We filmed this at night on the highway because we wanted to try something different and have the roads mostly to ourselves. Big thanks to everyone that helped us out with filming! Let us know what you liked / didn't like.
Gotta commend you guys on this video. You guys think about the details of every shot. Sick shots of Toronto, awesome cars, and I like the format with 3 guys in 3 cars. Can imagine that it's difficult with audio but I barely noticed it being weird. BY THE WAY, if you ever need another 3rd reviewer, can you call me cuz I live in Toronto and I can even throw in an FRS if you need to compare it with anything :p
its because we're trying to get in the grove while on a 4 way call, 3 cars, 5 cameras, 3 mics, bad reception on one phone, first time trying 3 cars. it was hectic, lots of cameras and coordination. It'll be better next time.
- It seems like you guys are sort of yelling at the camera. (mostly the blonde guy, sorry) - The pauses between people speaking is sort of weird. - The frequent switching between mics is a little distracting. - The intonation of the lines is delivered almost exactly the same each time, which adds to the unnatural feeling. It just doesn't feel like you guys are having a conversation. My suggestion for a video like this would be to change the format. Shoot each guy driving each of their first cars. After the first drive have everyone park and shoot a short regular conversation of first impressions. Shoot a short take of each person driving the next two cars (round 2 and 3). If you stopped after the 2nd round you probably wouldn't have much content for the final conversation. Try to hit some of the highlights in the round 2/3 footage, but leave some content for the final conversation.
Michael A The STI is manual only, and the WRX you can get in a CVT but you really shouldn't. It gets the same gas mileage as an STI, and it's a WRX, it's meant to be manual
Yesterday I bought a 2018 Civic Type R. I saw one on the road, thought it was an amazing looking car, watched this review (plus the other two Type R reviews on this channel), considered it some more, and pulled the trigger. Thanks TheStraightPipes for providing informative and entertaining reviews!
I like that you guys aren't just purely going for your own car. You actually give a good opinion on the other cars as well which I like! I hate it when owners only want their own cars. Just as if they don't look at the other cars on the road and be like DAMM! That one's nice too!
ooh hahaha, well still! I really like the way you guys review the cars, it's a twist! All giving opinions, and switching cars every few minutes! Keep doing what you're doing, because it's amazing!!! 🎉
Now come on guys. All three cars aligned during 12 out of those 13 minutes, and not even a short roll race????? A missed opportunity in my opinion, it would have interested a lot of people! Good review otherwise ;)
I drive a 2013 outback and the touchscreen feels like one of those Ultimate PDAs from 2008. I see even after 4 years they haven't upgraded that. I think you guys need to remake this video with a Golf R.
El Cien Outdated but still very competitive. According to Caranddriver magazine, the Focus RS is only .1 second faster to 60 than the STi and holds the same quarter mile time as the STi. *Keep in mine too that the Focus RS has 45 more HP and 60 more TQ.* Subaru never really changed the STi because its still competitive within its segment.
Now. Forgive me if I'm wrong but STI are not really straight-line-type-of-cars out of the factory. Which is why I go back to my first comment... this video doesn't outline the corner-hugging capabilities of an STI.
El Cien I agreed with you on that point. +1 They are corner-hugging. STi are track and mountain kings. They brake later and turn in faster than a lot of cars. They can probably rival low slung exotics in turning. I was more suggesting your "outdated" comment. (No disrespect though.) I just wanted to point out that Subaru never really updated the engine because the engine was still compete within its segment.
Great vid guys. I daily my RS and love it, sure the suspension's a bit too hard in some instances but I've owned it for almost a year and still haven't walked away from it without looking back and smiling. The Smiles Per Gallon on this thing are worth the sacrifices (which in my opinion are easy enough to swallow).
Im a new "Straight Piper" to this channel... i've never seen such a good dialogue review, some guys just get on the cars and drag... without telling us the pro's and con's about the cars...
Doesn't the Type R have more space in the back, and can haul more stuff? Honda's generally are pretty value stable too, don't know if Subaru's are (even) better at it though.
