Trivia: She recorded the verses and the chorus in just a single take! She wanted to re-record some things beacause she's a perfectionist but Linda Perry (the composer) said they would use her 1st take and the song is about beauty in imperfections. The 1st line "dont look at me" was her saying to her friend who was in the studio while recording to not look at her because she felt shy.

This video was censored in the day time only allowed to be showed fully after 9pm in the uk… they were not allowed to show the gays kissing at all and some of the other scenes were part edited out… growing up as a queer kid in that time I felt like I wasn’t allowed to be shown.. but was so thankful she kept the original edit and had the bravery to come out with this in the first place. it saved lives!!

The song was released in late 2002. It was initially written by Linda Perry and was to be given for Pink to perform, but after a meeting she had with Christina at her house, she ended up giving it to her to sing. I think it was a good decision, I love Pink too but Christina did it masterfully.
She wrote it for herself. She wanted to release it herself. She played it for Christina to hear and she wanted to sing it and Linda thought about it and reluctantly agreed. When they were recording, there was a friend of Linda’s in the studio watching Christina so Christina said “Don’t look at me” that’s when Linda knew that Christina has insecurities too and knew this is her song to sing.
Pink got angry when she found out that Linda let Christina take it. That’s why she fell out with Linda. She stopped working with her but included the 3 songs they worked on for her album Try This and worked with other people for the rest. She also recorded a very explicit diss song called Hooker about Linda and had it as a hidden song at the end of the album.
Then on tour while singing Lady Marmalade had blow up dolls as her, Christina, Mya, & Lil Kim and she was humping the Christina doll. Then she sang a little but of beautiful and said to the Christina doll “you’re ugly”.

It wasn't written for Pink. Linda wrote it for herself, and Pink heard it and asked for it but Linda wasn't ready to give it up. In fact she wasn't ready to give it to Christina either, but she changed her mind after hearing Christina's take on the demo.

I was deployed to the middle east in the Navy when this song came out, so I did not get to experience the backlash from the video, but I do remember hearing the song in Bahrain at a bar and the radio was playing it. As usual this was an entertaining video. You guys are charming.

This song was written for P!nk by Linda Perry, she even recorded her demo. Linda was having conversations with Christina and they recorded the song without P!nk’s knowledge. P!nk says today it is more Christina’s song than it could’ve ever been hers, BUT It ended the relationship between Linda and P!nk. P!nk had found Linda who had previously been an artist and begged her to re-enter the industry, she then co-wrote two albums with her. I truly believe had she just told P!nk that the song was going somewhere else we would have so much more amazing music- but she shot herself in the foot.

I feel like I remember people being way more scandalized by Dirrty than this video. Most people are way more accepting than we give them credit for. Twenty years ago seems like a long time, but times weren't that different. There were gay men on TV - Will and Grace for example. I remember there being a pretty positive response to this video.
