Buddy, I consider myself an advanced user, in fact I can program in HTMl, JavaScript and PHP but now I am retired, I really can't be bothered working out how to use Shortcuts, until now that is. What a great demonstration of how easy it is. Thanks for the effort you put into this clip.

Thanks, Rich. You really know how to teach seniors. Keep it simple. I’ve been a Mac user for many years; since 1987, but the iPad, though of great use, is different ( I use an 11” Pro) . This lesson on Shortcuts and Split Screen is just what I’ve been looking for. (By the way, I’m located just north of you in Person County.)
Rich, I’m totally gobsmacked by the knowledge you share in your videos. I’d like to invite you to come and teach me more! However as you can’t do that, I have a question. I’m going to get an up to date iPad - not sure which one. If I spend time adding these shortcuts to my current ipad, can I transfer the new shortcuts to my new iPad OR do I have to create all the shortcuts again? I’m a senior senior (83) and I’m sure the practice would be good for me but my time is somewhat limited! Many thanks!
Wow, Rich! I struggled to get two apps side by side and eventually just gave up - but you've cracked the code for me. This is so useful, and so clearly explained. Thanks!
Hi Rich. Just found this tutorial 👏🏻👏🏻 you are keeping me busy learning how to work on my IPad!!! I've had it for 5 years and finally learned how! Thank you again and again.
I deleted the shortcut from my home screen and added it back and it worked. It was a bit different as when I go into gallery and choose split screen it will not work for me. I have to click the plus from the all shortcuts screen and do it from there. Thank you so much for this tutorial! I will hit the subscribe button right now!
Wow! This is brilliant Rich! Thank you so much for sharing ! I can now copy and paste recipes from Safari to notes so easily! Even better was the fact that when I went into set up the split screen shortcut it had one already done for Safari /Notes ! Result 😊
Excellent, clear, complete explanation. I don't think this widget will be particularly easy for me to set up, but it's definitely very worthwhile. It will be a big help to me in preparing lessons as a foreign language teacher. This video just got a new "Like," and your channel just got a new subscriber! Thank you!
9:12 9:12 Rich, thank you for your wonderful lessons!!! They are so simple and helpful!!!! I’m having trouble on this lesson right at this point and wondered if you could help me know what I’m missing!! I get to the point of the Home Screen, getting them to jiggle, and clicking on the plus sign, however, after clicking on the plus sign, it brings up the widget app, but not the ones we created. What did I do wrong?? Also,a problem I have is I either doze off or my fingers twitch and alot or all of what I have typed disappears!!! Is there a way to recover that? It is so annoying!!! I’ve tried copying and pasting it into notes then I can copy anD paste it back and it helps, but I still end up retyping!! Thanks so much!!!!
It took me a few videos to find you and I’m glad I did. Shew! I could actually keep up! 😊. Thank you for making this video and in a way that was easy to follow.
Great video Rich! I am an IT Guy and I appreciate your videos! Pick up things that Might not use all the time so thanks. Please let me ask a non tech question. The lights in the background, where did you get them. Thanks you have a new subscriber with notifications 😊
I'll be buying my first ipad this September & that's interesting to try. I have samething in my mind,if i can use a external ssd w/ an ipad 9, 10.2" thank you sir Rich.
Rick, I tried this and eventually got it to work thanks so much for the video and I also appreciate how you reply to any questions that people asked it helped me to understand my mistake. Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much. This video seems to have hit chord with folks and I'm wondering if I should do another. Except this time, make sure I cover any issues that might pop up. What do you think?
Hi Rich , This is a great video , I learnt a lot , very useful thank you . I use the split screen a lot so this will be very handy , keep up the good work I am working my way through your video’s at the moment love your style 😊

Very informative Rich, THANK YOU ! ???? Do you have any shortcuts that works on an iPhone where upon arriving at a location (store) it will open the Reminders App and open a shopping list? I have had no success in getting the automation to work. I can run test the shortcut and it opens the reminders app, loads the Shopping List for the particular store but is just does run automatically when I arrive at the particular store. Thanks.
