Hey Adam, to fix your complaint about the Switch turning back on when you dock it, you need to go into the console settings and turn off the option to mimic your TV power state. It is turning back on because when you dock it your TV is currently on so the dock is powering your Switch back on because of this setting.
Adam Koralik No problem, I should have mentioned that it will appear to do nothing different at first. The screen will come back on when you dock it, but after leaving it alone for about a minute it will turn off again. I guess because Nintendo?... Btw, it doesn't sound like you venture to far north into WI most times, but if you ever make it to Appleton, WI I own a small retro video game store you might be interested in checking out some day. Adam you will likely need to amend a lot of the info in this vid. the amperage/wattage of the output of the battery bank is so important. It needs to basically emulate at or above the power supply (15v at 2.6 amp Minimum) in order to charge and play. Also a high quality usb- c cable that can handle it also matters. I have been able to recharge my switch from dead almost 3 times to full on the battery pack i have. Just saying my anker also has a smart charging system that can tell what power draw the device its connected to and charge it up faster/more efficiently. You need to look into this more as alot of other review channels with greater electrical/technical knowledge figured out early on that you need to have a battery bank that outputs power at a certain level minimum plus a decent cable. So as a portable i totally disagree with you. I could play about 10-12 hours minimum with a full charge and my battery bank without ever being close to a power outlet and I dont even have the largest bank available. I would also say give it more time a lot of companies are jumping on board with products marketed towards the switch and it wont be long before you see cables and portable batteries that can handle the switch power draw requirements. also i got close to 5 hours on fast rmx and over 5 hours with bomberman with the screen turned down a bit. so it depends on the game.
Was going to comment this same thing; my Anker 21000+ with a quality cable does great charging the Switch even when playing it. If I charge it in standby with the battery I can get 3 full charges and it does it in a reasonable amount of time compared to the dock. Ideally, the charger/battery should be able to provide 15V @ 2.6 Amps to actually charge while playing, just like the included charger.
exactly. 15v at 2.6 amps min. I just so happen to have a anker as well with that whole smart charge system where it can tell if its your phone or ipad etc and speed up the charging accordingly.
its a Anker battery I bought a while back. I just so happens to put out the correct voltage and amps to charge the switch properly. Its size isnt that big actually physically, but it is a bit heavy being a battery. I have seen some youtubers recently get free battery banks from other companies marketed towards the switch. Like the previous person who replied to my initial post it needs to be at least outputting 15v at 2.6 amps in order to charge the switch up while its on or in standby efficiently. If you have a bank that outputs lets say on 5v it will charge the switch very slowly only if it were off, but i think if it were on the battery would be draining faster than the battery could replenish. Also make sure you get a decent usb c cable that can handle at least the min voltage and amps not some cheapo cable.
One Thing you have to remember though is that most smartphones have glass screens, whereas the Switch has a plastic screen. This greatly improves the shatter resistance of it, but does sacrifice its scratchability. Check out JerryRigEverythings video on the Switch's durability.
I just wish that Nintendo would actually COMPETE with Sony and Microsoft again. I almost wish that the Wii flopped, because ever since the Wii, Nintendo keeps thinking they need to underpower their consoles and include a gimmick in order to be popular. I miss the days when Nintendo was about WHAT we play and not HOW we play
exactly, they fucked up and merged their handheld/console divisions and now, going forward. Will only be (probably, i'm speculating) handhelds from now on. The DS and 3ds were PERFECT, and they should have kept iterating on it, now they freaking killed off the dual screen handheld concept. The maps, and menu were on the bottom screen, so you don't have to pause and bring up a new menu, and pokemon, you could do selection for pokemon/items, and pokeballs all on the bottom screen. Like why not iterate on it and make more powerful handhelds that had dual screens?! It doesn't make sense to me, now all we have is the switch!
Why Nintendo won't ever do an external optical disc drive for backward compatibility: Since hardware is sold at a loss to begin with, the purpose of hardware sales is to move more new games. A backward compatibility add-on would only stimulate the used market, or just give people another way to play the games they already have. If Nintendo wants you to play older games on the new hardware, they'll sell them to you via an online store and virtual console.
Its always good that Nintendo hasen't used propietary storage for their systems. The Wii, 3DS, and DSi all had sd card. The vita used special memory cards that are super expensive.
For me, it's cumbersome with the block halfway in the cable. Especially for a laptop or handheld (PSP had this style). I hate the bulk of weight in the middle of the cable that's always hanging and pulling down. In the case of the Wii U, it's excess bulk to deal with for cable management.
Michael Pascoe, for the most part that's true. MacBooks have that cable that if you want, you can plug the brick directly to the wall. I'm sure eventually most laptops will be able to just have a small brick on the outlet.