Great comparison review, guys! I haven't driven any of these vehicles, but based off of information... I am leaning towards the Type R. From one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work! I'll definitely be remaining a 'Straight Piper'! 👊🏽
Honestly you can't go wrong with any of these cars. I have a 2017 Subaru sti myself and I love the car. If your gonna get the type R, you might as well wait cause every dealer I have went to was asking like 20k over msrp which is ridiculous. The car is great and would be an awesome track monster and will definitely retain its value somewhat. The focus is also an awesome car and with a very good platform. Subaru definitely needs to make some changes to the sti but then again you are buying a street legal rally car not a luxury car.
Subie Jason The only reason the Type R is over MSRP is because its the first Type R in the states. *That's literally it. The hype.* Is it worth the hype? I think so. Would I buy one? Nah. I'll get a Subaru STi if I were to pick of these 3. You also made a good point at the end. The STi is a street legal rally car, not some high-performance gun it at the light type of car. This is why I get annoyed when some "so called Subaru fans" ask Subaru for a 400HP STi. A 400HP STi would never happen stock. A 400HP STi would cost way too much and it would definitely remove itself from this segment of cars and enter lambo territory.
Thats fine... But think about this WRC best awd Ford RS Old days ...Escort crossword...then focus now fiesta lots off wins. All that its on the RS. And they fuck lolol so all cars have issues. the head gasket on models 16 AND early 2017 and STI the awd some broke at lunch sorry...
I love your reviews! Clean and concise. Your style feels very engaging as if i am part of a full blown conversation but not overbearing. Props to you all and keep up the good work! You guys officially have a new subscriber!
Really enjoyed that guys, I love the Type R but I'm leaning towards the RS, must be drift mode! Can't believe the STI is nowhere really, owned 6 Imprezas over the years and I remember the days here in the UK back in 98(showing my age lol) when there was a 12 month waiting list for a UK turbo. How things change. Loved the night time review, worked really well.
You guys are serious rivals to The Grand Tour and waaaaay better than (the new) Top Gear. Honest real world comments about things like seat comfort, daily driving and exhaust note. Who GAF about 1/4 mile times if it's your daily driver - keep up the good work.
By the way, congratulations on making it big on RUclips. That is evident from the views on this video, and all the people questioning your sexuality. Keep it up, keep it real, make more vids.
Watching this video 2 years later I equate it to this... in 2 years Yuri's driving skills have improved as much as Jakub's video review skills. At the beginning of the channel Yuri was just learning to drive performance cars where Jakub was more at home on a track or in cliche corner. The inverse was true on camera doing like 30 second takes on the review. Now the channel's quality is so smooth'd out that Jakub can talk smoothly about any car and Yuri can rip any car no problem.
Great review!! Month ago I purchased 2018 sti. I have always wanted a sti and finally pulled the trigger. I really liked the RS and would have went that route but agree totally with the seats complaint. My shoulders felt rolled over and couldn't get comfortable. I live in snow country in upstate New York, and buying a front wheel drive R wouldn't work. I think any of these you'll be in heaven. Nice work fellas
I laughed when that guy said “You buy one right now and sell it later and probably still get your money back.” I saw dealerships put at least $10k-$20k on top of the already $40k MSRP and you expect they can sell this civic for for at least have that price. Doubt it. Soon as you drive it off the lot you lose that chunk
If you're buying the Type R for more than MSRP you're a fool. I have two friends that bought it for MSRP. Anyone who is paying $10-$20K over MSRP for the Type R is a buffoon, plain and simple.
I agree with @Hayden Anderson and @Jonas Blain I've seen plenty of videos on all 3 of these cars and I keep leaning more and more toward the type R each time. I originally started out wanting the Focus RS but with all the complaints of breakdowns I started to have second thoughts. Now I know there are plenty of people out there who never had problems even after 20k miles but the amounts of complaints opposed to those who don't have problems make me feel like purchasing that car is a gamble....At over $41,000 that's quite a gamble! Throw on top of that the fact that Ford is no longer making them and the only options you have are used or brand new at the dealer. With dealer mark ups that's not happening... So basically for me it comes down to a choice between the STI and the Type R. I also know the type R dealers have mark ups which is why I just plan on having it built from the Honda website and shipped and just pick it up afterwards to avoid the extra $10k-$20k the dealer will try to throw on it. I love the STI as well but like I said I keep leaning more toward the type R and this video helped with that and a big push from this video ruclips.net/video/xiKWUL4iEGQ/видео.html Watch it from the 3:00 mark to the 4:20 mark to get an idea of where I'm at. Also if you watch till the end it shows the differences in performance and how they compare against other cars in the segment... Like Hayden Anderson pointed out above..."The Type R is the one to buy!"
