Between her debut and her second album she began to to take control of the management that represented her. Encouraged by some of the songwriters from her first album, she began writing in journals and diaries... fighter started off as a poem of what she was feeling at the time and evolved into the song. Fighter is about her former Manager, and also loosely aimed towards her dad, and Dallas Austin. Basically the men in her life at the time that recently had hurt her.

This song wasn't about an ex. It was about her former manager who stole from her and exploited her, and she ended up firing him and taking the reins of her own career, which resulted in her album Stripped which is a masterpiece. So this song is like her telling him that she didn't need him, he took advantage of her and betrayed her, but she's stronger, she will fight her way up and she'll transform into a more powerful creature. Awesome empowerment anthem.
Exploited who? #1 album, 3 #1 singles, BNA grammy, successful tour all for an unknown brand new artist. Xtina has never match let alone surpassed the success of her debut album. lets not

The fact that she went on to have critically acclaimed albums and more Grammys with albums she produced herself is proof that she didn't need to be put through those situations so early in her career.

This is a great song to listen to before you have to go do something where you need a bit of badass energy. Stripped is such a good album actually. It still stands up as a fantastic listen 20 years later.

Oh my gosh brings back memories, I remember I sounded so good singing the bridge onwards from 🎶how could the man I thought I knew turned out 2b…..🎶 with the adlibs , vamp. As a boy too, very impressive vocals similar to Christina but then puberty soon hits and my voice deepened…couldn’t do the runs at the end anymore 😂

The song was about her first manager that overworked her and then stole a bunch of money from her before she fired him and ended his career. Some people think it is also about her dad but she has a MUCH more personal and brutal song about her dad on that album.
I remember when I 1st heard & saw this vid, I was obsessed, even stayed up late that dayto keep watching it and requesting on a music channel called the box, here in London/ uk. My mums boyfriend would come downstairs couple times to turn it down

I just can guess but I'm pretty sure she's singing about her relationship to her father. And if this is not the case, if I'm wrong, it can only be about the people that formed her in this sort of pop princess, which made her feel totally uncomfortable in any way. But I still love that song. It's a timeless masterpiece.

It's annoying when "men" think that when a woman decides to tap in her darker side, cuts her hair short, have piercings, you automatically think that it is all because of a lover. Women are not only just that. The song and the video is about the hurt and pain people made her experience since childhood, from an abusive father (perhaps), peers who bullied her because of her talent, media and predatory people and people who just used her and took advantage of her career-wise.