Im just really impressed that they were able to pull this off for 250 dollars, I'm sure they could've addressed all of the limitations if they had a bigger budget. I bet they release something like a XL later
I noticed in the Data Management screen, the bar between "Manage Software" and "Manage Save Data/Screenshots" is blank. You think they'll add the option to transfer data from HDD to SD card at some point?
great vid with some good points. I'm definitely planning on getting one. a point about portability as a hand held though: for example, I'm on the road a lot for work and stay in hotels. sometimes flight, sometimes drive. i have a PS4 but just a pain to take even though I'd like to as it's great to have while away in hotels. switch really appeals as a very passable console for home and also away while fitting very well into any hand baggage or light travel bag. that's one market of interest.
So if the head-phone jack is only on the console, how will that work when onlne services launch in fall of 2017, if someone wants to use the Switch in TV mode? (Please let me know if Nintendo has already said something regarding this issue.)
Great review man. I feel like you're one of the few reviewers out there who are as least biased as possible. I like how you always have interesting criticism about a console that a regular consumer might over look/not notice. 👍🏽👍🏽
The issue with turning the system off is a feature and not a design flaw. The system is always meant to be in sleep mode when not in use. This system was built around modern mobile technology. Same concept for smartphones. A smartphone in sleep mode could last days without charge. Same thing with a modern notebook...they can go weeks without charge if kept in sleep mode. Turn the device off only if its acting defective or if you plan on boxing it away for an extended period of time. Changes I'd like to see in the next iteration: -Additional USB-C port on top of system -Kick plate across entire bottom of system, instead of small kickstand -Lighter (system is kinda heavy...) -Better battery life
Adil I. More money that's another con to go on my con list . I'm not impressed one bit with this switch . I think it's a joke to be honest . I have a con list in front of me the length of my arm. I so wanted this switch to be good , but in my opinion it's not
That's unlikely since most of it's time will not be spent using the battery. Lithium-ion batteries do very slowly deteriorate over time, but the main cause of the loss we see is recharge. My phone is only on it's charger when it gets to the end of it's battery, which means every few days it's going through a full recharge and losing some capacity. I've had it over a year and have only lost about 1.5 hours of a little over 2 days. The Switch on the other hand will spent most it's time at 100% docked and not recharging, and thus not losing most power.
I don't know. But my point was that for truly portable scenarios, like being in a car or waiting room, I'd think people would want something that's meant for short bursts.
Love your content, have done for years, you know what you're talking about and now have a solid fan base. Good job man, keep it up. It's the content that comes first. That being said, it's high time you up your production game, maybe with better audio equipment, lighting and maybe a new camera. Let's polish up the quality of the videos to go along with the quality content. Intro audio included, time to re-record that i think. Just my two cents, a loyal fan that wants to see your channel grow with a bit of constructive criticism.
Do you have to have the tablet in the dock to get this thing to play on the TV? Can you bypass the dock and just plug the tablet directly into the TV? I'm in and out of hotels constantly for my job and want to play on hotel TVs but really don't want to lug the dock with me everywhere I go. It might be a dealbreaker for me honestly if the dock is required to play this on a TV.
Axel Alexzander You have to bring the dock with you, there is no HDMI out on the switch. Plus you wont be lugging anything anywhere as the dock is simply a plastic holder for the console with a small circuit board in it, it probably weighs less than a bottle of aftershave.
Hey +Adam Koralik glad to hear your initial thoughts. I was a little surprised by the overwhelming negative vibe - I certainly don't think it's perfect, but I was expecting more positives. The inability to move save/update data is inexcusable and needs to be fixed. Otherwise my only gripe is that the dock has the tendency to scratch the screen. (Screen protector required!) That being said, I think your/+Rerez 's mobile battery pack is messed up, I've seen much better charging than that. Also, I think that the pocket fit portability argument is kinda flawed. Then again, you yourself have admitted you're not really into portable gaming. Personally I think the size is the perfect compromise between portability and home console power. Overall I've been very impressed with the console so far and I've already had some great experiences with it.
+Adam Koralik, I'm very glad to hear you enjoy it - I certainly didn't mistake your critiques as "hating" on the console. I think what I meant to say was that I was *hoping* that you liked it, since I'm hopeful for its future. I'm rooting for it, but without blind fanboyism. I will readily admit it has issues that can, and should be fixed. Let's hope Nintendo takes those issues head on and surprises us both.
I find portables nice when your significant other is using the TV and you still want to hang with them ( in other words, "No I can't just use another TV" ) It's entirely why remote play with PS4 ( or WiiU offscreen play ) is useful for me. So, for folks like me, portable is really a big deal.
I've been seeing/hearing a lot of complaints about the dock scratching the screen, I'm assuming you haven't had that problem since you didn't mention it?
