I was lucky enough to be at the 2nd night of VH filming of Live Without a Net when I was 16 years old. In line with the stage directly over Eddie's left shoulder. Ed has always been an inspiration. An innovative genius!
I'm using a whammy pedal on my Helix to emulate the transtrem so I can play the same positions as Eddie. It's a 3 step shift between standard and up to G tuning.
I remember watching Live Without A Net and thinking how the world he did that intro. Because you can clearly see he is playing the beginning as traditional G C D chording. Great Video and Great Job. I know figuring that part out had to take some time and dilligence.
In the live video, it shows eddie has the trem pulled up and locked so he could play the intro in the first position regular G,A and D so he could use the natural open notes and easy pulloffs. It's when he dive bombs the notes he unlocks the trem to go back down to standard pitch and he's still playing the power chords in the first position. Kinda weird to explain but watch the video and you'll catch on. Cool guitar 👌
Great tutorial! I've wanted to have a go at this since forever but always been been put off by the Trans Trem (and lack of free time). Being forced off work with an injury has given me time to revisit some of my favourites, so glad I found this gem. Thanks👍
You're welcome! I didn't like my audio on the first one as well as some production elements. Figured it'd be a good idea to remake and re upload. The song has been on my mind a lot so I had to do it!😎🤟🏻
Man I'm so happy to see your channel growing! I been with you for a while now and you have been one of my favorite channels since I found ya. Keep up the incredible content my friend👊👊
Thank you again Marty that was a great lesson this will take me a couple months LOL don't forget I'm old. when I was a kid I picked up house-of-the-rising-sun and scales like in a couple minutes when I was a kid😎now im old and moldy it'll take months to learnz some of this stuff. My main instrument is drums I've been doing that since I was 13, I think I told you that. I didn't pursue the guitar but I was plucking it a little bit back then I should have continued but such is life.
These chords are amazing sounding in this tune. Yeah, I don’t own a Trans Trem unfortunately. Lol The way that you taught this lesson is very doable. Thanks man. Guess it's 5150 time, just in time to continue summer too! 😁🎸
Hi Marty. Loving the guitar. I will give this lesson a go later thanks. Sorry that I haven't been posting lately, someone in my family passed away and I was just taking a bit of time out away from it all.
@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank you so much man. It was my mother who passed away in July. We knew that she had cancer since January, so it wasn't unexpected. But she died peacefully in the end.
@Ranch5150SkinWalker my mother was 79. My father passed away January 2018. Sorry to hear about your mother. And as you say, family comes first. I have beautiful twin girls that keep me sane every day 😊
Finally Mr. Marty, one down and a lot to go, lol. At least when you get an EVH song down, you feel successful and a better guitar player. Now the hard part, playing it, standing up, ouch my fingers!
I got one of those nifty Pitch Box pedals by Moore that gives you a similar tone to some Van Hagar tunes “detune mode at -2”. Highly demonstrated on the YT. It also has a pitch shift that would be pretty handy for this tune. Start at +1 and stomp it off when the switch happens 🤷♂️
@Ranch5150SkinWalker So true and they look to be an awkward guitar to play I'll stick with my Wolfgang Special it's so versatile. But thanks for what you do I couldn't learn to play like Eddie without you! You nail it every time.
Great video, dude! Just wondering if you know of a pedal that would drop the 1½ steps (i think) for the first part of the intro? Finding the stretch a bit of a struggle. Keep doing what you're doing!!
Hey man, thanks!! Well.... I have all those amps behind me (which I use and love dearly) however for RUclips I run direct with a fractal Ax8. I use a Friedman BE patch and Friedman stereo IR's. For the FX I run a stereo reverb in pro tools along with plate reverb. On this tune I added a little chorus too!
Thinking about getting back into playing. Many years ago I owned the Ernie ball music man evh. I don’t really want to spend $3000 on one of those even though I did love that guitar. Would you recommend the evh line to someone getting back into playing? Price seems much more affordable. How does the Frankie compare to the evh special?
The Frankie is really a magical sounding guitar. Same pickup as the Wolfgang. On a budget however, the Wolfgang's made in Indonesia are really nice and they have excellent color options. Very solid guitars and exfelllent quality. The specials have a carved top and the WH models have a flat top like a Tele. Special is a little more comfy but pricier. All options are great. Spend withjn your budget. 😎☮️
Thanks Marty! I was around for the other lesson too. Tone is dead on to my ear. Side note, from the pic from the other day, I shook BB King's hand once and said good show. I'll remember and brag forever...he forgot exactly ten seconds later.
Dude that's funny! But cool you met him! I passed by a hotel downtown Nashville once on a weeknight at 2am and his tour bus with BB King on it was just pulling in. I figured I'd stop and see what I could see.... but decided not to. It was 2 am on a weeknight. 😂
Please let's be real. Eddie will tell you; his Frankenstein guitar was merely a "second's" Fender body with "any" Stratocaster 22 fret neck and a humbucker crammed in the bridge position -- IN EDDIES F'N HANDS! These guitars going for 1000s of dollars are living in delusional KAMALA HARRIS LAND!!!

He played summer nights perfectly on that video!!
I still think that intro to "Summer Nights" on the LWAN video is one of the coolest rock star moments ever -- EVH was a KING !!
I watch so many segments from that concert classic and crazy
5150!!
Dude....that was an epic concert!!!💯
That concert was awesome! I'm glad they taped it!
This Opening Riff is one of My Favorites of all time. You Broke it Down Spectacularly !! Awesome Job
Thanks a lot! 🤟🏻😎
One the coolest rock songs, period!
I remember it live!
Yeh, great song man!
This song has one of my favorite intros of Eddies.🤘😎🎸
Same here! When the drums kick in it's so heavy!
Man, I forgot about this tune. Always loved it, going to listen now! Thanks Marty!
Great lesson and your intonation/tuning is spot-on! Keep it up!
"Summer Nights" is a favorite of mine - Sammy and Eddie really shine.
Awesome! Thank you!😎🎵☮️
Just one word... Summer!! Thank you Marty.
Thanks!

