The Cartoon and Toyline were my favorites from the 80's.

    I remember this originally aired as a 5 part episode. Keep in mind this was the 80s. The idea of a series finale was extremely rare (shows just stopped airing unless you were MASH or Hill Street Blues) and never happened for kids cartoon. Every day that week what happened on GI Joe was the talk of the school.

    • @BrotherHead

      This wasn't actually a series finale. At the last minute it changed studios (to DIC) and they did two more seasons of G.I. Joe.

    @AvroBellow 7 лет назад +14

    Nice reference to Dial-Tone. LOL
    I was one of those kids that was thrilled with the Transformers/GI Joe crossover episode in Transformers season 3. I actually really liked Cobra Commander because he was voiced by Chris Latta who also voiced Starscream and their voices were so "over-the-top-evil" that I always laughed at them. Cobra Commander appearing in the Transformers episode as "Snake, the former leader of the terrorist organization that created 'Synthoids'" which was of course, Cobra (as he shouted at the end of the episode) proved that he somehow managed to get himself back to "normal" (whatever normal is for Cobra Commander). So GI Joe: The Movie wasn't in fact the end for him. Unfortunately, as many know,; Chris Latta is no longer with us and without his voice, Starscream and Cobra Commander will never seem real to me ever again.

    The studios involved wanted to have some (80's style) buzz for marketing. As mentioned here, Johnson was huge for starring in Miami Vice; Nelson was a hot ticket because of the Breakfast Club.

    Cobra La was also never brought into the original comic book series despite the deal between Hasbro and Marvel where any action figure created had to be featured in the comic. Larry Hama had stated that it was enough having to include Serpentor and his crazy creation story, but he had to draw the line when it came to Cobra La. As a HUGE fan of the comics, I was very grateful for that decision because I hated the Cobra La stuff.

      The interesting thing was that there was a UK prequel story to the movie in whhich Pythona gave Dr. Mindbender the idea to create Serpentor to replace Cobra Commander. And yeah the UK stuff isn't quite cannon & not written by Mr. Hama but it is an interesting thought.

      Duke was the NCOIC or 1st Sgt of the GI Joe unit. In most US Army units, the highest ranking enlisted is a E-8/1SG or sometimes a Master Sgt. These are normally active duty soldiers near retirement or those who do not plan on going on to E-9/CSM.

      Video Game of Life I liked the idea of Cobra La, but hated the idea that Cobra Commander came from them. He should've still been a used car salesman who, while on a trek, discovered their lair, and was made an offer to have his idea of taking over the world be funded by Cobra La, hence the name Cobra. And when he fails, he's still put on trial. The rest of the movie can still play out the way it did.

    I first watched this movie when it broadcast on TV, and they *hadn't* dubbed it over that Duke "went into a coma (then recovered by the end)". He canonically died in that broadcast airing of the movie (which really added to the darkness and that added to the whole Lovecraftian feel).

    As a kid watching the movie on cable I don't remember the over-dub saying Duke was in a coma. I was pretty sad that he died. Then about 12 years later I bought the movie on VHS and was like "huh, they changed the ending so that Duke didn't die" when all the Joes cheer at the end in a long distance camera shot where you can't see anyone talking, they say something like "good news, Duke's ok and recovered". Weird, but too little too late. My childhood was forever changed.
