My mom and my mom in law both made Poor Man's Bread. Flour, sugar, shortening, yeast w/ warm water, salt. Nothing else. It was deliciously! I still make it yet today at 81. Everybody loves it! That's all the bread besides biscuits or cornbread that we had growing up.

Your recipe sounds alot like my moms, she made 10 loaves a week. She would make small batches for rolls as needed or cinnamon rolls. There was 8 of us kids, however 2 of those siblings came after I was married with babies of my own, lol. She taught me to make bread when I was 9, I love making it. There is nothing that smells more like the safety and comfort of home than the aroma of baking bread.

I just love watching your videos. You can also put some of your dough into a plastic container that is 4 times bigger than your your dough and put it in your refrigerator with a cover on it. It slow rises in the fridge and will keep well for about 4 or 5 days. You can pinch off some dough to make pizza. It gives a different taste and texture like a pizzeria. I used to do this when my kids were small. You just take it out and let it rest for an hour before you roll it out. I will keep watching for your great tips. 😊

My Grandma baked a large batch of bread in a huge mixing bowl, every week. She would give me a small piece of dough to knead and put in a small tart pan to bake. She did the same with my children. Such wonderful memories... No guest ever left her house without a loaf of bread to take with them. Watching you make bread brings back those memories. Thank you.

I used to make 5 lbs of bread at a time when I was 13 years old. Mom and Dad would ask me if I wanted to stay home from school and bake bread and I always said, 'ok'. I was a straight A student and made the honor roll every time so it was ok for me to miss every once in a while. I treasure those days when my parents were alive. I used a whole 5 lbs of flour, cake yeast, lard, sugar and water. Dad always made bean soup on that day. I didn't like bean soup as a teen so I just ate my bread along with the rest of my siblings. This video was a joy to watch. Blessings to everyone.

I really love your channel. I wasn't taught to cook or bake from my mother bc she was abusive and an alcoholic! There were 3 of us kids, me being the youngest (I'm 63 now). My mother was only abusive to me. When I got older she told me that she treated me the way she does bc I was better at school and prettier than my sister! My brother was 7 years older than myself and was always spending his time at friends houses to avoid the rather of our mother and as soon as he graduated from high school he enlisted into the Navy. I knew then that it would only get worse for me, so that is why she never taught me how to cook. She did have me doing housework as soon as I was old enough. I became a perfectionist bc if I didn't do things the way she wanted it then she would make me do it all over again. One of my aunts took me under her wing and tried to teach me what I needed to know. That came to an end as soon as my mother noticed her giving me attention. I'm just trying to give you an idea of why, at the age of 63, that I'm not an accomplished cook. I have forgiven her though. She has been gone since 2003. My whole family is gone now. I'm the only one left other than my son. I'm who I am bc of all my experiences and how I was raised. I had to rise above all of it and raise my children the way I always wanted to be raised, with a mother that loves unconditionally and is supportive no matter what they do. They had discipline but only the right way! Now they are productive members in their community and both have professional jobs. My son is in the oil business and a volunteer Firefighter and my daughter is a gemologist with a famous jewelry company. We are very proud of them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of cooking and baking with everyone. You have touched my life and I thank you for helping me learn how to finally cook! God bless you and I will keep you and Mr. Brown in my prayers! Blessings, Scooter of Cedar Canyon Farm, Orlando, Oklahoma.❤🛵🏡🚜😉🥰

My Mom would make bread every month, we were a family of 7. She made lots of loaves. There was always a "deformed" loaf that was last one from the oven. We would tear it apart right then and put butter on our peice. So good!. And because it took so long to make the bread she always had a big ole pot of beans for dinner. Sometimes it was chili beans. Best meal ever.

I just finished watching this big batch bread video for about the third time as l have all of your videos. My kids and grandkids come in sometimes and say good grief Grandma is that all you do is watch the same videos over and over! But yes l do some of them l’ve probably watched 10 to 15 times clear back to your beginning videos.
I’m a lunch lady also…but a retired one for almost 2 years. I just want to say l love watching your videos and even sometimes just listening when lm busy. I’m so inspired and touched by whatever you’re doing and l just want to encourage you as you always encourage all of us to know that God loves you and is proud of you as His daughter for being about His business in this life. Thank you for all the hard work and inspiring words and spirit you so graciously give❤️

I stumbled upon your video's and they are great! I too love making bread and would watch my mother make bread, rolls, cinnamon rolls etc. growing up. I just cooked off 2 loaves as I hate wasting gas for just 1 loaf! Now I've got a large enamel pan out in the garage and you have shown me to go even bigger! Whoo-hoo,that is my plan coming up! God bless you and keep em' coming...

I do have a LOT of cookbooks and bless the woman who has a husband who enjoys “experimenting “ with recipes. I don’t. I still love my cookbooks. I used to make bread for our household. My mom gave me her “magic” bread bowl, a big green Tupperware bowl with a snap on lid. When your lid popped off, the dough was ready for loaf pans.

i have my momma old bread pan it was like yours only oval shaped . mom never measured anything. The old pan she taught me to make bread. . "put your warm water to here , add your yeast and some sugar.. grab your flour and start sifting . some oil or lard , and little salt." mix and kneed til your arms are tired and your back hurts . 10 to 14 loaves of bread and we were all happy as was the cousins. Miss my momma .. around the kitchen table with that old pan i learned so much . thanks for bring back the memories

What a wonderful video! I've made a lot of bread in my life--and loved every moment of doing so--but I have never made that much at a time. Wow! Very smart thing to do. I've never frozen my own rolls, either, but love this tip and will definitely use it. I love doing things like this ahead of time so I can use it when time is short. Homemade beats the dickens out of store bought in my book! Thanks for a lovely, informative video!
