Is the 2020 Honda Civic Type R a BETTER performance car than a Subaru WRX STI Type RA?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 авг 2020
- The Honda Type R has been refreshed for 2020. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that is producing 306HP & is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The Subaru Type RA is the first WRX STI to ever receive a carbon fiber roof to compliment the carbon fiber adjustable wing. Under the hood is a 2.5L turbocharged flat-4 that produces 310HP & also is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The Type R is FWD & Type RA is AWD. Is the 2020 Honda Civic Type R a BETTER performance car than a Subaru WRX STI Type RA?

I have a type R so prefer R obviously. But STi also a great car. A true car enthusiast loves all cars and appreciates and respects everyone else's cars.
I could not have said it any better KJ!
I chose the STI solely for the AWD. Im in northern Ohio and I would be in a ditch if I had the Type R.
golf r is the superior car

Honestly personal preference. I love my Type R, however I love the way Subaru's sound with an exhaust. Every car has it's own perks.
I could not have said it any better!

@@RaitisRides but Joe, in the video, you said that you are going with the Type R. Which is it?
Troy Burtwell he owned a type r
The RA marks the end of an era. The CTR is the gateway to Honda’s future. Nice job objectively reviewed both cars.
I love the way that you put that Apollo!
FK8 era sadly is coming to an end as well! Time to hold type r owners this FK8 will be iconic for the future!
The Subaru is old school in such a good way, love the mechanical feel.
💯 agreed
mechanical is a stretch.. lol.
I’ve own a Subaru STI before but After hopping on a type R, I didn’t look back. it just performs better overall.
mechanical? you mean agricultural?
The Honda is the better performer. If you get a lot of inclement weather where you live, the Subaru could be the better choice.
That is so very true Dave!
Last winter, I was really surprised when I saw a type R that got up a snowy/icy hill without losing any traction, while most RWD performance vehicles (even big ford tow trucks) didn't stand a chance.
Don't forget that winter wheels can make a big difference even on a front wheel drive car.
I live where its sunny 3/4 of the year. Fk8 all day for me. If you live where there is ice and snow, get the sti period!.. dry vs dry.. fk8 wins any day anytime
I would not buy these cars and drive them in the winter for a number of reasons. For winter, I have an older Highlander on snow tires and that rocks!
STI for me. Something about the EJ engine and the pedigree of WRC speaks to what I want in a sports sedan. But the Type R is no slouch either. 🤙🏼
I totally agree with you Anton.
I'd pick the subaru, I know honda is more reliable but I cant resist the rumble of that boxer engine 💨
Are you biased? Subarus are reliable as well. Knock on would I have owned 4 others and never had an issue.
Agreed. I have a Stage 2+ STi. 44k miles. O issues. I beat on it but follow proper maintenance as well.
@@ivanroque7171 Smart man Ivan!
@@RaitisRides Do you modify your Subarus? Based on my experience the inline 4 of honda can push more power than the boxer engine.
Eh if we talking real performance, the type R is in the top 100 lap times in Nurburgring, the STi isn’t even in top 100. STi’s drivetrain ain’t all that good either, you can have problems with if you pushing 300+ torque, not to mention the engine can’t make over 500hp without forged internals, your engine will blow, plus the gasket problems. Honda is better for performance and reliability. Very big aftermarket for Honda. The same boxer engine has been around for 20+ years and a lot of people are upset that Subaru hasn’t made a new engine yet.
I’m the owner of a 2019 type r and I must say this car is fun to drive! My only complaint is the horn. Haha! For such a beast of a car the horn seems out of place. The type r pulls hard! It just keeps pulling and handles great! It’s my daily driver and i believe Honda got it right with this car! Way to go Honda!
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
Your review nailed it. I have an '18 Type R but always lusted after an STI, or Evo. Both are great, the chance to get a deal on a used Type R sealed it. That, plus my favorable experience with a '17 SI. Living in the desert, I don't need awd, whereas I do prefer lighter cars. But no wrong choices here. I have not driven an STI since the 2004-6 versions, while the 2018 WRX (non-STI) did not win me over. The STI pulls harder from a dig, but once you are moving at all, the Type R clearly takes over. Seats in the Type R are just better. My only knock on my CTR is the large turning circle compared to the Subie, and the lack of a real hand brake. Nitpicking. The Type R has been tons of fun, and works unbelievably well as my daily driver. The SI punched way above its class and price point, this is a major step up. I even like the looks better than the 2020- more horizontal lines bisecting the fake vents just makes it look busier to me, not better. And it is so stable at -ahem-'highway' speeds. Your dream garage descripion - spot on. I have driven the Focus RS, which has a unique handling and throttle feel. Also amazing. But I need my cars to not detonate their engines.
Thanks for sharing your great input and perspective!
I have a 2020 Type R and I’m happy with my purchase. Almost a year of ownership and I’ve never regretted the decision. No hate to the STI’s though. I have a couple friends with them and I don’t knock on them at all. I feel like a true car enthusiast sees the pro and cons of every car. Like I hate pumped in exhaust audio on the R. Not really having full control of the modes like the Veloster N has. 20 wheels. Small gas tank. So the R is far from perfect like any car, but no regrets at all.
I was making this same choice last year. Ended up going with the Type R mainly due to the better gas mileage (I put a ton of miles on my cars) but more importantly also because I didn’t know when the next Sti was going to come out. Really wanted to get a Sti (we have an Outback for family duties) but given the Sti was on the final year decided to pull the trigger on the Type R. Love that thing, it does everything well. Both legends in my book.
My personal preference, despite all the goodies the Type-R has, the STI has more of a driver focus feel and more connectivity with the car over the Type-R. I've never driven the Type-R yet, but with all the reviews I've seen on Raitis and other reviews, I must say I do feel tempted to go that route. I just still can't get passed that body style haha. In a way, it's growing on me. Thanks Joe and Raitis ride for another phenomenal review. You guys rock!!!