Great video guys, nice work. Should say when you compare torque steer between those 3, that the Type R is the only FWD car, so their engineers must have worked miracles to get torque steer down to being even comparable with two AWD cars!
The Type R supposedly has won in every category this year from 0-60 speed, handling, 1/4 mile time, and track time. i am not entirely sure how a fwd car can beat an awd car off the line that easily but Honda definitely has some black magic working for them ;-). i think i might start looking back Honda's way after being a sole Nissan lover this whole time...
In terms of performance heck yeah. I own a type r but my buddy owns an rs and another buddy of mine owns an sti and we go to car meets together and we’re known as the trio hot hatches
Subscribed and hit the little bell! Consider me a Straight-Piper! You guys are exceptional. You've really outdone yourselves in this latest video. I know it's tough juggling all the cameras, mics, 3 way phone call for the shoot, editing editing and MORE editing. Haha Keep this up. STAY TRUE TO YOUR ROOTS. Keep the intros and outros short, like they currently are. (I've unsubscribed from a lot of channels cause they end up getting bloated and filled with pointless jabbering/adverts before actually getting to the "meat" of the content.) So, seriously, y'all are rad. 👍🏼
+Christopher Sparkman thanks for noticing how much work actually goes into these. We also hate long intro and outros. We just do stuff we would like to watch and hope people like it
KrayzieBuddha yeah man. That's why I stopped watching Matt Farah's The Smoking Tire. At first, his intro was fine...until he started selling all his crap at the beginning of each vid. (T-shirts, sunglasses, watches, etc) Then, as his channel got more popular, he gradually started coming off as kinda pompous and arrogant to me. Just my opinion though. These guys just seem more down to earth to me. Organic is probably the right word.
Ford has the coolest custom modes cause of all their work with Ken Block. I would bet he had a lot of influence in the "drift/baja/line lock" modes. Keep putting out good reviews guys I love your channel!
You were going 30, you can get ticketed for going too slowly as well you know. Besides, I'm not saying go from 80 to vmax, 30 to 75 isn't going to get you arrested, especially if you have the road to yourself.
Whatever. Seems like there's a performance testing embargo on these cars because I haven't seen any real performance comparisons for any of these cars. No lap time comparisons, no acceleration comparisons, all we have is paper bragging rights to go on. All I see is scripted videos that highlight the on paper differences. These "content" creators would do well to realize we don't care about driving impressions, it's been done to death already, us performance enthusiasts that buy these cars want to see what they can do.
@@TheStraightPipes I'm personally going with the sti on this one. as good as the type r is. that value is only going to go up and higher and higher. and I don't want to save up the money over the course of 6-7 months only to realize it's still too expensive. the sti on the other hand is "perfectly balanced as things should be" don't get me wrong I fucking love the type r but that value might be the Achilles heal. ya boi going broke on that one. plus those mods too, at least for me.
The RS is faster around a track than the Type R 99.5% of the time. In 100% PERFECT conditions, the Honda might eek out the occasional faster lap by a tenth or two.
You know the Subaru has had many problems right. They have refined them over the years but it took them a long time. I also own a subbie with a ej25 so I'm not a fan boi.
Great episode. Thanks! This is the holy trinity of compact performance cars. Having all 3 would make one incredible dream car garage. With all manuals being replaced with automatics and the push to make everything on 4 wheels electric why do I feel like we are reaching the end of a golden age of enthusiast-focused cars :( With the RS gone we do now have the Hyundai Veloster N to take its place. I am a proud owner of a Honda Civic Type R. Word to the wise, if you like ANY of these types of cars, find a way to get one more sooner than later or be very successful in life so you can get one in the aftermarket after they have appreciated in value.
