    Our Argentine daughter-in-law made empanadas often. It was a special treat for the whole family! She went to heaven three years ago, leaving 7 children. I can see her beautiful hands, fluting the crusts of the “fried pies” as I watch this video. She passed her talent onto her 4 daughters (the oldest, 18) who continue their mama’s wonderful cooking skills! Thanks for your sweet reminders of food, not just for the stomach, but for the heart!

      My Grammy made tasty empanadas I don't remember the filling recipe although I know they where meat pies. But I do remember like yesterday she would put the filling in the dough and dip her finger in water and run it around the edge of the dough to help seal it ,then fold it over and use a fork to crimp it .Beautiful memories. Plus I liked the country ham with cheese pies she made . Family history is beautiful no matter what neck of the woods you from .peace and love to all.

    You and Mr. Brown are one of a kind! It is the most comforting place to go watching your videos! And it is both of you because you represent the way things should be and you are great role models! Your recipes are wonderful and since my husband passed in 2007, and I will be 70 soon, when I watch your videos and get busy in the kitchen, my sadness goes out the window and the good kitchen smells take over! Thank - you both for being there and sharing such precious times with all of us! You are a most amazing, fabulous couple!

    I was born in Nebraska and they have what they call Runza. It has hamburger meat and cabbage filling, in a bread dough. They are baked. Very delicious. Just another way to make meat pies :)

    My family's from Appalachian Mountain range in Eastern Ky. Area was mostly settled by Irish / Scottish/ Native Americans. My granny made these , we called them meat pies or fruit pies . We didn't have electric till I was 15 . She cooked on a wood stove that had a reservoir by the oven and a warmer cabinet above the stovetop , that's where she would put them pies! Mine aren't near as good ! Be blessed y'all!

      Funny how the same food that our parents and grandmama's cooked somehow just is not as good as what we make nowadays. Maybe it's the memories that made their food taste better. Oh well, that just means that the food that we cook nowadays will be the bomb for our kids and grand kids!😊

    Used love seeing my mom or grandma standing at the fence with my lunch as I came around the field on the tractor! It might be a biscuit with egg and bacon , cornbread and beans or some kind of fried pie! Life was good

      My grandma had a small green apple orchard. I'll never forget picking up apples with her and eating her fried apple pies! Yummy!

    Up here in Michigan they're called a Pasty or Pasties ( Pass-tee, or Pass-tee's ). Lots of root vegetables, carrots, rutabagas, potatoes, onions, and a good amount of meat, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, burger or chopped into smallish pieces. Usually 1 to 1 1/2 cups of filling, folded over like a calzone. Usually baked. Served with gravy or ketchup.

      they say they can tell us trolls by the fact that we order gravy with ours lol... ketchup is ok... but gravy gets you funny looks... guess it depends on who is cooking them for you. I really don't like rutabagas... but my sisters mother inlaws pasties are so good that I don't seem to mind them. I am going up there this coming week... I love it up there... So beautiful, the people are so friendly.

    My gran would always manage to add a smidgeon of shredded cabbage to almost EVERYTHING! JUST to stretch whatever, a but furthrr and sneak in a bit more nutrition. Of course if there was some leftover turnip...that would get mixed in too...growing up in the depression she had a serious *hatred* for waste! Of anything!

    I made a batch of pasties last week. These are not the exact Cornish or Michigan version, but they are so good, and I give them to friends and families as gifts. They freeze beautifully. I love that you posted this video and your channel is such a joy to watch!

    My friend from Ireland always had a "Boxing Day" party the day after Christmas here in TN. It was the first time I ever had a pork pastie made by his lovely wife, Patty. Sadly she passed away 4 years ago and her husband hasn't had a party or a pastie since. After seeing your video I decided it's high time I took up the torch and continued this wonderful tradition! I shall practice and perfect your recipe and hopefully by "Boxing Day" the Corona virus will be but a memory and we can all celebrate together once again! Thanks for this! xox

    My mom made dried fruit fried pies, peach, or apricot, once a week and I and my friend would run from the school bus to the house, so excited for those pies. Thank-you for this video. Maybe time to make fried pies in my kitchen, too.