I love this, but to setup on iPad, your iPad needs to be landscape mode ( horizontal) to select apps. Don’t know why. Tried in portrait mode and didn’t get the drop down apps menu. Finally was successful. I subscribed btw. Thanks
4pm.I am having a problem when I touch in Get Organized the Split Screen 2 Apps and press the + it goes in search and does not go any further?. I tried to reboot, but it does the same thing. Looks like it is frozen. Am I doing something wrong? How can I fix this. I am sending this from my Android. This is my first iPad.
Easy to follow but i’d love to see a video that shows how some of these actually saves any time or makes tasks any easier. Ie having photos and messages side by side. How is this any easier than selecting photos from the photo app and hitting the little arrow app at the bottom?
Rich: In Library are all my 6000+ photos. They are also in Recents. If I delete the photos in Recents to save storage space will they also be deleted from the Library? Enjoyed this post on split screen apps.
Thought this was exactly what I wanted to enable me to watch my outside camera whilst working on my iPad. Unfortunately it seems that not all apps will work on a split screen, my camera app Reolink does not work using this. However, as I am the same age as an old person I am finding your tutorials very helpful and interesting.
You know, there are quite a few non-Apple apps that do not work in split screen. I'm not sure why a developer would set their app like this. I run into this from time to time too. Anyway, maybe down the road more apps will work in posit screen. Great comment! Thanks for watching.
Thank you. This will be very helpful. I didn’t know about shortcuts either. Now that I am retired, I am mostly away from my computer and have been using the phone and the iPad for most things. Is there an easy way to drag an email into a new note? If you could add that to your list of things to demonstrate, that would be great.
Hi Rich, thank you so much for the very informative tutorials. I have the shortcuts app on my iPad and my iPhone 13, but having trouble setting up the one on my phone. My problem is setting up a way to use a multi-factor authenticator. An app will want me to type in a code they just sent to my message folder, or email. I'm hoping shortcuts will be able to help.
We have an iPad Air 5th gen op.17.2. We have the app loaded but when we try to open the split screen it won’t load and keeps running. Any suggestions? Thanks. And, we really enjoy the videos. .
Nice video ( *again* ) Rich! I've played around with shortcuts on my iPhone 13 mini and my iPhone SE 2022 (3rd gen). As a programmer in a previous life (I'm in my 'retirement' job now as a Security Professional) I have found Apple Shortcuts pretty darn robust in what they can do. I had four shortcuts that I made on my own and I was able to follow what you were doing and get them onto my iPhone SE 3 smartphone home screen as a widget. *Much nicer* when the shortcuts are grouped together as a 'widget' on the home screen.
Hi Steven - yeah, I hope I didn't get over my skis on this video. I know this was a little more complicated for some users. But I sure hope it ends up being helpful.
@@RichBowlin BTW, I *really* like your website. Everything is there making it easier to use than fumbling around with RUclips all the time! Thank you for creating and hosting it!
Another way to get Safari browser content is to share it to Reminders, believe it or not. Highlight it and share it to a folder in Reminders. And a link to the actual content also gets embedded into Reminders as well. Easy, simple and super handy. I'm coming from the perspective of iPhones only as I don't yet have an iPad, but I would think it works the same in both operating systems.
I'm afraid your stuck with those numbers. I think it has to do with how things fit on the home screen. I'd love to be able to have a custom number too.
9:12 Rich, thank you for your wonderful lessons!!! They are so simple and helpful!!!! I’m having trouble on this lesson right at this point and wondered if you could help me know what I’m missing!! I get to the point of the Home Screen, getting them to jiggle, and clicking on the plus sign, however, after clicking on the plus sign, it brings up the widget part, however, I don’t see the ones I created. Just like shop WalMart, then a set of 4 boxes, but not the ones we created. It had one square for shopping Walmart, then 4 squares with shopping Walmart and 3 other apps, and the 8 boxes"..but not ours. What did I do wrong? Also, one other question that actually came up while working on writing you ! I’m
I also, have another issue, it happened again when I was writing my first post to you. When I’m typing I will sometimes nod off and my finger will hit the screen and my note in progress will disappear. Unfortunately, that can happen several times in trying to send one note. Is there any way of recovering the note that disappeared?? You would save me so much time and frustration if you can help me w/this!!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you. I was able to create a split window with Safari and Goodnotes using the shortcut. However, when I click on the Safari button alone, the split window also includes Goodnotes. How can I click only on the Safari button to have a full-size window of Safari?