I'm thinking the reason why yours isn't scratched is cause you take the screen out with the joycons on each side. Either that or people just are retarded and not careful when sliding it into the dock.
I hear the Aukey 30,000mah charger is awesome. It has quick charge 3.0, USB C and 2 USB A ports. They run about $60 but I'm sure they can be found for less.
Ninja-X3 ikr - he basically just shitted on the Nomad? lol it was one of the 1st legitimate hybrids in addition to the turbo express. it was thick af true lol but there wasn't much the Genesis could do that the Nomad couldn't
That button layout for basically all Nintendo consoles comes from the Super NES, which started the four button layout for the controllers. All Nintendo is doing is keep on going with their own creation from 27 years ago.
@18:30 It's probably the same design choice they made for the 3DS. I think it was done to prevent people from exchanging saves and digital games and whatnot(maybe just sharing in general), so they just encrypted everything.
the a/b button placement on nintendo controllers has been the same ever since the snes controller. adam must have been playing xbox recently for him to even think about it while also being weird for him to point out because the snes is one of his favourite consoles
Hi Adam ! Can you do an update about this console, 6 months later ? Few system updates later, can we : - move our saves very easily ? - power off the system with a very easy method ? regarding battery lie, it reminds two old consoles : - lynx from atari (oh boy.. what a nightmare ! Lynx is a portable console.. which need to use a wall electric plug, all the time..) - Nec PC-Engine GT (I know, old technology regarding the screen, but frankly.. what a second nightmare ...)
How do you feel about the VR potential of the Switch? Someone posted a patent from Nintendo for a method of mounting the switch to your head and using the tracking abilities of the joycons like the PS4 VR wand things
The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo's second home console that launch with 2 controllers, the first was the Famicom. The Switch is also not only Nintendo's first hybrid console but also the first console with a hybrid controller. The JoyCon controllers could be used as two separate controllers but they could also became one single controller via the included control grip or when attached to the Switch tablet. It's also Nintendo's third home console to come with a bulky power adapter plug just like the NES and Super NES whereas the N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U doesn't use the power adapter as a plug. If you count the Switch as a handheld, it will be Nintendo's first handheld that allows multiplayer without the use of WiFi or link cables or another copy of the game that means if you and a friend want to play BlazBlue IV: Central Fiction or Ultra Street Fighter II, all you need for portable multiplay are the two JoyCon controllers, no link cable, no wireless WiFi and no second copy of each game necessary.
im gonna be annoyed if they waste this things potential. it has better motion controls than the Wii, great rumble, great heat based touch screen. just imagine the games that could be made combining all those things.
Adam, this will seem silly but did you do a video about the pstv? I kno you are not a handheld guy. the vita is damn good with flaws, but wasn't fully supported. at times, I see the switch as a nintendo vita-tv all in one in their own way. curious your thoughts on hardware and similarity
Just out of curiosity, what is the Amperage of the Switch power supply? Most cell phone batteries only output 5V, 1A. Some will pump out 2.1A. If the switch brick puts out anything more than 2.1A that's probably why it's the only device that can charge the Switch quickly.
I didn't got the Wii U so the Switch will be interesting to me but for some stupid reason the console is 329 € over here in Germany. I will probably wait until more Games are out for it and get it in a Bundle with Mario Kart 8 or something for like 250-270 €?
There's an option called "Match Power State" or something like that which will prevent the Switch from turning your TV on when you dock it. It was driving me crazy as well. One thing you can't turn off is the system powering on when you dock or connect the AC adapter but it should power off on its on if you don't touch anything.
Adam, is there ANY CHANCE that you could do a BEST EXTERNAL POWER BANK FOR THE NINTENDO SWITCH video? I have been researching the topic but can't seem to find a clear answer to this question. Thanks!
I would say I'm with you on a lot of points, specifically the power brick. Most people are giving you flack for this, but here's how I see it: It's being marketed to be on the go. Give us portable charging, period. It should have been a simple wall jack with USB, then a USB type-c cable at about 7-12 feet to go with it. Why? I can unplug it from the wall and charge it in my already available PC, other wall jacks, cellphone charger, etc. This is just about my only issue with the Switch so far, and the dock.. The dock I hope gets minor improvements over time, or they release a Switch dock plus that you can pick up for $50-$100 tops, that addresses potential scratching and gives us a better upscaler chip.
Do you think that when they update their system the battery life is likely to drain further? Reason I ask is, and I know these are largely separate entities, when mobile phones update their system with further functionality it often means further background processes (those you aren't actively using). As a result there is often a significant drain when you use your phone, for anything. Am wondering when Nintendo eventually update the console and add all the functions they say they will whether the battery life will be significantly impacted. If there isn't currently an efficient way to charge it on the go, does this mean you may only be able to play on the go for an hour so?