Really nice comparison guys! I like your comments and at the same time it's fun to watch. I appreciate all the 3 cars but I bought the STI 2018 as a weekend car. Surely the most "out of date" of those 3, but undisputably the one with most authentic racing DNA. Cheers!
4:20 Never have I heard any driving enthusiast say that the lower to the ground they are sitting, the better. NOT being able to see anything around you is not advantageous.
We filmed this at night on the highway because we wanted to try something different and have the roads mostly to ourselves. Big thanks to everyone that helped us out with filming! Let us know what you liked / didn't like.
Excellent review!!!
Thanks buddy!!
TheStraightPipes looks great with the cars neat led's. I'm going to Montreal this coming week, will y'all be filming there?

+Trevor Harris not for a few weeks, going to Quebec city though
The dialog feels very unnatural. It's like it's a discussion between Siri, Google, and Alexa.
its because we're trying to get in the grove while on a 4 way call, 3 cars, 5 cameras, 3 mics, bad reception on one phone, first time trying 3 cars. it was hectic, lots of cameras and coordination. It'll be better next time.

It just doesn't feel like you guys are having a conversation. My suggestion for a video like this would be to change the format. Shoot each guy driving each of their first cars. +John Brooks yeah we'll figure it out. Yuri and I can do 2 of us in separate cars well, adding a 3rd person complicates things a bit. Thanks!
I'd ditch the 3rd guy. Too quiet and when he did say something it just seemed robotic and scripted.
Nouvellecosse shari was a special guest. It was his first time filming with us. Be nice
They all win because they only come in manuals.
+iMiguelAOG this man gets it
iMiguelAOG doesn't sti also come in auto, more specifically cvt?
+Michael A not in North America
WRX does, saw one last weekend. I threw up a little in my mouth, people that buy these should be put on a list for extermination.
Michael A The STI is manual only, and the WRX you can get in a CVT but you really shouldn't. It gets the same gas mileage as an STI, and it's a WRX, it's meant to be manual
It’s 100% like choosing between charmander (r) squirtle (rs) or bulbasaur (sti)
Lol true
Charmander is better tho and not a jdm fan but the type r is the best car in this race/comparison
Zanthum I agree. It brings the most smiles per gallon.
type r = bulbasaur, focus rs= charmander, sti= squirtle
Sti is squirtle for the tmic water spray. Hehe
R.I.P. EVO you will be missed
My gosh.. this was incredibly unbiased. Subbed.
+Cal Ward that's how we look at every car, watch our other reviews. Thanks for subbing :)
TYPE R BAYBEEEEE
Same
I like that you guys aren't just purely going for your own car.
You actually give a good opinion on the other cars as well which I like!
I hate it when owners only want their own cars.
Just as if they don't look at the other cars on the road and be like DAMM! That one's nice too!
+Rick de jong we don't own any of these cars, we're journalists reviewing them. Watch our other reviews

+Rick de jong thanks!
I guess you've never watched EverydayDriver...
And of course the evo x is always left out becous it slowly going extinct
Now I'm going to lay down and cry as an evo fan 😢
The Type R won!... and then it snowed... ;)
I gotta have AWD for my daily.
Simple fix, winter tires :)
Lived in Boston for years. Snow ain't shit for my FWD Civic.
AWD is overrated for winter driving. Snow tires on -1 or -2 wheels are safer and provide far more confidence under braking when you need it most.
anlamıyom ama helal olsun
@@Lessenjr That's a lie, unless you have never driven AWD with winter tiers.....
Test drove all 3 and including the golf r, ended up with the focus rs. It's an all around perfect package for what you get.
Now come on guys. All three cars aligned during 12 out of those 13 minutes, and not even a short roll race????? A missed opportunity in my opinion, it would have interested a lot of people! Good review otherwise ;)
+louisolivierfortin we like to keep our licenses so we can keep driving cars and not review buses
There are a lot of car reviewers out there and remarkably few bus reviewers. This despite the huge number of people riding buses. Possible niche???
+Nouvellecosse maybe a special episode haha
+TheStraightPipes which municipal transit is best municipal transit?
+Beach5and great question
Subaru fanboy here: everyone failed to mention which car hugs corners better. I do agree the STI is outdated in comparison.
