Let inmates disrespect you when comes to their visits and rec time also chow. Just remember these little things when a inmate want extra time his or her visit or want an extra time in the shower at recreation. Finally, when passing out food trays during lockdown when you have extra food. Just remember what you said to me the other day. No I will not give anything other what you supposed to have nothing more nothing less. Go home treat yourself to a steak dinner.

I got called the "N" word the other night by an inmate. It was very disrespectful and loud. It was heard all over our small facility.

It happens. But how you react will stop that from happening again.

Thats why they are in there. They yell it from a large group. An inmate yelled from a group that I was a B@tch. I asked all of them how would they feel if someone spoke to their mother like that. I never get upset. Maintain professionalism. The inmates state themselves that if you get a DR from her you earned it and she will cuff you with professionalism and with a smile (with a zero cocky attitude). Our job is to lead. I never show my bad mood. Don't give them the ammo.

You and your guests give great advice and to all the other CO's I just want to say, listen to this advice, be yourselves, but most of all realize the job you do is without a doubt one of the toughest in the country and take pride in that no matter what anyone else says. You are my brothers and sisters on the thin grey line.

That's one of the most difficult things that I deal with in my work.
I've had inmates call me names that I wouldn't even think about saying to another human being.
Sometimes when I go home I ruminate hours about what I should have said to the inmate. I maintain my professionalism and proceed to discipline them. When an inmate is disrespectful he is violating a rule disrupting the environment.
It happens every 2 or 3 weeks which bothers me.

Remember, this is not about a win / loss. This is more about building respect. The advice in the video can help with that.

Treat prison inmates as you would patients in a mental hospital . . . they are both in a prison or a locked ward because they can't control themselves.

It makes me sick that people who choose a profession in corrections aren’t doing so to try and make a difference and because they want to HELP BE APART OF THE PROCESS OF REHABILITATING PEOPLE

I just started working units on my own thid past Friday,on my first day I had an inmate try to make fun of me saying "I dident know they hired 14yos here" he's right I'm 18 and do look like I'm 14 lol but he dident make the statement in a joking manner he was saying it to try to insult me so I said "No,im 15 and going home tonight, you?" Then his "homeboys" all laughed and he felt dumb. Might not of been the best way for me to react since I don't want to be in a fit for tat situation but it felt right in the moment. I just wanted to show that I don't care about their insults.
