Shiny car, near-matte Bender. Bender is a slob who runs on alcohol - his skin should have the muted lustre of oxidised pewter. His eyes are lenses though, so they should probably also be shiny, but maybe with some dust in the corners.
I mean Bender keeps saying "Bite my shiny metal ass" So i think it'll have to be shiny! Also LOVE YOUR GUY'S STUFF!!! I have been watching punished props for a looooooooong time! Love the fallout stuff! ( i even made my own codsworth with the files from that video! And i gotta say it torned out great! All thanks to the video! Greetings from Belgium!
Love the in depth sanding video. Would love to see a shiny car body finish. I think Bender should be a flat metal, not too 'polished" shiny, but like a raw steel colour 🙂
I just love this project and the pacing, so many creators make it seem like projects like this only take a few hours 🤔 Semi gloss bender (metal paint with a satin varnish maybe? Dulls down the metallic a bit) and shiny car, wax on wax off 😂
7:14 A bit of helpful advice that I have taken on board with regards to mixing filler/bondo, I noticed that you've added way to much hardener here. The perfect mixing ratio is around a pea sized amount of gardener to a golfball sized amount of filler. You did about 4 pea sized amounts of hardener to slightly less than a golfball size of filler, which can not only really reduce the time you have to work with it, but also make the filler more brittle, reduce adhesion and make it more susceptible to peeling and cracking too. Ed China's advice on these matters has never let me down.
Maybe do some paint swatches on 3D printed squares to decide on the paint job? Also, if this whole video was about that overhead projector I think I still would have been happy :)
Bender refers to himself as "Foghat Gray" in the episode where he meets the gold Bender from Universe B. Also in the pilot episode where Bender first says the line Fry responds with "It doesn't look so shiny to me". The best "in universe" explanation is that he's referring to the butt plate that his legs which his legs go into which is rarely seen. In a later season Bender confesses that he polished his ass with Fry's toothbrush.
Alright, I finally ordered the Fusion course. Used the $10 I saved to buy your buddy’s Sanding Book. I have a bum right wrist, and am right handed, so any sanding tips are of great value. Happy Thanksgiving. I’m really enjoying the Bendermobile series.
I have a set of metal files I like to fair out high spots. My favorite at the beginning is a 4 way rasp. I think bender's car would be a blue metallic flake. Bender would look cool with a graphite powder rubbed finish.
I would probably go for a semi-gloss or a satin finish. By the way have you considered using something like the molotol liquid chrome pen for the inside of your headlights to make them brighter? Like I know it takes a long time to dry but maybe it's a good idea?
Where did you dig up an overhead projector? I haven’t seen one of those in a long time, a long time. Great work on the build, I’m sure it’ll turn out great whichever way you go. I might chase on screen appearance as you mentioned.
In the first episode Bender tells Fry to "bite my shiny metal ass", Fry responds "doesn't look so shiny to me" to which Bender responds, "shinier than yours, meatbag". So it seems it needs to be shinier than skin.....but not by much. Satin?
Fun fact for quickly placing sand paper on the sander curl the paper up and line up only 2 holes and the rest will line up pefectly little trick i learned working in a cabinet shop
@punishedprops Bigger surfaces require multiple thin layer of resin for minimal dripping. I usually flash cure the single sections, the process is quite finicky 😂
Hey Bill, have you considered giving both Bender and the car a two dimensional matte cell shaded paint job? I feel like that would look great. Like the animation has jumped off the screen. Looks great so far. Cheers.
tbh i think the car should have a gloss finish and bender shouldnt be metallic but flat colors like mentioned, probably in a semigloss finish. cant wait for the next episode!!
I know i have no real say in the matter, but I am also torn between the visual cues provided by the show (matte) and the persistent catchphrase (shiny). Is there some happy medium between the two? Where it only reflects lights of high intensity but only has a normal matte highlight area in normal lighting? If only I wasn't so indecisive... or am I?
