The jazzy interpretation, the sweet runs he does in the beginning, the beautiful reharmonization of the chords, and then to top it off I was not expecting a voice that rich. Absolutely incredible version.
Eric Gales is naturally right-handed, but he plays left-handed, even though the guitar he's using is right-handed and turned upside-down... Eric Gales is the Leonardo DaVinci of electric guitar.

A guitarist is NOTHING without the best bass and drum players-- and specifically those two accompanists. Why do you think John Mayer, Joe Pass, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Clapton were so adamant about who they play with in their core. If the rhythm section can't follow the performance is garbage.
@@theguitarsosa When guitarist Peter Green formed a band, he named it after who he wanted the drummer and bass player to be, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. McVie was in another band at the time too.
I normally don't like anyone doing any of Jimi's versions, but this guy takes it and runs with it. Jimi was wanting to go in the direction of a more jazz approach before he died. I think he'd like this. There's several Hendrix tribute artists out there, but this guy is his own persona. Good going!

@@DBlairMusic Oh, I totally agree with you!! He is influenced by Jimi and if Jimi were around today he would be absolutely thrilled with him and what direction he has gone with his music. It was so hard for Jimi to do his own thing as people and management had him blocked into his old stage antics and note by note stuff. He wanted so badly to go this direction where he could be free with his music and style. Peer would be completely correct. No way would I ever imply Gales was any type of impersonator. :-)

I don't know man, Eric is an amazing player but I don't know if his style would translate well with Maggot Brain or any Funkadelic stuff. He over plays a lot of times and he doesn't stick to the pocket enough to do the George Clinton stuff. Now his style works very well to showcase his immense talent but some songs are just not going to sound as good with his interpretation. I think Maggot Brain is one of them. Call me crazy but....... 🙂

Absolutely mind-blowing. Wow, the man is such an extra-ordinary talent, he is just one with the instrument. Something you really don't see often, his skills are out of this world!

I grew up with my stepdad as a close friend of Eric’s since they were kids and I use to love watching Eric just jam on an acoustic guitar back in the day just sitting around the living room as a kid.

Two weeks ago he went on the boards in Paks, and I was so lucky to listen to his concert. He's amazing. God bless him, and his guitar. Paks is little town in Hungary, but has a famous International Bluesfestival in every year. And we got the opportunity to know such a world star like him, Beth Hart, Josh Smith and so on. Come and see it next year, in July first week! :)

To everyone who says “Jimi played a right handed guitar left handed”. You’re right, but it was restrung properly with the saddles and nut reversed. Eric didn’t restring his. And as a guitar player myself, watching Eric play, my head does that thing like when you talk to dogs in a high pitched voice and their heads pivot in confusion.
Jimi could play a righty guitar upside down, but you're correct. He usually did not. Eric learned from his older brother, who played it that way.

A left-hander playing a right-handed guitar, somewhat common. Leaving that right-handed guitar stringed right-handed, and playing left... I can't claim it's a first, but I've never encountered it before. Maybe it explains Eric Gales' unique and unexpected style, or maybe he would have developed that same style regardless of such details. Either way, the man is an absolute stand-out talent.
Albert King was also playing left-handed with a right-handed guitar just flipped over.
Eric is actually right-handed in writing. He learned to play like this from his brother (who was also right-handed).

The man is incredibly talented no doubt. But I often wonder if he can play this song the way it was traditionally performed without all of the jazz infusions. I bet he probably can't after playing this way all of these years. One thing is for sure though, no one can play it the way HE does.

man even the simplest stuff he does is amazing, I knew about Eric gales since I started playing in 2019 and never bothered to listen to him til now, he is a phenomenal guitarist. I love the different styles he puts in this song, very different to jimi. he is so unique, he does some chromatic/jazzy runs and also adds new chords and voicings to the song and that r&b style of playing too.

If there is some classical music rule that says you must count it thickest string first, you've lost 99% of us because it's EBGDAE at this point and we don't follow classical music technicalities lol.
