  • "Whip It" is a popular song by the American new wave band Devo. It was released as a single in 1980 and later included on their third studio album, "Freedom of Choice." The song became one of Devo's biggest hits and remains one of their most recognizable songs.
"Whip It" features catchy synthesizer melodies, driving basslines, and quirky lyrics. The song's lyrics are open to interpretation but are generally seen as encouraging individuals to take control of their lives and overcome obstacles. The line "Whip it good" is often associated with the song and has become a popular catchphrase.
The music video for "Whip It" also contributed to its popularity. Directed by Gerald Casale, one of Devo's founding members, the video showcases the band members wearing their iconic red energy dome hats and performing choreographed moves with whips. The video received heavy rotation on MTV, helping to boost the song's popularity.
Overall, "Whip It" is considered a classic of new wave music and remains an enduring symbol of Devo's distinctive style and sound.

Hearing the song back in the early 80's was a revelation! Synths, drum machines and guitar was not the normal band setup back then but it definitely was a foretaste of what bands look and sound like now! Devo were like musical prophets!

Yeah, people forget, their name means 'de-evolution.' This genre broke away from punk and they were the first group through the gate into that new genre. Looking backwards it might feel pat, but at the time it was groundbreaking and highly original in its structure.

Gerald Casale and Bob Lewis were art students who came across the idea of de-evolution as a source of humor in the late '60s. After being at the center of the Kent State Massacre in 1970, they got more serious about the idea that humanity was regressing, not evolving. Their earliest works are good examples about proto-punk music that joined the under-current of music from 60s through the 70s before Punk became a defined thing. (also Velvet Underground, MC5, the Stooges, the Bad Brains - even The Who at times) Devo's early video for "Jocko Homo" 1976, puts it out there pretty clearly. Another classic is their deconstructed version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction."
By the way, the tragedy at Kent State was also witnessed by Chrissie Hynde, who was herself at the birth of punk, but in England where she worked at Marshall McClaren's clothing shop, Sex. She left school after the massacre and went to London to be a musician. Before becoming a success in her own right, she taught the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones to play his guitar right. Chris Butler, who would become a leading member of the band, The Waitresses, was another witness to the attack. And then there is Joe Walsh of the Eagles, who was just visiting Kent from another college on the day of the fateful attack - he also decided to quit school and pursue music.

DEVO was my favorite band as a little kid. They came along at a time when I was so desperate to hear anything that sounded different from the classic rock that the radio played endlessly. But since they weren't played on the radio, I remember putting a cassette recorder up to the TV speaker when they played on Saturday Night Live. I think they played Workin' on a Coal Mine, and their cover of The Stones Satisfaction, and I used to listen to those two songs over and over on that crummy cassette recording.

  • @honkydynamite

They apparently made the video after the song became a hit - and the storyboard of the video was a reaction to what the mainstream understanding of the song had come to be - a masturbation song and they parodied that perception in the video amongst other things. Interviews they gave at the time Whip It came out said the song was originally inspired by the american author Thomas Pynchon's book Gravity's Rainbow that parodied the can do philosophy that he saw prevalent in american culture at the time. Devo put great emphasis on the videos of their songs, sometimes writing a song to fit a video concept that already had in mind. Other Devo songs and videos you could react to are - Freedom of Choice, Beautiful World, Love Without Anger, Jocko Homo, Satisfaction just to name a few.