+El Cien it's a toss up between the type R and Focus RS. The RS is on significantly better tires from the factory (Michelin pilot sport Cup2)
I drive a 2013 outback and the touchscreen feels like one of those Ultimate PDAs from 2008. I see even after 4 years they haven't upgraded that. I think you guys need to remake this video with a Golf R.
El Cien Outdated but still very competitive. This was good video but,it's so awkward to watch cuz it sounds soooooo scripted!!
+devil devil our headsets had terrible reception so we were yelling. Sorry. Watch our other reviews. Unscripted
TheStraightPipes you responded, love that
Damn he said it all with that quote! "I don't want my car to be a working progress, I want it good right out of the box".
was driving my camaro and saw you guys filming this

sti any day, keeps its value pretty well and have lots of space for the kids.
And you can take it off road on the weekends
AND bring it on the track
And quad exhaust is the best
Doesn't the Type R have more space in the back, and can haul more stuff? Honda's generally are pretty value stable too, don't know if Subaru's are (even) better at it though.
Derick Wong Friedrich type r’s have cup holder in the back, but I dont think those cup holder can fold to have a 5th seat.(you can correct me)
Oh damn. This underated channel has quality. Hi from Indonesia :)

I like honda civic type R
You want valve clearance adjustment issues?cool
Why.
It looks like it’s been through a crash.
Because you're a winner. You don't want RS head gasket issues and engine seizing or STI ringland issues that appear after basic bolt ons.
Me too
Literally my three favorite cars...
I was debating between the sti and the RS but you guys just solidified my choice drift mode here I come
+dcdipper98 oh man no question get the RS
U know what, this is how it should be. Testing car's simultaneously. 👍 up guys.
+fizzy White thanks
Ya I'm going for the focus can beat that blue. It's so beautiful.
yall doing a review at night while driving in 3 different dope cars litty 🔥🔥🔥
High five to being a straight piper!
+Simon L Yesssssssss
Great video guys, nice work.
Should say when you compare torque steer between those 3, that the Type R is the only FWD car, so their engineers must have worked miracles to get torque steer down to being even comparable with two AWD cars!
From someone who has owned a sti, oh man the focus rs is a breath of fresh air man its amazing
loved it. Toronto represent!! Hope to run into you guys some day.
The Canadian -Top Gear- The Grand Tour!
+NootNoot! Haha thanks
We're the Canada Top Gear US (with Tanner, Rutledge and Adam... that's the best top gear of all time)

Most exclusive model:-)
1. RS
2. STi hatch, oh wait, it doesn't exist
3. Type R (wouldn't be 3rd IF it had all wheel drive)
Coming back to the first video I watched on this channel :0. You guys have come such a long way can't believe it's been 3 years!
Best review on internet ever
+Onkar Indurkar haha thanks
RS for me all the way.
RS-Best front end
Type-r- overall body lines
Sti- rear end
In terms of performance heck yeah. I own a type r but my buddy owns an rs and another buddy of mine owns an sti and we go to car meets together and we’re known as the trio hot hatches
“Unless you’re a Subaru fan, then STi STi STi”
Love this video. It felt casual, like friends hanging out & chatting, yet informative.
Man i cant wait to graduate from uni and get my focus RS. i watch this video weekly for motivation.
Have fun with the head gasket.
LooNey Yang old meme.
Why does this sound like bad acting? Is it scripted?
+Joe Blog because we were yelling at eachother on phones with poor reception and working with Shari for the first time. Watch our other reviews
It's cool they sound like robots
😂😂😂😂😂
Joe Blog sounded like parrots. One says, "agressive" and, sure enough, the other two enthusiastically repeat it.
4:20 someone is getting pulled over.
We just do stuff we would like to watch and hope people like it
Seriously, like a 15-30 sec for a fuckin intro is ridiculous.
Christopher Sparkman I don't know who is that but i'll take your word for it lol.
+Christopher Sparkman we just try to be normal dudes because we're normal dudes
Really cool video!
killer video! I love each Vehicle and occupant comparison reviews . Im Buying the RS for sure now! . Thanks Guys !!
my fave out of these is the RS, but I'm a GTI fanboy all the way. ;P
07:02 - 07:08 English roads for mile after mile. Well, where I live it's like that. I don't know why we pay road tax.
