Hey William, you should take a look at the Noa Gambit for black! All lines are overwhelmingly winning, but I want to show you this line in particular with some of the most venomous traps I've seen. It starts: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Nc3 Nxe4 5. Bxf7+ Kxf7 6. Nxe4 d5 7. Ng3 e4 8. Ng1 h5 If they take your pawn it opens up the door to queen sacs such as: 9. Nxh5 Qh4 10. Ng3 Bg4 11. f3 exf3 12. gxf3 Re8+ 13. Kf2 Bc5+ 14. Kg2 Qh3+ 15. Nxh3 Bxh3# or 9. Nxh5 Qh4 10. Ng3 Bg4 11. f3 exf3 12. Nxf3 Qxg3+ 13. hxg3 Rxh1+ 14. Kf2 Rxd1 Even if white knows computer lines, the best they can do is a -2 eval.
Love it!! Yeah looks like black is already doing really well there. I think Bxf7+ isn’t a good choice for white tbh. One alternative that I’ve briefly explored in the past in that position is 5. o-o and white is kind of playing a reversed stafford!
Good question. Depends on the rating and the situation, but I think the von popiel is extremely legitimate and can certainly be played OTB! I’d certainly do it. Of course, effectiveness of these go down with higher time controls and stronger opponents in general
