  • Who is the strongest dragon in Dark Souls & Elden Ring?
The Souls franchise has a long history with dragons - even more so if we go back to King's Field, the sort of spiritual predecessor of Souls. But there can only be one number one! Is it Black Dragon Kalameet? Seath the Scaleless? The Ancient Dragon? Sinh, the Slumbering Dragon? The Gaping Dragon? Darkeater Midir? Dragonlord Placidusax? Lich Dragon Fortisax? Man dragon Doug?

Placidusax is never pronounced in game so we have no way of knowing how it's pronounced. The nearest we can get, is looking at the Japanese spelling, which is phonetic: 竜王プラキドサクス | Ryūō purakidosakusu | Dragon King Placidosax/Placidsax. Japanese characters are written this way to reflect foreign sounds. (i,e Alex is アレックス | Arekkusu. Doug is ダグ | Dagu ) This means we can (to some extent) use Japanese phonetic spellings to get an idea of how terms never said in game, should sound. Ornstein from DaS1 is a good example: 竜狩りオーンスタイン | Ōnsutain which gives us a definitive "stine" because "steen" would be more like オーンスティーン | ōnsutīn presumably.
Pu - similar to the 'pu' in "puzzle"
Ra - similar to the 'ra' in "raw"
Ki - similar to the 'ki' in "key"
Do - similar to the 'do' in "dome"
Sa - similar to the 'sa' in "saw"
Ku - similar to the 'ku' in "kook"
Su - ending with a 's' sound as in "bus"
With the Japanese spelling taken into account, the pronunciation would accurately reflect as:
    "Pla" as in "plastic"
    "ki" as in "key"
    "do" as in "dome"
    "sa" as in "saw"
    "k" as in "kook"
    "s" as in "bus"
    "Pla-ki-du-sa-ks"
Anyway, just relax and don't shout at me because some other dude on YT said Plussysussysacks or Platypus Saxophone or whatever. There isn't really a right or wrong, currently.

All the ancient dragon names are words in latin. They start with "object/adjective" and end with stone (sax). Placidusax means calm stone. So the correct pronunciations are in latin (spelling how it's written).

    • @SilverMont
      @SilverMont  2 месяца назад

Yeah when I was looking up the dragon names, I came to a similar conclusion - I'm not an expert in any language by any means. But I do enjoy the etyomology of words and names so I always research them, even at a very basic level. They largely all share the "sax" which seems to be like saxum as in rock, strength, etc. Which makes sense as they are all rather... stone. (MIyazaki really likes his stone dragons doesn't he?) The odd one out is Greyoll. You might assume (again, this is a big assumption) that Greyoll is the 'mother' of all dragons and Placidusax is the father.
So we got Placidusax: "Calm Stone / Peaceful Strength"
Fortissax: "Strong Stone / Brave Rock"
Gransax: "Grand Stone / BIG ROCK"
Lansseax: "Spear Stone / Sharp Rock"
The different spelling for Lan might be because she's female, too. But again all of this is just speculation.

@@SilverMont Greyoll is the mother of all lesser mortal dragons. Placidusax probably lived long before Greyoll was born, but due to anatomy and development Placidusax is younger, than all other Ancient Dragons, cause Placidusax look is closer to Mortal Dragons than Ancient, that means Placidusax's speacies were the passing link between Ancient and Present Mortal dragons. Plus Placidusax's body has Male and Female heads. I think Placidusax was very qualitatively grafted in order to become an Elden Lord.

    • @Skrallizar
      @Skrallizar 2 месяца назад

I just assumed it was pronounced "plaseedusax", but I never had any special reason for it. Given Elden Ring's other dragons, it would logically make sense to just follow their language roots and use that. So "plakeydusax" seems to be the more accurate. I'll probably end up keep using the "wrong" version still, since I've illogically gotten attatched to it. Unless Fromsoftware does as Pokémon with Arceus by giving a clear official way to say it (Ar-key-us btw, since Ar-sea-us sounds similar to british "arse").

The way I understand it, the gods didn’t fear Kalameet more than Midir because he was stronger. It was because they found and raised Midir from a young age. He is a descendant of the ancient dragons after all. Perhaps they even found him as an egg. You should rightly fear a wild wolf, but one can also be taken as a pup and trained. It doesn’t mean the trained one is inherently weaker.

He even has his daughter Shira keeping an eye on him the whole time during her stay at the Ringed City.
Despite losing to the Chosen Undead, Seath's contingencies held up fairly well against an entity that could endlessly respawn and could eventually find the weak points of his defenses all things considered.