Like your videos. But I am having a problem when I try to do this. When I go to set up the widget, I don’t get the selection of shortcuts I want. It preselects shortcuts and they are not the ones I want. Help
Hello Rich. Quick question. I am trying to figure out how to use Shortcuts, but when I click on "Get Organized, Split Screen 2 Apps," it never opens. I get a spinning circle, but nothing happens. I have the latest Mac software installed, I have restarted my computer, and I have never used this app on my computer before, so I must be missing something. Any thoughts? I also tried the steps you noted on my iPad but the split screen doesn't work their either. Thank you
How do you get Siri to do what the shortcut is supposed to do? I just made a shortcut of notes and contacts split screen and changed the name to “l need to pay my bills” and Siri didn’t have a clue that I was asking it to open that shortcut. Is there something that I need to say differently? Or is opening the split screens a function that Siri doesn’t have?
How do I get to my Home Screen folder in shortcuts widget. It picks the shortcuts in the order they appear earlier in all shortcuts. Hope you are still answering question as several haven’t been answered yet.
Place your finger on the line between the two apps (there's a little gray line in the middle -pu tyour finger on that) then slide left or right to set the size you want. Hope this helps!
Great tutorial, the problem I'm having is that the split screen shortcut is coming up on my iPhone widget along with my iPad widget. Is there a way to make new shortcuts NOT show up on my iPhone widget?
So this shortcut widget is designed for the iPad. While the shortcut will show up on your iPhone it's not designed to be used on the iPhone. I have shortcuts designed for my small iPhone that show up on my computer! I wish Apple would place only the shortcuts on a device that work on that device. Hope this helps!
@@RichBowlin I did find a solution: I made a folder that was only for iPad shortcuts. I put all the shortcuts I want for the iPad in that folder. I had to copy the common ones and rename them. Then when shortcuts are showing in the widget, press and hold, select "edit shortcuts" and select the folder you want. Now I have a set of iPad shortcuts and iPhone shortcuts. I'm sure it would also work on the mac.
I have tried and tried to make the Get Organized options to open. I get nothing but a status wheel. All other short cuts seem to perform correctly. I have been on hold with Apple Care for almost an hour. I have had my tech service try to fix them and nothing works. I have rebooted the computer and have completely reinstalled the Shortcuts App. Do you have any suggestions.
I just tried again and this time I opened shortcuts, clicked the +, typed in split and split screen apps came as a choice, so I chose that.. Then I chose the two apps, safari and notes, saved in my Home Screen folder. Changed the name to safari & notes. It’s on my Home Screen and opens as it should but, although it has the correct name in the shortcuts app, it still says split screen on my desktop. I changed the name again, but it will not change on my home screen. Is there a way I can delete the app and download it again? I’m sorry to keep bothering you.
I went through the entire video and had trouble adding apps to the split screen. When I click choose a search box opens and tells me there is no such thing as messages or photos. Sometimes I can get the list to come in as shows in your video on your iPad. I got the four choices finally set up. I added them to the Home Screen folder. Got them on my desktop, but when I try to open say safari and notes, a check mark comes in the top right hand corner, but it will not open in split screen. I am running the latest updates, I rebooted my iPad. It’s an iPad Pro which is a few years old, but working fine. I’ve been using computers sine 1996, so I can do a lot, but this is stumping me completely! Can you help me? Thanks, I think this is a great video as far as step by step.
Hi Peggy! Sorry you're having trouble with this. I'm not sure what's going on. How frustrating! My guess is that somehow you've chosen the wrong action in Shortcuts. I just can't think of anything else. If you're not ready to give up, I'd start from scratch again with just one split screen shortcut and see if you can get it to work. I wish I could help more.
@@RichBowlin I tried with just safari and notes. I have it on my desktop and when I click it, a notice comes down from the top which says safari & notes | shortcuts and a ✔ but it doesn’t open.
