Great job!! You remind me so much of my husband! He spends all of his spare time fixing mowers, boat motor and recently an old mini bike and a 4- wheeler for the grandkids and great grandkids to play on.
I'm going to assume you've done this before or at least something similar! I am amazed at how you just took that beat up, worn out part and gave it life again! My husband died in October and he was too weak to work on our riding mower before he died. He kept say he had to do it and I kept saying just show me how and I'll do the work. Just didn't happen. Now he's gone and I'm reading the book that came with it and wondering what the heck they are saying. Soooooo, I have repair envy going on at this point and am in awe with the many talents you have. Don't know your age, but as you get older you will be able to do EVERYTHING! God bless you and the family. I watch every video so keep them coming!

Right on Sam. Took me back (a few short years) . I can't begin to tell y'all how it warms my heart to see young folk doing the same things we did. I know how tough those starter gennys are and I knew it was going to work as long as the windings were good. We hooked one up to an old vehicle fan and made a wind powered generator outta one. Old isn't useless...at least in machinery. God bless I enjoyed rooting y'all on.

Great. 1964 was a very good year!
It's not so much that the starter is tough rather than it's just basically a simple device. It's a field coil and a rotating armature, and that's more or less it. Cleaning it, even a basic cleaning such as you gave I was enough to get all the grit and sand (and water that was shorting it out), out of it, and it works.

I have to say you are one quiet man ,If they were my kids they would NEVER touch any machinery that wasn't theirs EVER again .i amazed you got it going i hope there no sand in the sump.keep safe.
I had a good fussing session at them off camera, trust me. They got the point. ;) It's also just payback to me from when I was a kid... I did terrible things to my dad's tools and stuff I'm sure. Thankfully they didn't mess with the oil dipstick. I checked it before cranking and it was untouched and looked as it should.

Man this brings back bad memories Lol . I recall me and my brother thought it would be a great joke on dad to put rocks in his mowers gas tank. Unfortunately dad agreed and laughed the whole time he was whipping our tails. LOL We found less humorous pranks after that LOL

Yes, we were thrilled! Elijah for sure learned the lesson and will abide by the rules. Isaac on the other hand... he's a firecracker and we don't have hope yet. LOL We can only trust one taddles on the other quickly. LOL

about installing the brushes it might work if you cut the top and bottom of a can cut it down the liddle to make a roll and slip that over the ancor after installing the brushes to keep them in place with sliding the rotor in , once in pull the piece of can out from between the brushes and ancor , might make instaling a little eazier
it might help to seal up the starter generator some with liquid gasket around the front and back seam and around the posts before assembling it
A 5 dollar tarp would save you lots of money.

Good video. I save tractors on utube sells rebuild kits. He tests them by touching starter lug with 12 volt power and then while it is spinning touches the field lug and it should slow down.

Love that you are so able to fix anything but fyi please do these oily projects in a five gallon bucket. Hate to think youre fouling your water table with runoff from gasoline and brake fluid.

You're right! The rear most pin was broken and only just biting a tiny bit. Later (in other videos I've put up with the tractor) I found out the teaser spring on the clutch is broken. New parts are here, just need to find the time to tear it apart and redo. Been limping along in the meantime to get the work done to see me through.
That was good. My concern is the boys. I hope you have talked to them about how important it is to leave things like that alone, not a toy. But maybe in your household kids are allowed to do their own thing, just concerned, my boys would have been told the danger. Thanks for another good video.
Maybe if he tells them they have to work off the damage they caused or that any $ they get will be going to buy new parts n his wage to fix it they will see things a dif. way..and a butt whoopin too think they will leave it alone then maybe.
You should use electric parts cleaner inside the case. You dont want to break down the varnish on the field coil wires. Probably thousands of feet of thin wire wound around the core that has to keep from shorting out by relying on the thin varnish coating. that brake cleaner might deteriorate the varnish.
What did the driveline problem turn out to be? We are anxious for the sequel!

I also tried to fix my starter for the lawn mower.. everything looked fine inside. but, it wouldn't work.. I've read they "just go bad"... lol!! lucky for me, a new one was only 23.00... :)

Yay!! I knew it would start! The hubs rewound the armature and replaced the brushes on my old front-loading washer, installed it and away she went! Say, you don't think something got inverted when the clutch was reinstalled, do ya? I don't know, I can tell ya how much gas we'll need in the car to drive for a week but I know nothing about clutches. Zero. I'm gonna ask my daughter to watch the clutch video she could tell us. I enjoyed watching this video too. LIfe on the homestead...it's one thing after another.

Thanks 👍 And that's the question of the day! There are some small holes from the factory in it, but I wonder if they had help via two boys and a watering can... Either way, I'm blocking up the holes after it runs a bit to heat up and evaporate any moisture out of it.
When you were cleaning that with the wire brush I thought, it's going to work, then when it did, I was like, yeah! My question is, what were the boys instructions as to how they treat your farm machines in the future?
I know I'm late replying to this video but I knew the Starter Generator was going to work! I do have a question though, was the clutch linkage out of adjustment? The next video is you plowing the garden and I never found out what the deal was with it. I enjoy the videos and I guess it's because I can relate. I am a tinkerer and can fix just about anything. I'm not getting any younger so that does limit me. I enjoy making things out of pallet wood but have always been intrigued with a lot of the wood turning videos. Thanks for the entertainment! Teach those boys all you can, it's becoming a lost art.
The issue is a broken teaser spring on the clutch assembly. I was able to adjust it to get more life out of it and limp along, but it really needs to be pulled apart and re-built. Maybe this winter? I have the parts, just need the time now. LOL :)
Man that's the reason why I wouldn't start your ground wire was hooked to that you had no on that ear that was broke off ground to it but you ground somewhere else and it'll work assuming it ain't rusted solid now

Nice job! Are those breather holes in the starter cover or should they be sealed up with silicone to prevent future water damage? Good luck with the rest of the repair.
TheSaks40 breather holes if you do Thisbe those it will get really hot and could potentially explode the problem is this tractor is open to wheather elements and it should be kept in a nice dry storage area

What size belt is that go from the starter to the crank shaft
If I remember right, it should cross to a 3/8 x 31.
