I think people are taking a step too far with the "sexual tension" between Silco and Jinx. Those two are dysfunctional people, they have their own obsessions and problems, Silco is a broken man that was betrayed by a person he considered a brother when they fought for their city, Powder is a broken girl that since childhood her whole world was stomped to smithereens, she lost her parents at a basic formative moment of her life and contrary what people think her "lack" of reaction isn't strange it is simply because her young mind couldn't properly process it.
They DON"T have any "sexual" thing going on, they simply lack part of the building block that make the nuances that people develop when in a family relationship, Silco truly thinks of her as his daughter, he sees her potential and what she is capable of, but in his obsession, he sees a soldier in her too someone that will walk by his side in his quest for "justice". And I disagree with the point that he is relegated to just a simple villain, all his arc is still there but he is still a man on a path of vengeance that he doesn't truly know the consequences of.
Powder is someone that deeply needs affection, just because we didn't "see" her love for Claggor and Mylo doesn't mean there wasn't any, she knows they are dead because of her mistake and that Vi "abandoned" because of that, so she carries that burden with her and it slowly corrodes her mind and this makes a need for affection that Silco provides, their closeness is simply their dynamic, I HIGHLY doubt Silco touch Powder in any manner besides as a daughter.
Let me be perfectly clear... their relationship still not healthy, because they both aren't healthy, but they are just a father and daughter, no more no less. In this second act I saw that maybe, there was a point where that for Powder's sake Silco would leave behind his thirst for revenge, and maybe... just maybe Powder could have not turned into Jinx, but we know how this song and dance will go... certain falls simply aren't recoverable.

      Great point pal.
Also, wanna add to above that Silco's path isn't simply path of venegance. I can remember him saying that this is for the people of Zaun. So that the rich Piltovans would be less richer. Their whole arc with Vander was whether to give fight to Pilts or not. And while Vander was feared by the consequences of the previous attempt, Silco was more radical in that way. Act II he is just harnessing power so that he can make another attempt to overthrow Pilts.

We can see the reason why Jinx leans close to Silco like that in the scene is because she's going to help him inject his eye with the shimmer syringe.
Then, at the lake, they get uncomfortably close again, which is only followed in Silco immersing Jinx under the water.
They behave weirdly because they both are dysfunctional people. It's an unhealthy and delusional relationship, so its eeriness is intentional. There hasn't been any actual sexual indication between them, so yeah, I think people are imagining and assuming things out of the unsettling tone too quickly.

Jinx being really touchy with Silco actually has a point. Notice, Jinx keeps seeing things that aren’t there, hallucinating people when that person isn’t there. She has no idea what is real and what is fake, which was shown with that Firelight girl from ep 4. Now Silco is the only person she trusts and treats like a family in the second act, and all of her touching him and being close is like to affirm herself ghat he’s that, that he’s real. Pretty sad to be honest.

    • @Agumame
      @Agumame 2 года назад +15

Adding onto that: Silco is a villain and their relationship is clearly, unequivocally intended AND shown to be bad and unhealthy and is supposed to be uncomfortable. Vi is one of our main protagonists and her whole thing is how Silco is bad and is a terrible influence thats ruining Powder's life. Now if someone wants to argue whether something like the relationship between Silco and Jinx should be included in something thats PG13, thats a different debate and I totally get it. But the show also has rampant murder, drug abuse, a sex scene, and just in general is on the much darker side of things so its not like this relationship with Jinx and Silco that makes you uncomfortable comes out of nowhere in a show that is otherwise about people who live happy and healthy lives. Its a bad relationship, involving a bad man where his bad influence on this girl is one of his main crimes and conflicts with our protagonist, in a dark show.

I don’t think they necessarily have to explain the cause of why there’s a rift between Piltover and Zaun. From the average viewer it’s a classic rich and poor classist situation, the story doesn’t warrant the cause of the division since it’s the effects of the division that are relevant to the characters right now.

