Overly friendly inmates is a huge red flag. Treat all of them as if they are trying to get over on u. Always talk good about other co’s in front of them. Never let them try to divide and conquer

Sometimes it is absolutely true that there inmates that are not manipulating Correctional Officer. Yes it is absolutely true, because of the fact that there are innocent people who are in prison who were framed for a crime that they didn't commit. Now in cases like these then they are not being manipulated, and that needs to be accounted for, and that is not the same as what this is about.
It doesn't matter how long you've been in corrections, this is always a very important topic that every facility goes through. Thank you for speaking on it.
One thing that really resonates with me is leverage. These manipulators are looking for anything they can use as leverage to get what they want. We can NEVER lose sight of that. They could care less about being your friend. For them you are a means to an end.

Connie, that was great. No one knows what to expect when you first start. We are all initially blind at the beginning. Some stay blind. You took the instruction and made the connection in your head about the reality. It's a very good example to use, very instructional. Your story will help someone somewhere.

I think it’s a matter of introspection and like Anthony mentioned, listening to your gut. Some folks downplay the power of their intuition and don’t take action. I’ve learned over the years not to do that, even when I don’t have all the evidence. I certainly hope that the brave men and women in the field can relate and will take action if they find themselves on a questionable path.
Another indicator of staff is too close to inmates is when they start to talk about being their friends, that's a red light.

I love this topic and I see inmates pull this manipulation card on a daily basis. Sometimes inmates dorm porters tries to manipulate an officer by telling them to lie about dorm food tray count to kitchen officer just to get extra trays. They start by telling you how they don’t get good times hoping you lie about tray counts. They always try to snitch on a different officer telling you what that officer said about you. They talk down on officers telling you how officer such and such dress good and you don’t. I always use Tv, telephone and home wave visit as tool to attain and sustain control. I also do my locker inspection and confiscate all of their contrabands (extra uniforms beddings, food from previous meal pass). Great job and keep uploading these videos

You know I made friends with a female C.O. once in Lancaster C.I back in 2000. Yeah I had to use dumb inmates to break the ice. ,but all I did was give her a heads up on the mood of the dorm at the beginning of her shift. I liked her she was respectful to us without being overly firm. It made sense to try to help her keep the peace. My point is some inmates have your best interest in mind. Not everybody wants to hem you up. You should try to learn how to tell one type of manipulation from another.

Paraphrasing: You don't have to be confrontational, but you MUST set boundaries. Also, if it's OK for one inmate, then there is another and another. Nip it in the bud.

One of the things ive noticed,especially cadets most of them dont realize inmates aren't in with us,we are in there with them,they have 24 hours 7 days a week to play games and think of ways to manipulate,its all games to them they have nothing to lose besides a DR and a charge.

i ws manipulated for a long time by an inmate. i’m not a naive stupid woman but it happened. i wasted a lot of years & have many regrets. I prayed & ask God to open my eyes & help me to see it for what it really is. Heal my mind that became brainwashed. They’re MASTERS at the game and it’s soooo easy to get trapped. be very careful!!!

Ive been in Security for 9 years.
These videos have helped me tremendously when dealing with individuals who present themselves as regular difficult people. Homelessness is a big issue and i have found that alot of the individuals i have encountered have served time. As a security guard in socal at 3am it is truly scary to imagine what strangers on the street are capable of if i fail to keep my guard up. I reference the megans law website alot as well to be double sure.

Russ Hamilton I agree with you Keith and Russ. We can walk in thinking we know and have no idea. My street sense was non-existent; I learned everyday. I had to show up and be present; not distracted. Many tried to forge social bonds based on observations; they studied all of our movements and interactions with our colleagues, including those with the IQ of a hammer (I like that one Keith).

Most men seem to assume or fantacize that pretty young women find them appealing and want/need their attention. Most sociopaths use the very real need that most young women have for attention to try to groom.
Keith, good points. Intellectual manipulation can be an inmate makinging a Co feel, "smarter that, better that or more competent than." The bigger the ego, the more hot air can be pumped into it.
You’re absolutely correct and what better way to manipulate than to get someone fresh and new; before long you’re already down the path of no return. One things for sure, male or female, you must know who you are and always keep your wits about you.
@@constantinealleyne3927 therein lies the rub. Who genuinely knows who they are at 18, or even 20? That means it is more important to teach these things to the young men and women who are just starting out. An old scoundrel like me with a few decades of dealing with miscreants and malcontents, is a bit different. Very young, new officer often lack the life experiences to cope with daily evil and life balance. It would be interesting to see if she of entry into this profession, suicide and PTSD. I really would love to examine and analyze that data.
I concluded my physical examination a week ago, patiently anticipating an email from the Eastern Shore Corrections Institute. The process seems to be moving at a leisurely pace. 😅
My former spouse (may he RIP) and I both worked this environment. Him 26 urs before he passed. Myself 20 yrs. Our daughter who is now 20 just applied. This is not something that he nor I would have wanted. But she did. I have been forwarding her this video along with your others, all night.

xephael I hope all is well. the guidelines are published. The laws are published an updated yearly. As for institutional rules...their should be a handbook given to the inmates when they enter the facility that they will be residing at.
@@TierTalk Yes, for example the handbook. Shouldn't that be available to families or general public as well? I've found a number of agencies don't seem to like sharing policies or guidelines...and in some cases you have to file FOIA. This is not just specific to correctional institutions.
If a inmate was going to be incarcerated at your facility wouldn't you want them to already be familiar with the handbook from day 1?

