I grew up in Jonesboro and was 9 years old during the summer of filming. It was a big deal having Burt in town making a movie. So many of those locations bring back so many fond memories from my childhood and my hometown. I went to see the movie at the Jonesboro Twin theater that was just north of the National Pride car wash. Wayne's on Main St was a regular stop on the days I would walk home from school. A little jingle in my pocket meant I could stop and get some candy. I miss those days...

I have the collectors set of Smokey And The Bandit on DVD. I can never get bored of watching it and it brings back childhood memories when I was 10 years old when it came out on May 27, 1977

      Same age.
Piled into the trunk of a car in the summer of 77 to get into the movie at a drive-in theater in Oceanside, California.
47 years old for the movie in a few weeks.
I also notice the 1976 stuff.
Hopefully 250 in 2026 is just as big.

I remember wanting the 6.6 Trans Am as a kid, as long as it wasnt the White/Blue one, because I was a dumb ass as a kid, but now, Id take it in a second. What an Epic movie with language in it, that today would make some teens cry. The 70s/80s..Greatest time ever.

Most of the last chase scenes on the highway were done on Georgia 400 North through Forsyth County. McFarland Road exit, GA 20 exit, Webb Bridge Road, etc were key points in the chase convoy scenes. This was long before it was all developed at the exits. Now it's pretty much solid development from Atlanta up to the mountains 45 years later, hardly recognizable.

Great video for sure. A quick fact on the Bandit's last name. Burt grew up in Riviera Beach, FL and back in the 30's and 40's a large group of Bahamian Families from Long Island, BS relocated there and took on jobs fishing, etc. and were called "conchs". Family names included Knowles, Pinder, and...Darville. Burt grew up with a guy named Reedith Darville and supposedly was a tough SOB so that's the guy Burt named the Bandit after. On another note I do know some of the filming locations for Smokey II since my dad was friends with Burt around that time and I have some artifacts from the shoot.

I lived in a town just north of the Jupiter area of South Florida called Hobe Sound. I lived there for about 15 years. I had the pleasure of meeting Burt in the mid 90's while working as an electrician on a house being built right next to his estate in the Jupiter- Tequesta area on the Intercoastal Waterway. He was very nice and joked with us alot during construction, saying he was gonna have to charge us admission for looking at his property. LOL!!!! His parents had a ranch in the Jupiter farms area west of town and use to do tours regularly. He also started a resturant in Jupiter called R.J. Gators that specialized in Gator Tail!!! He also designed an built the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theater in Jupiter, Fla. They did Broadway type plays and provided training for up and coming actors and actresses. You mentioned some names in your post of local families. One of them sticks in my mind- Pinder. They owned a local fish market and restaurant/bar.

Your video brings back a lot of memories. I believe Billy Bob Thornton said, " if you're from the South, Smokey and the Bandit is a documentary".
Any idea where that welcome to Texas roadside sign is located? Anyone?

    Great work guys, fantastic.
Oddly enough, watching this video makes me think about the original American explorers and land surveyors like Lewis and Clark who were canoeing down all of those little streams and recording everything including new types of plant and animal life as they went.
Camping every night, fighting off fleas, ticks, and malaria while putting in 18-hour days, I'll bet those boys wished they had a trailer full of beer 🍻!
I know I sure as hell would...

Sheriff Buford T. Justice should mention catching a flight to Winnipeg. R.I.P Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason, Jerry Reed, Pat McCormick. Sally Field, Paul Williams are still with us. Thank you for posting this interesting program. Interesting fact about the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is the black and gold edition was a carryover of the 1976 Golden Anniversary edition to celebrate Pontiac. This color scheme was used on the Capri II and the Johnny Player Lotus Formula One race car.

I grew up eating at the old hickory house in forrest Park where they filmed the movie. I also watch them blow up the wooden roller coaster at lakewood fairgrounds. Fun times as a kid.

Awesome. Jackie Gleason was great in this. As a dog owner, Fred's swimming scene was hilarious! I can relate lol.

Cool you guys would come down here to see the locations. I live about 12 miles from the ball park where the Trans Am jumped out into the football game. My neighbor was a cheerleader extra. I own a black 1977 Special Edition Trans Am. You know here in Georgia we consider Smokey and the Bandit a documentary!

Australia here! I was watching 'smokey '(for the umpteenth time!) one evening, when my GF actually asked me to marry her. Naturally i said YES! and its 2nd time for both of us. We were married 2 weeks ago and when we were presented as husband and wife... i had East Bound and Down played. Everyone knew our story and it just fitted so well!!