Type R is latest model and STI is old school. Each car has advantage, but I live in Chocago. Chicago has very different weather, it seems like depends on where you live. I have 2018 STI and it fit on my needs on every weather condition requirements. If I live in dry and warm weather area, I might choose Tyle R but winter in Chicago is pretty bad with snow and ice. @@RaitisRides BTW you are so on point when you mentioned that having a Ford Focus RS, Honda Civic Type R and a Subaru WRX STI would make one incredible dream car garage. I am fortunate to be a proud owner of a 2019 Honda Civic Type R. Not only is it one of the best cars I have ever owned, but it is one of the best cars I have ever driven. One regret I have is that I was not in a position to get the Subaru WRX STI S209 when they came out. That car really is something special. Again keep up the great work! You are appreciated!
Saving up for a Type-R as of now. But that Subaru looks sick. Nice vid! Very detailed and nice
Love the comparison video! Type R looked so fast and it does look like they did their magic on that 2020 Type R 😅 Hey at the end of the day I would love to own both cars as well

AWD makes the STi better for anyone living in a heavy winter area. No question, I'm a Vermonter and its not even a debate.
So true!
What a sweet review. The Subaru is dire for an update, but is such an awesome car. The Civic Type R in that blue is absolutely beautiful, and like you said has such crazy grip - especially for a FWD. Not this would ever happen, but it would be pretty crazy if Acura came out with the Integra - or whatever they want to call it - and had a Type R with SH-AWD based off the Type R Civic. We already know Acura is going to kill the ILX, so why not dream a little.
Thanks for letting me share these two with you. Big changes are coming for both of these!
I had a si then traded it in for a sti im so glad I got the sti instead of the type r it’s just a more traditional sports car and you can’t go wrong with the all wheel drive.