    I love this video. The lady's voice is so relaxing, and the storyline of memories ties it all together and bonds us with OUR memories of mom's/grandma's/ etc, cooking that we grew up with, and reminds us of the dishes that have left an indelible mark on our hearts that rings true for so many of us. At 4:11 when she talks about 'pasties', it reminds me of growing up in England back in the 1960's and we would have pasties. They were called 'Cornish' pasties because they were first made by the Cornish tin miners in Cornwall, UK, who would take these parcels of food that was simple, and in some cases, made of 'left-over' food down the mines with them. At one end of the pasty was meat and potato, carrot and onion, and sometimes, at the OTHER end was a fruit filling such as apple or blackberry or fruit of some description which was the 'pudding' or 'dessert'. In some cases, a 'handle' was formed with the pastry so the miner could hold it with his dirty hands and eat the pasty without eating the 'dirt'. In the video, the lady calls it a 'paystee', but the pronunciation in UK is 'pastee' with the 'a' as in the word, 'cat' or 'hat'.

    I'm so excited to make some of these pies! I'm a widow, cooking for just me now and these would be perfect to make up a batch and throw in the freezer. I don't buy whole potatoes since they always seem to go bad before I get them used up, so I'll try some hash browns (frozen). And I think this would be a good way to "clean out the fridge" too. Thanks so much for this really helpful idea. I just ordered a set of the pie presses!

    Since you mentioned it the correct pronunciation is pasties with a short 'A' as 'past history'. the original pastie came from Cornwall in the UK. They are famous for them. Their particular secret is to add some turnip or as some say 'rutabega' or Swede to the potatoes, meat and onions. Thank you for this perfect presentation, with such a beautiful view of your home. I love it when the artist picks up that last bit of onion. This is so important. Anyone who wastes food carelessly and habitually is begging for a famine. (According to some.) I believe it, so I also take the trouble to not waste so much as a single grain of rice. You are cooking for Mr. Brown!! How wonderful, most of today's women have Mr. Brown on a hit list.

    We used to get pears from my grandmother's pear tree. Mom and I made pear pies. We started frying them , but switched to baking them. We brushed them withy butter when they were done and sprinkled cinnamon sugar. Your video reminded me of those wonderful memories. God Bless yall.

      You don't have to use wheat flour, you can use chickpea flour, or some other that is low in carbs.

    I grew up in New Zealand and meat pies were my favorite. Made in bakeries as single serving round double crust pies or at home in a rectangular baking pan by my mother. With mashed potatoes and green peas for sides. It's an old English dish since NZ is an English country. I found your vlog today and I have binge watched. From here in Kansas City I love your cooking!

      @@Research0digo she always just used a pie crust recipe. I always just look one up. I know she used lard or crisco in hers but I always use butter. The filling is juice preserved canned peaches, honey, butter and cinnamon.

    Oh My! Watching this video triggered a pleasant memory of over 55 years ago. My grandmother would roll her pie dough on a tea towel as well. Funny how I had completely forgotten until now.

    Mrs. Lori, I’m excited to make these meat pies😁 Having my husband and 15 yr old grandson home home for however long, as we deal with the virus.. it seems I just feed that grandson and he’s hungry again 😜 I can make these up and he can grab them as he gets hungry..again 🤪
    I use the Better than Bouillon, beef and chicken flavors, it’s so good!😊
    I made fruit “hand pies” ( that’s what grandma called them) at Thanksgiving on a whim, my bunch loved them so much they requested me to make again at Christmas. Needless to say, I make them often now 😁 but I didn’t know about the lil do dad you used, I’ll be ordering some of those asap! ☺️

    Boy what memories came rushing in. Here in Louisiana we call them meat pies, or we have crawfish pies, etc. The sweet pies, we call them by the ing within, like lemon, chocolate, etc. I so thank you Mss Lori, its been a couple years that we had fried pies. Blessings To Yall, Stay Safe

    We like to make a pork pie for the holidays. So it looks like we’ll be making these! I also dehydrated lots of apples last fall so we will do those for the sweet ones.

    My mom had a scratch bakery. A local restaurant had her make something similar they would bring her their end trimming of veggies, meat and cheese and she would make what they would call them Barney buns. Good memories. I want to make these now. Thanks so much!