Great idea 😎
Thx Marty. Very cool. 5150 is one of my all-time favorite albums. Clearly in my top 10. Red zone or no zone. Crank it up. 😊
You're welcome! Yes indeed. 5150 is so amazing. 😎🍺🎵
I remember watching Live Without A Net and thinking how the world he did that intro. Because you can clearly see he is playing the beginning as traditional G C D chording. Great Video and Great Job. I know figuring that part out had to take some time and dilligence.
Great lesson.
Loved the mods on your new Frankie. I'm enjoying my new black Frankie.
Fantastic guitar 🎸
You are doing this well as usual, i´am really impressed. Hats off again!
Another awesome lesson Marty for yet another amazing EVH tune!
You're very welcome dude. Thanks for watching!! 😎🎵🍺

I always wanted to learn how to play Summer Nights. Now I know !

Great lesson Marty! Hope you're having a great summer!
Thanks! Yeh I am, other than lawn mower repairs haha! Hope you are too 😎🍺
Wow! A remake! Thanks Marty!

This is awesome Marty!
Thanks bro!! Love summer nights!

Great song, great album, but then what van Halen album isn't, excellent video Marty thank you 🤘
You're very welcome man! Thanks for watching. Never a bad time for 5150!!
I think it’s impossible to get to that part of the song and not give a Hagar “UGH!” lol
Excellent vid sir!

Glad you liked it man, we gotta hang in to summer while it's here!! 5150 time indeed!! 😎🤟🏻
Nicely transcribed Marty the new Frankie rips 🤘👍
Thank you! Man, I really love this guitar!
That was well explained the Sus2 and Sus4....taking the root chord....you done it in a mater of 2 seconds, but never understood it until now!
Hi Marty. Loving the guitar. I will give this lesson a go later thanks.
Sorry that I haven't been posting lately, someone in my family passed away and I was just taking a bit of time out away from it all.
So sorry to hear that! Life gets in the way sometimes, but family is a priority. My thoughts are with you man. 🎵☮️
@Ranch5150SkinWalker Thank you so much man.
It was my mother who passed away in July. We knew that she had cancer since January, so it wasn't unexpected. But she died peacefully in the end.
@@bmac5085 so sorry man. I know how you feel. I had the same scenario a couple years ago. My mom was 89. 🙏

Sorry to hear about your mother. And as you say, family comes first. I have beautiful twin girls that keep me sane every day 😊
Love it ! thank you !
You are so welcome!
It seems to be your favorite Van Halen tune!😉 But it it great, especially the finger picked intro in combination with the liquid fluid runs!🤘
Finally Mr. Marty, one down and a lot to go, lol. At least when you get an EVH song down, you feel successful and a better guitar player. Now the hard part, playing it, standing up, ouch my fingers!
Haha! Keep chugging away man! True words. Standing and playing can be sooooo hard!!!

PS your channel is awesome!
Love the tuorials. I also love your intro riff. Is there more or is it part of something I can find?
Yes! Great!
Using same Friedman preset on your Fractal AX8 ? Great sound man. Congrats.
Yep same preset! I shoot for consistency 😎
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker let us know if you are willing to share with us this preset! 😀
Have you seen the "Rare" Van Halen footage from Donington Monsters of Rock tour in 1984 that's recently been put on RUclips?
Oh thank God, a way to play this for mortal humans! My fingers just aren't stretchy enough to do it the EVH way! Thanks Marty!
Thanks 😊🤘
You're welcome bro!
My head already exploded 4 mins in. 🤯
Use my line6 catalyst 200 and pedal to toggle pitch shift works beautifully. Though I'd still really rather have a Steinberger trans trem guitar.
Man they're so pricey! 😔
@Ranch5150SkinWalker So true and they look to be an awkward guitar to play I'll stick with my Wolfgang Special it's so versatile. But thanks for what you do I couldn't learn to play like Eddie without you! You nail it every time.
5150 percent cool
Thanks brother! 😎☮️
I happen to have a copy of Franky, striped, that I bought the day before he passed. I have all the documentation. I’ll never sell it!
Great video, dude! Just wondering if you know of a pedal that would drop the 1½ steps (i think) for the first part of the intro? Finding the stretch a bit of a struggle.
Keep doing what you're doing!!
What an awesome tone! Do you have any distortion pedals or just the amp? Thanks!
Hey man, thanks!! Well.... I have all those amps behind me (which I use and love dearly) however for RUclips I run direct with a fractal Ax8. I use a Friedman BE patch and Friedman stereo IR's.

Throw some distressed brass fine tuners on that floyd. It'll pop
Gotta get myself a guitar with a Trans Trem. They’re just all so damn expensive 😂
Dude no lie! Insane. 😆
👍
11:45
Yeah, im gonna go ahead and capo. 😂
I hear ya lol 😆
Lol the video is 19:55 long just like Eddie's birthday
Introducing, the evh cash grab guitar.
But it's so amazing! Honestly man. I love my Frankie so much but it's not exactly the guitar you play gigs with due to the stripes. 😎☮️
Using CAGED to play this.
Was hoping to find a lesson that someone was not talking. lol. I will keep looking.
based on a toto song this is.
Cool! Which one?
@@Ranch5150SkinWalker luk said it on tone talk youtube show with dave friedman. i'ii try to remember.
