The FIRST Thing to Learn When Studying Korean | Korean Interviews

  • I asked Koreans what they thought was the first (and most important) thing to learn when studying Korean. The specific question I asked them was, “한국어를 공부하는 사람이 어떤 걸 제일 먼저 공부하는 게 좋을까요?” As a follow-up question, I also asked what the most effective way of studying that would be (“그걸 어떻게 공부하는 게 가장 도움이 될까요?”). What do you think Korean learners should learn first, before anything else? And how should they learn it? Let me know in the comments!

First step is to realise how overwhelming it is and have a mental breakdown, if you can get past that you're good to go.

I had a pretty set idea on how I wanted to start so first I trained my ears in hearing words in speech (because a new language just sounds like sounds first) by listening to it until I heard words, then I learned Hangul to learn to hear each letter/character/syllable, then I learned sentence structure to know what I'm listening for and then I started to add some vocab but quite slowly to train my ears like a baby would, and then I just absorb whatever I encounter pretty much as well as I can even in surprising places like gag consert. :) I try to "consume" both speech, books, apps and reading to try to advance evenly.

For any language you are learning, I would recommend starting with the word order and learn the following phrases extremely well: I want, I need, I have, I like, I miss, I love and learn their negative forms. Add nouns/objects to that, then learn to use the pronouns to those: You, They, Our, and extend that out with the same phrases. Once you get very good at that, I would add location to the mix with the same phrases: Here, there, up, down, around. Next include in that some flare to the mix: As for me, Also, Sometimes, And, Or, Etc. Therefore. I think those are the most important beginner things needed to be perfect ASAP to get started.

    First step: learning hangeul
Second step: learn sentence word order
3rd step: learn how to conjugate verbs (very basic such as past, present, future)
4th step: learn the common speech levels (casual/polite/formal)
After these steps just going on to learn vocabulary and grammar imo

I think the first thing is to become familiar to how the language sounds, and learn the alphabet for the language you are studying. You really can't learn the correct way to speak, read or write, without knowing the alphabet and becoming at least familiar with pronunciation.

I think learning Hangul first and then moving to grammar then after that moving to conversation and slang

I studied Billy's first 2 books and practiced making sentences with a friend of mine in the USA then came here and found nobody talks that way :-( Everything is slang, dialect and incomplete sentences! But for getting around I found that first thing to learn is the numbers and how to ask the price of things, then how to ask for a discount! They like to haggle, and also overcharge foreigners, hahaha! Second would be directions, as in 화장실이 어디예요? Then just get by with body language as I learn more colloquial 한국어. But 한글 is so easy to learn start with that. It's amazing how many Korean words are just transliterated English words, especially on signs and advertisements.

    1. 한글
-- used concurrently with basic salutations and correct enunciation
    2. adding basic noun/verbs to your vocab
--now that we know 집,가다,어디,왜 we can start building SOV sentences
    3. Conjugation of verbs
-- present, past, future, progressive, 니다/요
    4. Nomilization
--now we can expand our sentences with added nouns
    5. Verbs to Adjectives
-- both descriptive and action verbs
    6. Start making complex sentences
    -- using phrase/sentence connectors
    저는 그분이 쓴 책을 쌌어요.

The first thing I learnt when I studied Japanese was hiragana. Romaji is silly because it's not really used. When studying Korean I think learning Hangul is best so that you can read everything how Koreans do. It's probably easier in Korean since there's mostly just Hangul, reading Japanese is a lot more complicated, then basic words, phrases and grammar. Listening is important too.

I searched a lot about learning 한국어 and they always say to learn the alphabet. Then I proceeded the vocabulary but got tired of it so I proceeded grammar. Honestly I find it that grammar is better than vocabulary since you can pick up easily when you learn grammar.

I definitely think learning about the place and the culture comes first. Because how will know if that language interest you if you know nothing about where it comes from.

I think you need to be able to say exactly why you want to learn Korean and realistically it needs to be a pretty strong reason. Because learning Korean is a lot like a marriage. Learning the alphabet is the wedding where everything is exciting and easy and fun. Actually learning the language needs to be an every day passion where at all times it is worth it to you to do the work. My original reason was to understand a BTS Vlive stream. It wasn’t a very powerful reason BUT I absolutely fell in love with Hangul. It is the most glorious puzzle that I know I can solve because it has a very set design. How do I stay committed to learning? The same way I stay married. I do the work AND keep it fun and interesting.😊

    3. Basic grammar
    4. Expand with vocab

Dramas to learn spoken speech (my first goal). Even if it is controversial, I think using english subtitles gives you comprehensible input and helps get you started, and at the same time learning vocabulary and basic grammar. Even a not gifted person like me picked up enough that beginner grammar that felt too hard when I started became really easy and obvious 6 months later when I tried again (and most grammar as well, not only beginner). At the same time you learn basic customs, family interactions, cultural facts, levels of speech...

Prolly the most helpful thing that I've learned was the honorifics. Most beginners tend to use 반말 because of kdramas and they're unaware that there are certain ways to talk to every age group.

First you should get used to the listening how korean people talk maybe watching dramas or just tv in general. Then learn the alphabet and basic words and focus more in vocabulary than grammar at least I find that I have less trouble with korean grammar that when I first started learning English or even my native language Spanish.
