Boy 5. I think he knows 6. Afterglow 7. the Archer 8. Miss Americana 9. You Need to Calm Down 10. Death by a thousand cuts 11. Lover 12. Paper Rings 13. It's nice to have a friend 14. False God 15. Me! 16. Cornelia Street 17. Soon you'll get better 18. Daylight

    The best album by Taylor is speak now. Everyone considers either red or 1989,but no. Red has amazing lyrics but the melodies are bad, it gets boring by the time you get to the last songs. 1989 has good melodies, but sometimes the synth production starts to feel monotonous. On speak now, she has good lyrics and great melodies. Listen to mine or mean or better than revenge, great melodies and great versatility.

    This album was a flop imo. The quality just isn't there. Speak Now, Red and 1989 had no skips, they were solid in their entirety. It feels as though Taylor has lost her creative spark. Reputation felt similar, though it had new topics which carried it through. Lover was promoted as a cheery love album, yet does almost nothing to bring any new perspectives to the table. The lyrics are boring, repetitive and forgettable even on the good tracks. I'm a long time Taylor fan and to see her putting out mediocre music when she is capable of much more is sad in a way. Lover feels as though it was made to make money and achieve nothing else. Which it has. Her social commentary is too late for it to even be worth saying. Again nothing new and it feels like she's just trying to gain brownie points. I adore Taylor, I don't adore this album.

At first I thought this album was a mixed bag too. Scattered and should be rearranged or whatever. But I still think it’s really good and I don’t mind that coz it’s a pop album. You’ll have everything. And you don’t have to listen to it as a whole. Also, she said that it’s all about like being in love or a lover so mixed emotions are expected. Taylor is a good storyteller and she nailed it here again so I think it was well written.

    I loved it John. Repeated listens make it sound better. I do agree 18 tracks were unnecessary. She could leave out stuff like forgot you existed, me! etc. But other than like, 4 or 5 songs it is pretty solid. I think it sounds least like anything she did before. Reputation was a train wreck, yes, but it held the 'in a swift song you focus more on the words' vibe. Lover on the other hand, makes you appreciate the production more than the words; (or maybe I feel this way because English is not my first language? :-p) which I do not think is necessarily a bad thing in her case, because the lyrics in most of the songs here seem well thought out. It just means that Antonoff, Bell, Little and the others deserve just as much appreciation.

    I love your reviews but sorry I'll have to say this, I dont agree with the criticsm for "appealing" to the LGBTQ crowd, I don't know if you have a problem with LGBTQ+ people but well... saying that since she never did something before she shouldn't do now is kinda crazy, OF COURSE she should and I'd love to see more artists do it.
    And Taylor is friends with Todrick who had the cast idea for YNTCD, it was a great set up and moment to do it.
    And I say all of this being part of the LGBTQ+ community, man come on its pride month and you're NOT gonna do anything?? Now THAT is a bad thing, pride month it's meant to be talked about and celebrated!!!!. Are you gonna tell people to not release Christmas songs during christmas? as an admittedly very big taylor swift fan, i feel like this album really is for the fans. her lyrical references to previous albums “i used to think true love was burning red, but it’s golden”. there are so many little nods like that through the album for the fans to appreciate.
    i do agree that i kind of hate the way she placed the songs, it’s very confusing, and why me! is even on this album, let alone the leading single? maybe she thinks it’s funny to put out the worst songs as her singles and knows we all think that?
    i also feel like the man was less about success, and more about being bitter about all the flack for her love life, and dating choices.
    anyway, always enjoy your reviews! 👍🏻