I think the fake engine noise wasn’t included in the video but Im amazed on your honest opinion even if you own a STI Type RA.
Overall I like the Sti more, the rear of the civic type r seems over styled with too much going on.
You are not alone in those thoughts.
Being at a mature age much older than the demographic for these cars went with 2019 STI Limited. If the Type R styling was just a little less extroverted would have more seriously considered it. Honda however is really nice car and the engineering that Honda engineers did with the Type R is outstanding. Great performance and handling in a front wheel drive just boggles the mind. Thanks for the great videos you do Joe!
@@doctorrobert60 i feel exactly the same, i would take the type r but it looks too much like a boy racer car..i would drive it with a mask on ...with covid its perfect but sooner or later the pandemic will end lol
I like how they blacked-out the trim on the Type R. To my view it looks better and cleaner rather than just slap chrome trim on it.
Agreed!
I’m an AWD kinda guy and even though it’s outdated the STi is my personal preference, I love the way it drives. I’ve driven the CTR it’s a beast in the FWD class, great car, I’m just AWD biased. You can’t go wrong with either 🤣🤣
I totally know how you feel! The Type RA just speaks to me.
After going down a list.I got a Stinger GT AWD 2020--and it would eat these cars lunch in a drag race.I know it is not as good on the track--but the stinger would also do similiar lap times just for how much faster it accelerates.I paid 36k for a 2020 AWD Stinger GT--I already have an exhaust and geomet cross drilled rotors. The stinger can go from a standstill to 167 in about 45 seconds--it takes over a minute for these 2, 4 cylinders to hit 155.BTW I consider cars in a segment by PRICE and both these cars were more expensive then the stinger--and I am a former Type R owner.BTW those 0 to 60 times--those were the best of 5 runs and that was the quickest run--the stinger can hit low to mid 4s everytime you punch it.The new autos also shift faster then manuals--and with an modern AWD make them really fast. I also put an exhaust on my car and I am at 25 mPG--have mine on video if you click my name. These are nice cars--it is just that the Stinger is a better--faster car overall and has a longer warranty. The FWD honda is actually also not that great on a track.
@@khronin Thanks for your in depth input!
@@RaitisRides BTW the interior on the Stinger is on Par with Honda--all the buttons are tight and the leather--door panels--etc are all aligned--finished nice and tight.

I’ve wanted an sti since the early 2000s when I was still in high school. I’m looking at finally getting one at 34 years old. A friend of mine got a type r and I have to say I was very impressed but that thing is not visually appealing at all to me. It’s an easy choice for me going with the sti, but just wanted to give some praise to the type r. Fun car.

@@Scythersmile1 that thing is hideous lol looks like the type r
I had to decide between these two cars (not the RA model). While the WRX STI sounds great, is more upgrade friendly and has a better infotainment system (and heated seats lol), the Type R does everything else better in my opinion and is why I bought the Type R.
After getting a new exhaust, I don't regret my decision at all.
Thanks for sharing that great input from your experience!
I know it’s been a year but I hope you don’t mean upgrade friendly in terms of power mods because the sti is absolute garbage for that and blows up with a 50hp gain
@@Wonderlaust that’s because it’s not a civic or mustang or any other common car. You don’t build it the same. You don’t just buy parts, slap them on and think you’re going to gain another 100hp without the proper preparations.

Let us try deep corners, snow and turns. Let see how Honda can handle it. I still lovs my STI for life.

That type r is a beast for sure just like the subie is a beast although myself I prefer the inline 4 Honda more than the subie boxer. Don’t get me wrong I love Subaru as well but something about Honda just makes it have a special place in my heart
I like both of these cars but it's not really a like for like type r part is a front-wheeled drive champion the Subaru the four-wheel drive champ. I think it's just a shame that the Mitsubishi Evo isn't here to join the party anymore.
Also is Scooby cost a lot of money and if it's depreciating already that's not a good sign and no offence but Interiors on Subarus are still stuck in the 80s. I think Honda Edge it for engine development and if they come up with a four wheel drive one day they will blitz most of the competition👍😂
@@SuperValdez7 totally agree with you I love Scooby's but Hondas for me are so much more fun, I have an old type R and when you hit that VTEC it's a special feeling.

