It’s time for an almighty German showdown!
We’ve got Mat in the new Audi S5, and he’s lining up against the new Mercedes-AMG C64 and the BMW M340i! The question is, does the all-new Audi have enough power to propel itself to victory? Let’s take a closer look at the stats.
Starting with the S5, it’s powered by a 3-litre turbocharged V6 that can put down 367hp and 550Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed automatic gearbox, and the car weighs in a t 1,950kg. As new, the Audi costs around £69,000.
Alongside him, we have the new AMG C43. This houses a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine under the bonnet, and this produces 435hp and 500Nm. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,810kg. It’s slightly cheaper than the Audi, coming in at £67,500.
Then finally we have the BMW. It’s the pre-facelift edition of the M340i, but the power stats are the same as the latest edition, so its 3-litre turbocharged V6 delivers 337hp and 500Nm. Power is delivered to all four wheels via an 8-speed auto, and it’s the lightest car here, weighing in at 1,670kg. If you’re looking to buy the latest edition, it’ll cost around £60,000.
So the AMG has the most power, but will it be able to take down its rivals? There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

I traded in my 18 S4 for a 20' M340i, my stage 1 S4 ran 12.1 1/4 and couldn't do better than 28 mpg on the highway. My M340i ran 12.3 bone stock and gets 34-35mpg on the highway I get over 500 miles on one tank on the highway!

@MartijnvanderHage I love it, a couple of months ago I added an intake ,turbo inlet pipe ,turbo inlet, downpipe, lowering springs and stage 2 ecu and tcu tune. Such a great car.
the thing with this generation engines (and transmission) is that they can be really efficient when you drive "normal" , but if you want to go .... it can really go and it can get thirsty haha.
I have a 2020 M340i and my family is sick of me constantly telling them how much I still love it. Never thought I’d hang onto a car this long.

You picked a spectacular moment in time to jump on. They had always been more for the theatrics and feel than any lap time or numbers game. But they've certainly dropped that chasing the numbers in recent years and I don't think they're better for it.

I own a M340i touring since three years and drove 80'000km with it. I can confirm, its just perfect. I will drive it for many more years!
I own a touring too. I got it delivered in 2023 october, 30.000kms with it. I love it.
80k km down isn't anything special. Report back at 150k km and 200k km.

@@mcFourbE The statistics on reliability of the German TÜV tell a different story. If you take proper care of your car, perform the required oil changes, inspections and so on you'll enjoy it for a long time. Unfortunately, there're plenty of people who neglect these things and then act surprised when the car eventually has issues. Instead of blaming themselves and their lack of care, they just pin it on the car.

And you can tune these things up and do basic bolt ons to make 600 horsepower reliably. The B58 is a great engine! And they still make these in a manual. Can't say that for Benz or Audi.

You can have good peak horsepower, like the Mercedes does at 6750 rpm, meanwhile the BMW has its peak horsepower from 5500-6500rpm and 500Nm of torque from 1850-5000rpm. The power and torque band is enormous.
I‘ve driven a B58 lots of times. It just feels mighty and super relaxed while out performing its competition.
And with next to no money you‘ll make safe and sound 700hp from that engine.

Exactly right! I dynoed my Stock M340i, the torque is almost always at its peak! Btw it did 385.58hp on the wheels! Peak torque was 408 ft.lb! Completely stock

It's all thanks to the closed deck block. It's super stable and you can just use the power without a worry in the world.

None of these cars are sports cars just depends how one feels about diesel power, but if anything is going to convert one's opinion of diesel its the best diesel engine and gearbox combination ever put in a car.
Got a 21 plate M340i in September last year, it is one heck of a machine. That engine is effortless, but the car is also very smooth and the boot is huge. Forget hot hatches, I've had the Golf R, Cupra Formentor 310bhp, this M340i is in a diff league. And this older version has physical buttons, so nice

The C43 weighs over 1.8 tonnes. That holds it back.
Power to weight ratio at play
Given the difference in weight, power and torque between the M340i (374hp, 500Nm, 1670kg) and the S5 (367hp, 550Nm, 1950kg), their relative performance made sense. The Merc, however, was DISAPPOINTING! 435hp, 500Nm and 1810kg, yet it couldn't hold a candle to the BMW at the top end - despite having an extra 61hp - and got blitzed on launch by the Audi that's 140kg heavier! It didn't even beat the BMW in the 1/2 mile rolling race 💀

Transmission was the letdown. Can’t compete with the king - ZF 8 speed.

Im pretty sure all M340i have gen 2 b58 with the mild hybrid. I have a 2019 X3 M40i and it has the gen one, but i believe even the earliest M340i have the mild hybrid.
@ In the US, the 2019 and 2020 M340i didn’t have the 48v mild hybrid. It was introduced in the 2021 MY with the B58TU. The 2025 LCI2 now has the B58TU2 with a further refined 48v mild hybrid.

Mercedes never cared about straight line speed. When they do focus on performance for the track records or pro competition, then they do dominate, but for their production vehicles, i honestly think they dont care. I know the new amg gt63 se is fast as hell, and the new c63 4 cylinder also. I do hate their new engines and shifting though.

