  • HIKING THE GRAND CANYON RIM TO RIM TO RIM | Hiking Gear and Food I Brought // One of the questions I get asked all the time is what kind of hiking gear I bring with me and what kind of food I pack for my hiking and backpacking trips. Thinking about hiking the Grand Canyon Rim-To-Rim or the Rim-To-Rim-To-Rim Hike and have no idea what kind of hiking gear and food you’d need to bring with you? In this video, I’ll go over all of the hiking gear I brought with me along with the food I carried in my pack for this two day, 50-mile, hiking adventure in Grand Canyon National Park.

    We’ve done R2R as a day hike twice - and my biggest challenge is always trying to determine how much food to bring. I don’t want extra weight, yet always fear not having enough fuel. For that reason I tend to pack way to much food every time. I can never imagine waking up the next morning and doing it again the opposite direction - kudos to you!

    Good comprehensive look at the gear! I haven't tried the Nuun tablets yet, so now I will. I'm always looking to dial in my nutrition for adventure runs like R2R.
    You mention being prone to rolling your ankles. I know you're supported by a shoe company, but have you ever thought about switching to Merrell Trail Gloves, Vapor Gloves, or Lythe Gloves? Or Vivo barefoot? The reason I mention it, is because a shoe with a raise sole and a wide heel (like what you're wearing here) actually promotes the issue you're having. They keep the foot from acting like a hand, and splaying out to have good stable contact with the ground, almost like grabbing it, they keep the foot from pronating properly and transmitting "surface condition" data to the brain (so that the brain can react in nano-seconds to what is happen to your balance), and the flat wide sole under the heel of the shoe, actually pitches the rear of the foot at angles which then cause you to come down hard, rolling that ankle (because the foot didn't get a chance to splay out or transmit surface conditions to the brain). You might wind up really loving them, and it might make for some great content. Nothing feels better on the trails than feet that are really free to be.....feet! I have content about this on my channel, including our '19 R2R. Our favorite trail shoe: Vibram FiveFingers

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 года назад

      Thanks for checking out my video and for the shoe recommendation. Honestly, I roll my ankles in any sort of footwear I use. In the winter time when I'm wearing my hiking boots, my ankles roll less because they have the extra ankle support, which I find is crucial in wet and snowy environments.

      Thank you! Saw your Grand Canyon video and it gave me all the canyon feels. I love that place! Shoes are expensive, especially when going through multiple pairs in one season on a thru-hike. I’m incredibly grateful for Salomon outfitting me with awesome gear so I can keep getting out there. The zip ties are mainly for my winter kit should something happen to my snowshoes, but I keep them in my repair kit year round along with duct tape on my trekking poles.😀

    You always list / show an ankle brace in your first aid kit. It looks light weight and handy... everything I look at buying big and bulky. Can you tell us what brace you include in your pack? Thanks! Learning a lot by watching your videos.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  2 года назад

      Great question! The lightweight ankle brace I carry in my first aid kit was actually a gift from a fellow PCT thru-hiker in 2018. I was in Washington and kept rolling my ankle, so she showed mercy on me and gave me the ankle brace she had in her pack. That ankle brace helped me get to Canada without crying everyday in pain. Since it was a gift, I have no idea where my hiker friend got it and there's no tag on the ankle brace telling me what brand it is. Sorry I don't have more information to give you about the brace. Glad you're learning a lot from watching my videos!

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 года назад +1

      Awesome! Love it! Have so much fun on your trip. As for the shuttles, you will need to make a reservation with the shuttle company directly. Last year (in 2020) they weren't running the shuttles at all because of COVID. I would call or visit their website to see if they plan on running this year. In a normal year, they run multiple shuttles a day, but they do fill up so I'd highly suggest making a reservation ahead of time. Good luck!

    Simple and sweet on the gear. Did you weigh the pack? I never weigh mine going in, but I weigh it at phantom ranch. There is a weigh scale were people can pay to have their gear taken out by mules. I, know. Many people get down there with too much stuff then have it packed back out by the mules.
    Thanks for the video.

    Too many warm clothes? I've done the south rim - north rim - sough rim trip last November (in 5 days); Obviously we needed warm clothes for the evening/night (temperatures as low as 32F); but during the day I've never worn more than a short and a long merino wool t-shirt (plus a thin wind breaker when it rained or was windy; near the rim, temperatures were as low as 25F); What I did have during most days, was long johns...

    Hiking my first R2R in a week and a half...thanks for sharing your info! Quick question--are we able to use a trowel and poop behind a rock if needed in the canyon? Do a lot of people do this when not near a bathroom? Not judging, purely curious!

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you can use a trowel if you need to when in the canyon, but I doubt you'll need to. There are pit toilets along the trail, near a lot of the water stops. If you do need to use a trowel, make sure you're at least 100-200 feet from both the trail and/or a water source, dig a hole that's at least 6 inches deep and pack out the tp. Good luck!

      I do prefer the cup when on trail, especially when hiking long-distances. I liked using the cup so much, I've even been using it in life after trail.There is definitely a learning curve with using these, which is why I practiced using one for a few months before I got out on trail. I highly recommend them! Less trash to pack out when you're on trail and so much better for the environment. Once you get used to using a cup, they're a breeze to use on a regular basis.