Nice video - when making a widget the selection only seems to be from the first shortcuts listed in "all shortcuts". So if I want to create a widget from those in a folder I don't seem to be able to.
@@RichBowlin I work with local seniors assisting with tech issues via an organization called Marin Villages - I will be recommending they subscribe to your channel.
I enjoyed this segment. I set up a shortcut for Gmail and Google Calendar. I then decided to delete that shortcut. However now when I click on my Gmail icon on my Home Screen, it still brings up the Gmail/Calendar split screen. Am I doing something wrong.
So there are two or three things I should have added to this video. Answering your question is one of them. In order to get back to just Gmail, you'll need to slide Google Calendar off the screen. You do this by touching between the two apps and then just sliding left (or right depending on your layout) to remove the app you don't want to see. I thought I'd made a great video but I think I left out a few things. Sorry about that. But thanks for watching.
When you first choose a widget to add to the screen, you can swipe the widget to the left to reveal different sizes. This is not the case with all widgets, but it is for the Calendar app. Hope this helps!
Hi. When I try to add the shortcut widget it doesn't show me the split screen shortcuts I created so that I can choose them. It shows me some others but not those.
I'd like to simply have the folder you make on the home screen rather than the shortcuts app, which first has to be opened, then locate your folder, then open the folder. Any way to do that?
Not directly. The only thing that can go on the home screen are app icons and widgets. Or, in the alternative, you can place the Files app in the dock. This might help.
@@RichBowlin that’s a great idea. Thank you. You are one of my treasured channels not just for the information but for your persona , demeanor, pace and personality. A gift to us seniors
Rich I followed your instructions, selected the split screen shortcut option, and created a Safari/Notes shortcut. But when I went back to the shortcuts screen and tried to click again on the Split Screen button the + sign had been replaced with a check mark. When it opened up and asked me to select the first app those App menu didn’t drop down I just got,a search box. What am I doing wrong?
I"m not sure. It sounds as though the shortcut wasn't completely setup in the beginning. You might go back to the Shortcuts app, long press on the problem shortcut, delete it, and start over, Since it's such a quick setup, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes. I sure hope this helps!
I’m in my 30s but I like watching these because it’s easy to follow

@@RichBowlin BTW, I *really* like your website. Everything is there making it easier to use than fumbling around with RUclips all the time! Thank you for creating and hosting it!
Another way to get Safari browser content is to share it to Reminders, believe it or not. Highlight it and share it to a folder in Reminders. And a link to the actual content also gets embedded into Reminders as well. Easy, simple and super handy.
I'm coming from the perspective of iPhones only as I don't yet have an iPad, but I would think it works the same in both operating systems.
Perhaps already mentioned here but I could not open gallery on Wifi until I turned Bluetooth off. Took a minute to figure out. 😮
When I go to add the widget group it’s not there as an option to add. When I search for the folder it doesn’t find it.
Thank you. How can I group widgets for my home screen. The limitation is either 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16. Can I customise this to 6
I'm afraid your stuck with those numbers.
Rich, my “split screen” is simply 2 screens-they are different sizes and are overlapping. How do I get a 50/50 split screen?
@@karljay7473 Great solution!
hi Rich, I have partially installed shortcuts, but I still don't like it. how can i restore everything. Kind regards, Kees from Holland
hi Rich, that post about reverting shortcuts has been resolved. thanks and regards, Kees from Holland
I'm not sure what's going on. I wish I could be more help. I hope you get things worked out. Good luck.
Saw your response below - I need to edit the widget to select the folder - (could be more intuitive - but that's hardly your fault!)
My bad. I should have shown how to do that. Thanks for watching.

@@ColinCrawford Wow! Thanks so much!
Thank you!
How do I make widgets wider? …for example your widget for Calendar & Reminders shows as Calendar and Rem. Mine just shows as Calendar? Thanks
When you first choose a widget to add to the screen, you can swipe the widget to the left to reveal different sizes. This is not the case with all widgets, but it is for the Calendar app. Hope this helps!
Thanks, your videos are well done.
How did you access the home folder 1?
All I see is all shortcuts