Anthony, Very good discussion. In the Intelligence Field, the adage is : one time is accidental, twice is coincidence, but three times is enemy action. In other words don't be too concerned about random occurrences, but be very concerned if a pattern develops. I also agree with Russ, that a certain degree of "salesmanship" is normal and we all do it. But the inmates are out to exploit and use other people, especially Corrections Staff.

I hear what you are saying but what is the difference between what you said and thinking about a situation that happened with a inmate and what you should have done or would do next time a situation happens.
I have been in situations like this when I spoke to the officer the officer in private. We had a good working relationship and he took my advice and appreciated my forwardness.
But it all about the approach and timing. If you wait to long, they may convince themselves what they are doing is right.

A lot of inmates try to talk their way out of write ups. It always amused me. I was guilty of almost all my write ups and never complained except for the couple times i was innocent. Ican never get mad a a guard just for doing his job.

They're taking applications for c.o.s in my area to train and go to the academy. I've been thinking about applying but idk if theyd take me considering I'm 36 and have never worked in corrections. I have a clean record, no kids, no wife, basically a clean slated grey man who doesn't stand out but I'm partial to a structured environment and thrive sticking to a schedule even though that may sound weird.
All you can do it go out for the position and be the best you can be and let the chips fall where they may. You got this. Say confident. Age is but a number.

I’m a CO and have been working for the ADOC for 8 months now. I just want to know what are we supposed to do if we’re on hospital run and sitting on a undisciplined inmate? We can’t spray them so what are other options that we can do to handle uncooperative or combative inmates

@@Tabby-bs3yo No, we carry a pistol and two magazines when we go out for hospital duty.
We carry a pistol and 2 mags, and the second officers carries a tazer.. We are authorized to use the tazer to quell any disturbances.. Notify the OIC, they call the duty warden to get approval and it's done..
I have a question my roommate is always sending different amounts of money through cash app to all these people that she doesn’t know for her son in prison !! I told her he’s serving out his sentence it’s not supposed to be a cushion stay! I’m nervous that she’s going to get in some kind of trouble for doing that something seems very off!!!
She could find herself getting in trouble as well. She don’t know what her money is buying. They could be doing a cash app because they are buying stuff they should not be having. Plus they don’t have access to a cash app in the Prison. To be on the safe side..she may need to end that before she goes down a path she can come back from

Week 1 of the C.O Training: Still haven't got our polices and procedures inmate handbook yet. However I was tested doing a search in inmates cell and pretty much failed because we hadn't been taught that yet and the Sargent I was shadowing didn't correct me (I was in a cell with 4 inmates searching through their stuff and the Sargent was outside watching me) after the whole pod was searched by me, he took me into his office and said, "You'll only get five chances, verbal, write up, etc then your out."

Some correctional officers are also police officers. It depends on the state, but I know in mine the ones that are also police wear a badge that says Police, and sometimes a uniform inside the Prisons to distinguish them.

When inmates ask me for something that's not ok, it pisses me off, so I game them right back. "Hey CO, can I have a dip?" "Sure." And then I act like I'm going to give them the dip in my mouth.
Hell where I work they will pick it up off the ground and have to be made to put it down.. They would probably love it directly from ur mouth..
I give them what they give me and use their own words against them best lines are "I'm just doing my time" "I'm sorry I was asleep when the answer to that question you just asked me was given" "Yeah I got you a pack of cigs/food at the restaurant, all you gotta do is go pick it up" "I didn't become a CO to get rich" and my favorite line "If I become a dirty officer then you are gunna get a dirty officer"
I was always taught that if their lips are moving that they are lying.
I have very little sympathy for inmates and criminals in general so I'd highly doubt an inmate could manipulate me because I wouldn't want to do anything for them.
Wow. What you are talking about, "thinking about an inmate at home" means that you are allowing intimacy or emotional support and RELYING ON or NEEDING ATTENTION from that person because they have made you feel needed, special, important. Very normal to look forward to familiar faces.A lack of emotional support from peers creates a gap. Sounds like inmates are predatorily looking to fill that gap, become that emotional support and establish intimacy through familiarity.

I don’t know if PA has the recognition of law enforcement. Some states do though.

I myself am thought of myself as respectful and generally don't give a shit. Even I tried to see what I could get away with. General rule is. If it's there they will take it. So you should always be alert for what you do or say that gives leverage.

Ok you used borrowing a pencil as an example. How do you know if the inmate is being genuine or manipulative? Do you just deny all inmates anything they ask, cause I would think you want some level of respect between you and the inmates without being manipulated. How do you do that while earning their respect.

When you live in the Midwest and the government pays you check but you’re too simple to ruminate about it and frivolously spend your biweekly income in the check but not on rims or attire , instead it’s a 100 pounds of sediment for that random home improvement project and that half-finished new deck ,
Thanks for sharing. IMO, Manipulation is a two way street, CO's and inmates are human beings. Intelligence and strategy is not exclusive to the prison officials. Just like, knowledge, attention and retention of the law is not exclusive to bar card Attorneys. The most valuable and powerful thing anyone has, inmates and CO's included, is their "mind." Thoughts become things. No pun intended.