I love subies but I’d pick the RS
im saving up for mine for 2020!!! I CANNOT WAIT!! huge awd and ford nerd here ! lol
JohnPaul Sein be ready to use that rench. Rs have more problems than any car u can think of. But congrats still a sick car
@@donny-2964 that's weird I have heard otherwise
JohnPaul Sein I’m just sayin the things I know about the rs but hey I’m just a person on the internet don’t let me tell u wat to do
@@Sabre912 I thought the Focus was being discontinued period. Including the RS and ST models. 2019 was apparently the last year
Ford has the coolest custom modes cause of all their work with Ken Block. I would bet he had a lot of influence in the "drift/baja/line lock" modes. Keep putting out good reviews guys I love your channel!
top video non biased and unique in exciting way but drag race makes you excited for no reason
+Denzil Panchhiya thanks. No drag race because we have no money
STi all the way.. 😘😘😘
I like them all but I made my decision.
Mac Sti nice choice lmao
Croix Kelley thanks man✌️.
Mac Sti a good one i would say. Type r is all smoke no meat. RS is respectable tho.
I'm going with STI too, but like a 2016. nice color choice
Same. It was down to the rs and sti but the rs is 50k and sti 38k. The focus interior looks outdated as well especially the gauge cluster.
WOAHHH YES
Finally this is the moment i wanna watch this year
3 HOT HATCH
TYPE-R, Focus RS, WRX STI
NICE Big Thumps Ups :D
+nikko nardo thanks!
The STi is not a hatch, it's a sedan. Like it should be.
you are messing things up, the only hatch subaru has nowadays is Impreza (mb I'm wrong, but still).
This is absolutely the BEST way to give reviews for these cars, i'm lovin' it
So well done gentlemen!! If there are RUclips awards...!
+tiredrummertube haha thanks
You had all 3 cars on the freeway to yourselves and you didn't bother to test which one is faster from a roll? SMH....
+Rolando Tillit we enjoy keeping our drivers licences
You were going 30, you can get ticketed for going too slowly as well you know. Besides, I'm not saying go from 80 to vmax, 30 to 75 isn't going to get you arrested, especially if you have the road to yourself.
Rolando Tillit They will if the cops figure out they are street racing.
+Rolando Tillit set it up with the manufacturers for us and we'll do it. We don't have budget for tires or anything
Final Verdict: VTEC
Rs
@@TheStraightPipes I'm personally going with the sti on this one.
as good as the type r is. that value is only going to go up and higher and higher.
and I don't want to save up the money over the course of 6-7 months only to realize it's still too expensive.
the sti on the other hand is "perfectly balanced as things should be"
don't get me wrong I fucking love the type r but that value might be the Achilles heal.
ya boi going broke on that one.
plus those mods too, at least for me.
@@Meowblivion Ehh the STI really ain't worth. Plus them engines are known to bust.
The RS is faster around a track than the Type R 99.5% of the time. In 100% PERFECT conditions, the Honda might eek out the occasional faster lap by a tenth or two.
Great job on this one, guys! This is definitely my definition of squad goal, and that was the only thing in my mind throughout this whole video!
+Son Dao right on
I bought a Type R this week. Got Aegean Blue Metallic. It’s very quiet. The auto rev match is incredible.
Sadly I had to take off my exhaust because they were not stalk. Loved my 2017 type R.
Date night car= Type R
Daily car= Focus RS
Race car= STI

HELLA wrong

nyte you got it backworda
best taillights? got them mr. crab looking lights lmao
The Type R is the crab. LOL
They stayed away from the rs because they thought the engine would self destruct.
Cheers!
+Martin Cavina thanks!
#TeamSubaruWRX/STI
4:20 Never have I heard any driving enthusiast say that the lower to the ground they are sitting, the better. NOT being able to see anything around you is not advantageous.
Should have raced u guys
what a great review. you should do more comparisons like this (3 similiar cars)
verrryyy cool format to do reviews.
+AguyNamedHorse thanks
