I realize the tone of this review might sound more negative than intended due to the praise being lost among the contextual talking points, but I think it's still one of the better bodybuilding documentaries out there. It’s definitely worth watching, although I stand by my thoughts that it promotes a decidedly one-sided narrative of Heath without digging too deep into its subject matter. And finally, how and why did The f@*kn Rock manage to insert himself into this as a credible commentator on the topic of bodybuilding and make it all about him in parts?? I know he financed it, but WTF dude? Let me know your thoughts in the comments and thanks for watching.
Very, very, very, very well stated Shawn. You have described the the first "millennial" Mr. Olympia. Superficial struggles, superficial hardships, superficial everything else. Worse than Flex Wheeler... if this is possible. Success is distilled down into 2 things; Genetics and Insulin. He is called Philsulin Health for a reason. The narration here is the best so far, all the more reason to keep going, belting these out. Regardless of views, keep going but not for us... for yourself to see just how far and how well you can out do yourself with each video. Cheers!
Well said mate. Phil.was talking drug stacks in an interview and said he never used insulin! I guess that bubbly muscle was the result of all that "hard" training! Thanks always for the words of encouragement. The views have hit the shitter while I notice some other new AI generated voixeover, interview clip-stitched together, utter dog$hit Bodybuilding history commentary channels are blowing up. I can't stoop to that level of crap content - but it's inarguably what the army of audience idiots want. I'll just keep doing my thing for the small amount of people who appreciate it while trying to improve on future videos like you said.
I think you did an absolutely fantastic job with your review, you said what many bodybuilding fans believed then and now. Great job, just straight forward honest review. You're obviously very well educated in the sport of bodybuilding and don't worry about your tone, you're allowed to have it and it didn't seem negative.
Really appreciate that Rich. My girl watched the film with me and on first viewing we both loved it. I watched a few more times and noticed a few faults beyond the glitter and flash. It's very well made and professionally done, but I thought they could've dug deeper and been more balanced. When my girl watched the review she said it sounded "too harsh" - which wasn't my intention - hence the disclaimer in the pinned comment. Thanks always for your feedback mate. I love it
Funny enough I always liked his articulate candour and was confused as to why he showed the same level of arrogance as Arnold, but was hated for it. I think he took himself too seriously whereas Arnold laughed at everything and seemed to recognize the absurdity of it all, even then. Thanks always for the positive feedback and comments mate! You're awesome
Did you catch the interview of Phil with piers, Morgan. It was a great interview and the comments are full of praise. Also he's commentary on body-building shows are good too. I think in his retirement phil is more likeable and seems more relatable to the general public, as for hes Physique I predicted he would win the O before he won it. He stood out with his size and shape but like dorian and Ronnie before him he's body got, worse and less shapely with the more he won. Overall I never hated Heath like so many I just thought he was a bit immature like when he mentioned Lui Marco after one of his win. He's definitely not the most likeable,Mr O but even Sergio was almost shot to death by his wife and told little kids to fuck of when they asked him for autographs. Hey nobody's perfect..
Shawn, brilliant observation on without the buffer of the magazines, where writers curated and even created more interesting personas, Heath left to his own devices, should have perhaps had a PR team running interference.
On a forum, Phil appeared and posted a part of a new video and asked what anyone would like added to it. I posted and said that I was interested in diet. He responded by calling me a bunch of names and lamenting that fans just didn't appreciate what he gave them. Ok. I just logged off and never really liked him much after that. He definitely did a lot to alienate fans and that is his own fault.
Ahh that sux when our heroes do that. I think Phil was navigating this social media shit blindfolded with no precedent, so with no experience the negativity could overwhelm,.and you start lashing out at the fans in frustration. It's hard to know the hearts of men, but I hope he's grown in maturity as we all have over the years....well some of us at least lol
The cream would have risen to the top In terms of the quality of his early physique, but Jay's vocal endorsement definitely helped him get noticed and attract the press and $$$ of a Weider contract. Bodybuilding at the end of the day is a popularity contest and any reputable promotion will intangibly assist you in getting noticed by lazy judging panels.
After Kai didnt compete in Olympia, Phil's physique goes downhill. I guess its true that we are better when we have a rival. Even Phil said that Kai made him better in interview that i watched. 2011 Phil is one of physique that hard to beat.
Very true. I think also if Kai had kept going he could've had some Olympias of his own. He spat the dummy and showed that his metaphysical pseudo intellectual philosophical BS was a facade and resigned himself to the long list of guys who never made it
Yo Carved Outta Stone, I gotta say... Literally TWO MINUTES into watching this review you were 💯% RIGHT ON/SPOT ON not only about the state of bodybuilding TODAY from the generation iron documentary... but also the sad but plain TRUTH about phil heath.... B-O-R-I-N-G Friend of mine ask me how is it thay JAY CUTLER only won 4 Sandowns to phil heath's 7 or 8(who cares) And said just TWO words.... COMPETITION AND CHARISMA. We ALL know who Jay Cutler's competition was(RONNIE THE KING COLEMAN)and not only that, but Jay and Ronnie brought CHARISMA,CHARACTER,FUN EXCITEMENT to the sport!! I.E. They KNEW HOW to SELL the sport of bodybuilding Phil heath and the bodybuilders of his era(and unfortunately TODAY) LACK or JUST STRAIGHT UP have NONE of what the bodybuilders of thr GOLDEN ERA,80'S,90'S and going into the early 2000s had..... ALL THE ABOVE
Hey mate thanks for the comment. Yes, knowing how to sell the sport was key. Phil, for all his talent, seemed detached from the "business of bodybuilding" and was in a way, like Dorian in that respect that he detached himself from the wider promotion of the sport..he seems more charismatic and personable now than when he was Mr Olympia.
For moment and for only a moment I actually felt sorry for Heath being a bodybuilder drowning in social media landscape he could not comprehend. Also being the Poster boy for an age of Bodybuilding that generally sickens people. He is the natural lighting rod for that disgust. Then I returned to my senses and remembered his innate arrogance and lack of humility or charisma. It demonstrates your even handling of the divisive Heath. Why didn't he go into Basketball? Even a guy on the bench probably earns more than a Mr Olympia does and has more fans.
I think Heath's ego could never stand being benched or playing second fiddle to anyone, hence the abandonment of the basketball career and fortuitous "discovery" of Bodybuilding. What do you think of Heath these days? His intelligence and articulate commentary and participation on various talk shows etc has been impressive and maybe endearing to a whole subset of former disgruntled fans who may even now, look back on his era with some rose tinted nostalgia compared to today's $hit-show

I lost all interest in the Olympia and bb comps after the 90's! Thanks for the doco rundown Shawn because i would never have watched it!
I bailed shortly before, but I understand the sentiment. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks always Ditto.

His physique in 2011-2014 was phenomenal… he just couldn’t make anyone like him;)
Great vid …as always

My wife - a former ballet dancer that cannot stand bodybuilding - was very impressed by this video.
The Phil Heath movie or the review?
@@carvedouttastone The review

I'm thinking Huberman's recent scandal and how he said nothing, did nothing and left the PR team to make it become yesterday's news. Cheers Marc!

Heath is gifted but wonder where would he be without Jay?

Jay was boring as hell too
Agreed 💯. He's discovered some personality since retirement though

Ronnie is the goat
One of the best - will tackle a video on him someday too