      Julie in Sheboygan, WI. there is Flieshbrok. Phonetically it would be "Flyshbrock" But it is still a meat pie. Knowing it is Pasties leads me to believe you could be from Upper MI. or Northern WI. :)

      @@georgecoulter1935 I was born and raised in Green Bay, WI. Yoopers would travel down to "the big city" to shop and sometimes to relocate for good-paying paper mill jobs. We said, "Ya, hey," and "you guys," and probably a lot of other UP lingo I have forgotten. The accent is a bit Canadian, too.

    I'm from north Louisiana, and we call them fried pies in the area I'm from. My Mamaw made them and called them "Puppy Ears" to us kids. She folded them over and once she got them sealed they did look a little like puppy ears. :-) We loved them. Papaw's favorite was her peach fried pies. Those are some great memories. Thanks for bringing them back.

    in the uk years ago for the miners the wives used to make pastys one side had meat ans veg and the other half had fruit in it so you had your dinner and pudding so you only used one hand to eat it

    Where I was raised, in Michigan, we would have them at school. They called them Pasties (pronounced with the short “a” sound), it was one of my favorite things to eat growing up!

    My Alabama Granny & Aunts still make fried sweet fried pies my Granny was 98 when she went home but I remember some meat pies she made when I was little (I’m 57) I forgot until I saw this.

    Oh Miss Lori you brought so many memories! I’m from Chicago. My grandmother and mother made meat pasties (paaaaaa-steees). They were from Scotland and made the pies for the coal miners. But they made them in Canada and then in Chicago for other working folks. They made them for our dinners too. All of us developed our own variations, adaptations. I make a meat pie. Everyone loves it. They request it for holidays..thank you for making my day and I’m going to try your way. Love you. God bless.

    My ancestors were miners from Pennsylvania. We are Slavic Russian Ukrainian dissent. My grandmother made the best pasties ever and told wonderful stories how the women made those for the minors. They packed everything in there that was nutritious and easy for the men to eat

    I think my computer is listening to me: I made the filling and crust for lemon fried pies yesterday and rolled and cooked them today. I have some dough left over and been wondering what I should use it for. Duh! Meat pies! My Granny called them "pasties", which we grandkids immediately took to be "Patsies", as in Patsy Kline. So in my home, all meat pies are called "patsies" and the dessert fried pies are just fried pies.

    Dear Lori, Thank you for having this channel. Out dearly beloved aunt has developed dementia, and we miss how she "was" in her younger days. She lives in Danville, and we don't get down to see her like we used to. But, watching you and listening to you, its a lot like we remember her when she was well. She (and his grandmother0 basically saved my husband's life when he was a child. So, I love her and our memories of his grandmother, so much. I'm a suburbs girl, who my husband said I always sounded like a yankee to him, but it wasn't until I went to the real "South" that I understood what he meant. Our Aunt Sissie also worked in the lunchroom at the local schools and made sure those kids had good breakfasts, lunches and snacks for so many years. Whenever we'd visit, it was always all about her cooking for us and making us so happy!! Thanks again for your channel.

    In the north, specifically northern Michigan, they are called pass-tees. They are derived
    from the Cornish Pasty. Also delicious.

    I was born in PA and moved to the south when I was 5. After watching this video, I feel like my childhood was deprived. I think I've heard of fried pies, but I've never eaten one by any name. I think fried pies will become a staple in my dotage, LOL. You made this look easy. I'm hungry now.............

      My family is from PA my grandmother would make it she called them meat pies, and if she was being lazy she would make a big pie. We would cut it up like pie, lol I also remember the name hand pie they used to make them for the coal miners to pack in their lunch pails yummy

We call these pasties in this area they are traditionally made with corned beef and vegetables and they were originally known as a meal in your hand especially for workmen. We also bake the pastry and I’m told they are really delicious don’t eat a lot of pastry myself, use it as a treat. Take care, keep safe love Mary from England.