I watched your Xbox One S unboxing just before this video and i have to say bravo Adam, you've lost a stupid amount of weight since November ! also curious to know what you think about the price of the Switch. in the US its $299 but north of the border where i'm from its $399 which makes it $70 more then the most Basic Xbox One S bundle on Amazon Canada. Though i love the Switch so far its hard to ignore that price of the Xbox. do you think this high price abroad will effect the Switch sales in Countries where the Switch is kinda expensive when compared to its competitors?
I am sure updates will iron out all problems. Some points you brought out in the video seemed less relavant to me like light damaging the Switch because is not sitting all the way in the dock or the dangers of putting the Switch in your bag. However talking about save files not transferable at the moment, surely these are very small files, right ? How big are they ?
You can use a PSP with a PS3 controller, plugged into a TV through composite cables. Nintendo Switch isn't the first Hybrid console, there have been many before it. Maybe not well, but it was still beaten to the finish line.
False. The PSP introduced video output in later models as a bonus feature. It didn't set out from day one to be a home console that doubled as a portable device. There's many instances of this throughout gaming history, I mentioned two in this video. The Switch is the first one that actually set out to be both from day one.
The kick stand is a minor gripe for me. The power adapter thing I honestly couldn't even be bothered to care about. The save data isn't really an issue right now. But like in the future with the sd card/ save game thing I could see it being an issue, especially with getting several sd cards. The dock could have been way better and is underutilized. The power thing is also kind of a non issue for me. Like with my psp I never fully turned it off. I just allways put it in sleep mode. You can put it into sleep mode from the controller. In the settings, there is literally an option to go into sleep after 4 hours of media playback. At first I'm thinking, 4 hours of watching demo videos? What? This means that some form of media is coming to the switch at some point. Its very clear that things are clearly unfinished. I think it works portable wise. I"m glad the screen is as big as it is. I think the power issue speaks more to the fact that it requires a lot of power to play the games that it does. Didn't have too many problems with my psp even though you could kind of sort of fit it in your pocket maybe, I allways carried it in the case. I've played it on my way to work a couple of times but it doesn't take me 5 hours to get to work and back. I mostly like take it out of the dock to play it while something else is occupying my tv like my computer or whe nI just feel like laying back and having it up close. Those aspects of portability are great. The controller skeleton thing was great, don't have a pro controller but you by no means need one. It also felt great holding it attatched. It feels like a marvel of technology, even though thats kind of extreame.. I mean the way the joycons attach and detach, the various ways you can play it. Every time I convert the switch joycons to a different form there is a sense of enlightenment I feel. I love the hd rumble. It is very clear from the start, even in zelda that this is not normal rumble. It feels very tingly.
Thanks for the in-depth review Adam. I'm seriously considering getting one, but only because I really want to play Breath of the Wild. Not sure I can justify buying a console for one game (although it wouldn't be the first time I've done that).
I skipped the WiiU but it actually has a decent amount of games to play now and with a fairly mature software OS. I'm not sure if I should get a wiiu on sale with Zelda or the switch at a later date. Feels like it's going to take a year or two before the switch flourishes and I have no interest in portability.
Get the Switch if you don't own a Wii U. If you own a Wii U, get zelda for Wii U as there's not many big 1st party titles coming for Switch until christmas. The Wii U never got a price cut and likely will never get one. The Wii U new is going for the same price right now as the Switch new.
For my money, I'd rather buy the mature console now. I'd recommend getting the refurbished Wii U direct from Nintendo -- it's 200.00 + S&H, and Nintendo refurbs are usually like new or better.
The reason for the poor battery charge when not using the Nintendo charging is because you were playing while trying to charge. I did a test on my one. I have a 20,000 mah USB battery pack which can kick out 2.4 Amps on a single port. My Switch was at 80% when playing Zelda then I connected it to the power pack. The system keep using it's battery which was discharging. The Switch ran flat. I then left it to charge off the battery pack which took about 3 hours (which is about right) Later once both the Switch and battery pack were at 100% I plugged them up and played Zelda, this time the Switch stayed at 100% throughout a 3 hours of playing.
