9:24 so true I can’t tell you how many fish I have caught by drunk people swimming in the lake as they are apologizing claiming “sorry were swimming you probably won’t catch a fish right here… oMg he just caught one” 😂 👏🏿
I don't often comment on videos, but for goodness sake, please do keep with this series. Like you said, it's obvious information, but it sets in much more when you hear it from someone else. Thanks for the awesome material.
Dynamite content, Matt! This stuff really helps us beginners to get a clue. These items are much more important than having the best and most expensive lure on the market. Thanks for having a heart for us beginners to take the time to help us learn. Maybe some others are late comers to this sport; maybe some came without a boat; maybe some without $900.00 rods and reels, and maybe they, as I do, just want to be the best bass angler they can be in the years they have left. Last year I fished all winter whenever the water was soft, and confined to the bank, without any real success. I didn't even have hand warmers at that time. I'm doing it again this year, but I am planning to catch something this year. Sorry for the rank! I love your videos. They inspire me!
this means a lot to me. truly the reason I am making videos. I love the sport and want to share it with others and help them to catch a few extra fish!
All great tips thanks Matt! Here’s a favorite quote from Henry Ford that correlate’s to confidence. “Believe you can or believe you can’t either way you will be right!”
To your point on bait recommendations l’ve come to despise those “top five baits for the month videos” The content you and Randy and Jonny are putting out I believe is the best information on RUclips. Although you guys have sponsors I don’t ever feel like I am watching an infomercial like I do with others.
Awesome Thank you! top 5 for a month never made sense to me. baits for march in alabama are different baits for march in wisconsin. makes a lot more sense to talk about top 5 baits for a specific season IMO
I do a lot of kayak river fishing and I studied long and hard trying to decide which side of the bank to fish depending on current flow, inside bends versus outside bends, and most of all, debating whether to fish the sunny or shady side. Most of my buddies fish the shady bank and I always fish the shade pockets on the sunny side for the exact reason you mentioned. It made me poke my chest out a bit to hear you say it.... I'm actually thinking more logically to better improve my success like a true professional fisherman. .. better yet, thinking like professional Angler Matt Stefen! Please keep sharing these tips..... your channel is the absolute best there is!!! 👍🏻
I never quite thought about the boats going by stirring up the fish. I did have a kayaker go between me and the bank where I was fishing this summer. That wasn't very nice. As far as trying new bait. Heck, everything has been pretty new this year. Mostly because of you I really worked on jigs. Now I would hardly go out without one tied on. LOL. These videos and tips have really helped me. Appreciate it!
Thanks I like your tips and reminders. When you have been fishing as long as I have you tend to forget some of them. Also I have boxes of baits that never see daylight any longer. For example I have fished jerkbaits for years and my favorites were Rapala minnows, Bomber long A's and now I have replaced using them with Megabass 110's, Berkeley Stunna and Shimano's. I'm always going through my tackle boxes moving baits out and replacing with something new, interesting and sometimes better. Not saying that the older baits are not still good, many are. For instance the old Bomber Speed Shad. If you are fishing Buggs Island Lake in the spring it's hard to beat. I like your idea of fishing the sunny banks vs. the shady banks. Well back to tackle organization. Thanks again. Take care.
The fishing shady spot on sunny side bank is genius, my boy just genius!!!!! Very good tip matt thanks, there all 10 good tips so far, but really like this one.
This video should have came out prior to my last Tackle Warehouse order...lol... I love boat traffic areas/points on the lake I fish... stirred up water/Mud lines. Great stuff Matt.
Great tips Matt. Love your calm, educational presentation. Funny, I can tune in to Mike I, but can only listen to a couple at a time! LOL But….I can listen to your channel, daily. Thanks man. Keep it coming!!! Good stuff
Your right about baits, the all powerful a-rig has been the hardest lure for me to try to catch a bass on. Too many techniques these days that makes fishing complicated and confusing.
Matt this is awesome content, you could do these forever. These tips teach me new stuff and validates things I have already done. Awesome stuff please keep em coming!
Something about the bird thing that a lot of ppl over look is that their absence tells you as much as their presence. I live in an area where we have a lot of smaller lakes- each county has a county lake and then usually a few other private lakes opened to the public- and if you want to know which lakes are good to fish- look for the birds. We have several lakes where you never see a Herron, crane, king fisher, nothing- and I can't get bit in these places to save my life. On the other hand- the swamps, rivers, sloughs, etc. are covered up in Blue Herron, cranes, etc.- and they're great places to catch a bass. There are bass in the lakes where you don't see birds but they're hard to catch and usually pretty small if you do- they don't look healthy. I think birds are an indicator that the whole eco system in a body of water is relatively healthy.
