As a kid of the 70s who went to school in England, this goes hand-in-hand with the Banda machine. I don't know what US/Canada called those but they were the mimeograph printers with the blue/purple dye that smelled like methylated spirits (these were before photocopiers were a thing, at least an affordable thing). What's evident now, having found a folder of old school stuff from the 70s my mother had kept, is that documents printed on those Banda machines didn't hold up to time, as most are barely legible now, the ink having faded to almost a yellow trace. Nice nostalgia video Bill - and nice to see someone finding still-practical uses for completely non-gadgetized equipment. Amazing how we managed to be educated without computers, eh? :)
In Turkish, we called them Tepegöz, rough translation is "eye on top", same word for the mythological creature cyclops. This device is both nostalgic and mythical for me :D
“Mr T” It doesn’t make a clever pun with Elmo, but when I think of an Elmo projector I am transported right back in time to the 3rd grade teacher Mr Tchausney, referred to as Mr T by his students (and he loved to say he pitied the fool). Really wonderful man and beloved educator who put his heart and soul into teaching until the end.
There are special wet erase markers you should use. Thats what was most often used. They are a little finer point and a little more saturated. Still available at most office supply stores-used for glass menu signs and stuff like that.
Omg. This is so satisfying. Your overhead projector from the previous video took me back to algebra class in a portable at my junior high school in the 70’s. My teacher was a pro with it and her hands were covered with blue ink from her Vis-a-Vis pen! Also, how awesome it is to be able to make parts with a 3d printer. 👍
I saw those in so many classrooms over the 80s. I had not seen a folding one either. I can also see taking on of these and making it into a scifi prop of some kind. If you find another one somewhere, I'd love to see what cool gadget you could make from it. Willow is a beautiful kitty. That's a good cat daddy who knows that snuggles are important, even when working on something.
When I taught I used one of these all the time. Loved creating my overhead transparencies. Nothing like having the side of your hand marked up with ink after teaching.
Speaking of nostalgia, my dad had that same green roll screen. We used to do shows of his slides from dive trips on them. I miss slides. I can still hear the clunk of the slide projector.
Great to see old tech not being thrown away and forgotten about, and a bonus that it was a simple fix. What about as a name as a double barrel name... Mr Light-on - Light-off. 🤨
The problem I always saw with the old projectors is that they have "hot spots". The stuff in the middle is very clearly lit, but the stuff on the edges is dim and fuzzy. I wonder if you could modify the projector with new lighting technologies to make the image sharp across the entire surface?
A great fix with 3d modeling / printing. It looks like the little ears you omitted might keep the part from rotating with it having just the one screw for attachment. Something like Apollo or Ra(maybe a stargate theme in there also) the sun gods for the brightness or maybe Janus, the Roman God of Efficient Teaching for it's origins. for name ideas.
I remebder a version of overhead projector with a roll of acetate on a spool and a take up spool on the other side. I think they used regular markers so the lessons wouldn't get smudged.
My favorite thing was when my left handed science teacher would write on the overhead projector and smear everything he wrote as soon as he wrote it and then cuss under his breath.
Princess Projecta Mistress of Illusion Princess Projectra (later Sensor Girl) is a fictional character, a superheroine in the DC Comics universe. Typically portrayed as a haughty member of an alien royal family, she is from the 30th and 31st centuries and is a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
I'm sure that the original maker of these projectors never would have thought that one day one of the pieces were going to be remade on a 3d filament printer at somebody home workshop
how about "the light of Zartha", "Lighting McQueen", "Peter Projector". "The Super-Sizer". I love seeing 3D printing being used to keep old things working, everyone needs a 3D printer, or a friend with some CAD skills.
Would those happen to use standard (old style) bulbs? Could you replace them with LED bulbs? Last longer, and certainly cut down on heat. Could maybe even disable the fan at that point.
Funnily enough, I seem to recall all the models at our school as being portable, but none of the teachers knew how to collapse and carry them... except one.
Same with mine. To see them go moving around was shocking, most of the time they'd just carry from the one next door. Looking back on my school perhaps we didn't have money for a projector in every room 😅😂😮😢.
@3dtesseract853 analog PowerPoint? Back in the day this was PowerPoint for me! >_< And even when LCD projectors became a bit more available, one was always told to print your slides to acetate sheets as a backup should you have to revert to the old OHP (or were stuck in a room that only had them) :-(
the 'overhead projcetor' was the tool that was used when i was taught 'how one makes babies'. a happy co-incidence wast that my female teacher at the time was 'WELL HAWT!' such is life
Have you thought about replacing the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs? It should keep that thing from being as hot as the sun and your energy bill from looking like a Michelin Star restaurant receipt.
@@punishedprops If you like the amber glow of incandescence for the nostalgia factor, look to what the Vintaglo company did with their resin incased, faux incandescent, LED Christmas string lights.
Nothing like the classroom lights being turned off with the soft glow of the overhead. The cozy classroom vibes from back in the day were immaculate.
"Projector Gadget" "ElmoVision" Maybe Elmo's "Bright Ideas"?
Projector Gadget is perfect for this!!

Hector the Projector?
Ooh I like it!
After the murderous robot?
I love this, but I would switch it around: Projector Hector. Gives it a little more iambicism.
Prohector?
Proj-Hector :D

vis-a-vis markers? the name just came rushing back to me reading this.
"Aziz"
Because "Aziz, light!"
I like it!