    My mother made a filling from cooked dried apples with some sugar, allspice and cinnamon and maybe a bit of butter. She made her pastry with lard or Crisco and she baked her hand pies in the oven...running some butter over them after they came out of the oven. We used a saucer to cut out the crust and folded it over the filling and crimped the edges with a fork. Half moon shaped pies. YUM! That's how hillbillies from the Smokey Mtns of North Carolina made them. Love that pie crimper...I'll have to get one.

      I have used dehydrated apples too, when making Texas Fried Apple pies w bacon and brown sugar. My grandfather used to make them when I was young. I can taste them now!

    I used to work with a nurse who did her training in Eastern Pennsylvania. She had an Amish meat pie recipe that used carp. Cabbage, spices, some shaved carrot, sometimes a bit of red bell pepper, and then she would add thin strips of carp and then fry them. They were always good. Another friend of mine has done these with chopped crab, shrimp, or lobster.

    My husband loves empanadas. The ones he ate when we took a cruise had chorizo in them. I have never made them for him. My 89 year old mother in law sent him some fried apple and raisin pies last week. He loves her raisin pies.

    I loaded up a rental car with my mother-in-law and a few of my kids a couple of years ago to see my sister, who had a very serious illness and surgery to go through. We went from IA to LA, and on the way back from a hurried, harried, blessed trip, we found a place in Arkansas that had some delicious fried pies. My then 81year old MIL had never eaten one! It was a taste of my childhood revisited, as my momma would make fruit fried pies. Thank you for sharing- such yummy goodness ❤️

    I usually make the dough from CRISCO SHORTENING. It's the filling you want to be tasty and like you say, there are many different ones. Potatoes, onions, peas and meat is always good. In a pinch, Crescent rolls can be used as long as the filling is cooked.

    I’m so glad you are okay. I mentioned to Buddy and Ms. Lippy that I was concerned after I heard about Arkansas tornado and was not sure how close that was to you.
    Thanks for the meat pies video today. I have had empanadas and pierogies, which I believe I are similar to meat pies. I will definitely try this recipe.

    Just found this video. My 89 yr old Dad grew up in the hills of Wesley Arkansas, and grew up with a lot of meat pies...and fried peach pies. He told me about them more than a few times.

      French Canadian and we add cloves to the pork and onion salt covered by water and slow cooked all day till water evaporates then mashed potatoes and into 2 crust pie , heaven

      Cornish folk will be up in arms! Lol. There is a very specific recipe and they dont like just any one being called by their name. The obe thing is, they are always made from beef, onion, potatoes and turnip. The meat should be raw when the pie is made. It is baked in the oven and always had a thick join, so that the miners could hold the pie by that, with their dirty hands and it could then be discarded.
      When I lived in South Africa there was a fish and chip shop that made fried pies, but they were deep fried in oil. They were very good.

    Natchitoches, Louisiana is the oldest permanent settlement in this region. Established in 1714 they are famous for meat pies. Prior to covid they had a big meat pie festival every year. Very popular tourist destination. Thanks for the video!

    So many times i try recipes from on-line and they turn out so-so, but your recipe is OUTSTANDING! I followed the directions exactly, putting together my own filling: fried one onion, a few peas, 12 oz canned chicken drained, salt, pepper, and a bit of chicken bouillion; i made a small package of those cheese-flavored mashed potatoes, with a bit less fluid called for, separately; when i assembled, i put potato layer and then meat mixture on top; i bought one of those presses at local amish store, works great! They were flakey and delicious, and i froze some too. THANK YOU!!

    Paas-tie. A British delight! A man had a tiny fairy house kiosk off the highway 101 frontage road in Mountain View, CA. I took my British boss for a surprise at lunchtime one day and she was thrilled. Meat and potatoes with some carraway seeds, I guess tasted like home. The last time I saw him he was at a Stanford University hangout area...

    My great grandparents made these a lot, great aunts, etc...they were a meal miners would put in the lunch box. They would flip over their shovel, use the lantern from their hard hats to heat them up. Ta da...hand pie.
    Rutabaga , what ever meat, potato, onion, occasionally shredded carrot. also known as a poor man pie. We keep the tradition going also, I learned from my mom and great aunt. Mom doesn't cook now, so i mail her pasty's often. Doesn't really matter how ya say it...they equal delicious just the same, fried or baked.
