  • Today we take a look at the famous $200 gold coins produced by the Royal Australian Mint.
    Despite having a higher gold content, would you prefer these or a sovereign?
    Thanks for watching and special thanks to Barry from Max Stern and Co. for letting me take some photos and videos of some of their stock!

      Absolutely! I'd definitely need to consult with my accountant and make sure I don't get myself into any hot water with potential financial advice but that's a great idea!

    I own both, but in my opinion the sovereign is a nicer looking coin.
    I remember when I was a young kid back in the 1980s watching a TV commercial promoting the koala $200 gold coin, $200 was quite a bit of money back then.

    Hey Matt ,
    thanks for your help on Thursday morning with me and my friend selling some of our stack before Christmas , I ended up buying the 1986 $200 coin which is my first one of these type of gold coins from Max Stern on the same day as I was talking to you about it and the 1986 uncirculated version didn’t come in a flip it came in a blue card folder with a lot of info about the coin and series.

    I like the Tassie devil and emu. They have proved a good investment i think for the people who purchased them when they came out. The first one cost 205.00 and you had to order them from the commonwealth bank i think. The price went up considerably over time and people stopped bying them.

    It is confusing that some earlier year bullion coins attract GST and some don't. There must be some confused people in the ATO. Anyway, I'd just count any GST as additional premium above spot.

    For stacking, 10 grams of 22ct. makes it an easy weight to work with. I still favor sovereigns , though. Btw, don’t you have to pay tax on 22ct in Australia?? Nice vid, might have to get myself one just for comparison. J.

    • @ThompsonsCoins
      @ThompsonsCoins  Год назад

      Thanks for watching Jamie! Tax is applicable on all non bullion coins so anything that is 22ct will incur GST :)

    • @tslee8236

      @@ThompsonsCoins If you exchange a $2 nickel copper coin for A$8, you have to pay gst. But if you exchange the same $2 coin for US$5.5 you are just exchanging money at a very attractive exchange rate. 😅😂😂

    • @ThompsonsCoins

      The design was a culmination of a few ideas I had about how I wanted the business to "feel" as well as a nod to the city I live in (Melbourne). The building featured is Flinders Street station which is a major transport hub and one that I pass through on a regular basis. ☺️

    Yes but it's against the law to melt down your not aloud to deface the Queen .. your just should be talking about the face value .. get your words straight .. it's just a coin like a stamp 😊👍✌️

    • @ThompsonsCoins
      @ThompsonsCoins  Год назад

      I actually did a video highlighting the law regarding melting down coins which you may find interesting 😊
      Coins and stamps in this sense are very different, I've never heard of someone destroying a stamp in order to convert any intrinsic value into currency.
      I'm also not certain that the same laws apply to postage stamps as they are intended to be cancelled/used which could conceivably be a form of defacement. I'd have to double check that though!
      Thanks for watching! 😊