I agree, and despite that characters frequently give clues and hints about what happened. Except that the story does explain the reason. Heimerdinger originally built Piltover as a place to get away from the Arcane and Mages. He instated a council to help rule it. With all great intentions, I'm sure, but with his lack of an eye to reality and the struggles of mortals, the council eventually became corrupt. So, they did what any power-hungry, classist snobby group would do, exploit the people who were born into a lower class for their own financial gain. Whether that be mining in the fissures or crafting the finest wines to then export to the other continents. Over time that conflict got worse and worse until Vander and Silco decided to lead an uprising against Piltover, which failed. And we are brought to the opening scene of Arcane. See, simple.
Is any of that outright explained in the series? No. But that's what makes it great! You can capture all of the information from how the characters act with themselves and interact with each other on screen. You can infer all that detail with what is given between the lines of the dialogue and conversations between the characters. Even the cinemotography, color theory, and background matte painting used all paint that story for the audience to capture, reflect upon, and mull-over to build their own informed opinion of the "story behind the story". Absolute brilliant story-telling in my opinion.

Not much to understand about Piltover v Zaun but classism and simple economics. It really isn't necessary to explain, and honestly your examples of A New Hope or Fear Street don't do a much better job of it. Pretty easy to present the underground as a counterculture, and people at the top like Jayce have made it very clear that they want to use their work to help Zaun rather than further alienate it.

We don’t need them to tell us that they have to steal just to get by, we are introduced to that fact by simply watching them and the fact they DO STEAL to get by. We don’t need them to tell us the topsiders look down on them when we see the attitude the enforcers treat them with, and how the rich barely even talk about them. The visual cues of the city of gold and creams and the dingy dark colours of the Undercity already establish to the viewer. There’s just no need for words when you can see it so clearly.

To which I say that every Star War movie has a text crawl that puts the events of the movie into context
Now, you are right, we can see that the enviorwment in The Lanes is toxic, that they live in poverty, that Piltover live in wealth and have a low and poor image of people from the Lanes. We even see a violent conflict between both populations
What we don't see as an audience is the why both population centers live in the conditions they live in and why they relationship is one of agresivity and disdain?
How come that one city is living full of wealth and the other is surviving in poverty and contamination? Why do they hate each other?
League of Legends players will know why if they have read the lore of Runeterra and can figure out the context and history of The Lanes and Piltover by projecting the knowdelege from the game into the series, even if it's not a 1:1 translation from game to animated series.
But new audiences will be lost about the origin of the situation they see the cities and characters in.
If Star Wars can use 83 characters to stablish a princess fleeing an empire to help the rebels in their war against said empire, Arcane could have used a similar count to tell the audience how one city came to be prosperous by polluting and empoverishing the neighbour city.
That would put the series in the context needed for audiens to better understand the the injustice that Piltover imposed on The Lanes and the conflict this generated between their habitants

But it's clear that her parents death messed with her head because even in act 1 we see that Jinx has a fear of abandonment that resulted in mental disorder (punching your own head when in distress is a clear sign)
It's also that deep rooted fear that pushed Jinx to immediately latch on to Silco because he was there when she was most vulnerable.

I'm choosing to see Arcane for what it seems clearly intended to be: an easy entry point to the world of Runeterra that gradually invites the viewer further in through its characters and their stories, even it doesn't give them all as much time as we wish it did. The production from a visual and audio standpoint continues to be top of the industry, and I think Studio Fortiche has somehow nailed the perfect balance so far with keeping the story detail-rich for existing fans, while also making the overall plot easy enough to follow for a general audience. Let's at least all be happy that everyone involved managed to pull off a project like this to the extent that they already have! Regardless of how the third act lands, Arcane has easily set the bar for shows based on video games, and has already succeeded in introducing the best part of LoL and Runeterra to vast swaths of people that never would've known about it otherwise.
I've been watching this show with my partner, who has zero familiarity with LoL and Runeterra, and she's been able to follow the plot and characters pretty much without issue, even enjoying the show so much that she insists on watching the new episodes together! As someone who hasn't followed the lore that closely until recent years, I think it's a little silly how hung up you're getting on retcons and the potential significance of easter eggs. This is far from the first time Riot has updated their lore, the hesitation with a declaration of canon vs. non-canon is likely to appease lore fanatics since most others (myself included) really don't give a shit about total accuracy.