Love the Blue on the CTR. It pops and sparkles without looking gaudy. It’s a youthful color, hope Honda comes out with more attractive colors!
I am so glad that you like this one Cody.
I have got both - 2016 STI fully stripped and roll caged running E85 racing car and 2019 Type R FK8. FK8 wins in terms of suitable for a daily driver and stunningly fast in the hills, however it is too easy to drive and ECU does a lot of work for you. I love STI for its pure mechanical feel and it is better (not definitely faster) from driver skill development perspective. Both cars have got overheating issues on track. I would say for a racing application, FK8 should be much more of a bang for the buck in terms of cost versus lap time ratio.
I probably would have gone with the Honda if it wasn't so over-styled. The Type R looks like a plastic anime mech to me. I know a lot of it is functional, but I think they could have made the design a little less busy and still achieved the same aero benefits. End of the day for me, the STi is just looks more classic, sounds more classic, and has more old school mechanical functionality(DCCD, Hydraulic steering) that I love. That said, there's no arguing the the Honda is the more modern and efficient design, so if that's what you're into, that's awesome!
Now this is the video we've been waiting for
I am so glad to hear!
I love the Type R and I am ‘Honda’ fanatic as well but I would choose the Subaru. The main reason is the AWD. Winter can get pretty bad where I am and a FWD wouldn’t cut it for a daily driver. No snow and I’m taking the Honda without a doubt.
I can totally understand that!
I drive a fwd civic. Drove through winter back country side up mountains no problem. Didn't get stuck once. Get some good winter tires
I'm a big subaru fan, and has always owned Impreza WRX/STI over the years. I have never owned a Civic Type R, but a relative has a 2004 supercharged Civic Type R and wow.... thats a beast. I get why the Honda people love V-Tech. But I love the rumble of the sunaru and thats what keeps me part of the scooby gang ! But a great review and thank you for your thoughts on them both 😎
I really appreciate that!
I gotta say, that Boost Blue on the Honda Civic Type R is a beautiful color. In terms of ownership, I would need to buy 18 inch wheel rims and 18 inch all weather tires for the Type R as an everyday car. At the end of the day, I would not feel as comfortable in long term ownership in the Subaru WRX STi. The engine and transmission reliability is not there, the manual shift feel is not my style, and trunk is just not as useful a hatch.
The STI is actually known for its transmission reliability, just the engine is a no no.
Absolutely awesome review!! I am currently deciding between the two!
Thanks man! It is a tough choice!

This has suspension tuned for fast road and track with harder springs, big 4 pot brakes Pagid Rs14 pads and Nitron dampers. Running Avon ZZR tyrpes on light weight Oz race wheels. Just bought a Type R and I am so impressed with its performance and handling for a stock car. The electronic wizardry is amazing. Just fitted a Eventuri Carbon fibre inlet and Blue Stuff pads. Immediately the engine pick up even better. Awaiting engineers to get access to the ECU to upload a Hondadata map and then think this will be my wet track day car or perhaps wet and dry car. My 20yr old Elise is still great fun but I bet the Type R will probably beat it on track.

Here's a question to ponder. Imagine if the Honda Type R came with an engine with 2.4 L displacement? That would be close to 370 BHP OEM. But as it stands I'll take the Subie.
That would be insane!
Just ask Max Verstaphen how good a Honda engine is. Amazing what f1 brings to road cars. Just wish I was younger than 50, I would definitely consider the Honda
Cool man!
Never too old.
Not just for the young guys 52 yr. Old owner R-6610.
Anthony Galeano my dad says the same thing. The age thing isn’t so much “ I don’t want to be seen in this car” it’s more so “ I’m at an age where I really don’t wanna daily a stick”
I have been trying to get a Type R for a while. Its crazy in 2021. Guy told me I would have to put a grand down just to reserve one when they get them in 2022. There are used Type R's around but they actually go up in value. Usually 40k or more.
Just watched this video. I own a 2020 STI and there's a 2021 type r on the lot about 2 miles from my place. I love my car, but now I feel inclined to go and drive the Honda 😅
Loving the type r but wish they would make it in AWD, calm the look down a tad, and do more adult looking seats
They say the next gen will have AWD.
AWD and it will no longer be a Honda Type R … the fact that it’s still top 20 in most circuits against RWD & AWD, really says a lot about Hondas over engineering of the FWD 2.0 300hp Type R. Amazing what they done. The type r handles and feels like an NSX almost down the track. Hard to explain
i think for the price both cars need a refresh inside i know you buy theses cars for perfomance but it looks dated !