after watching your video, at the very end you brought up something that concerns me. just a head's up but if anyone puts their switch in the docking station while and then turn it off. the docking station is a charger and won't treat it like its turned off. it will charge the battery and once it's 100% and will slow it down but it's still receiving electrical current. over time that can ware out the internal battery, damage the charging connectors so that it won't charge and and will warp the screen, it burns out the sides and corners. I've done this slot of times on handhelds and mobile devices. I know it's ugly, but I would suggest to anyone when you turn it off to take it out of the dock and set it beside it or something
I think this is a really well thought out device that will be purchased continuously - it's that type of thing that fits in no matter when you make the purchase, its something that you're going to want to own at some point. I think they made the perfect device and own little market space here. A perfect family item especially for parents who wants to play but the kids are on the TV. Just pick it up, play the game while they´re watching their shit and then when its in the late hours you can put it into the dock and play on the TV. It speaks to a broader audience and makes a lot more sense for anyone who is a gamer by heart, that´s why I think people will, buy this device at some point. The main arguments being the library of nintendo IP´s, combined with the flexibility that the device offers, the fact that you can bring it out on family vacations over at boring relatives, and that you can bring it with you over to your friends. Being able to play this in the back of a car or in the bed before sleep, to have nintendo games presented in these situations is what makes it so fucking good and there is no competition from the other companies in this area. I can't afford the Switch right now, but when I have the money, I will be getting it. Simple as that. But nintendo must make sure to make great games for it or there will be a lack of incentive, something nintendo must be careful about. But the more stuff they put on the system, the bigger the incentive will be, so I think this is a step in the right direction for nintendo. The thing is, even if the switch is sub par compared to the other consoles, it still has the leap of where a console should be in the future. The next nintendo system will basically be a portable 4k device that can store endless amounts of games, be anywhere and play everything nintendo AND 3rd party support, watch movies+use apps, all that type of shit. If people cannot see how great the Switch is for nintendo, then they are just wrong.
A big missed opportunity was if the joycons have to be connected to the switch to charge.... why didnt Nintendo allow for the joycon batteries to pool together with the switch battery to provide more play time? And better yet, the joycons are wireless at all times. It would have been pretty easy for nintendo to allow them to have direct contact with the switch (when linked together) and not had to rely on wireless control when they are quite literally plugged in.
the whole back button button and action button switcheroo reminded me on my PS One where I would play metal gear solid where the action button was on the side and the back button was on the bottom
This thing needs a good internet browser, google apps(drive) and multimedia playback. If they made it more like an actual tablet, people might actually bring this around instead of their ipads. It can be like an iOS/productivity device with a carefully curated games library that includes nintendo games. That would justify the size of the thing and bringing it around for a lot of people I think. Maybe make a keyboard that connects wirelessly and can have the switch docked into it with an extra battery inside. That would be cool. Pie in the sky, though.
It would be interesting to return to this subject given the success it seems to be enjoying. Time will only tell I guess but things at this point are looking good for the format.
That's ridiculous. It certainly had more launch games, but they weren't better overall. The Wii U had a bunch of inferior versions of multiplats and NSMBU (which was a bit of a milked formula at that point, imo), Nintendo Land and ZombiU. In contrast, BotW is one of the best games ever made. In my opinion, the Wii U didn't get interesting until they released Super Mario 3D World.
random channel I'm curious as to why you feel that way. Sure the Wii U had more games but which one of those launch games comes close to BoTW? Quality vs. Quantity
The Wii U launched with New Super Mario Bros. U, Mass Effect 3, Nintendo Land, Assasin's Creed 3, Arkham City, Dark Siders 2 - That's 6 above average, or 7 or above games available at launch that I remember.
DH1986 4 of those games are available on the PS3 or XBOX 360. That's last gen hardware that most people already owned, so these games didn't matter much for the Wii U's launch. Also, none of these games even come close to the quality of Breath of the Wild.
The console itself is basically just a portable console with an HDMI adapter. I wish the dock was more than just an adapter, maybe an upscaler or something.
In Japan X means "No" or "Wrong" and O means "Yes" or "Right" That explains why the buttons are set up that way on Japanese Playstation controllers. It also explains why the first Xbox with its big honking X on top completely tanked in Japan, which i always find extremely funny.
I feel like the Vita and PSTV (the box that played Vita on the big screen) combo was like a huge step in the right direction and yet nobody seemed to care. The Nintendo Switch just has the biggest potential to prove that a portable TV/Handheld combo can be done and is the future of games... and yet I lack faith in that they will use the potential that they so clearly have... I really wanted the Switch to be good. Only time will truly tell.
Quite frankly, size wise, I think most people that consider switch's size not to be a problem are either: - People that haven't never owned a portable, are on the 'portable power' hype (as it was with vita); - People that do buy portables, to play at their home couches.
pretty cool that the Wii broadband adaptor works, I wonder if others that aren't switch specific do? btw I bought the switch BB adapter, because knowing how Nintendo is with accessories like this, it will probably be hard to find quick.
You can do something similar with the PPSSPP emulator. You can upload save data from the psp to the computer, then play on your hd tv via computer. When you wanna take your game on the go, you just move your data back to your psp.
