Carnival Glory strikes Carnival Legend in Cozumel, Mexico

- Carnival Cruise Line is assessing damage to two of its ships that collided Friday morning in Cozumel, Mexico.
Videos posted on social media showed the Carnival Glory crashing into the Carnival Legend as it maneuvered to dock.
In response to questions on Twitter, Carnival tweeted that it is assessing the damage to both ships. The company said there has been one minor injury reported from a Carnival Glory guest hurt while they evacuated from the dining room.
Carnival said in a statement that the Carnival Glory was maneuvering to dock when it collided with the Carnival Legend, which was already alongside.

I was at breakfast on the Legend and I remember looking out at the Glory thinking they were really close to us as they were docking. I told my son, they do this stuff all the time, they'd never hit us. Next thing we know the whole ship shudders and our cruise director comes on to announce they bumped us. Lots of crew members were taking photos. You know it's something crazy when most of the crew is snapping pics. They've seen it all, but this was new.
I think you are mixing them up. Glory got gored by the Legend.

I was in Glory in 2014, I wasn’t there. Did they have to block those areas?
@@coinsteelelite Glory did have to spend some extra time in Cozumel to cover the hole in their ship before they could sail. I believe it was mostly the back corner of their MDR that was affected. It was blocked off by a makeshift wall from what I understand. I'm sure someone on the Glory posted pictures somewhere.

We were on a NCL ship around this time and we were supposed to go into Cozumel around the same time. We saw Carnival heading into Cozumel after we attempted and we are so glad we didnt dock. We heard the news straight after on our ship and we are so glad that our Captain decided to just head back to sea.

It's not carnival's fault. It's the pilot that steers and helps moore the ship into the dock and the pilot was being stupid and didn't see a 110,000 ton ship behind him

@@lukeson8934 on the costa Concordia the helms man didn't listen to the captain and then the captain did not follow regulations. For this incident, the PILOT steers the ship in to the port which means that the pilot did not watch his back and collided with the carnival legend keep in mind that during docking, the captain is not in control of steering or mooring the ship

I was on carnival legend when this happened. Actually sort of interesting, but probably very scary + startling for carnival glory passengers.

I was on a Royal ship that was coming the next day and I heard about it happening on the ship one of my friends said we got the news from our captain.
And i was just chilling in the titanic wreck.
@@AshleyThompson-to5km i went on it right after the incident happened and its huge. there is a part in the center of the boat, its a cafe, you can walk to the edge of a railing at the top of the boat, there are like 20 stories below you, and you can go to the fancy cafe by walking up glass stairs. its absolutely beautiful and HUGE. enjoy your boat! if you look at the tip of the hull it might still have the dents it did when i went lol. it doesnt affect the boat.
Imagine having the room right below and not knowing what’s going on. How scary!

This is pretty much the cruise industry. Except it's also a hotel where the food had been on board for weeks, you won't be able to stand up properly in rough weather and you can't go for more than a 500m walk without going in circles...
Oh and it pollutes something like as much as an entire city's worth of motor traffic.

Last week I was on the glory and went to explore where this happened. Seemed like there was a small space where it wasn't fully fixed. Aside from that, the glory was really fun, we were docked that close next to the Ruby Princess.
I was on Pogoria in Genoa moored next to Diamond Valletta and had 4 hour watch between 0-4 am and oh.... THAT was fun xD
This isn't the first time Legend has had an accident report filed in Cozomel due to high winds, but did the Glory clip its nose or high winds again?!
Well legend had a crash 10 years ago with royal Caribbean they collided to them and this time the glory is at fault

In reply to James Ds comments, it is assumed the camera man was filming the two ships and just by chance noticed the presumed probable collision hence zooming in on the area of impact.

I am surprised that this doesn't happen more often. Most of these Mexican cruise ship destinations are in old harbors, built for traditional, small fishing boats, close to the center of town. It amazes me that you can dock one single cruise ship into some of these harbors and yet in peak season you often see two or three squeezed in. Make no mistake, this is about money. Neither cruise line nor city wants to spend the money on dedicated, new, purpose built, out of town facilities and the Mexican towns want to extract maximum income by dropping the tourists off as close to the city center as possible.
In cabo they required the ship to anchor off into the bay and tender passengers into the port
It's highly desirable as a passenger to be docked close to the city center. I've just endured a couple of 2+ hour journeys into town and they suck. Then we stopped in Hong Kong - smack in the middle of the city, and walkable to everything; wonderful!

Lee Kh no good weather, read the investigation report. Although it looks sunny it doesnt necessarily mean that there is no wind and since those massive ships are sensitive to the wind (especially when manoeuvring) it played a big factor contributing to this incident. However, an incident or disaster always happens because there are multiple factors involved. But in this case, the wind was definitely an important factor contributing to this incident.

My wife and I have been on board these monsters. They all have similar port schedules. It does get crowded. These things are so big and heavy. But on the open sea, nice ride. I hope no one was in one those expensive stateroom suites.

I never heard a loud collision warning horn from either vessel before the crash. Fewer lawyers involved since it was Carnival vs Carnival. Oops, the horn comes about 30 seconds after the collision. Even moving very slowly, 100,000 tons can do a LOT of damage.
The horn came from oasis of the seas. We were blowing the horn to sound that their ship "Carnival Glory" is to close to us "Oasis of the Seas" to prevent them from colliding into us.

@@mbpl2987 its okay. I know youre not trying to be rude. Normally with the ships when there is an occurance of a near collision they sound the horns of the vessel. Strange? I know but its to give an alert that you are close by with this the pilots for the docks also contact the ships radio and etc. Also fun fact when a ship is docked and there are high winds a code is sounded throught the ship to alert the crew of possible collision to pier and etc.
Sometimes you have to work on these ships to understand the sounds that are used to different codes. Tbh it may sound like it doesnt make sense to someone from the outside.

That's a big dining area where they serve breakfast. Only one person was injured in this whole incident.
I cruised on the Glory last June.Those big windows that got crushed are in the two story Aft dinning room. They would have only been use the lower floor for breakfast service at the time of the accident.