I think JInx not feeling any remorse towards killing innocent people shows just how far gone she is. Her immense guilt for accidently killing her friends has been twisted and turned by Silco to fashion her into this complete agent of chaos. I mean look at her character in league lore. She was never the good guy or anti-hero (at least not in anything I can remember). She is always the Joker to Caitlin and Vi's Batman. A completely disturbed person wrecking havoc in a torn and crooked enviroment. The only time we see her entertain the idea of leaving what shes becoming is when she learns that Vi isnt dead. She raises the torch-thing in the hopes of bringing back what she had before. But then Ekko (at least I hope he is) comes and fucks that up.
As far as her not thinking about Vander, i think youre right. It does seem odd that she doesnt remember him the same way she does her friends. I think that it lends to idea that vander is still around in some form or another.

There's a big difference between character development and character progression.
Character development is how much a character is fleshed out while progression refers to their starting point and their end point.
Character progression is not a mandatory part of storytelling. Cowboy bebop is regarded as one of the best animated shows ever yet none of its main characters really show any clear signs of progression. That entire show is pure character development and it works great.

"She kills several innocent people, so it doesn't matter what your character arc is" (17:00 ish for full context, I'm absolutely paraphrasing)
Gonna strongly (and respectfully) disagree. Act 1 already showed that she wants to fight back against Piltover -- even Mylo is surprised and comments on her zeal. Even Vander was having trouble keeping the Underground under control near the end. And after Act 2, we're dealing with a Jinx that's been raised half her life by Silco, a guy who's more than likely filled her head with even more Piltover prejudice. A guy who wants Zaun to be born as a true nation.
She _was_ killing "bad guys," as far as she's likely concerned. If you asked her, how many enforcers do you think she'd say are "innocent?" Or anyone living in the underground, for that matter?
That said, "as far as she's concerned" is likely not very far at all. She is, after all, the Loose Cannon. She was gonna throw a bomb full of nails at the Enforcers in Act 1. The first two verses of Get Jinxed fully convey her energy. She calls herself Jinx, now, forsaking her name -- she's fully committed to the fact that disaster happens around her, and is reveling in it.
To say "it doesn't matter what your story arc is" because they don't regret their actions is... A bit myopic, in my opinion? That doesn't "just make her a bad person." She's a traumatized sociopath who's being used as a tool, and the powder keg of what she's going to do when she figures it out is already lit. That is seriously interesting, to me.

You're confusing "justifiable character actions" with "morally justifiable actions." I'm talking about the former, not the latter. At no point did I say what she was doing was "good."
But it was, as far as a character like Jinx is concerned, understandable.
And to dismiss the character's actions as "just a bad person" because they're morally questionable and/or reprehensible, and remorseless? That is, in my opinion, ignoring several facets of the character.

Also, Jinx exhibited possible signs of Schizophrenia. The hallucinations, voices in her head, the haunting guises of people she knows hint to her having schiz. I'm genuinely baffled at how poorly you've analyzed the show on some points. You did make some great point on the pacing, some characters (enphasis on some, gosh damn you do have some really bad takes sry ...). But at the same time you talk about stuff you dont seem to understand yourself.
About the character devellopment of Milo and Claggor, you think you are criticizing the lack of DEVELOPMENT but what you are criticizing is the lack of character PROGRESSION. Yes they have no character progression in act 1, but they are (and we are talking about secondary characters i remind you) developed. If you understand their personality, their relationships with other characters then that means they had development. Yes they are not very fletched out, and that's a good thing to point out. But stop mistaking development for progression pls.
Now about the relationship between Piltover and Zaun. I believe you may not have seen the same show as me, because its pretty clear why each parti feels the way they do.
Zaun hates piltover because of repression, NOT simply because they are rich. Cops can do anything they want in zaun (to some extend as we saw with vander's agreement), They feel like Piltover does nothing to help them (which is true).
On the other side, we have Piltover. THey dont hate them because they are poor ?? They are discusted by poverty. Its a classical dystopian trope. They hate filth, they hate the toxicity, they hate the crime. Which explains why enforcers are so aggressive down there. But guess what ? All of these are caused by Piltover. They put all the toxic manufacturing industries in Zaun (we see that in every landscape shot of both cities), they created an environment that encouraged crime. The counsel talks about their struggle to control the undercity, their policies have lead them this far.
I understood all that just by watching the show. The show makes a very explicit job at showing why things are the way they are when it comes to the politics... I really think knowing about the lore has made you a bit too closed off regarding anything the show tries to show us. Sry about that ranting but goddamn you've said some really dumb stuff. Did we not watch the same scene with Woodkid playing in the background where Silco shows his rage? How he borderline killed one of his own crew, how he stumbles back when he kicks because he's so physically weak, and how he screams and ruffles his hair. Silco become **more** of a character imo