@9:47 It is not a matter of demographic but a matter of market. In the west console gaming is primarily a stationary thing, whereas in Japan it is mostly about portability.
Hey Adam, to fix your complaint about the Switch turning back on when you dock it, you need to go into the console settings and turn off the option to mimic your TV power state. It is turning back on because when you dock it your TV is currently on so the dock is powering your Switch back on because of this setting.
Orly...excellent, thanks!
Press Start Games, we are on Facebook if you want to see pictures
Please let us know if that fixed it
The button configuration has been like that since the SNES.
I would also say give it more time a lot of companies are jumping on board with products marketed towards the switch and it wont be long before you see cables and portable batteries that can handle the switch power draw requirements.
also i got close to 5 hours on fast rmx and over 5 hours with bomberman with the screen turned down a bit. so it depends on the game.
lagoveride What battery pack do you have? It must be pretty massive, to charge it 3 times fully.

To be honest with you i don't think it's gonna sell like the wii did, but i might be wrong though. Who Knows ?
Also great shirt, very clever for link to quote : "Will work for rupees" .
Tchitchouan Inouane very few systems sell like the Wii did
PS1 & PS2 did, and PS4 seems to be heading that way
Tchitchouan Inouane The PlayStation brand always do well!
Historically True, but PS3 kinda suffered in its early years due to steep price and high manufacturing cost.
One Thing you have to remember though is that most smartphones have glass screens, whereas the Switch has a plastic screen. This greatly improves the shatter resistance of it, but does sacrifice its scratchability. Check out JerryRigEverythings video on the Switch's durability.
I've been waiting for this! Thank you for awesome content as always!
Thanks for watching.
I actually very much prefer the power brick. I personally hate laptop style power cables with the power thing in the middle.
For what possible reason?
For me, it's cumbersome with the block halfway in the cable. Especially for a laptop or handheld (PSP had this style). I hate the bulk of weight in the middle of the cable that's always hanging and pulling down.
In the case of the Wii U, it's excess bulk to deal with for cable management.
Nathan Kennedy yup, agree.
the only reason laptops have the brick along the cable is because it would be too large to fit on the wall.
Michael Pascoe, for the most part that's true. MacBooks have that cable that if you want, you can plug the brick directly to the wall. I'm sure eventually most laptops will be able to just have a small brick on the outlet.
Awesome review Adam! Very good points you brought up. Hopefully with updates it will be better.
Thanks!
Currently the New 3DS is my go to portable system
Here i sit with most of the portables in existance.
What about now, 3 years later?
The mutant dog controller...coming soon to your favorite store!
+ODdm3 Thanks dude!
Changes I'd like to see in the next iteration:
-Additional USB-C port on top of system
-Kick plate across entire bottom of system, instead of small kickstand
-Lighter (system is kinda heavy...)
-Better battery life
Try charging it while it's on its kickstand and see how far you get.
FairFight14 it was so pathetic Nintendo made that mistake . I can't believe they did that. I mean what the fuck
FairFight14 that's why they have the hori stand. it's sucks that you have to pay more, but It works.
Adil I. More money that's another con to go on my con list . I'm not impressed one bit with this switch . I think it's a joke to be honest . I have a con list in front of me the length of my arm. I so wanted this switch to be good , but in my opinion it's not
Bought a stand for less than £5 ($8) didn’t cry about it on youtube.
The battery isn't really that bad. Yeah you only get about 3 hours in Zelda, but I played Shovel Knight for over an hour and only lost 8%.
Extremely different games with very different power consumption requirements.
That was my point. You made it sound like 3 hours was resting/standard battery life.
+karlvex It's a Patreon goal, believe me, I'd love to. But proper equipment would cost me more than the channel earns in six months.
Happy to hear it's on your to-do list man, i'll check out the page.
+karlvex Thanks!
+nibunker Thanks. I figured, But that sucks. I was hoping for an HDMI out on the actual tablet.
I'm the same way I'm not a portable person but is good to have options nice video brother
Switch can be turned off via controller. Push and hold the home button and a menu will slide in from the right. Cheers.
(Screen protector required!)
That being said, I think your/+Rerez 's mobile battery pack is messed up, I've seen much better charging than that. Also, I think that the pocket fit portability argument is kinda flawed. Then again, you yourself have admitted you're not really into portable gaming. Personally I think the size is the perfect compromise between portability and home console power. Overall I've been very impressed with the console so far and I've already had some great experiences with it.
I quite enjoy the platform actually, I'm just calling the issues like I see them. Not to hate, but to express desire for improvements.
Let's hope Nintendo takes those issues head on and surprises us both.
what do you think about the console Adam is it really bad or is it really good because this is just a review
I find portables nice when your significant other is using the TV and you still want to hang with them ( in other words, "No I can't just use another TV" )
It's entirely why remote play with PS4 ( or WiiU offscreen play ) is useful for me.