Second viewing of this one. I love the sunny side isolated shade idea. Thanks for pointing that out. Good luck on Rayburn Matt. Hope you have a PB limit! 👍🏼🎣
Yep everything he said. Always amazed at how the tackle industry can cloud all 10 of those tips over with their vaudeville act...... SMH. Keep up the good work the fishing industry needs more folks like you. Thanks for the vid.
Yes indeed more of these kinds of video. I love when people come around cuz I was told they will scare the fish. I won't move anymore thanks for the tips
You got my attention with that 30 acre crawler lmao was hoping it was gonna be in video but still gave good info and agree with a lot of what u said but. Maybe if use pics like that make it like a bonus addition to the end of the video. That would be cool or maybe make a members only video that shows that bait and talks about in depth.
Wow Matt. I felt like you were pointing to me with all the bait buying. Lol. When I started getting serious about fishing I researched all the baits and I was buying a lot of different types of baits. I am very comfortable with a couple of them, but I want to get more experience with some of those baits I bought. I know to also take the baits I am comfortable with but hopefully I can learn how to properly cast and reel some of these baits. Once I have a lot more experience then I will decide what baits I love and hate. I appreciate your advice. I learned a lot. Thanks Matt.
Matt it'd be really cool if you would do a five things you need to know about structures like one video could be five things you need to know about fishing points five things you need to know about fishing saddles five things you need to know about fishing bluff walls five things you need to know about fishing humps etc etc Jim from the bridgeford team did something that I've not seen a lot of RUclipsrs do and it's an excellent teaching tool in his last video he did one on fishing saddles and he used a marker board and actually illustrated what he was talking about just a suggestion I think that would be awesome if you Incorporated one into your five things you need to know if you do a structure series. As always tight lines and much love from Kansas.
My pegboard..."Is Not Worthy"...I always love a tackle organization vid, and want to see how you organize your wall. Happy New Year, keep up the good work.
I like to fish a Sunny point to where I can drop a crossed it from inside of a cove where I can either find structure on that point or a broken tree preferably put where I Fisher liberty reservoir in Maryland a lot of the things that you speak about 80% of it applies to how I fish but just need to learn more techniques on different baits, and how to fine where did the fish or mostly going to be hiding waiting on the bait fish on the points!? Either way your advice from your experience and what you see makes you a great angler, I know the world works around money and a lot of people do these channels to boost their money Makin abilities and teaching techniques but you’re more like the teacher in the classroom it’s really awesome what you’re doing, all you guys!!!!!!!
Good Evening Matt Stefan, I recently started watching your video's, I am fasinateded with your diolog. My son and I go freak wently except for Winter! (We live in Michigan. LOL!) Very Cold. You have a diverse comperehension of ALL the Specise. Please Keep Making These Very Interesting Vedio"s! :-) Keep A Tight Line! LOL! Sincerely, Carl J. Gwizdala. :-)
Thanks for these great tips!!👊🏻 Keep them coming!!!👍🏻 I remember last year either Edwin Evers or Ott DeFoe had someone come thru caught some fish then they themselves started their boat and made a few circles around. It was amazing!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
On my lake I watch/follow the loons, especially when their feeding their chicks! You can see the parents passing small fish from beak to beak. Just to help, I occasionally tossed them a rock bass. On the other hand you forgot to mention cows! We were prefishing an event and there were a number cows standing in a patch of lily pads stirring up the water...It was a herd of living docks! With the deeper ones I was using the "bumping the stump" technique. The shallower ones I was skipping a fluke under their bellies. Believe it or not we were catching keepers! Unfortunately they weren't there on tournament day. Once in a lifetime!!!
That's a great video. I always fish a northwest side of a lake in the morning in spring. The other tips will be very helpful for next year also. Thanks
Always enjoy em! You keep make’n em.. I’ll keep sending em to my brothers and friends that fish too. Greatly appreciated info. Dude, you got other pro’s talking about your RUclips Channel too!
Thanks Matt... I have to keep in mind that my favorite bait or the one I have the most confidention in was nothing until I started.. Meaning that until I try other baits I'll have only one, and trying new ones might lead me to a new favorite or one I have more confidence in .. I guess I'm always looking for a new favorite... The Frye Guy..
Haha! Never heard of it! Just kidding I can do one! I might have to call in my dad the Tiger Cat hammer to give up some of his juice as well for that one.
That video was AWESOME! Just wanna give a huge thank you for this channel. You hit the nail on the head with the confidence rule. I've experienced things that confidence can be the only explanation and it just baffles me how that works. Nonetheless it has to be true!