Thanks for showing your process of transferring your dimensions, makes so much sense yet I didn't think of it.
Hi Willow! Thank you for gracing us with your presence

"The Lightbringer" feels epic and well suited.
So we are calling the projector Lucifer lol
When I taught I used one of these all the time. Loved creating my overhead transparencies. Nothing like having the side of your hand marked up with ink after teaching.
Good god, it's all coming back to me. So much time spent staring at the warm glow of the the overhead.
This is amazing!
Amazing. I was thrown back to 5th grade when you powered it up and that fan started blowing...that's a core sound memory unlocked!
Yeah that fan would just drone on all class.
@@punishedprops it may or may not have become a white noise machine for me in class. A dark room, a hushed fan humming away *snooooooze*
Oh man, I love these things. Liquid Light shows with water, dyes, soaps, etc is great.
I need to find some bulbs for mine.
Well since it transforms- Projectatron

1:42 “I bet I have dozens of these… somewhere” 😂 when a hoarder recognizes another hoarder
It's not hoarding if it's all labeled!
I was absolutely delighted by that Myst reference at the end.
Glad you caught it! 😂
Mirage is a good name being that it transforms also👍
Professor projector is a good name
God I feel old!! I remember when these started appearing at school when I was a kid!
Yeah this thing was the top of the line back in the day.
Buzz LIGHTyear for additional nostalgia. Or Optimus Shine since it's also a transformer.
Handy dandy projecting Andy
The protrusions on the back are probably there to keep it from spinning since it is a single screw.
But this is probably good enough.
We’re all about “good enough” around here.
Great to see old tech not being thrown away and forgotten about, and a bonus that it was a simple fix. What about as a name as a double barrel name... Mr Light-on - Light-off. 🤨

Grab some Vis-a-Vis markers while you're back in time. Perfect marking device for transparencies!
I might already have some of those!

Illuminous Prime (a transformer...)
It's name is already Elmo.
So many memories! Also he could be called Projectron 2000
The illuminator: lighter of secrets... and animated jaggady teeth monsters
My favorite thing was when my left handed science teacher would write on the overhead projector and smear everything he wrote as soon as he wrote it and then cuss under his breath.
The wet erase markers are best for these because your hand doesn't erase them as easily.
Good thinking.
Yes! Bill knows his people and how to make them happy. This is incredibly amazing and I love every minute of this!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
that thumbnail is so hilarious!
Ahh the fond memories of naming stuff in the twitch streams back in the day
I never seen a portable one, but that last video was giving me Biology PTSD.

It has to be Named Spectre the Projector :0)

It’s one of my favorites. 😄
🎵 Doo Dodoo Dodoo, Projector Gadget 🎵
Call it "the back row nap enabler" Dim light, white noise, everything a body needs.
Yay! Side quest time!!
Side quests are my favorite.
Based on your “we have the technology” statement, you should call the projector Steve Austin.
Here in Germany, we still use these things in schools to this day.. 🙃
You know a good thing when you see it!
is there a LED replacemant? would be a cool experiment! & cheers for the video! Name: Mrs. Brightlight!
Would those happen to use standard (old style) bulbs? Could you replace them with LED bulbs? Last longer, and certainly cut down on heat. Could maybe even disable the fan at that point.
Oh yeah probably! I'll probably wait to do that until the current bulbs burn out.
3D printing is cool, but I'm surprised you didn't simply mold and cast the intact part?
Thank you for the Myst prison book ending. 😛
10:13 "big projects that we need to blow up" Have you been spending time with Adam Savage of late?
Yes, but that isn't related. HA!
I would call it “Mr Beams” 😊

hmmm, names are hard for me. How about Opie (as in O.P. as in Overhead Projector)? maybe Lite Brite or Rainbow Bright?
Great ideas!
The Light bringer
I have had a box of over head projector transparencies for over a decade.
My plan was to paint up some animation cels with it, but the ink smears off.
Ah bummer!
"Over his head" comes to mind, or "Over His Headder", something like that
Nice!
I'm pretty sure my old elementary school still had those well into 2010 😅
Because of your love of fallout the projector has to be a projectron
Victor Illuminus reflecto projecto
The Flashbanger

So much nostalgiaaaa
I was once stuck in 1994 for an entire year.
If I was back in 1994, I would not be asking to be saved 🤣 dear god take me back!
Those were magical times!
I suggest Pro-Jec-Tor. Pronounced like the name of a transforming robot.
Q: What do you have in your bag? because you have to hold it up so high?
a: an overhead projector
Da Lux
Because it's damn fancy and it makes light
i propose "Bulba Fett"
Sticking with the Futurama theme, how about “Lee Light” in honor of Leela.
Projectotron, fold out! Keekakerker!
And it doesn't get so warm that the 3d printed piece is melting again?
Rorschach Self-Projection
not just the 80s and 90s! my schools didn't transition from these bad boys to smart boards until like 2010, so even 2000's kids get the nostalgia :3
Oh wow!
OHP Lovecraft.
Ooh I like that!
“Let there be Light!”
My suggestion for the name would be: IlluminaMe
Bad pun on the illuminati and Illuminate me, but I really like it 😅
I dig it!
"Projector Gadget" or "Write Bright" if you wanna go with the 80s/90s puns (I may have gotten a little help from chat gpt hehe) :)
"PowerPoint Ranger" :D