So, for folks like me, portable is really a big deal.
Samuel Sarette that actually made the wii u worth my while
Nice Adam. Can I use my wii u pro controllers with the switch... Happen to know that?
I've been seeing/hearing a lot of complaints about the dock scratching the screen, I'm assuming you haven't had that problem since you didn't mention it?
Correct, thankfully.
I'm thinking the reason why yours isn't scratched is cause you take the screen out with the joycons on each side. Either that or people just are retarded and not careful when sliding it into the dock.
I've heard the switch is underpowered and has trouble running Breath of the Wild. Have you experienced any performance issues, Adam?
Hey Adam would you consider the turbo express a hybrid type of console? If I remember correctly you would use the same games.
Same shit as the Nomad, just a different platform.
I hear the Aukey 30,000mah charger is awesome. It has quick charge 3.0, USB C and 2 USB A ports. They run about $60 but I'm sure they can be found for less.
do you add ambient sounds into the background of your videos or are they from a heating unit?
+Golden Grenadier City sounds, generally a train is what you're hearing.
Adam Koralik they sound very ominous, especially when you were discussing the downfall of Sega. I thought it was intentional.
I still consider the Sega Nomad as the first console/handheld hybrid. It may not be the greatest, but Sega did it first.
Ninja-X3 ikr - he basically just shitted on the Nomad? lol it was one of the 1st legitimate hybrids in addition to the turbo express.
it was thick af true lol but there wasn't much the Genesis could do that the Nomad couldn't
samo wordo Exactly. I forgot about the Turbo Express. NEC was definitely thinking ahead too.
Ninja-X3 my Nomad is still on fire ;)
Davide Nastri Awesome
Ninja-X3 absolutely!
- i remember the 1st time i brought my turbo express to school with me. my friends minds were literally blown in half 😂
That button layout for basically all Nintendo consoles comes from the Super NES, which started the four button layout for the controllers. All Nintendo is doing is keep on going with their own creation from 27 years ago.
It's not the letters dude. It's which button actually makes an action or retreat occur. It just takes getting used to.
It's funny seeing how many things the Wii U got right, that Switch didn't bring over.
@18:30 It's probably the same design choice they made for the 3DS. I think it was done to prevent people from exchanging saves and digital games and whatnot(maybe just sharing in general), so they just encrypted everything.
I love the named you have given to the JoyCon controller config!
Dogface?
Tbh I prefer the "power brick" cause I hate laptop "power bricks" where you have to connect 2 "parts" of the charging cord
So the switch only saves game data to the system itself? Not to cartridge memory like on 3DS games?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure (currently) the games are read only. Which is pretty dumb.
I want to get a Switch but that A/B button swap on the Pro controller is definitely going to mess with my brain :)
the a/b button placement on nintendo controllers has been the same ever since the snes controller. adam must have been playing xbox recently for him to even think about it while also being weird for him to point out because the snes is one of his favourite consoles
Speaking of the Game Gear, would you ever get your Game Gear modded for RGB to play it on a TV?
They must've updated the battery on the model 2 because I get around 7-8 hours of battery life
Hi Adam !
Can you do an update about this console, 6 months later ?
Few system updates later, can we :
- move our saves very easily ?
- power off the system with a very easy method ?
regarding battery lie, it reminds two old consoles :
- lynx from atari (oh boy.. what a nightmare ! Lynx is a portable console.. which need to use a wall electric plug, all the time..)
- Nec PC-Engine GT (I know, old technology regarding the screen, but frankly.. what a second nightmare ...)
How do you feel about the VR potential of the Switch? Someone posted a patent from Nintendo for a method of mounting the switch to your head and using the tracking abilities of the joycons like the PS4 VR wand things
Wait you can change the batteries on the WiiU? I didn't even know that!
Video about it: ruclips.net/video/p4YcM3UGTcM/видео.html
Does the nintendo switch work with Bluetooth heaphones?
im gonna be annoyed if they waste this things potential. it has better motion controls than the Wii, great rumble, great heat based touch screen. just imagine the games that could be made combining all those things.
Very good to know. Thanks!
cool video tech talk adam
Adam, is there ANY CHANCE that you could do a BEST EXTERNAL POWER BANK FOR THE NINTENDO SWITCH video? I have been researching the topic but can't seem to find a clear answer to this question. Thanks!
hi again Adam. great review man.
Thanks dude.
I think we all need a purse for carrying our switches.
Yet again, another great review
Thanks.
I would say I'm with you on a lot of points, specifically the power brick.
Most people are giving you flack for this, but here's how I see it:
It's being marketed to be on the go.
Thanks.