Great video. Hey I've been looking up info on smallmouth spawn and habitats. I can't find much on just smallmouth. It's always largemouth. I would like to no the differences between smallmouth an largemouth. Just a suggestion.
Matt, I thought you might get a kick out of this: My wife said, "If your tackle area gets as bad as his (Matt's), it will be time for an intervention!" This is coming from a woman that owns nearly 100 pairs of shoes! Thank you for the tips. I appreciate it!
Man I love these! Makes so much sense and your tips make me really excited about getting out there this summer with a head full of new knowledge. Thanks man and I can’t wait till the next one
Great tips. I have a question regarding following birds. I fish very clear weedy lakes in central Minnesota. Many times I will see loons and gulls feeding out in the basin of the lake on baitfish. In some cases they are not relating to the weed line at all, just over the basin. It could be 50 to 100ft deep out there...is that a swimbait, spoon, crankbait bite? How do you target and stay on those open water bait chasing fish. No forward facing sonar to use here....
You can mark them with sonar if you drive around. most likely those are schooling fish following shiners, minnows, or perch balls. Very hard to find without the right equipment but can be excellent fishing. Although its usually a here today gone tomorrow approach.
I’ve been bass fishing for five years now, last year I got a HDS7 Lawrence, and listening to you and trying to understand to be able to fish my way with your teaching method, am I going wrong by switching up the way I fish? You make me unafraid of throwing a swimming jig I’m just confused now about my breadline of 50 pounds on my Tutuila Diawa 8-1 I use for my swim beats to try to get the fish active and this past year I didn’t do too good so I’m definitely putting a depth finder on for the first time in five years of fishing I hope it’s steps my game up along with your techniques thank you, sorry for such a long message
Awesome stuff, these really help people. I have a question do bass, like if you catch a big bass on a certain log or structure does that bass generally stay in that place or do bass just go all over a body of water all the time?
Thanks Matt great information! Do you have California delta breakdown? It’s been a struggle my last couple of times this and last month. Sunny vis 1-2 feet. Only been fishing delta 3 months
Anglers craving to own baits is the bread and butter of the bait making companies. But every angler will have to learn and master the bait. Every time I make the choice if I'll buy a new bait I think "Do I already have something in my baitbox that probably rather use in the same situation", and most of the time I don't buy it. I donät want a ton of baits, I want the right baits.
I just had one of those “Aaa Haaa” moments…..fish the sunny bank and the pick off the shady spots. 🤦🏻♂️ I’ve always fished the shady side because I know that “fish don’t have eyelids “ and “keep your shadow behind you “.
Matt outstanding very helpful.thank you what do you think about bank fishing early morning and you get to the spot you want to fish and their are a couple hundred geese on the water close to the bank? When I head down they will slowly swim off what are your thoughts on this? Do you think this affects the fishing?
It’s not “confidence” it’s “competence”. Substitute the word competence into everything you just said and see how it reads. It’s about what YOU as an individual fisherman are good at fishing effectively. And what you have a knack for. There’s a 100 ways to catch the same fish. Do what you know you are good at and what is productive for you.
Great advice again, Matt! You're spot on with motor wash creating bites. I encourage folks to go watch Ote Defoe win the event on Lake Athens in 2020. He begged boats to go by him so they would stir up the bite. Love your channel and all of the great advice.
I always look for animal activity on the banks. It doesn't seem to work 100% of the time. Seeing squirrels, deer roaming doesn't appear to predict actively feeding bass. Common on the lake to see herons and I always will fish that bank.
Confidence baits are as you say. I do think confidence baits should mean you understand the whys and the hows. That said, it is wise to also break down other's confidence baits without trying to be biased so that in doing so, you are biased. Hence, the recommended try or closer examination of other ideas. Best to run experiments, just terrible on your wallet and time. Often time people lack understanding and you go down that rabbit hole with them. Some of us are able to crawl out and some are buried in it. Often time these rabbit holes are not life-threatening or have dire consequences and we just pretend we're all normal. Sometimes we get ostracized and hated for not taking shelter in that rabbit hole that they consider the norm whether or not we are correct. Say they want us to identify where the birds gather when fishing. Well, today the flocks of birds were just nuisance and not indicative of anything productive, offering only to you questions like why are there so many birds and do people really just drink bird poop water?