I love Honda's but 2 things i dislike about the civic type R digital gauge cluster and electronic handbrake other than that its a very good car

I'll add I would have preferred it in 2 door coupe form and less out there in your face looks more elegant like a prelude with maybe Acura getting an add hybrid version and nsx junior.
So I now have no manual coupe options to upgrade to from my civic si vtec at Honda or coupe in general.

Yeah, those twenty inch tires wouldn’t last on New York roads with all the potholes.
Change the tires. Cheaper than spending another 13 Gs
That’s why we all throw on 18s. Titan 7s + 255/40/18 ps4s and the car rides awesome. It does introduce a little torque steer though.
The STI can definately ran a 13.2 but with it being a manual with some turbo lag you will probably have some trouble launching it. The Civic R will be more consistent in the quarter mile.
Driver dependent. There is no turbo lag if you know turbo boostIng. STIs aren’t meant for everyone and requires a driver that knows how to drive it. Manual all the way.
Have an STI, want the Type-R.
Imagine having both!
The civic type r has more cabin engine noise when you floor it than that sti, Even though the civic type r stock exhaust isn’t that loud and that sti exhaust is louder than the type r, but still the type r stock exhaust sounds louder at higher revs than the sti exhaust
This is so true Fabian!
the CTR cabin noise is fake believe it or not, it's called adaptive sound control

Both cars are nice but I’m biased to like the STI more given that I own a WRX. When it comes to owning manuals, sound is a big concern of mine and the Type R is just too quiet. The STI sounds meaner, has AWD and heated seats, and a real handbrake to boot. I’ve actually been looking at Veloster N’s because they sound so good and have no rev hang.