I'm sure a higher price point isn't helping. But I'm in an unfair position because I got a bunch of discounts on it. :/
Nintendo and SEGA are the only companies that use a logo for each individual console.
The main attraction to get it is to play a port. Nintendo Bait & Switch To The Bank™
It is weird that this many people watch videos like this lol only true gamers would watch content like this. Adam keep up the great work bro!
+James Fontenot Thanks!
Great video Adam!
Thanks!
Thanks for the in-depth review Adam. I'm seriously considering getting one, but only because I really want to play Breath of the Wild. Not sure I can justify buying a console for one game (although it wouldn't be the first time I've done that).
Did they fix that data transfer thing?
I think so.
Can you confirm when docking will it scratches the screen?
I have heard that when you dock it leaves scratches? I hope not. Is it true?
Is the Hype for the Switch or for Zelda?
I skipped the WiiU but it actually has a decent amount of games to play now and with a fairly mature software OS. I'm not sure if I should get a wiiu on sale with Zelda or the switch at a later date. Feels like it's going to take a year or two before the switch flourishes and I have no interest in portability.
Edmundo studios I'm thinking to do the same thing .
If you wanna get a Wii U, I'd jump on it now. The price is starting to rise up again, now that the official supply is drying up.
Juvenal do you think it's a good idea ?
Get the Switch if you don't own a Wii U. If you own a Wii U, get zelda for Wii U as there's not many big 1st party titles coming for Switch until christmas. The Wii U never got a price cut and likely will never get one. The Wii U new is going for the same price right now as the Switch new.
For my money, I'd rather buy the mature console now. I'd recommend getting the refurbished Wii U direct from Nintendo -- it's 200.00 + S&H, and Nintendo refurbs are usually like new or better.
I think they missed the ball on one big thing. The patches and save data should be on the carts.
I then left it to charge off the battery pack which took about 3 hours (which is about right)
Later once both the Switch and battery pack were at 100% I plugged them up and played Zelda, this time the Switch stayed at 100% throughout a 3 hours of playing.
home tour/gamesetup tour
Nope.
after watching your video, at the very end you brought up something that concerns me. just a head's up but if anyone puts their switch in the docking station while and then turn it off. the docking station is a charger and won't treat it like its turned off. it will charge the battery and once it's 100% and will slow it down but it's still receiving electrical current. over time that can ware out the internal battery, damage the charging connectors so that it won't charge and and will warp the screen, it burns out the sides and corners. I've done this slot of times on handhelds and mobile devices. I know it's ugly, but I would suggest to anyone when you turn it off to take it out of the dock and set it beside it or something
Looking forward to the predictions vid
Are you going to go for a complete Nintendo Switch game collection?
No one deserves to have to go down that route :-(
Jaime Luna be an easy goal with the current line up
Way too early to make that call.
Why? All laptops and portable are designed that way.
A big missed opportunity was if the joycons have to be connected to the switch to charge.... why didnt Nintendo allow for the joycon batteries to pool together with the switch battery to provide more play time? And better yet, the joycons are wireless at all times. It would have been pretty easy for nintendo to allow them to have direct contact with the switch (when linked together) and not had to rely on wireless control when they are quite literally plugged in.
switch is a great handheld/console hybrid in my opinion
Nice discussion Adam! But I don't really have any interest in getting a Switch. I'm fine with my PlayStation 4
I'm really looking forward to get one of these by xmas but why why WHY an fn power brick!!!!
the whole back button button and action button switcheroo reminded me on my PS One where I would play metal gear solid where the action button was on the side and the back button was on the bottom
I was watching another one of your videos when this came up. I immediately clicked on it. I guess I'm the first viewer lol
I feel that the Wii U had better launch games than the switch
Don't get plastic screen protector. Tempered glass is in every way superior. Easier to apply it and far more protective of the system.
Quite frankly, size wise, I think most people that consider switch's size not to be a problem are either:
- People that haven't never owned a portable, are on the 'portable power' hype (as it was with vita);
- People that do buy portables, to play at their home couches.
holding the home button on the joycon brings up the power options
pretty cool that the Wii broadband adaptor works, I wonder if others that aren't switch specific do? btw I bought the switch BB adapter, because knowing how Nintendo is with accessories like this, it will probably be hard to find quick.
+downphoenix Probably works.
Now you've called if Dogface, it's all I see. I like the look of that pro controller. Did that USB3 come inhandy for owt good?
You can do something similar with the PPSSPP emulator. You can upload save data from the psp to the computer, then play on your hd tv via computer. When you wanna take your game on the go, you just move your data back to your psp.
@9:47 It is not a matter of demographic but a matter of market. In the west console gaming is primarily a stationary thing, whereas in Japan it is mostly about portability.