"brushed" or "satin" is probably the medium? I think a high-gloss Bender would certainly look all wrong and would tend towards the grey he's shown as. We never see reflections in his surface (apart from like specific jokes), he's always an even grey.
It's certainly something to try, but I think if in doubt "accurate to the appearance that people recognize visually" (matte grey) is much more important than "accurate to the canon description" ("shiny metal").
I would say, paint it matt to match the cartoon and even add the black outlines for the cell shaded look... wouldn't look right if it was all shiny.... Looking great so far though, can't wait to see the end result
@punishedprops and Bender feels like someone who would be shiny, we just don't see it in animation because as a cleanup animator and colourist, drawing shiny lighting on a character who is always in the show would kill us.
There is a car painting trend in Japan that makes paint jobs look like anime/manga. Have a look at that and see if there is a take on this that still gives the cartoon/animation vibe
I am a hugh fan of mat colors for cartoons. They are printed on paper that isn't shinny. But also when they want to show shinny they put reflection in the picture. I am thinking of a few car shows where they have painted cars in cartoon style. I would check that out and look into it.
Bender does love to talk about how shiny other parts of his body are, but the simple animation style doesnt really show it lol. I think it could be really fun to have a shiny chrome Bender head! But it might look more accurate to do a two-tone grey or dull metallic finish
Definitely feel like if benders ass is the same color as his head It's gotta be shiny. Maybe a lighter gunmetal. As for the car, I don't remember you ever doing a candy coat on any props so it'd be interesting seeing you go thru that process on Bender's Car. Whatever you pick I look forward to seeing it!
For the lump on the hood, have you seen the way they do old school plaster crown molding? They cut a piece of acrylic to the profile they want, sort of like a trowel, that's shaped like the molding. You could either 3d print, or cut on a laser, or cut by hand, a profile of the curve you want, cover the surface in bondo, and pull the custom trowel over it, leaving the correct curve shape all the way across in one pass. I hope this makes sense.
For this project I've been trying out PETG. It's easy to print and pretty easy to sand. For props I usually like using ABS, but it's such a pain to print with.
The finish for Bender should correspond with the car: if the car is realistic then Bender should be similar; but perhaps not super glossy as there aren't specular highlights illustrated, so either go down the middle with satin or mimic dusty old metal.
Ok, first off..Holy crap..was NOT expecting a nostalgia jump scare with that projector lol. Anyway..bender should be matte or possibly satin, but certainly not glossy or shiny. That would look..off..lol while he DOES refer to his butt as "shiny", he doesn't appear that way.
Whichever method is used for the car in the end should be the same style used for Bender. Not sure which one would be preferable, but mixing styles feels like a bad idea.
Broke: Explaining through high-fidelity Adobe animations 🙄 Woke: Explaining through MS Paint drawings 😮 Bespoke: Explaining through projector drawings 😎
Bender himself should be shiny metalic. The car is a harder choice, it's an old model car in the future so I'd probably say "post apocalyptic matte" but maybe just a slight shiny texture just so it seems more substantial.
The car should be shiny, Bender should be kind of shiny? He is made of metal and asks people to bite his metal ass. But he is also a robot that went through a lot so I guess some of his shiny body is dulled down by now
Thanks for making me feel old with that overhead projector.
Hey I'm right there with you! -Bill
Some of these kids never got a second degree burn from one of those, and it shows 😅
@@punishedprops Same here! Brought back memories of school (both middle school and college)
I remember them
Giving me some serious PTSD flashbacks to my childhood. Had to call in my 17-year-old to show him what life was like when I was in school
Shiny car, near-matte Bender. Bender is a slob who runs on alcohol - his skin should have the muted lustre of oxidised pewter. His eyes are lenses though, so they should probably also be shiny, but maybe with some dust in the corners.
I like your justification. Super creative! 😄

Thank you so much for following along!