@LB-sh7qt yeah I had a crash as well and boy did the bimmer save my life. One of the top safety experts in the industry had a crash in his 5 series and described the car as having been built like a tank.
As a 2022 SQ5 owner, I can totally forgive being a little slower than its contemporary X3 m40i. I knew the X3 was a little quicker when I bought the SQ5. SQ5 was just a bit better as an everyday driver with the air suspension, etc. However, both Mercedes and Audi knew exactly what the B58 was capable of. They could benchmark it. Doesn't matter if BMW way under rate it. It's unforgivable that the brand new S5 and c43's get walked by a M340i thats been around for half a decade. They knew the benchmark. They chose to underperform.
I was looking to lease the SQ5 when I was shopping around. I went on Turo and drove the GLC43 22 model, SQ5 , never once test driven the x3 but drove the m340 and love it.. now I lease a 23 x3 M40. I love it. It’s a great daily as well. I did enjoy the SQ5. It’s really nice. Really all of them are nice in their own ways. U didn’t go wrong. But I will always be a bmw fan boy tho 😉 lol

i love the m340i but these 2020+ m340i are holding value too well. they should be much cheaper by now. I dont want to pay 45k for a 4 yr old 2020 BMW that will drop off cliff in value in a few years. for 45k you can get a 2020-2021 m550i, 840i , C63 amg, E53 amg. Hell even the 540i M sport is a better deal then m340i and its practically the same thing. those cars will drop off a cliff too but original sticker was higher so getting more for your money. I would choose the E53 AMG Coupe or 540i msport.

Just for information: If the higher weight is compensated by proportionally stronger brakes, the mass of the car does not affect braking distance. The theoretical braking formula is:
s= v^2/(2*μ⋅g)
where v is velocity, μ is tire grip, and g is gravitational acceleration. In reality, lighter cars often brake better because they generate less heat in the brakes, have less front-end dive due to suspension, which improves brake force distribution, and experience less tire deformation and grip loss due to overheating.
Theoretically, Mat is right in saying that a higher weight allows for greater maximum braking force:
Fbrake = μ⋅m⋅g
since the increased mass presses the tires harder onto the road.
However, this is counteracted by the law of inertia, which determines how much energy needs to be dissipated:
Ekin= (1/2)*m*v^2
In the theoretical braking distance, mass no longer plays a role-only tire grip matters. This means that, in theory, ignoring factors like tire deformation, grip limits, brake force distribution (which could be adjusted with a stiffer suspension), and heat buildup (which could be managed with better cooling), a 1,600 kg BMW 3 Series would have the same braking distance as a 3,000 kg BMW 3 Series with proportionally stronger and better brakes.

It's like the designers (or maybe it was the accountants) said, "Hey, here's a great idea: let's turn one of the most stylish cars in the world into a lackluster family sedan! We'll soften everything to make it look anemic, replace real buttons and switches with digital everything, because our customers hate driver-centered cars, and while we're at it, let's give it less power!" Bloody hell.

The S5 is heavier because of the mechanical Torsten differential which weights a lot but is more capable than xdrive and 4matic on slippery surfaces

Best part of the M340 is you can do a couple cheap mods and now instead of beating C43s and S5s you’ll be beating C63AMGs and RS7s
The mods needed to run c63s and rs7s of similar years are by no means cheap
@ downpipe and tune is very cheap and you’re running with c63s. Upgrade fueling and you’re running with the rs7. I spent $7k on a big turbo and port injection and now I’m running with 911 turbos
@ your still losing tho with only a dp and tune.(unless your tuned by Mike botti😎) Yea big turbo upgrade and port then your gapping amgs and rs’s all day, but with a tune and (maybe) upgraded clutch your lookin at possibly more than 10-11k for dp, tune, turbos or a single turbo kit.
@@chrisrides2203A tune and DP have the M340i running faster 60-130 times than a stock RS7, so that's entirely correct. If you upgrade the turbos and fueling, it will beat a Plaid.

i was a fan of the c43 over the m340i because of the sound but merc keeps disappointing, I switched. That b58 is just good and reliable
If a slightly slower quarter mile within user error hurts your brand loyalty maybe you need to re-evaluate.
It seems to me to be a decent car. Not that I drive that fast on the highway or do any racing, but it does seem to perform quite well. I just love when a merc tags along with a driver that isn't afraid to touch the pedal or can't afford the gasoline. It is always a little giggle when a merc, bmw and audi tag along and just plow the teslas and other battery shit out of the way, and just blast away together.

- even the power band of a turbo engine can vary greatly
- I read another comment stating the power band of the Merc has peak power arriving close to the red line, whereas the M340i has a nice even power band from relatively low rpm. Now, such a power band is very relevant compared to one close to the red line. It means the BMW is putting down more power across a broader rev range

and on topic: the power to weight ratio of the c43 does NOT show itself in practice. It's a paper tiger and I suspect on top of the slow shifts Sam mentioned, I imagine it needs a big spool from the turbo and reliant on it for power, and it shows in the lag

Mine is in the £55k ish M3/RS4 time. Price inflation is what’s killing the industry. £70for an S5 is beyond most and only brings huge depreciation once 3 year finance deals are up.
I can remember in early 00s joshing a mate who was going to spend £30k on a 4 cylinder C Class. Seemed ridiculous. Now…market for these car new is doomed.