Silco had no problem killing THE SHERIFF and using shimmer to wage war in act 1. In act 2, he smuggles shimmer to corrupt piltover from the inside. He also works with the sheriff and gets mad if an enforcer dies for no reason

Great video! About Caitlyn, I can agree with a lot of what you said. I find a small amount of appeal in her character with her “fish out of water” dynamic with zaun. The privileged booksmart rich kid going to learn about the streets. It’s kinda compelling to me.

My impression was that Jinx had about as much empathy for enforcers/topsiders as the star wars crew had for anyone on the death star or clad in storm trooper armor.
In her mind she's killed two people on accident and a lot of nazis on purpose.

oooo discourse over stuff said in the video. I agree with you matt. I will say they probably meant to imply a lot of how jinx became a murderer by the time skip of being raised by silco but they couldve did a montage of the two sisters going through where they were like jinx living under the chem lords and vi getting angry in prison and so on.

I think the inclusion of Stanwick Pedidly was supposed to be an Easter Egg for those who read the lore, because I think what they're doing is rewriting some of Piltover's history to make it more interesting and champion-focused instead of a bunch of no-names making groundbreaking inventions. I think Stanwick is gonna get retconned from being Jayce and Viktor's mentor and his inclusion in the show is just a reminder of what once was there. It'd be super interesting if Stanwick was also Singed because Singed was a Piltovan professor in the lore and he hasn't shown any signs of being such in Arcane.

i do agree that it would be nice to see jinx charater more fleshed out, i hope they do that in act 3, but i feel like the reason that she's like this is because if silcos influence on her, if you spend upwards of 5+ years with someone saying that they hate the person that cared for you, and that they weren't that person that you thought they were, that would probably mess up their view on that person .

I'm surprised about a few things Matt.
First off all, I'm surprised about your point about Milo and Clagger and how their lack of character development/backstory weakens their tie to Jinx and Vi. While they're clearly just a plot device, they exist to comolement the early dynamic between Vi and Jinx, bring a bit if conflict and most importantly show how the two girls have found a new family with Vander and the two kids. They have a sibling-like/close friendship thing going on, so I don't see the need for them to have any particular extra story (though I'd like it if Milo was a bit more than just the group's asshole, but oh well) for me to understand why Jinx and Vi are so distraught at their death. I agree with your point on Vander tho and even raise. Even if he's still alive, 99% sure that Jinx doesn't know that, so him not being shown like the other two is still weird.
I'm actually surprised you disliked the relationship between Jinx and Silco (and get your head out of the gutter dude), to me it seemed more like this weird, dysfunctional parent-child relationship, where Silco sees himself in Jinx and actually cares for her, but is on the other scared of her and what she will do if unchecked. In the same vein, I don't think Jinx is supposed to be pitied. She's a tragic character, not necessarily a sympathetic one and the show seems aware of that. They are aiming for audience pity at her situation, not for sympathy at her actions (at least imo)
Lastly, thanks for bringing up the Sun Gates, I really had not noticed how the show had completely ignored the reason behind the divide (and I fear it won't be brought up).
Lastly, I just found it really cool how Silco and Marcus kinda slipped into the same roles as Vander and Grayson, just more aggressive and less trusting of each other. It really underlined how their hateful, idealistic rhetoric of "just crush em all, easy solution" really doesn't work in the real world and how they needed to compromise with their perceived enemy just to stay afloat. It's a nice bit of commentary in a world so hellbent on seeing the other side as the enemy that needs to be destroyed, rather than someone we need to collaborate with even if we don't agree.
Anyways, still a great video as usual Matt, glad to see you uploading again