I feel the only part of Bender that is shiny is his a**
@@punishedprops i imagine that his ass is the only shiny thing
Wow the sound of that overhead projector just took me back to school.... love it.
Same!
love it Bill . . . matte finish for sure! LOL
I’m gonna print a little Bender head to do some paint tests.
Love the in depth sanding video. Would love to see a shiny car body finish. I think Bender should be a flat metal, not too 'polished" shiny, but like a raw steel colour 🙂

Great idea! I’ll do some paint tests before we make any decisions. 👍
bender being Shiny Would make Bender More Real than what we see in Futurama
Matte car, Shiny Bender! Contrast always adds depth and helps legibility!
+1 for contrast! I’m gonna do some paint tests. I wonder what Bender would look like in a brushed aluminum.
Bender refers to himself as "Foghat Gray" in the episode where he meets the gold Bender from Universe B.

The best "in universe" explanation is that he's referring to the butt plate that his legs which his legs go into which is rarely seen. In a later season Bender confesses that he polished his ass with Fry's toothbrush.
You’ve done your research.
You have to give Bender the polished graphite treatment, aka The Mandalorian helmet finish. That would look completely badass!!
Any techniques to mimic polished aluminum? That could make some contrast between Bender and his car, so they both aren't the same level of shine.
Ooh I do like the idea of a brushed aluminum finish.
Alright, I finally ordered the Fusion course. Used the $10 I saved to buy your buddy’s Sanding Book. I have a bum right wrist, and am right handed, so any sanding tips are of great value.

I think bender's car would be a blue metallic flake. Bender would look cool with a graphite powder rubbed finish.
Great call on the rasp!
Thanks for reminding me of my age. As far as sanding. I use a foot sander to help smooth prints. It works wonders.
Oh neat!
@punishedprops it's fast and doesn't heat the plastic at all.
I can’t wait to see this project come to life
It’s getting so exciting!
I used to do that, set up the overhead projector for school assembly, when I was in school in the 80's.
S
Those were simpler times.
@punishedprops yes singing 'morning has broken' every Monday morning
I read the title and thought this was going to be a video about using an electric toothbrush as a tiny detail sander. I've heard it works well.
Satin on both Bender and the car! That way you could do a cell shading look too, which would look ace!
I was leaning that way!
I would probably go for a semi-gloss or a satin finish.
By the way have you considered using something like the molotol liquid chrome pen for the inside of your headlights to make them brighter? Like I know it takes a long time to dry but maybe it's a good idea?
Love this series!!
Smooth-On makes XTC-3D to smooth prints. Could be worth checking out. At least as a starting step.
That stuff is pretty nice too.
Where did you dig up an overhead projector? I haven’t seen one of those in a long time, a long time.
Great work on the build, I’m sure it’ll turn out great whichever way you go. I might chase on screen appearance as you mentioned.
I found it at a Goodwill in Seattle. Got the screen there too!
@ nice!
Gloss or Matte... neither? Satin? So that they are 'shiney', but not glaringly?
Yeah that's why I'm leaning towards satin.
I’m a teacher. Still think the overhead has some advantages over the projector.
They're wildly practical.
In the first episode Bender tells Fry to "bite my shiny metal ass", Fry responds "doesn't look so shiny to me" to which Bender responds, "shinier than yours, meatbag". So it seems it needs to be shinier than skin.....but not by much. Satin?
Yeah that’s why I’m feeling satin.
Matte for bender. Maybe matte or satin for the car. It’s a cartoon after all.
Yeah I'm leaning that way.
Great work dude 💕💕
Thanks so much!
Fun fact for quickly placing sand paper on the sander curl the paper up and line up only 2 holes and the rest will line up pefectly little trick i learned working in a cabinet shop
A compact OHP! That is awesome. I want one
It’s really amazing!
The easiest way I've found to deal with layer lines is uv resin. Bigger surfaces are more difficult do work on but you cut sanding time drastically
That's such a great idea!