Elden Ring vastly out scales every other modern Fromsoft game. You have the Radahn statement, which is a good marker for power level when discussing shard bearers. However, the top tiers of Elden Ring completely eclipse this. The Elden Ring governs the laws of reality, so the four Elden Lords, Placidusax, Radagon, Godfrey, and the Tarnished, all have that ability. Obviously Elden Beast scales above that with the Tarnished themselves being top of the verse.
The argument for infinite speed Placidusax also isn't based off teleportation like described here, it is based on the arena you fight in being outside of time. It's not even really infinite speed, but irrelevant speed. Infinite speed is movement over 0 time. Time isn't even a concept where you fight Placidusax, so it's an even better feat in reality.

I understand DS Dragons weak to lightning, because that is clearly implied in the lore, but them weak to other type of status effect or with defense to some in the gameplay doesn't really mean they actually have it canonically. I understand not wanting to use serrament about a character having some abilities since it could be hyperboilic or something else, but items description are the lore of the game itself, they cane be taken literally tje statements (Radhan holding all the stars, even seen in the cutscene and lore) so i do think that Placidusax along with the other ancients Dragons of both DS and ER, have time manipulation or transcendence. Either way we see one fall after he dies and it's a pretty tiny rock, as it just made a small hole instead of like, demolishing the entire continent haha. And just as an added thing, none of that's a slight against him. Radahn is one of my faves and I do think he's the strongest demigod.

And no, in game stats scaling or resistance does not scale to the Canon of the character if not stated somewhere in the Lore. Midir and ancients Dragons are stated to be weak to lightning the lore and items description, making his High damage to lightning effect normal. But if we take a enemy/boss, that for no reason at all has resistence or no resistence to a certain in game stats, assuming that in the Canon of said enemy/boss, he was weak to that stat is wrong, since Gameplay ≠ story/lore

Seath is like Batman, what he lacks in power he makes up for with contingencies and allies. He is the reason the Everlasting Dragons lost the war, so it's arguably him. If we're getting into pure power dynamics, I mean Gransax is city sized and could use red lightning to nuke people. Placidusax was an Elden Lord and he's missing three heads when WE encounter him. Prime Placidusax was undoubtedly well-deserving of his title of "Dragonlord". Of course then there's Midir...who in addition to being an everlasting dragon (or the closest thing we see to one) also gained the power of the abyss and is the hardest dragon to fight in any of these games. It’s actually confrimed in the Elden ring dlc, it’s not Godfrey who fought placidusax, it was during the war ages ago, one of placidusax companions bayle another extremely ancient and powerful dragon which betrayed him and attacked him out of nowhere, which resulted in mutual injury. Placidusax was lord before the age of the erdtree and golden order, another item before the age before the golden order was when outer gods struggled for control meaning prime placidusax was likely in the war. The ‘storm lord’ Godfrey fought was a giant bird. It’s stated in the shadows of the erdtree, the dragon cult lady, stated bayle is the vilest and oldest, placidusax was the first ever, he was there since the very beginning. I think it’s fair to give placidusax resistance, he’s more vulnerable to resistance because of the state he’s in. I also think placidusax was significantly bigger in his prime, the version we see is very tangled, withered skinny like its only bones left. Placidusax can manipulate time and space to some extent. If you also look at midair vs placidusax on RUclips, there size are pretty similar, and they are both significantly bigger than kalameet

When it comes to dragons in Dark Souls, they are of the quintessence so they can exist for eternity without a soul, but they can become vessels for souls that can also corrupt their form. Dragons being malleable to souls is a good way of putting it, and all dragons that came after the advent of fire have never been a perfect representation of the Everlasting Dragons.
When it comes to Sinh, what's your opinion on the poison within him? I'm of the opinion that Sinh is a survivor of the great war with Nito being the only one that managed to inflict him with a miasma of poison. I don't think the priestesses or Elana sang poison into his heart, they appear to be doing it to comfort him and to prepare for revenge against all the Drakeboods.