I'm really hoping Arcane becomes more of an anthology series: easter eggs and tie-ins with the events of the previous seasons, but each one being a pretty isolated exploration of a different group of characters (Ionians dealing with the Noxian invasion, The Ninja School team's history with Zed, Ezreal and Lux roadtrip to a ruined dungeon, etc. etc.)

My first exposure to League's lore is the story between Viktor and Jayce. It amazed me when I found out that Viktor, the guy that looks like a super villain in game, was in fact not evil at all. My man just wanted to improve the human body with machinery seeing how workers suffered.
Then in Arcane, they take that base story, and add so much more. Viktor saves Jayce's life. They seem to be friends but you can sense something off by the foreshadowing (Jayce putting it cup over Viktor, Viktor staying backstage while Jayce getting the glory & Viktor going from an assistant of Heimerdinger to of Jayce). It's so exciting knowing that eventually, they will fall back into their ingame selves, but the journey there is so much different and flavourful now to the original lore.

  • @eternal7912
    @eternal7912 2 года назад +2

Yeah, I definitely hope they get their shit together with the lore and mold everything else around Arcane.
Also I really don't understand why people are getting sexual vibes from Jinx and Silco. It never even crossed my mind until someone else brought it up. Yeah she got up close, sort of on his lap, and touched him, but she was also trying to inject his eye. She may have boundary issues, but honestly don't really see anything wrong there.

Now this is quality content when it comes to reviews or going through the story. He explains everything so clearly and it's all very easy to follow and understand. Maybe it's because the pauses aren't edited out which kinda syncs our thoughts with his as he's talking, idk. I find myself agreeing with most of what he said. There are some references about the crystals actually being Brackern crystals and not the synthetic onse in the "into the Arcane" tab in League client. This doesn't matter tho cause I do think the show should reference everything important and be a stand-alone.
One thing I personally really love is how AMAZINGLY they animate Jinx. Her mannerisms and moments all have this crazy energy/vibe and I cannot imagine how much effort that musta been.
    Gj riot games. Gj Matt.

the reason for jinx's obssession with mylo and claggors death doesnt necessarily have to be because she cared about them (although i assume she did in some sense because she always wanted to help them), but its because its the reason she assumes Vi left her. Vi's protection and approval are ALL she cared about. so in some sense their deaths led jinx to her loneliness. hence why shes so fixated on their deaths. because if she never killed them then its easy for her to assume that vi wouldnt have left her.

16:56 his opinion about Jinx is pretty spot on. Her backstory doesn't excuse her actions like murder and terrorism. But I feel thats the point, she is a villain, she doesn't have a redemtion arch. And I LOVE that. I hate it when they make a psychopatic killer but then go "oh but they had a sad childhood etc etc". They're giving a backstory to Jinx that explain why she does what she does, but doesn't(nor try) to excuse it. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion so is okay if some people doesn't like that.

Have to say that "amount of ignorance brought by Caitlyn" is likely intentional. Caitlyn was raised under the hawk eye of her nobility parents and lived in a very sterile environment. She has never had do anything like this. Even her interactions with non-nobility would be with Piltover residents, who are still living very good lives. She has not had to face any horrors until she started working with the enforcers. Even when she started working with the enforcers, her parents made sure she only got safe jobs. Her parents got her fired after she was on a dangerous assignment so she could take a ceremonial desk job. Her parents wanted her in a structured and sterile environment. She has never known the likes of Zaun and the trouble its people face. If she is acting dim it's only because all of this is completely new to her. She probably has never even had to consider the idea of growing up without parents. She's doing her best when transitioning from a silver spoon to underground alley street food.