Cheers.
That’s definitely an option.
I need an overhead projector like that...
tbh i think the car should have a gloss finish and bender shouldnt be metallic but flat colors like mentioned, probably in a semigloss finish. cant wait for the next episode!!
A shiny metallic blue with a pink pearl...remember Bender likes the finer things in life, well what he can steal anyways🤣🤣🤣
It’s gonna be hard to resist a glossy flake paint for the car.
shiny, just to give you more sanding to do 😄
Oh boy!
I know i have no real say in the matter, but I am also torn between the visual cues provided by the show (matte) and the persistent catchphrase (shiny). Is there some happy medium between the two? It's certainly something to try, but I think if in doubt "accurate to the appearance that people recognize visually" (matte grey) is much more important than "accurate to the canon description" ("shiny metal").
I would definitely say Matte Bender head to match the show feel and a glossy car
That’s a popular scheme today! 👍
Metallic-Flake, like they had in the ‘70s and ‘80s for the car’s finish.
That's really tempting!
Well, one of Bender favorite sentence is "Bite my shiny metal @$$". So... ahaha
He claims it’s shiny, but I have my doubts. 😂
I would say, paint it matt to match the cartoon and even add the black outlines for the cell shaded look... wouldn't look right if it was all shiny.... Looking great so far though, can't wait to see the end result
Great insight!
Id say have the car be shiny, as the small shiny Bender in the background is staring us down menacingly
I do love glossy automotive finishes.
@punishedprops and Bender feels like someone who would be shiny, we just don't see it in animation because as a cleanup animator and colourist, drawing shiny lighting on a character who is always in the show would kill us.
Maybe a matte finish for the car, with black lines on the edges to make it look like the animation in the show.
Fun idea!
I have no skin in the Futurama game, but I totally want to see that robot made with actual chrome, as shiny as C-3PO.
There is a car painting trend in Japan that makes paint jobs look like anime/manga. Have a look at that and see if there is a take on this that still gives the cartoon/animation vibe
Apologies. Looks like it’s a global trend, not just limited to Japan.
Oh neat!
I am a hugh fan of mat colors for cartoons. They are printed on paper that isn't shinny. But also when they want to show shinny they put reflection in the picture. I am thinking of a few car shows where they have painted cars in cartoon style. I would check that out and look into it.
PAINTING: I recommend you do it all cell shaded so it looks like he came right out of the animation.
Bender does love to talk about how shiny other parts of his body are, but the simple animation style doesnt really show it lol. I think it could be really fun to have a shiny chrome Bender head! But it might look more accurate to do a two-tone grey or dull metallic finish
Glossy car body for sure and flat metal Bender head
I think a cel shaded finish would look great so it looks like the cartoon in real life
Great idea!
I think the trunk shold be shiny... you know... to stay in character 😉
Well yeah. 😂
All I want to do now is pick it up, pick it up, pick it up...
With regards to the paint job, I'd be tempted with a flat cell shaded look myself.
Got my stuff!!!
Thank you!
Bender would do it in real gold, so definitely shiny
You make a compelling point.
Make it one of them Putty-Looking-Ass Whips!
🤣
Hi there Bill, I would like to know how much it would cost for a hard copy set of your foam smithing books?
Our Foamsmith trilogy is for sale in our website for $90: www.punishedprops.com/shop/foamsmith-trilogy-print-pack/
@punishedprops
Okay, Thank You
I’d say matte for bender, keeps true to the look of the character on the show but satin blue on the car would be cool
Ooh I like it!
i think u shoukd do the car a light gloss and matge for bender
I like it!
I always assumed that Bender was unpolished metal, so only a little shiny
Definitely feel like if benders ass is the same color as his head It's gotta be shiny. Maybe a lighter gunmetal. As for the car, I don't remember you ever doing a candy coat on any props so it'd be interesting seeing you go thru that process on Bender's Car. Whatever you pick I look forward to seeing it!