I liked the information but I don't likethe use of the crawler bait in picture to lure me in and than no mention of the bait or anything to do with it whatsoever
@@MattStefanFishing I know. Im Completely joking . Awesome advice though. Thanks you for all the advice. Just picked up fishing again last summer. Caught some quality bass but the quantity was very low. I'm in northwest Indiana and there aren't many places out here. However, after your advice I may now have 3
@@michaelkelley4708 if you are anywhere close to Lake Maxincuckee there is a beach on the north end that was dynamite in the afternoon during summer days when the swimmers went home
Thanks Matt! I actually now have a “Matt Stefan” section in my notes on my phone. I write in so many of your tips to use next year. Keep ‘em coming.

Thanks for sharing. Practice is what makes perfect. just need to figure out what your strong suits are and branch off from that.
Awesome stuff, these really help people. I have a question do bass, like if you catch a big bass on a certain log or structure does that bass generally stay in that place or do bass just go all over a body of water all the time?
i think fish have a home range and will use a piece of structure frequently but that doesnt mean they dont move around
Thanks Matt great information! Do you have California delta breakdown? It’s been a struggle my last couple of times this and last month. Sunny vis 1-2 feet. Only been fishing delta 3 months
not yet, but i just completed an oroville, shasta, clear lake and berryessa. they should be up shortly
Anglers craving to own baits is the bread and butter of the bait making companies. But every angler will have to learn and master the bait. Every time I make the choice if I'll buy a new bait I think "Do I already have something in my baitbox that probably rather use in the same situation", and most of the time I don't buy it. I donät want a ton of baits, I want the right baits.
thats a good question to ask yourself!
Great tips Matt, What Lure is that is the pic ?
its a prototype fish30acre. very cool crawler bait!
Yup. Sometimes the prop. Hits and injuries small fish. Too. Fish learn that.
Thanks for sharing
Matt? What is the bait in the video
display/description?
prototype fish 30scre creeper
I just had one of those “Aaa Haaa” moments…..fish the sunny bank and the pick off the shady spots. 🤦🏻♂️ I’ve always fished the shady side because I know that “fish don’t have eyelids “ and “keep your shadow behind you “.
awesome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you. What are your top 3-5 confidence baits?
check this video out that i did ruclips.net/video/6DCdROJO9GI/видео.html
@@MattStefanFishing Agree. Thank you. Great stuff. If I could have 5, I would throw in a medium crank bait and a buzzbait. Good luck this year.
Matt outstanding very helpful.thank you what do you think about bank fishing early morning and you get to the spot you want to fish and their are a couple hundred geese on the water close to the bank? When I head down they will slowly swim off what are your thoughts on this? Do you think this affects the fishing?
That many geese is not a great thing, but I dont think it takes long for things to settle down after they leave.
@@MattStefanFishing thanks again I was thinking the same
It’s not “confidence” it’s “competence”. Substitute the word competence into everything you just said and see how it reads.
It’s about what YOU as an individual fisherman are good at fishing effectively. And what you have a knack for. There’s a 100 ways to catch the same fish. Do what you know you are good at and what is productive for you.
i would say they go hand in hand.
@@MattStefanFishing totally
Great advice again, Matt! You're spot on with motor wash creating bites. I encourage folks to go watch Ote Defoe win the event on Lake Athens in 2020. He begged boats to go by him so they would stir up the bite. Love your channel and all of the great advice.
Ive seen it first hand and its crazy how good a prop wash bite can be
What is the difference between a Berkley Stuna 112 and a Stuna 112+1?
+1 runs a little deeper
I always look for animal activity on the banks. It doesn't seem to work 100% of the time. Seeing squirrels, deer roaming doesn't appear to predict actively feeding bass. Common on the lake to see herons and I always will fish that bank.
thanks for watching!
I want to see more of how you wake up your soft plastics can I see how you do that please thank you
wake up?
Well, today the flocks of birds were just nuisance and not indicative of anything productive, offering only to you questions like why are there so many birds and do people really just drink bird poop water?
thanks for watching!
If you have a beach with 20 kids playing, Steven Spielberg will make the movie Jaws.
haha
More great info. I appreciate all the great content!!
Glad to hear it!
What is that lure
fish30acre creeper. its a prototype but killer bait
I liked the information but I don't likethe use of the crawler bait in picture to lure me in and than no mention of the bait or anything to do with it whatsoever
sorry. its a prototype fish30acre
I want to see if you asked do you answer me make your own lures I would fish hooks
I do make my own lures a lot of the time
I'm so confident in my bait that one time, while practice flipping on my lawn, I caught a 7lbs Bass. 😆 jk.
imopressive!
Ok cool. Next time I see a bunch of children swimming I'm gonna cast right in the middle of them. Thanks for the advice. 👍. I'm just joking guys
Haha! Thats not quite what I said haha
@@MattStefanFishing thank you VERY MUCH
Get a mic please, we old folks can't hear you, and don't want to miss anything.