To me the answer seems complicated.
The Divine Dragon seems to be truly Immortal, able to exist as long as time itself exists, which is a "strong" ability, but it's not a raw destructive power, making it hard to call it the "Strongest", instead just "hardest to kill yet reasonably difficult to defeat".
Placidusax has lost it's god, similar to Godrey being banished from the Lands Between and losing his connection to Marika, who is called a true god (though not Outer God) by Enya, the finger reader. This must have had SOME effect on Placidusax's power, weakening it. And item descriptions uses the word "said" when talking about waiting in the Storm Beyond Time, and while we really do find it there, it's unclear if it was a concious choice to use "time powers" do so or if it's just the strange and as of yet poorly explained power of Farum Azula itself. So the Dragonlord is really strong and the Gransax spear nuke attack is destructive, but its hard to say if they're really the "Strongest".
With what little we know about the Dragon God from Demon Souls', it, along with pretty much all the demons, is that it's the power of the Demon Soul (whatever that truly means) that has made legends real, but it's not a true "god" any more than the Stormlord. So it might have the most destructive powers, yet it hasn't broken out and caused widespread desolation, and it's quite easy to kill it, since the legends about it are implied to include the ballistae we use to kill it. Maybe 1st place, probably 2nd place.
Kalameet and Midir are restrained by their own goals and desires, making it really hard to gauge their true power, but we kill them all the same, a single undead whose super power is "always coming back after dying as long as they don't give up". If Kalameet was truly as scary as the lore make him to be then he would be stronger than Midir, since Midir is not a proper Ancient Dragon but a descendant.
Sinh is never called or even implied to be a surviving Ancient Dragon, and he's certainly strong against mortal humans (and similar species, Dark Souls is strange) because of his toxic breath, but I'd hesitate to compare him to Kalameet or Midir.
In the end, if raw destructive power was all that mattered, then I would say Granssax was the strongest and the Dragon God was number two, but if we include how hard they are to kill then I would put Placidusax as first and Divine Dragon second, but without something like the Mortal Blade to even things out, then Divine Dragon is "hardest to defeat" and the Dragon God would be Strongest.

If we are talking lore wise the strongest will be dragon god
If we talking gameplay wise the strongest is midir without a doubt
You really under selling midir in the video
He has the best defences by far with insane damage output and he is the most aggressive among these dragons and the largest one if we don't count the dragon god and the divine dragon
and saying midir is weak to lightning is an overstatement
He is in fact more resistance to lightning than even palcidusax
Midir has 60% reduction to lightning damage compare to placi 40%
There are two channels on RUclips who ported midir to elden ring and put him against placidusax
and he absolutely defeated placi dealing some 8k to 10k damage with his lazer and combos so yeah I will say he is the strongest for now unless a stronger dragon comes in the elden ring dlc

@SilverMont your assumption that a lot of statements aren't meant to be taken in a literal sense are somewhat misguided. your have to use the context, for example Radadhn is Said to hold back the stars, they aren't talking about him holding back all of the stars in space but rather the meteorites and space creatures that were trying to invade the lands between. the star creatures like Astel are capable of small form terraformation in a similar manner to the larger outer gods like the God of Scarlett rot or the Greater will. Radahn holding back beings capable or warping the environment around them is actually far more powerful than you'd think. the protagonist of each souls game aside from sekiro are all fighting to either destroy or replenish the order of an entire universe (dark souls) or planet/realm (elden ring) . in dark souls the first flame is what brought about the concepts of space and time to the everlasting world by introducing the cyclical nature of power that gwyn tried to stagnate (the first sin) beings like the ever lasting Dragons each had power that required the efforts of many of the gods to stand a chance at defeating (they would use lightning to peel their scales causing the Dragons to become vulnerable to the death brought into the world by the death soul of nito) the fact that the everlasting Dragons were born in a realm devoid of time and space and could only be killed by forces forged using parts of the first flame means that they transcends space and time. I hope that this makes sense, if not i can explain more, with that in mind I can say that midir is likely more powerful that calameet as he fought the more powerful protagonist, the ashen one . we know that the ashen one is more powerful because he is able to fight other lords of cinder who have all linked the fire through his journey. the first flame also gets weaker with each linking, meaning that it takes a larger soul to ignite it, and by the end of dark souls 3, the ashen one is already at least 8th or 9th in line for the linking of the fire and as a end game boss it is clear that midir is battling a far more powerful protagonist. elden lore is different because they also have conceptual manipulation so I can't speak on it but I think that as far as dark souls goes, Midir is the most powerful dragon, even if he was raised to be a slave to the gods.

Haha, and he's not even a true dragon! Certainly a true douche though.

Kalameet is not ancient dragon thats mistranslated. And I tnink Midir would win. Why ? Becose lize speed, strenght is most important inanimal kingdom + his laser is really strong. YES Placidusax have stronger abilities and I belive that in his prime when he had 5 heads he is the strongest. And about the lore that they use midir to eat the dark for ever. Well he was raised by the gods of Anor Londo thy feed him and care about hem he love them probeby so he dos not have any reason to kill them . That dont make him weaker.

Is it mistranslated? I don't speak Japanese but I ran the items through a bunch of translators and they did seem to imply he was, at least.