Definitely leaning towards a glossy automotive finish for the car.
Needs to be cartoon accurate so Matt with black outlines
I like it!
Looks like an issue in the store, I'm getting "ERROR: Invalid API key" when i am trying to buy the blaster pack (i have address in there regardless)
Thank you for letting us know! The issue should be now fixed.
Go with something to contrast Bender. If Bender is shiny then matte and vice versa.
I do like contrast!
Dunno why, but I always thought of Bender as being galvanized steel...
For the lump on the hood, have you seen the way they do old school plaster crown molding? They cut a piece of acrylic to the profile they want, sort of like a trowel, that's shaped like the molding. Oh hot diggity, I love this idea!
What filament do you use for your 3d prints?
For this project I've been trying out PETG. It's easy to print and pretty easy to sand. For props I usually like using ABS, but it's such a pain to print with.
The finish for Bender should correspond with the car: if the car is realistic then Bender should be similar; but perhaps not super glossy as there aren't specular highlights illustrated, so either go down the middle with satin or mimic dusty old metal.

Anyway..bender should be matte or possibly satin, but certainly not glossy or shiny. That would look..off..lol while he DOES refer to his butt as "shiny", he doesn't appear that way.
IMO if you want him to say "Bite my shiny metal..." the paint finish you should choose seems obvious :)
Sure, just how shiny is it? 😂
High gloss with metal flake
Whichever method is used for the car in the end should be the same style used for Bender. Not sure which one would be preferable, but mixing styles feels like a bad idea.
Interesting point!
Bender has to be shiny, it’s in his catch phrase. Bite my Shiny Metal..
He does say that.
Well, it is a SHINY metal trunk. hehe
According to Bender. 😂
I think a matte finish would be best to keep it closest to the artwork of the TV show.
matte car, shiny Bender
Great idea.
Broke: Explaining through high-fidelity Adobe animations 🙄
Woke: Explaining through MS Paint drawings 😮
Bespoke: Explaining through projector drawings 😎
You know it! =D
I think Bender would be satin. I always figured he's aluminium? Which isn't super shiny. Car should be glossy like a good paint job on a car
Thanks!
satin/ brushed effect bender, glossy car
Bender himself should be shiny metalic. The car is a harder choice, it's an old model car in the future so I'd probably say "post apocalyptic matte" but maybe just a slight shiny texture just so it seems more substantial.
Thanks for the insight!
Car shiny. Bender matte
I’m leaning that way.
"Bite my shiny metal ass!" That said, I'd go for not more than satin or semi-gloss.
I'd say that Bender is a dirty older robot so he would not be shiny so not glossy. But I'd go for a semi gloss blue for the car
I'm leaning towards a satin finish for the car and Bender.
I have it on good authority that Bender likes shiny metal.
According to him!
He does say “Bite my shiny metal ass!” Right?
I think bender should be a satin finish but the car should be glossy.
get some nice blue glitter car paint
I think some kind of dull metallic finish for Bender would look great. Bender claims to be shiny but he also doesn't take care of himself very well
No he certainly does not. 😂
I think car should be HIGH gloss and Bender should be satin, in my opinion
That’s a great idea.
mirco plastic everywhere... D:
Shiny car, shiny Bender. Otherwise it'll look like a random plastic toy. Needs to look more realistic
Talk about a surprise sudden flashback to highschool, there, yikes
Someone get the lights!
I think bender should be matte and the car should be glossy
Bender should be metallic but not overly shiny.
The car should be shiny, Bender should be kind of shiny? He is made of metal and asks people to bite his metal ass. But he is also a robot that went through a lot so I guess some of his shiny body is dulled down by now
He claims he’s shiny. 😂
fairwg
Make him chrome
Somehow I think that won't feel like Bender if he's so shiny.
i think you should at least make him silver
Pulled out the over head projector, forgot to get a new marker, just like a teacher
Classic! 😂