Race the WRX STI against the TYPE R on the Nurburgring...then I'll decide who's better
I would love to that!
Just compare the numbers bro they did a lap 😉
the type R has a better Nburg lap time
@@davevilla1061 different drivers different outcome. They should have atleast 5x record in 5 days with few different proffesional drivers.or just switch the driver on the type-R to Sti driver after one record on a day, then do do that the next day again till they reach 5 total days.remember, not all the time a pro driver will perform the same as yesterday.
Jack Collin but the gap is so large between them two that drivers wouldnt have mattered! From performance point of view, type r is just insane
I gotta say, I bleed WRB but that Honda is fresh AF!!!! Would love to have one parked next to my STI.
You know what a good review would be? Do both with a winter set up on a snow covered road. Because here in Illinois that’s what matters!!!
Great review Joe, let’s see more of that Ford!!!!👍🏻👍🏻
I totally understand where you are coming from Tom! Thanks for your support and there is more Shelby to come.
Best part about this video which I have watched before is you true honest review. I have a 2020 Limited WRX and must say if the type R was a bit cheaper in MSRP and had AWD might have went the Honda way. Type R is not everyones cup of tea in style but I like it. Going to be interesting to see the refresh versions of both these cars which both seem to have truly leaked out now. The Honda Type R spy shots show it to be more toned down while the WRX a bit more aggressive aka Levorg.
Thanks for taking the time to say that! I appreciate the compliment. You are so very right. It should be interesting.
I would probably buy the STI, but the CTR is the better performer.
Same here!
Love these two for Tues... wait, today’s Monday. Oh well, I’d pick the Subie for the AWD. They’re pretty close though. Nice job Joe! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
You are awesome Larry! Thanks for always tuning in no matter what day it is!
I don't think the Type R is better... but it certainly has better modern features than the STI. STI is my choice solely due to the AWD system and I just can't get over the rear end of the Type R. Way too much. But I love the front end.
I'm a subie guy. I love your channel ! I just wish subaru did something a little different with athstetics for Type RA other than red stripe and wing.
That’s my high school lovin it Raiti
Very cool Austin!
You should do a Veloster N vs STI review!
I like the way that you think!
The STI RA all the way..🤩😍🤤
This is the person that can sell u a broken pencil 😂
LMAO! You are hilarious!
Love ur videos
On paper the Type R is cheaper, then you hit the honda dealers and the type R is roughly the same price as the Type RA. smh
There are always those dealerships but the good news is if you do your research you can find dealers that are not adding ADM.
Raiti's Rides I probably have to look at dealerships outside California then
@@shannos9604 It may be worth it in the end.
Don’t expect msrp in the Seattle area..
@@shannos9604 I looked at a type r and they were not budging on price--39k..I got a 2020 Stinger GT AWD and it is a better--faster car then these two cars--and it was cheaper--cause the stinger was 43k and they gave me rebates of 7k--I also traded in a rare--titled Type R crosstour that knocked the stinger down to 19k out the door.Honda Type R forum and Stinger forum had no major problems--the STI forum had a decent amount of folks dealing with major repairs.I drove a Type R within about 2 weeks of a Stinger and it was evident that the Stinger was a much faster car--it also develops torque early at 1300 RPM.BTW these 2 cars are also right at 40k--I believe the RA is actually closer to 55 to 60k. KIA warranty also sold me--10 year 100k means they know shit is not breaking.
Hands down the Subi
I like the way to you think.
Joe .. I can see the 3M subscribers very near.. U definitely deserve that.. U r very systematic in terms of detailing every spot of the vehicles u describe.. Like a doctor without a white apron.. Keep up the good works.. You have fans from the middle east
If u r going to sell one of ur cars .. Which one u r willing to sell? And? how much u r putting for it
You are to kind and I am so grateful that you are part of the Raiti's Rides family! Right now I have no plans for selling either of my cars. Thank you for the great support!
Oh man I’d be happy with either of these. When the fk8 first came out I remember thinking it was too big and over stylised for a Civic, after seeing them more in person though I absolutely love them.
I am Subaru fan I never loved the look of the new Generation of Civic
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
What something does is more important than what it looks like.
Yeah just like when you see a girl it don't matter what she looks like just whats on the inside...lmao doooh
Both are awesome but I'll take the Honda for realiability.
Subarus are reliable as well.
@@RaitisRides yeah Joe but Subaru did have that class action lawsuit with the 2.5 turbo 🤨
@@Dragon220614 Well all I can talk from is my personal experience. Honda has issues in the past with oil dilution.
Raiti's Rides not with the 2 liter
@@RaitisRides yeah Joe but that was for the 1.5 turbo, not the 2.0 turbo a completely different engine. I'm not trying to start a Honda vs Subaru debate here cause that would be chaos lol just chiming my opinion. Keep up the videos.
Both cars have their own capabilities. I especially love my Sti but i see the Honda type R have a little more power the only thing this cars is missing is the awd feel system. And the other hand the Sti have less power but the Awd System feel is amazing. In short words both cars are totally unique 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Great thoughts Cesar.
They basically have the same amount of power. The Civic is just way lighter because of the FWD.
My sti sounds just 10 times better than type r. I love both but I drive one time in montreal snow storm with my sti and it was life altering. The feeling of god like is just unbeatable. I am in love with my sti.
WRX better looking blue
World Rally Blue is classic!
@@RaitisRides agreed but Subaru needs to offer the cars with new colors in their limited editions. Series.Grey/white were boring. Hyper blue was the only one I liked. Also where is the sunshine orange in the 2021 Crosstrek?
yes
Possibly!
no
@@randombuzz8491 Possibly
Very good test! Thanks from Spain. I enjoy the Way you compare both. Next time Type R Limited Edition...
You are so very welcome! I will track that down for you!
You do your job very well. Thanks for the objective review.
I need Subaru body and style with type R engine 😅
Now that would be interesting!
